coming into warhammer from magic has been a fascinating experience, but one of the more interesting things to me is how all the different but similar games under the warhammer umbrella (40k, aos, kill team, necromunda, fantasy 9th or tow) kinda mirror magic formats, with each having its own appeal and strengths

with magic, the choice to play modern vs commander vs canlander is about the card pools you want available, or the power level, or the style of play, but the differences between entire games systems are a fair bit different. but, they all more or less fit into the same gameplay of rolling many dice, and knowledge from one system will transfer to all others, even when there are massive rule differences. kill team vs aos vs fantasy all have different appeals, which helps keep things diverse and interesting

like i've been playing the fanmade 9th edition fantasy lately, and it's really interesting for how specific the rules and armybuilding goes. it's absolutely the kind of thing where i can spend an hour thinking about minute differences, and there's a lot of fun in that. but also when i want something easier there's other similar games for that

i've heard for a while now that magic is an underlying rules system broken up into many different games, as a point on how different each of the formats is, and in light of this, i can definitely agree

Stupid TTRPG Idea

Take a really old edition of 40k or WFB, or some other tabletop wargame. Since the rules themselves can't be copyrighted, only the presentation of them.

Strip out most of the armybuilding rules and replace them with character generation. Add minimal rules for roleplay.

Completely rejigger the setting, probably starting with original Rogue Trader (as in the '80s one, pre- Realm of Chaos books) instead of "modern" 40k. Make it grimdark but hopeful, in a "light at the end of the tunnel" sense. "We've just had 10,000 years of fucking darkness, but things are actually looking up for a change!"

Keep the off- grid map rules, have cardboard or 3D printable templates (we suggest translucent filament) for various spells/effects.

The Inquisition is in fact evil, because it's attractive to people who want to kidnap and torture while retaining their legitimacy. Just like how being a cop is so attractive to white supremacists.

Power doesn't corrupt. It just draws the already corrupted.

Get rid of "theater of the mind" because LOS and range actually matter, and because you don't get to use cool templates.

from some goofing around with this armybuilder, as far as i can tell the Maximum Lightsaber you can achieve in a single list is Four with either the Empire or CIS;

Republic and Rebels each have Three lightsaber users, but you can only have two at a time in a list for both, unless you ignore force org.

oh and Shadow Collective (neutral / Fringe faction) have Maul as a specialist, who can theoretically be allied into any list that has the 170 points and slot available. Being that there's only two specialists permitted per list, this disallows him from joining CIS, and WOULD disallow him from joining Empire if not for that seventh sister and fifth brother together take only one slot. SO. if you play a game thats 1000pt, you can theoretically fit Maul (Rival Ver.) into the empire list for a total of five lightsaber users

star wars legion is so so close to being a great wargame but its sorely lacking in VARIETY

which is super sad considering its set in Star Wars, probably one of the most expansive media properties out there.

like yeah theyve got your four main factions of Grand Army of the Republic, Confederate of Independent Systems, Galactic Empire, and Rebel Alliance. amd theyve got the Shadow Syndicate, yoinked from the animated tv series / the Solo movie

what about old republic. sith empire? dig a little deeper than that, theres a huge amount of mandalorian culture to explore. how about some trandoshans engaged in The Great Hunt? i wanna hear about the war on mon calamar between the Quarren and the Mon Calamari. they didnt even include hutts, the gangster guys everyone knows. theres an ewok only detachment, enough geonosians to barely assemble an army, and half a detachment of wookiees. thats cool. now lets hear about the massassi. what about the taung? the guys that founded the popular mandalorian culture? those guys are pretty neat they should have a few models

one of the things that makes/made warhammer so popular is that it has SO MANY factions and codexes to choose from, and each of those options has ~20 different official colour schemes to pick from as inspiration for your army. sure theres a lot of boring ultramarines players but outside that no two collections will be the same and thats a huge part of the appeal!

the people making legion just went "yeah heres your stuff from ths movies. and maybe a few tv show tie-ins too. have fun." WHERES THE CREATIVITY

the list i want to run doesnt fit ~exactly~ into Blizzard Force because I want an At-St / sith empire scout walker so im swapping the required support unit for a heavy unit (amd therefore its Just An Empire Army, not a Blizzard Force detachment) so i wont actually get the blizzard force detachment rules but thats fine, I'm just using it as a guideline :>

if ive got enough filament i should have my Sith Empire list printed and ready for battle within a week :)

Oh also on Barraki,from what I understand there were three prototype concepts of them: there were the ambiguous amphibians from the Rahna draft, the Rhihawkwa of the Luma draft and "underwater Makuta soldiers" from the Yokuma draft. We don't know whether they were armybuilders or unique, but based on how the 08 villains of Rahna and Luma draft were army builders, it makes sense for them to be armybuilders for Rahna draft at least. The "traders" were referencing to Rhikawkwa, but thought they weren't warlords, and instead that was something else, which is why i descrbied them a bit wrong. I also had Rhikwakwa and Makuta soldiers mixed up or correlated to my head, so that's why that was a bit mesed up.

Ok can we stop talking about the "gymbo inika were the reason love isn't canon"when there's stuff in the prototype plans that are far more insane and interesting including (but not limited to)

One of the earliest concepts for 06 was set in Mata nui where Toa nuva fought the morally gray Toa Rahna, who served as a more negative reflection of Toa. A major theme for this idea was exploring if toa could be evil.

While 08 always had bat themed villains, initially 08 was supposed to have army builder mooks instead of BoM Makuta. Also originally 08s villains were supposed to be Karda nui natives

That said, Makuta as a species and Brotherhood of Makuta were planned to by the story team as early as 2004, and were already considered to be the villains of 08. Though by this time only the titan sets.

There's at least two different concepts for aquatic villains that vastly differ from the Barraki. One of them were soldiers that were possibly army-builder villains, while the others were traders who weren't necessarily evil(?) Regardless both of them very were starkly different to the Barraki in canon, thoguh the soldier concept is far more align to with what we ended up getting.

The Piraka we know and love(?) seem to be a fusion of the two prototype concepts of 06 villains: A greedy brigand species who terrorize the locals called Hagalakh and the aforementioned Toa Rahna. The Piraka took the aesthetics/lore/culture of the Hagalakh and the "anti-toa team/ group of six individuals who served as evil disorted version of toa" concept from toa Rahna.

In the concept with the Hagalakh as 06's antagonists, their goal was to wake up Tren Krom who was supposed to be the final boss. Tren Krom in this version was supposed to be a dead giant whose corpse hosts a temple and the treasures the villains seek.

In some of the plans the hunt for mask of life started in 07, not 06. 06 instead had a different goal that depended on which version of the story plans wer'e talking about

Some plans had the toa Inika/Mahri be the main team for all three years, while some plans had the team change every year. The plan

Some of the plans indicate the "Matorans" were meant to be different species of beneveloent creatures, as they used different title than Matoran to describe them. These include the Rana and the Ihoian, though the Rana may have been Matoran

Lot of plans had the titan sets be either Rahi, or at least, other Rahi-like creatures and beasts. Many of 06 and 07s concepts had these beasts be protectors for sacred locations or the Mask of Life.

There were plans for character titans. One of the Haglak/TK concepts had the leader of Haglaks, Torak, while one of the prototype Barraki were meant to have their leader be a titan set

06 was designed a shakeup that would revitalized the brand by addressing major flaws the storyteam felt prevented new kids getting hooked. One of the bigger roadblocks was the lack of a main protagonist. This was corrected by introducing a new Matoran protagonist with a connection to Mask of Life who would act as the centerpiece of the Ignition trilogy and eventually become a Toa.

At the end of 06 the Toa of Fire (Jaller??) was supposed to die and be replaced by the aforementioned Matoran protagonist as the toa of fire

Mazeka was the name of a corridor in 06 plans

Takanuva was supposed to use Mask of Life at some point

Toa Mahri were called Toa Awkwa at one point
