[comic review] star trek: discovery: aftermath (2019)

writers: kirsten beyer & mike johnson artists: tony shasteen (aftermath) & angel hernández (2019 annual)

like the previous discovery graphic novel, this one also includes the year's annual issue, titled "captain saru." as the title suggests, we see saru’s first full mission as acting captain, including a bit more detail about starfleet’s decision not to give him command of the discovery on a more permanent basis after season 1. this story also references two of the discovery novels, which i thought was super cool.

the mission discovery embarks on with a skeleton crew ends up having the cinematic scope of the sorts of missions they often find themselves on in the series, the art and dialogue really conveys that action quite well, and saru gets to be a bit of a badass. on the whole, this story kicks some serious ass.

... on a more superficial note, the baddie is an arrogant orion slave trader, and her henchmen are a bunch of hunky shirtless orion boys, soooo uh yeah i also appreciated that. obviously.

in the main story arc of the graphic novel, captain pike drags spock from leave on vulcan to help him with the federation’s overtures of peace towards chancellor l’rell and the klingon empire. there’s some wonderful interactions between pike, number one, and spock, and some great action once some of the klingons try to betray l’rell. getting pike & l’rell out of this situation alive helps give spock the push he needs to resume his duties aboard the enterprise, as seen in the last scene of the season 2 finale.

both of these stories are pretty great. it's also pretty interesting that both of them flesh out similar parts of their respective seasons. though i imagine that owes as much to the structure of season 1 & 2 finales both having a rather disconnected denouement as anything else. either way, they both feel like they fit the show pretty authentically, while also adding something of their own.

Star Trek: The Next Generation: Terra Incognita #1

The Tipton brothers, Scott and Davis, wrote The Primate Directive, a Star Trek/Planet of the Apes Crossover miniseries in 2014/15.  They have done a lot of Star Trek beyond that, including several “Mirror Universe” stories, Dr Who Crossovers, a Gorn special, and more.  Other work includes some Dr Who comics, and writing credits for TMNT, Mighty Crusaders, The Seven Per Cent Solution, Angel, Spike, AstroBoy, and Ragnarok.

Like the Tiptons, Tony Shasteen has done a lot of Star Trek, including ST: Boldly Go, ST: Manifest Destiny, ST: Discovery, ST: New Adventures, and the ST/Green Lantern crossover, just to name a few.    Beyond that, he has done some fascinating work on Cthulhu Tales, Occult Crimes Taskforce, and Talisman: Road of Trials.  He has also worked on Batman, Deathstroke, Conan, JLA, and more.

IDW has done several of ST:TNG miniseries featuring the Mirror Universe.  A recent story arc had members of the mirror universe Enterprise crew attempting to take over the Enterprise of the Federation universe.

At the end of that story arc, there was one subplot left open.  The mirror universe Lt Reginald Barclay is still on board the Federation Enterprise.

Lt Barclay is a fan-favorite character from ST: TNG, and he was so popular that he was a featured guest character on several episodes of ST: Voyager.  One of the things that makes Reg Barclay a fan favorite is his accessibility.  Captains Kirk, Picard, Janeway, etc are all unflappable paragons of perfection.  Barclay, on the other hand, is an everyman.  Finding himself in the perfect future world of the Enterprise, the flagship of the United Federation of Planets’ Star Fleet, he often feels inadequate and/or overwhelmed.  Despite this, he does his duty to the best of his ability, and this makes him perhaps, the bravest member of the crew.

Where Reg Barclay is hesitant and earnest, the Mirror Barclay is ruthlessly and avariciously efficient.  Where Reg Barclay wants to contribute meaningfully and fit into the crew, Mirror Barclay wants to get .

ahead and will take advantage of his peers.

The Mirror Barclay has to figure out how to fit into the UFP Enterprise.  His plan is then to become a “Better Barclay,” and move up the chain of command.  He believes that with his ruthlessness and ambition, he will move up quickly.  He understands that there are differences he will need to learn about in order to fulfill his goals.

The Tiptons are once again showing both their truly superior writing skills and the great depth of their knowledge/understanding of the Star Trek Universe and the many characters in it.  Choosing to focus on a character like Reg Barclay, who is simultaneously both complex and popular, poses many risks, and fortunately, they have risen to the challenge.

Tony Shasteen’s artwork on Trek comics is well known.  He has a realistic style that includes both high technology and human features.  In a story arc like this, he has to show both Barclays in such a way as to allow the reader (but not the other Trek characters) to differentiate between them.

This is a great opportunity to examine a fan-favorite character.  The Barclay-centered episodes of ST:TNG and ST: Voyager were very popular with fans.  Likewise, ST:TNG: Terra Incognita, helmed by this impressively talented and experienced team of storytellers, has success written all over it.

[comic review] star trek: discovery: the light of kahless (2017-18)

just an extended flashback about discovery season 1 klingons, and i super hate what season 1 of discovery did with the klingons, so yeah shockingly i didn’t like this one too much? i also wasn’t a big fan of the art. like, the lines were fine but there often wasn’t enough contrast between the background and the foreground so it was occasionally really hard to see what was going on in a panel without studying it carefully.

oh, it did have a lot of unintentionally horny dialogue though so that was nice. didn’t make me like the story any more or anything, but at least it kept me entertained. come to think of it that was basically how i reacted to the klingons in season 1 of discovery. “i hate this writing but i’m pretty thirsty for them.” so i guess they did a good job of capturing what the show conveyed.
