Meet the Artist: @everydaylouie

Hi! I'm Louie, an illustrator and musician based in LA. I love the fun and weird ways music and art can intersect to tell unique stories. You might know my work from the Ghost Duet series, or perhaps from We Bare Bears. If you can believe it, I've been on Tumblr for upwards of a decade now (it's how I got my first gig in animation!) In my spare time I like to jam with friends and read.

kevin macross n spacecrumble display quiet intimacy in their work that inspires me more than maybe anything else on this list. i rlly admire capturing that sorta muted but real emotion between people more than any technical or aesthetic work because it’s SO hard for me to do, i’d love to learn how to!

sometimes when i feel unmotivated artistically, i will go to my likes on here and try to copy some of the pictures and art others have posted. i am not trying to steal from anyone, i have liked these people’s work and want to try and understand another’s style by attempting it. i will try my best to tag all, but i may miss some. if i do, let me know and i’ll tag appropriately.

Who/what is your biggest inspo for poetry or art?

aagh i dont think i'll ever have one biggest inspo for poetry n art i just have a lot of lads which i like specific things about + those likes are still always ongoing and changing lol (which btw ty for askin bout poetry cause i LOVE it n i never get asked abt poetry hehe)

I have a big ol google doc where i have lines of fav poetry i write down when i come across them (usually when im just scrollin the internets) and atm I've been noticing that a lot of lines i keep enjoying are all by Mary Oliver even tho i've yet to read her collection of poetry!!! so that's on my to-do list C: other poets who's names keep poppin up in that google doc are ocean vuong, richard siken, chen chen and uhh flatsound? they do more music but they've done some spoken word stuff and their songs just feel close enough to the realm of poetry to me u know

Art stuff... lol which medium?? /lh I really like thomas jordan's photography (the COLOURS my DUDE) mmm shelia berger's kinetic sculptures and KICKASS "Bird Show" encaustic paintings (i watched the rlly short like 5 min documentary on her and i was enraptured) Spencer finch has got a lot of cool conceptual art stuff like i think CIE 529 418 (CANDLELIGHT) is rlly cool!! Holly warb and @/vchienart both got some lovely lovely illustrations/paintings with soft beautiful colours... @/emilienunez has some really pretty and elegant yet v cute ceramics!! and @/soonthemoon some really like cute warm n cozy ones... Oof there's so many digital artists i love ;-; and i keep finding new cool lads aghh @catnippackets has such a good grasp on like form n shape if that makes sense?? like drawin people in these rlly fluid poses in like silky lineart aaa i found @milkdudz 's art recently and i LOVE their art style and their cats are just. perfect balance of spiky and soft n very very Cat which is so good @everydaylouie u gotta know louie right ?? how can someone make such lovely 2d and 3d art and music and also know how to code n make lil games. that is too much power for one soul to possess nifty-senpai's art n animations and designs ofc!! are incredible!! and i REALLY love their concepts for what the wc clan territories look like (this moonpool are you kidding me???? gorgeous) @thunderc1an's lineless art style my beloved...... yall clammorin about my lineless art style u GOTTA check out theirs so good (also the everchanging never the same designs for wc characters is so good so freeing so interesting to look at!!) SmallButera's animations omg... literally speechless (also have u seen their series baman piderman?? its so precious it might be on indefinite hiatus im not too sure but its still my favourite thing) chadisms, Riley Ellis, Asha Phaedra and Cherrydusk also got some BANGIN animation skills and o my god this post got so long n theres still so many ppl ive gots to stop and do homework LOL

I feel like Tumblr is totally sleeping on Louie Zong as an artist. Like sure he did Ghost Duet. And everyone loves Ghost Duet. But he has also produced such masterpieces as

6) Currently I'm just really inspired by other independent artists! @psshaw , @grosskelly , @artsydudejude , @abby-howard , @possessedpasm , @everydaylouie , @dimetrodone , @quesadillawizard , @coyoteprince , @pixel-lightart , @turboemmy , and @zooophagous come to mind, as well as others. They've all got such rich, unique styles and subject matter that I could just get lost in and I encourage checking out their work, there's a lot to learn and appreciate.

9) Currently I'm trying to improve on my textures! I'd like to add some depth to my digital work, emulating traditional textures like inks, newsprints, and paints would be nice

14) Oh my art has changed wildly. Let me drag some older examples up...

These are just some examples of my stuff through the years- 2011-ish, 2012, 2014, 2016, 2020, and 2022 are the rough timestamps on here but I jumped around a lot stylistically, pulling from things I enjoyed, and I had a WEIRD period where my art morphed from this very simple style to something more animeesque to stylized realism (there was a SUPER ugly phase) etc until I finally got comfortable and frankly while I always have room for improvement I have had a lot of fun lately just experimenting with a lot of different styles, playing fast and loose with shapes and rendering, even if I'm not that consistent with what I put out currently. Never know what to expect what I feel like putting down! Simpler shape, stronger colors, and inkpens and stuff are my bread and putter currently. I'm trying to push my character designs and enjoy myself. Notably I also took FOREVER to get comfy with doing digital art really, until I learned a lot of tips and tricks and figured out what worked for me I hated rendering digitally most of the time, and I still do most of my sketches traditionally, but I'm getting more and more comfortable with my digital lineart and rendering mostly thanks to things like Artfight where I get to experiment a lot in a short amount of time!

This has also reminded me that I want to revisit more of those stylized full-page pieces I did in Highschool like the bird dragon thing above

Most of my Spotify Wrapped made sense (still listening to Asphalt Meadows on repeat) but I was a bit surprised that my top Spotify artist this year was @everydaylouie!

Must have been because of my two playlists I had on repeat all year while working: the instrumental “Louie We’re Grading Now” playlist which worked well when focusing on grading and “Louie We’re Jamming Now” with the rest of the songs with awesome random styles and hilarious lyrics!

So I have an app called stats.fm, which takes your specific Spotify data and let's you view it in more specific and detailed ways. It has a system called Records, that show if you are the #1, #2, or #3 listener to a specific artist. And so. Now I know:

As a fellow artist, im struggling in the world of learning digital art... i really only have procreate on my phone. What kind of platform would you recommend, and do you have any advice? Sorry if you dont like these asks.... i just really admire you and your art style and i was curious!

procreate is one of the better options when drawing on mobile ive heard!! ive seen the likes of pascalcampion and i think everydaylouie use it?? their works are the kind to take inspo from. 

ergojosh on youtube can maybe help with getting around to using procreate, and regarding art or digital art in general artandsterf on tumblr is the ultimate archive

8. What is your favorite piece that you have done?

Considering everything I’ve ever made, the Miniature Guardian Dragon plush is probably my favorite! I’ve always enjoyed plush-making and love trying new things, especially when I find an opportunity to challenge myself. So I made this adorable gal back in 2018 using my own pattern and everything! I still need to fix a couple pieces of the pattern, but I like how she turned out and I’m proud of my work.

I’m not sure whether this is referring to people whose art influenced my own or other artists that inspire me, but I’m gonna go with the latter!
