Happy Lunar New Year, fellow goblins!

Today (10th February) officially marks the first day in accordance with the lunar calendar. This year belongs to the Wood Dragon. 🪵🌳🐉 💖

Those born under the only mythical animal zodiac sign are said to be charismatic, intelligent, confident, and ambitious. They are natural born leaders who are innately lucky and gifted, but may become arrogant due to their skills. This can lead to setbacks and failures if they are not careful.

Wood Dragons in particular are characterised for being full of energy, passion and dedication. They have dreams of changing the world and are good at coming up with innovative ideas and implementing them.

Wishing all of us the very best year to come, and may the Wood Dragon bring us lots of happiness and positive change in these turbulent times. 💖

2024 / 4 / 19 A few snapshots of dragon sketches in ballpoint and fineliner pens. I often drag my feet on designing my actual dragon characters and opt for doing headshots of random dragons instead. But this keeps me actively drawing, at the very least. I do love the nose horns on the big fella though, so I'm gonna be exploring that design element further in a character of mine.

Chinese influences on European dragons in the early Middle Ages

Yesterday, I read a chapter about the Parisian saint Marcellus from the book  “Time, Work & Culture in the Middle Ages” by French historian Jacques Le Goff. In it, he alludes to the hypothesis, that dragon depictions from the Merovingian era have been influenced by Chinese motives that have come to Europe through cultures from the Central Asian steppe.

That certainly makes sense to me, since the Huns have had a presence in Europe up until the 5th century, but I’ve never heard of this hypothesis before. Le Goffs sources are all in French (for example “La Civilisation mérovingienne d'aprés les sépultures, les textes et le laboratoire” by Edmond Salin), which I can’t read, and a quick search in Google Scholar didn’t bring up anything interesting.

Does anybody know if this hypothesis is still considered? The book is from the late seventies, so maybe it’s something that never caught on or has been discredited since then, but I haven’t found anything on that, either.

Drew this for new years, as 2024 is set to be the Year of the Dragon, come February. And I've never drawn all of them together before like this, sooo.... yep!!!

I hope to make this part of Kenopsia a comic as well!! Maybe to parallel Stars Below to prevent burnout...? who knows!

fish dragon. i love fish (fishkeeper here. im not just saying that because i am okay about fish... i am saying that because i spent maybe a few couple hundred up to possibly a thousand dollars over almost a decade because of my funky little fish friends that live in my house) (someone please donate money for me to afford more aquatic plants PLEASE. im restarting an aquascape and i have no more money for plant) (or money for more fish friends. tetra - the fish NOT the brand - lovers where u at)

derailed my own post uhhhh i loved dragons as a kid and all i could ever draw were dragons. it ruined my ability to art because i never drew people and i didnt draw real animals either. still love them! maybe ill draw more.
