Like, yes. At its core, Star Wars is and has always been a story about fighting fascism, which in 1977 was fighting Obvious Nazi Stand-ins, because apparently back then we could all agree they were in fact bad. The Empire Strikes Back is generally figured as the best OT movie because it takes a darker and more emotionally wrenching tone to the first movie's goofy fairytale/fantasy elements. Return of the Jedi combined that with still some goofy elements (i.e. Ewoks), a genuinely incredible arc with Luke/Vader, and a happy ending. Then all the Extended Universe books, of varying quality and interest, which I read like crazy as a teenager. I loved those things. Star Wars is absolutely one of the Formative Medias for me for many reasons.
Then, well. The prequels. Which WANTED to be Shakespearean pathos, but didn't have the talent to pull it off, even if there were isolated moments of competence and emotion. The sequel trilogy, about which the less said the better, but I will never forgive it and I hope it dies in a fire. (Okay, I did have to say something about it.) The endless Disney Plus fanservice shows that stacked up like kudzu and were uh, also bad. With the exception of Kenobi, My Beloved, which I loved the shit out of for pretty much the same reasons I loved the Revenge of the Sith novelization, they're just... eh.
Then we had Rogue One, obviously acknowledged as the best of the Disney Star Wars movies, not least because it actually had something to say and wasn't drowned in about ten levels of algorithmized corporate nostalgia fanservice that by and large, composes much of the new Corporate Star Wars. The thing is, yes, the OG Star Wars was about fighting Space Nazis, but there has been so much absolute dreck since then, it kinda felt like the Star Wars universe had been a) mined to death and b) was devoid of the ability to say anything relevant or critical or authentic. It was all just an endless self-referential series of cash cow nostalgiabait supposed to crank out money for the Almighty Disney, and thus stripped of its ability to be art, especially meaningfully antifascist art.
Now, I'm only 8 episodes through s1 of Andor, but I can already tell that whoever made and wrote this show Understood The Fucking Assignment, and everyone in my notes is like "yeah somehow they actually Do Not Fuck Around even less in s2, if that's possible." I did watch a bit of the early episodes a while ago and could tell they were interesting, but didn't get hooked at the time and moved onto something else. But I came back to them now, in the year of our fascist orange fuhrer 2025, and I could tell at once that they actually had something to say re: this whole nightmare situation, and it was both important and necessary.
So yes, here I am, genuinely but pleasantly stunned that A Disney Star Wars Show, which overall has generally involved vapid corporate fanservice that somehow also manages to ruin everything good about the original (LOOKING AT YOU AGAIN, SEQUEL TRILOGY!) is actually... Good. And not just good, but something that I would go so far as to call essential viewing for our /waves hand/ everything on fire. A piece about antifascism that is not afraid to go for the throat and explore it in a way that even A New Hope, with its goofy space fantasy Hero's Journey spaghetti-western-samurai general shtick didn't really do? Like, I wanna think about it. I wanna dig my teeth into it. I have said "oh shit" out loud at multiple moments wherein it yet again became inescapably clear how much they were not, nor evidently had they ever been, Not Fucking Around.
I did see that Rogue One was at the #1 spot on Disney+, so evidently everyone finished Andor and had to rush to rewatch it. And frankly, yet another series tailored to a single character who only appears in one New Disney film and then dies in that one would seem to be the last thing anyone needs in this oversaturated media-remake landscape, but somehow it has, as noted, managed to be both art and art that is brave, good, and necessary. I still don't understand it, but yknow. It’s nice to know it's still out there.
No but really though, I don't understand how one of the most nuanced and gripping fictional portrayals of fighting fascism to appear in recent years is. A Disney Star Wars show.
#star wars#andor#sw meta#i can't believe i am writing sw meta in the year of our lord 2025#aside from kenobi and rogue one#i have not cared about and/or actively hated most Disney Star Wars content#but i guess i will in fact have to add andor to the “damn. okay. respect” list#weird

Absolutely hating the "have a child to remember him by/he never got to meet his kid" trope aside, I think the problem there is trying to make us more sad/feel the tragedy of Cassian dying in Rogue One, when as you've sad, it was already tragic. All of the Rogue One crew dies never knowing if anyone actually receives the plans, let alone manages to break away from the fight to get the plans back to the Alliance. Then actually manage to destroy it. They sacrificed everything for a slim hope. I thought that's where Andor, esp S2 would go with the theme, really following up on Luthen's "I burn my deceny (life) for a future I won't get to see". Especially with deaths like the heist crew, especially Nemik, or all the prisoners who fought back and escaped on a slim hope they'd make it to shore. With Andor going to the main rebellion in s2, I would have liked to see more of the every day rebels and all the things Cassian references having to do that he wasn't proud of, all to pass the torch.
(and this isn't as big a thing, but with how much Cassian hammered in he's had to do things he didn't like/were morally gray just to help the rebellion survive in Rogue One, I expected...more from s2 Andor, of the hard choices he had to make. Besides the young soldier he kills off screen for seeing too much and leaving the Ghormans, people he admitted were doomed to fail, he doesn't really do much that either wasn't necessary for self defense or attacking hostile imperial troops. I guess that's another big downside in jumping the years so much.)
Yeah, the baby feels like it just isn't necessary to get across ANY of the things it's meant to get across. We didn't need the baby for the story to feel like it had hope and people to remember it after Cassian dies. We didn't need the baby to make the story any more tragic, either, it's already plenty tragic on its own. And we didn't need the baby to know that Bix was happy or healing or had moved on, especially since at no point had we ever heard Bix talk about wanting a family or anything like that (the one thing she states that she wants more than anything else is to WIN). So instead of feeling like this really beautifully emotional moment, it just ends up feeling both redundant and blatantly manipulative, as if that baby on its own is meant to bring up those emotions regardless of whether it was adequately set up for this character (or Cassian's) or not.
You could've maybe emphasized the idea of someone who has to survive to remember them with someone like Kleya, who is already a survivor when she didn't want to be, or Mon Mothma who is the single character on this entire show that we know is guaranteed to see the Empire fall and so the burden of remembering EVERYONE HERE might actually end up on her shoulders. That this is her burden. Cassian isn't the only messenger here, she is too.
And yes, I think that there were some missed steps in Cassian's development this season. Unlike some fans, I don't feel like the Cassian we see in Andor is so wildly different from the Cassian in Rogue One that they may as well be two different characters. I think there's a LOT of obvious similarities between the characters, and the fact that Cassian had some different motivations in season 1 wasn't an issue because that is a very necessary thing to do in order to allow the character to GROW, especially when said character already has a pre-established end characterization that the story has to get to (you can see this happen in the Kenobi show as well where he's acting wildly out of character at the beginning in order to allow him space to grow into the wiser character we know from A New Hope; it's also not dissimilar to intentionally making Anakin in TPM be a sweet young boy and not a little antichrist devil child).
But once you've established where the character has started, you then have to make sure you get them BACK to the character everyone is expecting them to become. In Cassian's case, we need to emphasize his commitment to the rebellion and just how much he's been willing to do for this cause, but also his growing ability to see some of the cracks in the organization (or that he's always known the rebellion is flawed but it just doesn't matter because the cause is more important than those flaws).
And not only do we not really get to see all of the terrible things he is willing to do for the rebellion (he is said to have killed a young soldier but he justifies it with protecting BIX, not the cause; then he abandons the mission on Ghorman because he doesn't want to be a part of helping oppress them for the cause; then he goes to assassinate Dedra and doesn't actually manage to complete that task), but he's constantly refusing orders both from Luthen and the other rebel leaders later, which makes his decisions regarding Galen and Jyn have less weight. The whole thing with him choosing to disregard orders about killing Galen because he cares about Jyn and doesn't want to kill her father is that this is UNUSUAL for him, this is a major choice he is making because he CARES about what the consequences of killing someone might be. In this moment, he is choosing Jyn over the cause, and that's supposed to be really big for Cassian. The same is true with the gathering of the volunteers for the Scarif mission because he knows the rebellion isn't going to believe her, but he DOES, he trusts her, and he's willing to let her take the lead this time. This isn't development for his character if you establish that Cassian barely follows orders anyway.
So, yeah, we missed out on Cassian's building commitment to the cause and to the rebellion, on how much he's willing to sacrifice and give up in order to do what's necessary to take out the Empire, regardless of whether he likes the order or not.
And the baby thing fits into this, too! Because this would've been a PERFECT place to really set up how committed Cassian is to this rebellion. Instead of Cassian trying to convince Bix into leaving with him and then Bix "choosing the rebellion for both of them" and just leaving him behind to go have her baby by herself because Cassian has a destiny or whatever, switch those roles. Have Bix realize she's pregnant and that's what finally convinces her that she can stay anymore and she tries to convince Cassian to leave because she can see how much he hates the things he's being asked to do and how he keeps giving up more and more pieces of himself each time it happens and she tries to tell him that she's pregnant in order to convince him and you can SEE just how much it hurts him to hear that and know that he still has to say no.
Because this is the choice he's making, this is a choice he has arguably already made but it's a choice he has to keep making every day of his life now. And the baby makes it harder, but he still chooses the rebellion because he'll ALWAYS choose the rebellion, that's who he is now, it's who he's chosen to be. The person who would have left with Bix probably died on Narkina 5. The person he is now can't go with her. Either the Empire dies or he does now.
So when you see Bix and the baby at the end, it's not this "oh man it's so tragic because Cassian never even knew and now that baby is his legacy or his hope for the future personified despite him never even knowing it existed." It's "This is so tragic because THIS WAS HIS CHOICE TO MAKE, and he dies for the cause knowing that Bix and his child are out there somewhere and he has to hope that this is enough, that giving his life to get the plans off of Scarif will be enough to help bring about the end of the Empire and make them safe." It's not impossible to fit the pregnancy into a better character arc for both Cassian AND Bix, they just... didn't do that.

i just wanted to let you know that i absolutely love your writing. i found your account a couple years ago when i was super into daredevil and read every single daredevil fic you’d written because i am so obsessed with your characterisations of literally everyone. your writing style is so amazing to me, makes me feel like i’m chewing on glass. at this point i’ve read nearly all of your fics and reread a lot of them too and every time i check on your account and see you’ve switched to a new fandom i get so excited bc it’s almost always a fandom i’m into as well. your writing is just really beautiful and special to me so i wanted to let you know that :)
Our tin hats are synched!!!!
This is a gift as a reader, but it is also a gift to an author. Thank you so much for coming with me as I wander. I’m really amazed by how many of you all trust me when I get invested in a new kind of media, like, I think we all know that my characterization of said media is always going to be a little screwy, but I am so happy that we are enjoying the experience together.
I’m searching for crunchy new things right now, tbh.
I’m not done with Star Wars, but I still need a break from it and to finally make myself watch Rogue One. I think I’m just sort of put off by the circular arguments going around in those circles right now.
I really loved Kenobi. I really liked how we got a representation of him that was compelling and fuckin DUSTY. God, I love the amount of dust in Star Wars. But the other shows just aren’t really drawing me in; their vibe feels very…high stakes and not high stakes in the dusty depressed man in the desert kind of way.
I still can’t quite get myself to write Marvel (that anon who asked if I would ever write Team Red again is a worm in my ear, I swear to god. I WILL TRY. I just need to figure out how). I am trying. I saw a trailer for the new Fantastic Four movie and nearly died. Like. I’m sorry, they choose DIN??? DIN-DIN, Pedro-Din? Din Djarin? To be REED???? ‘
Of all people. Of all people.
You know what I would accept it if they literally just replaced Reed with Din, helmet and all, and said Reed got changed in space.
I could work with that. We could have Johnny trying to have an emotional conversation with a space warrior wearing a helmet and jetpack.
But instead we have.
Anyways.
Marvel continues to amaze me.
The Merlin folks are wonderful, too, though I feel like I’m looking for a characterization of those lads that I can’t quite find.
I don’t know if my particular type of humor is suited for this fandom. I keep wanting to imagine a Marvel/Merlin crossover wherein Sam Wilson meets Merlin in a pub and thinks all is fine and lovely until all hell breaks loose in Cardiff, and he thinks he has to Captain America his way through it, only to be shoved aside by the Welsh public who are just like ‘fuck off, we already have one of you.’
I just think it would be cute if Sam Wilson was the biggest King Arthur nerd out there and he meets him and 1) he’s short because he’s a 6th century king with the immunity of a modern 4year old and 2) he speaks terrible English with the craziest accent anyone has ever heard because his first language is Brythonic, his second language is Latin, and his third/fourth languages are Old Norse/English depending on who he was warring with that month and 3) he and Merlin are so codependent they have to text each other to see what color the other one’s drink is so that they can get one of their own to match even though they are across the whole city.
OFMD is a cesspit. I’m sorry, but there’s next to no engagement there and also people are racefaking in the fandom?? Fuckin’ wild, I can only observe them from a comfortable corner. I would love to write more about Izzy being a bug-eyed chihuahua but I’ve sort of lost motivation to carry on in that sandbox.
I will say that @petrichordiam has gotten me reading the Apothecary Diaries as of yesterday and is stuffing letters in my mailbox about little miss poison, so we can see what will come of that.
I’m taking recommendations, though.
Happy to hear what other folks are into right now.
Is it good??? Is it crunchy?? Do you have fandom drama for me? What are the vibes like? Give me a sense of what’s going on over there.

Introduction to Iego - Overview
Canon / Legends
In the mind of the average citizen of the galaxy, the planet Iego--the legendary home of angels--is merely a spacefarer's myth told to young children as a bedtime story.
However, the planet is indeed real, albeit an incredibly difficult place to reach. It is nestled deep within the Extrictarium Nebula, a remote region of the galaxy that can only successfully be navigated by a Force-sensitive. Few people are able to make it to Iego, and even fewer are able to leave, giving way to the general consensus that it is a purely fictional location.
True to the legend, Iego is orbited by a thousand moons. Its largest, Millius Prime, is the home of the Diathim, the mysterious and beautiful species commonly referred to as "angels." They are the ones who illuminate the moons, as the planet strangely doesn't orbit a star--it gains all its light and warmth from a combination of stellar gasses and the glowing aura of all the Diathim. As a result, all of Iego exists within a state of perpetual twilight.
Like the rest of the nebula, Iego itself is incredibly rich in the Force, which in part miraculously sustains life upon the planet and its moons. As a result, however, the native flora and fauna are all... rather strange. To compensate for the lack of true sunlight, many plants are carnivorous and are known to consume the occasional unfortunate sentient being. However, they also often have invaluable medicinal properties--evidence of the dark and the light existing in tandem. The animals, having adapted to compete with and live alongside these plants, are equally as unique: many sport extra eyes and limbs, making them incredibly beautiful or incredibly frightening.
Aside from the native Maelibi--commonly referred to as "demons," they are a secretive race that reside in subterranean tunnels and caverns--Iego has a small population of a few thousand sentients, the descendants of offworlders who shipwrecked on the planet long ago. In ancient times, they had organized into multiple tribes, each one claiming a different part of Iego as their territory. While they have since fallen into obscurity, many Iegoans will attempt to trace their ancestry to individual tribes and claim to identify as them.
The city of Cliffhold is home to the majority of the planet's (non-native) sentients, but the population is also dispersed among various small villages across the planet. Iego has no true capital, let alone any organized planetary government, but the village of Meru--the oldest settlement on the planet--is regarded as the historic and cultural heart of the planet. Practitioners of the local religion will often make pilgrimages to its ornate temples built into the sides of thousand-meter tall cliffs. It is a perilous journey, but, as with every aspect of life on Iego, people endure.

It's a relatively small thing, but I think I'd feel much more confident about the Ahsoka show if it looked different.
I understand why Rogue One's look has become the default look in live-action SW, at least the shows (to the point that The Acolyte having a different aesthetic is a moderate talking point). It's a great-looking film which is probably the Disney one that people agree on most as good (I have reservations but sure, I like it a lot). And yeah, it makes a decent amount of sense to have Mando adopt that look, while with Andor, it fits like a glove.
But leaving aside the fact that a large part of R1's visual appeal is that Edwards and Greig Fraser are both great at shooting scale (with the shows inherently operating on a considerably smaller scale), the thing is that R1 looks pretty different to prior Star Wars films. There's a reason for that. Jyn and Cassian are much lower-key characters than our usual heroes in the setting (and to be clear, this isn't a judgement of whether anyone's a good or bad character) and the whole idea of their struggle is that it's about the Rebel boots on the ground, the heroes behind the heroes.
Is Ahsoka really that? In a way, yes, but it's also set to be a show about larger-than-life characters, one a Jedi and the other a Mandalorian renegade who paints anything within reach, including her own armour, and of course the third-biggest war criminal droid of the era (Chopper might have the biggest body count but he bows to BT-1 and Triple-0 when it comes to sheer sociopathy). They have adventures with space whales, discover the World Between Worlds and encounter oddball wizard beings who speak with the voice of Tom Baker and laugh in the face of Thrawn. There's a reason they benefited from the exaggerated designs and colourful, kinetic presentation of an animated show (and comics, especially the excellent Kanan two-parter).
And an explicitly toned-down realist style kind of pushes against that vibe. The MCU and the current slew of Disney remakes show this off a whole lot - they generally feature larger-than-life characters but skew hard towards realism, as opposed to creating a heightened reality (see Pacific Rim or Mad Max: Fury Road) where those big personalities would feel more at home. Heck, other Star Wars films do that - there's a reason The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi went for bright, vibrant colours (and why Steve Yedlin brought that soulful expressiveness to TLJ in particular). Without it you tend to end up with an odd disjunct where things feel... a bit dull.
In a smaller way, I think we've already seen that with Kenobi, aside from the general trouble that show seems to have had in the area of cinematography. That show often ended up just rather bland - Tatooine is largely pale grey, while the Fortress Inquisitorius and Vader's castle come off more dingy than true halls of darkness.
To be clear, I'm really hoping that Ahsoka Tano gets a good show, and that I'm proven wrong on the visual front. But I worry that we're looking at another SW show which (leaving the whole Volume thing and its constraints aside) opts for an ill-fitting default look, instead of embracing how diverse Star Wars stories can be.

There’s a lot of good points here. At first I was enjoying most parts of this show and was willing to see where it was going to lead (aside from being upset about Carrie Ann Moss being a carrot on a stick for marketing 😆😭). And while I LOVED the action sequences in episode 5, I’m starting to see the rest of the elements of the show fall apart a bit.
1. I’m seeing a lot of people either be disappointed about the number of deaths that occurred in this episode OR being shocked at the number and brutality of them. For myself, along with many other Bad Batch fans, an unexpected character death hasn’t been overly shocking since Tech’s death in TBB season 2. The shock and horror and despair of that storyline was very much a shift for me and many other people, and has since left me a bit numb to similar displays of “shock value” deaths, even though his arguably had more meaning than the ones that occur in The Acolyte. Using death as a plot point, as some of my friends have pointed out, gets boring.
Interestingly, I know that the actors feel differently. Both Jecki and Yord’s actors were told their fates ahead of time and are excited that they got to portray characters who show some grit and stakes in the drama. I’m happy that they are happy with their roles and that they threw themselves into still giving a great performance knowing it would be short. (I’m actually less happy about the amount of focus and marketing that went into Indara and Kelnacca because I think pulling an immensely charismatic and well known actress, and creating an entirely new and intriguing Wookie character, only to have them do next to nothing and serve only as plot fodder, is very disappointing to me, even though I understand their role in the story).
2. For awhile I have been starting to feel like Star Wars shows are starting “too far ahead” in their storylines, so to speak. I saw it with Ahsoka somewhat, and I think it’s causing issues here too. Much of Star Wars has been written backwards, often filling in gaps in timelines that we already know a lot about (TCW, TBB, Rebels, many of the games and novels, Andor, Rogue One, Kenobi, etc), or introducing a past or future era that is still heavily tied to the original storyline via characters and tropes (the PT and ST, Mando, Ahsoka, TBoBF, Resistance, etc). We either are familiar with how the galaxy “works” at a given point in time and can then focus on getting to know and appreciate the characters, or we already know many of the characters and can focus on understanding what is going on in the galaxy in this new story.
The Acolyte isn’t accomplishing either. It is both an entirely new era AND an entirely new cast of characters, both of which we are supposed to come to care about in only 8 episodes. That’s not an impossible ask. But, since they chose to set this show only 100 years prior to TPM (making canon more important), and not tie it more firmly to the existing High Republic storylines, it is unmoored from the precedents set in both THR and in TPM, yet close enough to them that we can’t just start from scratch and suspend disbelief on certain things. We are told the Jedi are concerned about their political image, and seem to be a mix of the more open and compassionate Jedi of THR while turning into the more stoic and uptight Jedi of the prequels, but we don’t know *why*. We have no idea what the state of the Republic is right now other than offhand comments about the Jedi religion and how they interact with other force users. We’re barely shown how the Jedi normally act in day to day life in the temple, other than Sol teaching younglings (which tells us more about him than about the Jedi as a whole), and other than Osha, have little insight into each character’s motivations and thoughts about life outside of this mission they’re dragged on. We know in 100 years the council cannot be aware of the Sith having risen again—which boxes us in to either a cover up or everyone involved in this story dying or leaving.
What I’m getting at, is in a similar vein to what is said above—we need more time with these characters. We need more context. We need more world building. Give me a whole season with Jecki and Yord, and then kill them off midway through a season 2, at the height of me caring about who they are as individuals and who they are to Osha—then I’d be devastated.
This show has been tightly focused on Osha and Mae’s experiences and what happened on Brendok. But it is trying to do that while dropping us into the middle of a galaxy and a group of people that we have no prior experience with, sort of setting up an ensemble cast that was never meant to actually stay coherent, while expecting us to rely on our knowledge of other time periods in this universe to fill in the gaps, even if they’re not entirely applicable. At first it was fun, and the dialogue was quippy and the force bond was intriguing and the witches culture felt unique and worth exploring. But now I’m wanting the cracks to be filled in less sloppily.
3. I did LOVE Jecki and Qimir’s action sequences, both of them were absolutely incredible, as well as the inclusion of cortosis. The cinematography and choreography were beautiful and fresh and very admirable. A few lines of dialogue especially from Qimir were very poignant, and his interactions with Sol and their fight sequences were excellent and heartbreaking and make me want to know just exactly what darkness Sol is hiding. But the rest of the dialogue and plot choices felt on the cheesy or poorly used side, including almost everything between Osha and Mae, who are supposed to be the characters we’re the most invested in. As you said in comments @gffa, a lot of this feels cool but not particularly necessary, and it doesn’t feel like it’s drawing a straight line between THR and TPM the way that other “in-between eras” projects have.
I want to care about these characters. I do. But I don’t think this show is going to add to my experience of the Star Wars universe as much as most of the other shows have, sadly.
I genuinely didn't think The Acolyte would kill Jecki or Yord, not at just barely past the halfway point, and I had to stop and think about why I felt so disappointed by it. It's not really about the deaths of characters I enjoyed--though, I definitely said, "Welp. There goes about 60% of the reason I cared about this show at all." in the most exhausted voice you can imagine--because I can respect a show's decision to kill off a character, especially in a High Republic show, but I still had to wonder about what the point of them even was. What was the point of including Jecki and Yord in the show? I kept thinking about the comments their actors made about their characterization and it all felt so misaligned from what's actually on the screen, there's cute banter and fun moments of care and some badass fights, but neither character really went through anything, there was no character growth because they didn't have time for it. There was just no character arc there at all. So were they only there to be cute and die for the show to tell us that Darf Teefs was Real Bad News? Maybe if I'd had more time with them, more than just four and a half episodes, it might feel like there was a point to them being in the story, beyond just there to die, but right now it really feels like that's all they were there for. And if the show doesn't really care about giving them any kind of real story, it's a lot harder for me to be invested in any of this, either. Maybe I'll come around on it, but my initial reaction is very much feeling like I just got a whole lot of my emotional investment in the show handed right back to me.

After the horrors of Umbara, Rex needs comfort. Usually, he would go to Cody when things get too harsh even for him, but his brother is still mourning the men he lost in the battle; most of them killed by Rex and the 501st. Even if he was deceived by Krell, the captain can’t face Cody, not after what he’s done.
He considers asking Bly or Wolffe for help, but they have both been sent out on missions, so that’s out of the picture, which leaves him with only one option. So once the 501st is back on Coruscant, Rex seeks out Fox.
He can tell the commander of the Guard is surprised to see him, even from behind his helmet. The war has put a strain between the vode on the front lines and those stationed on Coruscant, after all. And as much as he regrets it, Rex didn’t have much time to visit Fox often in between missions.
“Ori’vod…” He starts, but his voice breaks before he can add anything else.
Rex hates how he sounds like a frightened shiny just straight out of Kamino, how this proves just how bad Umbara affected him. However, the moment he hears him, Fox’s behavior changes immediately. He puts down his datapad, his whole attention now centered on Rex. His batchmate leads him to his private quarters so the whole Guard won’t be listening in on them. Once there, Fox removes his helmet and asks him in the softest of tones:
“What’s wrong, vod’ika?”
And Rex starts telling him. He speaks of what he’s been forced to do by Krell and how he hates himself for it, of all the soldiers he lost, of how powerless he felt under the orders of the rogue Jedi. He starts crying and shaking, but he can allow it, since Fox is the only one here to witness it.
His ori’vod is quick to pull him into a hug. He strokes his back in reassuring motions and lets Rex cling to him. In front of his troops, the captain always has to be strong, but here, with his batchmate, Rex knows he’s allowed to break, because Fox will be here to pick up the broken pieces.
“It’s okay, Rex’ika, just let it all out. I’ve got you.” Fox whispers.
And it’s what Rex does. He doesn’t hold back his tears, doesn’t hold back anything. He confesses how he feels like he’s failed Dogma, how it hurt to have Hardcase sacrifice himself so the 501st could survive, how some part of him broke when Waxer died in his arms. Fox doesn’t say much, but he holds him tight, and it’s what the captain needs at the moment.
It’s only once Rex has calmed down and his tears have started to dry out that his ori’vod starts talking. He offers to integrate Dogma into the Guard so he won’t have to be decommissioned, and Rex can’t thank his ori’vod enough for taking that weight off his shoulders. However, he is not ready for what comes next.
His eyes grow wide in confusion when Fox starts giving him advice on how he should act if he ever gets an abusive superior again. On how to minimize losses even when being given unfair orders. On how to forge documentation to protect his troops. On how to cope when being forced to kill other vode. All the examples Fox gives him are way too precise to be only theoretical.
Rex doesn’t want to acknowledge the truth that’s slowly being laid out in front of him, but only a fool would ignore the dark circles under Fox’s eyes, the hair greying at his temples or the hollowness of his stare. He quickly puts his own problems aside, suddenly certain that his ori’vod needs more help than him.
It doesn’t take much digging to discover some of the horrible treatments the Coruscant Guards are subjected to. Even worse, Fox talks of it as if it’s nothing but ordinary. It turns Rex’s stomach. Krell was supposed to be an exception, just a lone traitor, so to discover that his Coruscant brothers are all exposed to the same kind of cruelty on a daily basis… It breaks his heart.
He’ll have to tell Cody, Bly and Wolffe. General Skywalker and General Kenobi, too. They’ll help, he’s sure of it. Despite everything that happened, Rex stays persuaded that their friendship towards him and his vode isn’t faked. The more Fox talks, the more his faith in the Republic wavers, but not the one he puts in his Jedi.
There were many men Rex couldn’t protect on Umbara, but he can still save Fox and his brothers. And he will.

I would like to take a moment to talk about Andor.
First, let me preface this by saying that while I’m a fan of Star Wars I’m definitely not an uber fan. I haven’t watched any of the animated shows, I haven’t read the books or the comics. I’ve pretty much just kept it to the Skywalker Saga films (plus Solo and Rogue One) and the live-action Disney+ series that have been released. Second, there are much better analyses and deep dives on the themes of the show out there and this is definitely not that. This is just me putting my thoughts out into the ether because my usual cadre of nerds either aren’t watching it or are several episodes behind which is annoying when it’s all I want to talk about.
Okay, here we go:
I think Andor is the best piece of Star Wars media that’s been released in recent years.
Don’t get me wrong, I love The Mandalorian. Go through my archives and there’s no doubt about that. It’s a great story that’s full of drama and humor and deep emotion but it hinges on a pretty big conceit. Without Grogu there is no show or at least not one that has pulled in as many viewers as it has. There’s also the fact that it still tentatively ties itself to the Skywalker Saga, which is a thing for someone else to unpack. Same with Book of Boba Fett and Obi-Wan Kenobi, they had a built in hook to grab those viewers, though with varying degrees of success.
Andor doesn’t have that. It’s main character is a man that clearly operated in a morally grey area whose fate had already been shown to audiences six years ago. I was excited to watch the show mostly because Rogue One is my favorite Star Wars movie and I loved how Diego Luna played Cassian. That we were getting his backstory was interesting but as with the other shows I was going to watch it regardless because it was expanding the universe, which always interests me.
But dear god, what we got and are getting is so much more. The themes of morality and the cost of rebellion along commentaries on the state and actions of humanity and the tightening fist of fascism woven into the plot elevate the show to a whole different level. Not to mention that it expands the universe on so many different facets it almost boggles the mind how rich and complex this one show is making the galaxy that’s far far away.
Saying that, let me share why I decided to write this:
I work at a grocery store and the other day I was ringing up a woman's groceries and my Star Wars super fan co-worker was bagging for me. She had a Mandalorian bag and we asked if she enjoyed the show, which she did, and if she was watching Andor, which she was. She then proceeded to say that Book of Boba Fett was her favorite of the shows because it was fun and funny and Andor was boring and had no story. My co-worker and I were flabbergasted, and he'd only watched the first four eps of Andor at that point. When I told my sister the story later she said that maybe the woman only liked positive stories, ones that made her feel good and didn't dig too much into deeper themes.
That, I realized, was exactly what sets Andor apart and raises it above the other series and films that I'd seen. There are no dazzling, elegant lightsaber fights, the fights are chaotic and exact a heavy toll. There's no jokey levity from droids or side characters. The show is unflinchingly bleak and any victory, small or large, is tempered by the harsh reality of swift retaliation from the Empire. An entity that has always been known to be evil but through the lack of empathy, expanding overreach and harsher punishments, and the continual implied violence against innocents showcased in the series shows the depths of their atrocities in a way that can't be ignored or shoved aside. Even the barest thread of hope is hard to come by but it's there even in the smallest act of rebellion.
The biggest thing that sets Andor apart is that we know exactly how it ends. This story doesn't have a traditional happy ending. Cassian's fate is sealed, we are merely watching as he walks the path towards his inevitable death. And somehow it doesn't detract from the series at all, it makes his struggles much more compelling and tragic.
All this and I haven't even touched on the brilliance of Luthen and Mon Mothma's own underground moves against the Empire.
This show goes beyond every expectation I had for it and elevated it into a completely different stratosphere for the Star Wars universe. After I finish each new episode I'm practically vibrating with amazement at how each one is better than the last.
Andor is a feat of storytelling that I will shout about from rooftops whether people are listening or not for a long time coming.

so glad you came around to watching andor! it's a fantastic show, and probably takes the crown for best piece of disney-era sw media. though personally, i disagree that there are themes relating to criticism of the jedi's role in the fall of the republic like there are in TCW. what i took away from the show (w/ respect to order 66) was how /removed/ it was from the classic fantasy baked into the star wars mythos. the jedi, their philosophies, the light/dark of the force, are all noticeably missing (it's even a far cry from rogue one, where we do see belief in the jedi/the force in chirrut). andor gives a very cutting commentary on how fascism is able to wipe out cultures, history, and identity. the lack of the jedi's presence is a statement on how the empire has already erased a whole culture from the fabric of the galaxy—and will continue to do so across many other planets in order to enforce its rule (thus giving a very solid backing as to how the jedi become a myth after just 20 years). again, this is my take on it—and it is neat when star wars is open to different readings of it like this
also, wall of text aside, who's your favorite character from the show? mine is, surprisingly enough, saw (who is finally being done justice by a SW media that recognizes what he's doing is necessary, lmao)
Oh, I definitely agree, anon, that Andor did not directly (or consciously) address the issues of the Jedi. That is an extended reading, from my standpoint, but one I'll stand by. But yes, one of the many strengths of Andor is that there was not a single lightsaber lit nor any reference to the Force. The characters of Andor lived and died by the strength of their humanity (or being-iality, as Andor was lacking in non-human races until we hit Coruscant lower levels, but we probably know why, don't we).
What I'm really interested in is your comment about how removed Andor is from the fantasy (Force) elements of Star Wars and this brings me to how we can possibly reconcile the two. I personally loved the fact that we got away from the Jedi and the Force and all of that for a purely political show, but how can something like Rebels make a touchstone with Andor? I could forsee a conflict with any ex-Jedi being asked to use their powers for a purpose that would further the Rebellion, but perhaps seen as "Dark Side," and be curious as to where that conversation would go.
With the Empire having wiped out the Jedi as a religion, where do Light and Dark stand anymore? (I dearly wish questions like this had been addressed in the Kenobi show). If your culture is obliterated (and the Jedi were a culture and a religion and so much more), how do you redefine this? (No wonder Luke was lost and gave it up for farming milk on some forgotten island. That is a hell of a legacy to inherit).
Okay, that's my wall of text :D Honestly, I think my favorite character is Mon Mothma in this series. She is treading this absolute highwire and ends up sacrificing everything she has for the Rebellion with a smile and drink in her hand and just, god damn. I was enraptured every time she came on screen.

Okay I could not resist any longer. For the comfort prompts: “just breathe. breathe with me.” with hurt Obi-Wan and caretaker Anakin? YOU’RE AMAZING THANK YOU 💕💕💕
“just breathe. breathe with me.”
you know I couldn't resist mixing some search-and-rescue whump with claustrophobic obi-wan. thanks for the prompt!!
It was almost dark when they finally dug him up.
The building had gone down that morning—a rogue bomb had triggered a sinkhole, bringing the whole Republic base to the ground in a matter of seconds. Only a few troopers had been inside, thankfully. The medical team fixed up the survivors as they were found, while Anakin led the rest of the troops in the search.
But by sunset, there was only one person unaccounted for.
"Status report, Commander."
Anakin approached Cody, who straightened immediately.
"Still no sign of General Kenobi, sir," he answered. "There's an area of the rubble that's particularly thick, and it's blocking our scanners. It's possible he's down there—but we haven't picked up any life signs yet..."
"Well, do better, Commander. "Possible" isn't good enough."
If Cody was taken aback by the sharpness in his tone, he didn't show it. He offered Anakin a stiff salute. "Yes, sir."
"Sorry, Cody. That was..." He exhaled. "I'm just worried."
"I know, sir."
"Yeah." Anakin ran both hands through his hair. "But I shouldn't use that as an excuse. You're trying your best. We all are. And he's—he's your..."
He didn't finish the phrase. Sensed Cody probably didn't want him to anyway. But it didn't matter, because suddenly they were both whirling around as a trooper's voice called out:
"We've got him, sir! He's here!"
And then they were both running.
The trooper was holding a scanner over the rubble, and it was all Anakin could do not to rip it from his hands. Anakin dropped to his knees and tried to probe through the ground with his mind, searching for a familiar life Force. And yes—it was weak, but it was there.
"I can lift the rubble away," Anakin said.
"Sir, respectfully, any movement should be approved by the engineering squad; the mass is unstable, and might collapse—"
"Fine, then. Show me which rocks to move. But do it fast," Anakin snapped, then huffed. "How far down is he?"
The trooper consulted the scanner. "About 10 meters, sir."
"And his air supply?"
Neither Anakin nor Cody missed the trooper's hesitation. "It could depend on a number of factors," he said cautiously. "It's...in our best interest to move quickly."
"Roger that."
And so Anakin and Cody began distributing orders, mobilizing the rest of the team and planning the most effective movements. Obi-Wan had always excelled at this sort of thing, Anakin thought—at leadership in the midst of disaster.
If only he were here now.
When he'd gotten approval from the lead engineer that the rubble was ready to move, Anakin pulled Cody aside.
"Commander...there's something else," Anakin said quietly. "When we pull him up, have a medical team ready. But no one else. There's...well, we want to give him space."
And so, even knowing Obi-Wan would be furious, he gave Cody the abridged version—how Obi-Wan wasn't fond of being trapped.
He couldn't bring himself to explain why.
"Sir, can I ask one question?"
Anakin nodded.
"General Kenobi told me once...well, how his Master died," he said. "Does this...his aversion to being confined...does it have anything to do with...?"
"Yes."
Cody nodded.
They left it there.
Anakin could feel the troopers watching him as he closed his eyes, their awe and neat disbelief rippling through the Force like waves. He used their hope, their light, to harness it now—to begin to lift the rubble.
The time passed quickly—at least for Anakin. When the sounds of the troopers' voices began to fade back into his consciousness, Anakin lightly set the rubble down and opened his eyes, unsteadily rising to his feet.
And then he heard the coughing.
"Sir," Cody said. "We've uncovered him, but the rubble on either side is unsteady. We have to extract him quickly."
"Send me down," Anakin said.
And he didn't wait for an affirmative.
Anakin rushed to the edge of the pit he'd created when clearing the rubble, peering over the side. Then, he leapt down into the crevice.
"Obi-Wan!"
Anakin pushed back some more rocks he'd been advised not to move, and slid beneath a slab of concrete. And there, coughing into his dirt-caked sleeve, was his Master.
Obi-Wan was sitting with one leg outstretched, bandaged with a piece of his tunic to quell the bleeding. The other knee was pulled to his chest, his arms wrapped around them tightly. His face was coated with dirt and blood and ash, his eyes wide.
He was breathing fast.
"Hey," Anakin said, relief and worry flooding him all at once. "There you are."
"Anakin. I--" His voice was more of a rasp. "The air—I still can't—"
"You're okay. Hey, you're okay." Anakin sunk to his knees and reached for Obi-Wan's wrists. "We found you. And we're gonna get you out."
Obi-Wan nodded. His eyes were dull. "Please."
Anakin pretended not to notice how his voice broke.
With a quick squeeze of Obi-Wan's arm, he crawled back under the concrete slab to call up to the others.
"Got him!" Through the dust, he could just make out Cody's face up above. "You can toss it down!"
A few moments later, the rope landed in front of him.
Anakin crawled back to Obi-Wan. His eyes were closed, and his breathing sounded more like a wheeze.
"Hey. We're gonna help you up, but you need to breathe. Breathe with me, okay? Nice deep ones."
Obi-Wan shook his head. "Can't."
"Yes, you can. Listen to my breaths, and--"
"No, I can't." He swallowed, wincing. "Hurts."
Oh. Anakin looked him over. If he was breathing shallowly, and the air was thin in here...
"Are you dizzy?" A nod in response. "Think you can crawl through there, then stand?"
A shrug, then a nod.
"Okay. Now your knee doesn't look good, so take your time with the crawling. After that...I've got you. You'll be fine."
He sounded sure. He wished he felt sure.
The crawling was painful for Anakin to watch--Obi-Wan's breathing came harder and more ragged until at last he popped out on the other side and rolled to stretch his leg out again. It looked like it had started to bleed again, too.
"There we go," said Anakin. "Hard part's done. You ready to get out of here?"
Obi-Wan seemed to be beyond talking at this point. He offered just another nod.
The rope had a few knots and a loop at the bottom, a place for Anakin to put his feet and somewhere to grab. Anakin tugged to let Cody know they were nearly ready, then turned back to Obi-Wan. He was still on the ground. Eyes closed again.
"Don't go to sleep on me now, old man," Anakin said. He went around behind Obi-Wan, reaching under his arms. "On three. You try to stand, I'll lift. One...two..."
Obi-Wan cried out as he put weight on his leg, and soon enough Anakin was holding him up almost entirely. They hobbled over to the rope again, and Anakin got them situated. Then, he tugged the rope one final time.
"See?" Anakin said. He was holding Obi-Wan up, and Obi-Wan's head lolled against his shoulder. "I told you I've got you."
He nodded into Anakin's tunic. And up they went.
Both of them tumbled to the ground the moment they reached the top.
"Medics!" Anakin called out, even as they already rushed forward. Obi-Wan cried out as they turned him over. There was a stretcher nearby, and Cody waited behind it. He couldn't even fathom the willpower it took Cody not to rush straight to Obi-Wan's side. Force knows I don't have it.
Kix and the other medics lined Obi-Wan's sides, to where was lying on his back. "Sir, we're going to lift you onto the stretcher."
Obi-Wan hummed. "Thank you."
The first two words he'd uttered since they'd first found him. As the medics lifted him, Anakin winced at the sharp breath he choked out.
"Kix--the base was destroyed," Anakin said. "Do we have enough medical supplies to--"
"Affirmative, sir. We don't have a lot to spare, but we have enough," Kix replied. They began to push the stretcher toward the ship. "My first assessment indicates the leg wound isn't deep. Potential fracture in the ankle. And probably a punctured lung."
"Sheesh, Master, you weren't kidding--you really couldn't breathe," Anakin said. "I thought you were just panicking."
"That too."
The subtle humor took Anakin by surprised, and he looked down to the stretcher. Obi-Wan gave him a small smile.
"Thanks for coming for me," he said softly.
"Obi-Wan," Anakin replied. As the stretcher moved along, Anakin reached down and squeezed his shoulder. "You know I always will."

Hi! Could you repost or rewrite that one ask you answered about how to watch star wars and in which order?
Hey! I am not positive in my abilities to find that ask at the moment (if I do, I can link it in here) so I’ll go ahead and just rewrite it all.
So for movie order, I am a fan of doing it in release order. Once you watch them all, you can go back and do chronological.
A New Hope (Episode IV)
Empire Strikes Back (Episode V)
Return of the Jedi (Episode VI)
then to the prequels:
The Phantom Menace (Episode I)
Attack of the Clones (Episode II)
Revenge of the Sith (Episode III)
then watch Solo followed by Rogue One. Technically both of these movies preclude episode 4, but they would have zero context without seeing the first 6 first. On a chronological order watch, they would come between 3 and 4.
For the sequels:
The Force Awakens (Episode VII)
The Last Jedi (Episode VIII)
The Rise of Skywalker (Episode IX)
Now for the shows, you can retroactively watch them after you watch the movies as they are not essential to understanding the canon movies but they do add a lot more context.
The Clone Wars (fits between episode 2 and 3)
The Bad Batch (happens after episode 3)
Obi Wan Kenobi (occurs 10 years after episode 3 and 9 years before episode 4)
Rebels (sometime between episode 3 and 4, pretty sure it’s canonically after Obi Wan)
the Mandalorian and Book of Boba Fett both happen after Return of the Jedi. Finish the Mandalorian before you start Boba Fett because part of that season shows what happens next for Mando and Grogu. By this point, if you are completely invested, you could watch a playthrough on youtube of Jedi Fallen Order which is a video game but is canon to the entire Star Wars story and happens 5 years BEFORE Obi’s show.
Whew okay, that’s a lot. Godspeed friend. Finally though, if 7 seasons of the Clone Wars is too much at first, let me know and I can provide essential episode arcs to watch. Honestly though, aside from the prequel movies, the Clone Wars is my favorite piece of SW content and is arguably the best thing that has ever come out of Star Wars. It’s absolutely fantastic. Let me know if you have questions!!

Who do you think would have been the best choice to train Anakin?
Oooh, excellent question @taulupis, and one I may not be qualified to answer.
About the Author
So, a bit of my background. I've seen the prequels, the original trilogy, the (sigh) sequel trilogy, Rogue 1, Solo, and Tartakovsky's Clone Wars (I highly recommend).
What this means is that I have no familiarity with the extended universe, with Disney's Clone Wars, Rebels, any of the video games, etc.
So a lot of characters that people know and love, I'll probably have no idea who the hell you're even talking about. I am at the level where Ahsoka is a vague concept to me and I might be able to recognize her picture if you showed it to me. Maybe.
Some Thoughts on Anakin
Something also to keep in mind is that I think Anakin Skywalker is doomed because I think the Jedi are doomed. The prequel trilogy are ultimately a tragedy, aided and abetted by the Force itself, with the destruction of the Jedi preordained.
Anakin Skywalker was the tool of both the Jedi and Sith's destruction.
No matter what master Anakin had, no matter if he made contact with Palpatine or not, no matter if he was a Jedi or not (or even a Sith for that matter), the Jedi were going to fall.
I don't think there's any escaping that.
Which of course puts a bit of a damper on the 'who should train Anakin' question. If he's going to raze the temple no matter what it simply becomes a question of how he razes the temple.
Right.
Back to Your Question
Honestly, of the prequel characters I know who were in a position to train Anakin, I actually am going to say Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Remember that no one, aside from Qui-Gon and later Obi-Wan, wanted to train Anakin as a Jedi. HIs admittance into the Order was an extremely reluctant thing and something Anakin chafed against for his entire Jedi career.
Did Obi-Wan make mistakes, miscommunicate with Anakin, and as a result fail to stop the assasination of the Jedi? Yes. However, he a) cared deeply b) genuninely put his heart into training Anakin c) didn't treat Anakin as a revered messiah.
Qui-Gon, had he lived, would likely have been a poor master per that last bullet. Qui-Gon genuinely believes Anakin will bring a peace unknown to the galaxy, to save the Jedi Order, and has many expectations for Anakin Skywalker. Qui-Gon does well enough first meeting Anakin, but I imagine Anakin would soon realize Qui-Gon's expectations were sky high and... I can't imagine that would go well.
Masters like Yoda and Mace-Windu were openly hostile towards Anakin and extremely dubious of his success. They expected him to fail and Anakin was well aware of that. Having a master like that would have been disastrous.
Obi-Wan was young, ordinarily far too young to be a master, but I think of the options available he actually was the best pick.
