Deckerstar | 52. “I think I’m in love with you and that scares me half to death.”

“Detective?” Lucifer’s voice carried in the still night air, reaching her with the rustle of his footsteps in the shadow of the building where she had fled, just beyond the reach of the lights of police cars and ambulances that had gathered at the scene. “Detective?” he called again, a rough tremble to the word. She saw his form silhouetted against the lights, looking around for her.

She took a deep breath and forced herself to unwind her trembling body from the ball she had tucked into, her back against the brick wall. “Here,” she called back, pushing to her feet. Her voice scraped in her throat, rusty. She raised an arm and stepped into the light where he could see her. “I’m over here.”

He looked around at the sound of her voice, his shoulders relaxing, and jogged over to her. He stopped a few paces away, ducking his head a little too see her face. “Chloe?”

She gave him a tremulous smile. “Sorry,” she said. “I didn’t mean to bolt like that. I . . .” She trailed off.

He frowned. “You’re sorry?” He took a step toward her and she closed the distance between them,  reaching up to touch his face. He was back to normal now, his skin warm and smooth under his stubble, dark brown eyes black pools in the dark rather than glowing red jewels.

His hand covered hers. “I didn’t mean to frighten you,” he said.

She laughed, a strangled, half-hysterical sound, and let her hand fall. “You didn’t.”

“I didn’t?” His brow furrowed, questioning, uncertain.

“No.”

She had seen his face before, his other face, the face he called a monster, but never so close, never for so long. When he’d thrown himself between her and the murderer they’d been tracking for nearly a month, he’d shown his full Devil form, eyes blazing red, a snarl on his lips, but that wasn’t what Chloe had run from. She reached up and touched him again.

She hadn’t run from him. She had run from what she realized when she saw the face he’d refused to show her, scarred and terrifying and so very, very sad. She’d run from the deluge of feelings she could no longer deny, the knowledge that what lay between them wouldn’t be pushed aside any longer, because now she had seen his face, the face he’d been too ashamed to let her see, and she had felt no fear.

Nothing about him frightened her. And that was terrifying.

Her fingers slid over his cheek to his lips. He held very still. After a moment she raised her eyes to his. “You don’t scare me,” she said.

The flare of hope and gratitude in his eyes stabbed her to the quick. “Really?”

“Really. I—I think I’m in love with you, and that scares me half to death.”

He laughed, his eyes bright in the flashing lights. He mirrored her gesture, his fingers caressing her cheek, tracing the line of her jaw to her lips. “It scares me, too,” he said. “I don’t know where this is going to take me. Us.”

She stretched up on tiptoe to kiss him, pulled back just far enough to speak. “I guess we’ll find out together.”

Ok, um...five favorite stories. I’m going in chronological order, because I couldn’t pick my most favorite.

1. Starting Over (Doctor Who)

This was my first multichapter fic, and my response to Donna getting mindwiped at the end of s5. It’s the last fic I wrote in the DW fandom, which was also the first fandom I wrote in. I’m proud of it because I feel like I developed a lot as a fic writer in that fandom, and this story really represents the things I love about DW and what fic can do when canon goes off the rails (because Donna really deserves to fly around in the TARDIS and NOT have her memory wiped.)

2. The Safe and Sound Job (Leverage)

A bit of fluffy h/c and OT3, the first and only fic I’ve written in the Leverage ‘verse (though I’d like to write some more at some point...) I wrote this as a side project when I was still actively working on a VERY long WIP (which I have since probably abandoned, at least for the time being), and it felt really good to focus in on a particular character and event and actually finish something. It was also my first foray into writing OT3. 

3. Safe (Lucifer)

My first Lucifer fic, which I started after binging s1 and part of s2 and having my brain eaten by this amazing, amazing show. I was particularly interested in exploring the implications of the fact that if Lucifer were hurt, Chloe wouldn’t be able to be physically near him because of her effect on him. It evolved into something a lot bigger and more complex, and I’m still really happy with it as my first fic in this fandom.

4. Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine (Lucifer)

I promise this is not as dark as the title makes it sound, lol. My summer hiatus/post-s2 fic, in which Maze and Chloe drive out to the desert and find Lucifer after he disappears, and Lucifer grapples with having his wings back and what that might mean. The title is a line from Mary Oliver’s poem “Wild Geese.”

5. Into the Spin (Lucifer)

My most recent fic, for the summer Deckerstar exchange (prompt from @fallendeckerstar). I’m really proud of this one. I stretched a lot as a writer by pushing myself to come up with a detailed case for them to work, and got to explore some of my ideas about angel mythology in this verse. It takes place chronologically after “Despair,” in that I’m assuming the reveal from the earlier fic, but can be read on its own.

15. Obscure ships in your current fandom

Honestly, I my shipping tastes tend to be pretty mainstream--mostly canon ships the popular slash ones. In Lucifer, it’s all about Deckerstar and Laze for me.

Outside of Lucifer fandom, I am quite fond of Loki/Annie, in @coneycat‘s very excellent Thor/Being Human crossover universe. (One day, I’ll finally finish my WIP in that ‘verse, which she was so gracious to let me come play in.)

51. Rant or gush about one thing you love or hate in the world of fanfic

I will gush. One of the things I love about the world of fanfic is that it’s a community of writers who are doing it for fun, and create a community around it. I’ve sort of dipped in and out of fandom as my RL life has allowed and as I’ve needed, but at a few times in my life writing and reading fanfic and interacting with other authors were real lifelines for me. They gave me a source of community and pleasure when I was feeling isolated and lonely and directionless, and I’ll always be grateful for that.

1. First fandom: I lurked in Wheel of Time fandom throughout middle and high school, and I posted a bit on some Buffy message boards during that time, though. The first fandom I became active in (and wrote fic for) was Doctor Who.

I would loooove to go scuba diving in Australia. I fell in love with diving when I learned about ten years ago but I only get to go every few years, and I really want to see the Great Barrier Reef.

My other dream trip is to go to Scotland and hike the West Highland Way. I’ve driven along it and it’s beautiful, and I’d love to spend a week or two walking from town to town and really taking in the landscape.
