I quite like the idea that Arthur has been keeping a diary this entire time, only Mina didn't include it with the documents for some reason. Possible reasons include:

His spelling is appalling and his handwriting is illegible, so it would be too much effort to type up.

It is so embarrassingly soppy about literally everyone that even Mina I-heart-my-husband-forever Harker thought that it was a bit much to share.

It is extremely explicit and makes it very clear that Arthur and Lucy did not wait until marriage before getting it on, and in fact did so at every possible opportunity.

It's full of unprintable and defamatory bitchy gossip about the entire upper crust of British society.

Literally the entire thing about about his dogs, like "Thinking about breeding Rascal to Scamper. Will need to wait for Scamper's hurt paw to heal, though. re: Wicked - it’s also that way to an extent in the stage show, but they spend less time at school (the whole show is ~15 minutes shorter than the movie, which just adapts act 1) so it stands out less. I’m a rare “the original Oz books > every other adaptation especially this one”, so I can’t say I’ve seen the stage show dozens of times, but I do remember that the principals there do dress differently than the other students. My guess is that the reason in this movie is just “well it was that way onstage”.

yeah, you can play with that kind of thing in a stage show because theatre is so elevated/abstract you can take shortcuts (ie big neon sign over the lead saying "this is the lead"). film is necessarily more in-world though so it calls for different design choices....however with that said jury is OUT until i see it though, no hate (yet)

The "I must write no more! I must keep it to say to Jonathan, my husband" is funny because he's not even her husband yet!

I do love that line. It does so much. As you say, it's funny - she's not married to him yet, she's enjoying dreamily saying the word husband to herself.

But it also tells us a lot about her absolute faith in Jonathan. Let's break that down a little. She has plenty of reasons to be confident:

Mr Hawkins, Jonathan's employer and father-figure, is encouraging her to travel and get married

She and Jonathan are already engaged, and presumably have been for a while

She knows Jonathan has been speaking of nothing but her since he started to get better

But she also has reasons for caution:

The suggestion that she and Jonathan should get married asap hasn't come from Jonathan himself - she doesn't actually know how he feels about the idea

She has no idea how ill Jonathan is or whether his recovery will continue

She's gambling on his ability to provide for them both in the future

And this is probably the first time she's ever travelled overseas!

But she doesn't entertain a moment's fear or doubt. Instead she goes straight to thinking of Jonathan as her husband, before the wedding has even had a chance to take place.
