Fantasy Flight Games took an interesting approach with the splitting of their Star Wars lines. Most previous games had split things across eras, providing a core rulebook along with separate sourcebooks which covered things like the prequels or various animated series. But FFG broke away from that, instead opting to release a series of stand-alone core books which presented different kinds of campaigns. The first Edge of the Empire giving you a rogue and scoundrels games and the second, this, Age of Rebellion, focusing on ordinary heroes fighting against the Empire. 

It makes sense in some ways– given the way the Star Wars Expanded Universe had been tossed into the dustbin. Pinning things on particular series and materials could be a good way to have those things become dated or superseded. By taking a more generic approach, the books have a longer potential shelf life. It does mean we end up with three different core books which players interested in everything would have to buy. And that doesn’t count all the supplemental micro-transactionish card sets for the different character classes (about 40 in total) and other decks like Adversary sets for GMs. 

The line has been otherwise supported with a mix of dedicated Age of Rebellion releases (Desperate Allies, Cyphers and Masks, Strongholds of Resistance, etc) and books intended to be used across all three lines (Starships and Speeders, Collapse of the Republic, A Call for Heroes). There’s just a ton of individual releases for these game lines. 

Those, however, are no longer under Fantasy Flight’s umbrella. Like the Legend of the Five Rings rpg, these lines are now managed by Edge Studios. That’s another arm of the massive Asmodee Entertainment Complex. What’s going to be really interesting to see what happens in the next few years. Asmodee was acquired by game-company hungry Embracer Group who made big news last year buying up a ton of video game licenses and companies. However news hit recently that Embracer has taken a major hit after a saudi investment group pulled out of a massive deal with them at the last minute.

finally FINALLY Asmodee Italia re-printed the expansion for Star Wars Rebellion after idunno 45 years approx (by the most recent data)

I immediately bought it from my FLGS, tore it open, and put aaaaall the components in the base box, mixing and matching as per instructions to my heart's content.
