[The Piper at the Gates of Dawn] [Pink Floyd] [1967] [LP] It's hard to believe that the release of Pink Floyd's debut album was 55 years ago yesterday. . I don't necessarily rate this debut album as one of Pink Floyd's best, but it is a very well-made solid psychedelic pop album which was also relatively successful. . "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn" is a typical psychedelic pop album of the time with many creative ideas. However, there were many other bands besides the Beatles who made exactly this kind of music, some even better. I know, some Pink Floyd fans might want to stone me for this statement. But that's how I see or hear it. . In honour of Pink Floyd (which is one of my favourite bands after all!) I can name at least two titles that are outstanding. Perhaps you can already guess. Firstly, there is the brilliant "Astronomy Domine", which can also be found in an even better live version on the 1969 album "Ummagumma", and the wacky "Interstellar Overdrive". These two great pieces alone justify the existence of the whole album! I also find the tracks "Pow R. Toc H", "Take Up Thy Stethoscope and Walk" and "Chapter 24" particularly worth mentioning.

Pink Floyd are a band who have constantly repackaged and re-presented themselves. They’ve done this throughout their career; it should be no surprise that these reissues, remasters and endless retrospective compilations have continued in their twilight years. Although this doesn’t come with gimmicks like the flashing lights of the 1995 live album Pulse, and it attempts to cover 27 years with 26 tracks across ‘only’ two CDs, it does a pretty good job and is arguably the best of recent ‘greatest hits’ packages. Of course, for an ‘albums band’ like PF there are few hits in the sense of chart-topping singles, but that never stopped them releasing a retrospective before. Face it, that’s how record companies make their money. What I like best about this is that it doesn’t attempt chronological order. Whereas that would be interesting to hear for a band who have evolved through very clear epochs, it would likely be a turn off for the more casual listener. Therefore, arguably the only appropriate opener, Astronomy Domine, is followed by See Emily Play, The Happiest Days of Our Lives from The Wall, then Another Brick In The Wall, before segueing into 16+ minutes of Echoes. Despite the mix of eras and styles, it works. Mainly because the music is so good. It’s been mixed so the songs merge into one another giving it the concert set list feel, hence many of the tracks have an early fade out or have seen some editing from the original album release. There are of course many classic Floyd tracks which aren’t on here, most notable in their omission being Interstellar Overdrive and Breathe from Dark Side of the Moon, but no doubt they’ll be on another compilation at some point in the future. Or just as likely, are being listened to right now as top twenty hits in a parallel universe. Signals from space

Whether you’re scrambling up Mount Everest or trekking the Sahara Desert, you’re never more than a few seconds from your friends. That’s because telephones and the internet, linked by space satellites, can zap messages from any place on Earth to anywhere else at the speed of light.

Earth might seem huge but no two places are more than half its circumference apart- and a beam of light can cover that distance in less than a tenth of a second. When you chat to friends in faraway countries by phone or online, the sound of your voice the image of your face on your webcam, or the message you type is bounced across Earth in less than a second via satellites in space. Signals from space satellites can also tell us exactly where we are. Thanks to technology like GPS (Global Positioning System), getting lost has now become almost impossible.

Assisted GPS

A mobile phone can locate roughly where it is by its connection to the nearest transmitter mast. Assisted GPS uses Wi-Fi and GPS signals to precisely locate a mobile  phone’s so it can tell you exactly where you are.

When signals are blocked by trees or large buildings Assisted GPS is used to help to determine a location

Radio-Wave signals from Wi-Fi internet hotspots help mobile phones pinpoint their location.

Mobile Phones

These send and receive calls at the speed of light using microwaves (very small radio waves).

Mounted on high buildings mast relay calls from mobile phones to the landline phone network

Satellite navigation

A car’s “sat-nav” uses a stored database of maps linked to GPS receiver detects your changing position. A computer in the sat-nav calculates how fast you are moving and continually redraws the map to show your progress.

GPS Signals

No signal satellite could cover every place on Earth at once. That’s why the GPS systems has a network of at least 24 seprate spacecrafts. No matter wherever you are, at least four of them are sending signals to your phones.

Finding your positions

It takes less than a second for a GPS signal to reach Earth from space. Travelling at a speed of light. Knowing how long the signal took, a GPS reciever calculates the how far is the satellite is. Using signals from at least three satellites, it is possible to calculate your precise location.
