Eddie's amusement over Steve’s push for romance lasts all up until the point that he’s pacing in Jeff’s basement, dragging a mirror out from behind a stack of boxes. It screeches against the grey concrete.

Once Eddie stands in front of it he quickly brushes at his jeans, somehow a smudge of chalk had made its way onto the black denim. Pursing his lips as he regards his hair, he looks through the mirror at Jeff strumming on his guitar behind him. “Hair up or down?”

Jeff squints at him, “I can’t believe you won’t tell me who he is.” He plays a few chords from I Heard It Through the Grapevine, scowling in mock disappointment. “Some best friend you are.”

Eddie thinks of Steve saying he’d wanted to embrace him from behind at Scoops and starts to make a loose bun. “Up, I think. He likes my neck.”

Jeff blows a raspberry at him, “Now you’re just bragging.” Eddie turns with his hands still in his hair, grinning. “I am, aren’t I?” He hums along as Jeff continues to play Marvin Gaye, trying to work out why that jittery feeling has returned...

"You often hear the voice of an inner part of yourself that makes negative comments about what you are doing, or says that you are stupid. You react by being afraid of that part, and even of hearing the voice, and ashamed because you believe what it says is true (at least on some level). Sometimes your reaction to the voice is so painful that you engage in some destructive behavior to make it stop, such as using alcohol or drugs, physically hurting yourself, or overeating. This cycle may go on and on. You may label yourself as crazy because you hear this voice and you feel very ashamed (see chapter24). Reflective skills can help you observe the process of what happens when you hear this voice, and to change your reaction to it, and eventually to change the entire interchange between you and that critical part of you. You can begin to notice what you feel as you hear that voice: perhaps crazy, or afraid, or ashamed, or frustrated. You notice when you hear that voice, you stop talking in therapy and perhaps have a panic attack. Every time you hear that inner criticism, you notice that you cringe, your body gets tight, your head hangs down, and you do not want to move. When you can notice your tendency to react without doing so immediately, you can then begin to respond differently. You can be curious about why that voice is there (you may have always assumed it is there just to speak the “truth” about yourself, but there are likely other reasons). You could begin to dialogue with the part whose voice you are hearing. You could ask that part of you to help, and begin to work to develop inner empathy and cooperation, as you will be learning through this manual. You can empathize with yourself about how painful it is to always feel criticized, scared, less than others, hopeless. You can empathize with how hard that part of you works, yet never seems to get satisfactory results. You could take some deep breaths, hold your head up, and put your shoulders back. You have options to respond to the voice that you did not have before."

Hurricane Fiona’s Course Through Puerto Rico Stirs Debate On The Island’s Electric Grid

Puerto Rico has recently been seen at the very top of news headlines. The very reason for such popularity, renders back to Hurricane Category 1 Fiona. As a Category 1 Hurricane, Fiona when compared to Hurricane Maria Category 4 back in 2017, resulted in even more environmentally catastrophic conditions for the residents of Puerto Rico. More specifically, only hours after the ongoing hurricane was set to take landfall in the island, a nationwide power outage occurred, leaving 100% of the island without power, and in the uncertainty for water and safety. As of October 2nd, 2022, around 100,000 out the 1.5 million electrical consumers remain without power. (NPR) Recently, President Joe Biden has placed a waiver to the Merchant Marine Act of 1920, most commonly known as The Jones Act, putting a temporary end to solely allowing US flagged ships from entering the island's coast. It’s relevant to point out that this was primarily due to the news of a British Petroleum Boat bearing 300,000 barrels of diesel floating on the southern coasts of the island. (NPR) After the Merchant Marine Act 1920 was waived, the island has been able to receive merchandise and supplies from across the world, aiding faster restructuring. On another note, the impact of this Act has triggered an array of questioning in regard to its power and prevalence in active times of environmental crisis.

The Merchant Marine Act 1920 is not the only one facing major backlash from locals and certain government officials. The Implementation of a financial oversight board under a US federal law known as PROMESA, has sparked even more debate on the political and legal autonomy of the island. This overseeing board was first established in 2016, in the task to plan and actively establish Puerto Rico’s debt repayment. Its most recent controversy emerged from the board's approval of a privatizing contract between AEE, the island's former public electric company and LUMA, a Canadian-American power company now responsible for Puerto Rico electrical grid. (Cite contact) It was highlighted by the major Puerto Rican News Agency, El Nuevo Día, that the board reviewed the 336 page extensive contract in simply 3 days, and the general assembly for approval only lasted 45 minutes. (El Nuevo Día) It has been highlighted by locals that ever since the takeover of LUMA energy in the island, bills have more than septuple and an increase in power outages have left community members disconcerted. Even now, in relevance to the aftermath of Hurricane Fiona, the island faces a slow yet dangerous crisis with the future of its power and electrical grid. Many environmentalists have argued that the continuity of environmental catastrophes like that of Hurricane Fiona have simply begun. (cite) If this is the case, Puerto Rico’s electrical infrastructure needs to be improved to a durable and robust state, since previous restoration efforts after Hurricane Maria failed. (NPR) Now, the question is whether Puerto Rico has the right geopolitical relationship with the United States, and whether as a self-governed commonwealth, they could execute the restoration of the electric and power infrastructure.
