Here’s this week’s Ask the Fandom, from a lovely anon follower:
When does Logan realize that Veronica still has feelings for him in S2? Is it in 2x08, or does he think she's just yelling at him?

I just keep remembering that Rob never intended for the kiss at the Camelot to be romantic.  he says he wanted Logan to “devour” Veronica, he wanted the kiss to be “mixed with some self-loathing or confusion”.  in retrospect, it looks like Rob was really trying to write the show as nihilist and edgy all along, and Jason playing Logan as human got in the way, because by the time we get to Weapons of Class Destruction, we (and Veronica) have already seen that Logan is lovable.
and then I think about that scene in 4x02 that I hated so much, and hey, Rob finally got the scene he wanted - but it feels like he had to sacrifice Veronica’s humanity to do it.

i wasn’t supposed to leave (i belong here)
a Jeronica Sons of Anarchy AU
Chapter 4
Veronica is pulled from the files when she hears her office door open. Looking up, she’s faced with fear itself.
Nick St. Clair.
Standing up quickly, she looks around her desk to find something, anything at all that might hurt if struck by it. All she sees is the pen she was using, taking a mental note of its exact whereabouts, just in case she needs to grab it quickly.
Nick’s smile is both sickening and smooth. He saunters in slowly, fingers dancing along the walls of her office, touching everything that belongs to her. She feels a lump rising up her throat, unsure if it were just nerves, or the sensation of becoming sick.
“You’re not supposed to be here, Nick,” she says slowly, trying to find refuge behind her desk.
He puts up his hands as if in truce but he still smiles and it still doesn’t feel right. “I just wanted to say hello, Veronica, I don’t want to hurt you.”
“What are you doing here?!” she hisses, gritting her teeth.
He pauses on the other side of her desk, taking a seat on one of the office chairs. “I just thought it would be rude if I came to Riverdale and didn’t make myself known to you, you know, considering the restraining order…”
Veronica can feel him on her skin, his smug smile even when she blinks. She tries to keep the sickness from her voice, not wanting to anger him. “That’s the point of the restraining order, you’re not supposed to make yourself known to me.”
Nick chuckles, shaking his head. “Oh Veronica, you’re so funny!” he laughs manically. “I’m in town for a while, I’m working on a case with the ATF…”
She doesn’t say anything, still aware of the distance between her fingers and the pen she’s willing to plunge into his skin if necessary. “What does that have to do with me?”
“We’re going to take down the Southside Serpents. They’re going to be gone for a long, long time. So, you tell me what it has to do with you.”
Veronica thinks of Jughead. Wishing he were here now and would randomly pop into her office. She thinks about Nick’s new case and what it might mean for Jughead and the club. As much as she knows that the Serpents are no good, she can’t bear the idea of Jughead being locked up for a long time, just as Nick is promising. “Nothing,” she mutters. “It has nothing to do with me.”

Hands shoved in his pockets, he wandered the street, mind racing. A red ring hung around the full moon, and his heart felt like ice in his chest. He stood, staring at it, feet planted on the path at the end of his street.
“Jones,” a now familiar voice came from behind him, and he flinched, turning to face her.
“Agent,” he responded. “Following me?”
She just smirked in response. Her blonde hair was out of her ponytail, a blue pea coat hung over her shoulders. She looked… nice. Of course, she was beautiful, that was an objective truth. But she looked different than when dressed in her usual garb. Less like a threat. It caught him off guard.

Please do "We need to talk" for reader b x reader a and Veronica. I need to know what happened after mc!Sonny made reader a end her friendship with reader a and Veronica.
takes place about a week after this
Tumblr media
You rolled your shoulders slowly and winced before sighing. The knot that had worked its way under your shoulder blade was still there, but it was getting smaller. You hoped. The flimsy plastic cup of water folded under the grip of your hand before you had to remind yourself to unclench. Relax. Breathe. You’d been repeating this mantra to yourself for nearly a week now and it wasn’t doing much. Anger shadowed you and brought along its companions, frustration and hurt. You had a feeling that you could get a massage every single day and still be just as tense. And angry. And hurt.
As you passed by one of the rooms the door suddenly opened and a hand shot out and grabbed you, pulling you inside and shutting the door behind you immediately. You flailed out in response, mouth open and ready to scream even as you made a fist to let fly. The water was all down your jeans and shoes, but you hardly noticed with all of the adrenaline pumping.
“I told you she’d try to murder us,” a familiar voice complained.
You blinked and took a look at the scene in front of you. Veronica perched on the edge of the massage table and Nick’s old lady to the side, intentionally out of swinging distance if the expression on her face was anything to go by.
“And I told you she wouldn’t hurt you,” Veronica retorted with a smirk. “See? No one got hurt.”
“I almost killed you,” you interjected gruffly. “Have we not had enough excitement around here recently? Lest I remind you that two of us in this room have been kidnapped in the last six months.”
Nick’s old lady made a face and looked away. You watched as her mood shifted almost instantly. Nothing like mentioning kidnapping to really kill the vibe. Veronica winced and bit her bottom lip as she swept to her feet. You spared a half thought for how she always managed to make every moment look so elegant, but intentional. Outwardly she always seemed to have it together.
“We’re sorry,” Veronica apologized with a hand to her chest. “But you’re not answering your phone. You left the group chat…” her face scrunched up in confusion. “We need to talk about what’s going on.”
You sighed and drifted deeper into the room. The inside was almost identical to the one you had just exited. The only chair in the room was the low rolling stool so you dropped your purse on the table and plopped down on that heavily. You planted your feet in order to not go flying before adjusting yourself and then stretching out your legs.
“Sonny found out that her and I were out together shooting the other day.” You rolled your heels back and forth. “Nick came in one day when I was on the way out mad as a bull and accusing me of trying to break up his relationship. Then Sonny got pissed because…well, he’s still really sensitive to anything involving Nick right now after Matty…”
You looked up to meet Veronica’s eye. She had a sympathetic look on her face and part of you missed that and the other part of you was angry at her for being so compassionate all the damn time.
“We had a falling out. He told me I was his old lady and he was putting his foot down and I couldn’t hang out with or text anyone from Guardianes.” You rubbed at your jaw and pressed your lips together firmly. “If he finds out I was in here with the two of you…”
Veronica closed the distance between you and bent down to wrap her arms around you. Your own arms felt like lead and you let them hang limply beside you. She didn’t seem to be deterred and you closed your eyes and exhaled. She smelled vaguely of lavender and peppermint, no doubt from the essential oils she used, and after another beat you brought your arms up to return the hug.
“I’m sorry,” Nick’s old lady said.
You blinked your eyes open and Veronica stepped back.
“I’m so fucking sorry,” she continued. “I didn’t—I wasn’t thinking clearly. Nick—”
“I know,” you interrupted with a wave of your hand. “It’s my fault, not yours. I was the one who didn’t tell Sonny and I was the one who knew he’d be ticked.”
“He really said all of that?” she asked as she crept forward.
You chewed on the inside of your cheek and nodded. That had probably been the most Sonny had said to you in days. They didn’t need to do that.
“Can’t you do something?” Veronica asked. She tucked her hair behind her ear. “You and Sonny are like…solid. Sonny adores you. He doesn’t treat you like you’re just an ‘old lady.’”
“He’s got some right,” Nick’s old lady huffed. You watched as her eyes narrowed and her hands formed fists by her side. “After the shit he’s pulled in the past and you always forgave him. Who is he to take this away from you?” She gestured at the room at large.
“He’s who he’s always been,” you said wearily. You tilted your head back and studied the ceiling. “He’s the president and I’m the old lady.”
“Aren’t you…angry?”
“I’m fucking mad as hell,” you spit. “And sad.” The admittance was easier than you thought it would be. “I feel like so much has changed and I’ve lost so many people I care about.” To your horror you felt tears threatening and you sniffed hard and looked upwards again. “We have to give him some time. It’ll blow over. Probably.”
“Time? How much time?” Veronica asked with an uncharacteristically stormy expression. She crossed her arms over her chest. “Can’t you just…not listen?” She waved her hand in the air vaguely before tucking it back by her chest.
“No,” you answered simply. “It’ll get him hurt, we start doing some back and forth shit? He hurts me, I hurt him? It’ll—there’s too much at stake, too much that’s precarious. He needs to focus all of his energy on the club and ATF and whatever else. If he gets caught up in our shit…”
“So, you’re not allowed to have feelings because he’s the president?” Nick’s old lady scoffed.
You smiled faintly. When you’d first met her you weren’t so sure she’d last. She knew next to nothing about the MC world. It was obvious she coped by not thinking about all of the illegal stuff Nick was doing in between seeing her. But now, there was a fire and grit about her. The fact that it was so hard won made your heart ached and it also ached for some of that naïveté she still managed to have.
“I’m not going to deliberately try to get back at Sonny because it may get him killed,” you said plainly. The mood in the room shifted again and you got to your feet. “And I’m tired of burying people I love.”
You scooped up your bag and kissed Veronica’s temple. With arms extended for a hug you approached Nick’s old lady.
“Give it some time.” Her hair in your face muffled the words. “The two of you are lucky.” You pulled back and held her with arms extended. “You have each other. Don’t take that for granted, okay?”
She nodded and when you looked over her shoulder at Veronica she nodded as well. You smiled and let your arms drop. Hefting your shoulder up on your bag you gave them a little wave and walked towards the door.
“We’ll all be back to normal before you know it. In the meantime…”
“Take no shit,” they said in unison with you.
“There you go. Taught you girls well.”
With another half smile and nod you slipped from the room.

ASK THE FANDOM--RESPONSES
Here’s this week’s Ask the Fandom question:
How long, if ever, would it have taken “our Veronica” to break out of her Pink Veronica shell if Lilly hadn’t died? How would the relationships within the Fab Four be different or the same compared to flashbacks if Lilly wasn’t killed?
Tumblr media
And here’s what you had to say:
@endlessly-besotted--Personally, I think she never would have broken out of her shell. From what little we have seen of Veronica before Lilly’s death, it seems like she is content to fill the role of sidekick. Once Lilly is gone, that’s when Veronica is forced to step out from behind Lilly’s shadow and begin to redefine who she is without Lilly’s influence.
@minipsychologist--I think she was already breaking out. She is the one that willingly helped make fake id’s, and she didn’t shy away from looking at naked pictures (she blushed and acted shocked, but she did not avert her eyes). She was taking notes from Lilly, she just kept in to herself. Overall, you don’t get her sass and wit overnight. It takes years to get to that level, so I truly believe that she was on the cusp of letting it all out.
I believe that Duncan played a bigger role in who she was rather then Lilly. I feel like Lilly knew Veronica as the kick ass soccer player pre-Duncan and then Duncan era Veronica tamed herself down to be what Duncan needed (he def. had a type, and Meg and pre-series Veronica were it), and Lilly wasn’t the biggest fan of that. While we don’t see it, Duncan gives off those vibes of being the boyfriend that states “you look so pretty with long hair”, “I like you in pastels”, “you look so much better when you’re fully covered up”, etc. I can see Veronica falling for that/not knowing that it’s not the healthiest relationship.
If Lilly hadn’t died, and Duncan/Veronica stayed broken up, Veronica would have ended up a lot closer to who she is during the series pretty quickly.
@cheshirecatstrut--Personally, I always assumed Pink Self-Effacing Sidekick Veronica was just a phase. It’s how V behaved as a young, hard-working, well-behaved have-not hanging with glamorous and charismatic haves. She was a little starstruck pre-series, and still learning self-possession.
We can already see, in the season 1 flashbacks, hints of a more assertive and confident Veronica–in the way she cuts Yolanda off at the knees, in the way she crushes on and sabotages her best friend’s boyfriend. She might not have adopted the androgynous styling and penchant for detective work if Lilly hadn’t died, and she hadn’t been raped; her appearance and lifestyle choices might have stayed conventional. But I think eventually, and certainly after Lilly went off to college, she would have grown more sexual and social confidence and come into her own.
And I do honestly believe Logan and Veronica would have ended up dating regardless. The attraction and compatibility were always there–Veronica had  the vengeful mean-girl tendencies Logan admires from the start, he’s the boy most like her beloved father. And the Kanes always planned to move on to more-far-flung and fancier lives…to them, Logan and V were temporarily-entertaining toys.
@iamjmgardner--I think that it’s important to remember that while Lilly’s murder and the ensuing case played a huge role in Veronica’s transformation, her sexual assault, etc. Veronica was still living her life as the child of an alcoholic.
The books give us more perspective on this to see that Lianne’s drinking had always been present in Veronica’s life–had always been a problem in the Mars family. Her drinking didn’t start up once Keith went after Jake–Lianne was always struggling with her own demons.
Knowing this, I think Veronica finds a welcome distraction and solace in the FabFour. I think Lilly’s problems with her parents help Veronica take her mind off of her own problems and Lilly’s wildness allows Veronica to play-act the more “normal, sweet, pretty in pink” teenage girl that she *thinks* she wants to be. Veronica’s problem has always been denying who she really is because “normal” seems easier or better than the truth. I think the version we see of Veronica pre-series was no more the “real” Veronica then the girl we see at the start of the movie. It was the part she was playing during those crucial middle-to-high school years trying to be normally while her mother continued to drink, her parents continued to fight, and she desperately wished her life were normal.
Then, when everything happens with Lilly, she’s heartbroken. Her mom becomes more public with her drinking and eventually splits. Logan starts to highlight all the imperfections in her life because he’s a master at it, and Veronica gets angry because she can’t go on pretending any more. She’s going to have to embrace the truth of her life mess and all, rebuild, and move forward. She does this successfully throughout S1.
♥✰_Nat♔Nat_✰ ♥‏ @NatNat (via Twitter)--Honestly I think that this is a no-brainer. Lily's death was needed for Veronica's character progression. She became stronger and more badass while in search for lily's killer.
cattyk8‏ @catty_k8 (via Twitter)-- I like to think of the evolution out of Pink Veronicaness as a question of causation rather than inevitability? Maybe if nothing life-altering happened, she'd have stayed pink. But she was always smart & probably always snarky (if secretly so—possibly why Lilly kept pushing her).

Veronica Mars Rewatch Season 1 Part 6
“Weapons of Class Destruction”
I feel like this episode is famous for some reason??
Oh yeah! My favorite couple in the show get together in this one!
They’re Keith and Alicia -- who did you think I was talking about?
- Leo and V isn’t only creepy because of the 29-month age difference, but because she’s a minor in high school and he’s a full-time cop.
- Also, as a journalist, I GO CRAZY WHEN I WATCH THIS EPISODE! See notes with asterisks ** for more details.
- CORNY!! Oh, I hope Corny’s in the revival.
- Ok, so the Sheriff’s Office knows about the bomb threats but Ellen Roush,  a DISTRICT ADMINISTRATOR, doesn’t. (And we know she doesn’t, because when Veronica calls Clemmons pretending to be her, Clemmons tells her about the threats for the first time, thinking he’s talking to the assistant superintendent of schools.) That means the principal of the district’s high school has CALLED THE COPS on bomb threats but HASN’T told anyone in the school administration, much less parents and members of the public, about the threats. I know school principals who have been fired for less. **
- Like, how the fuck is the sheriff’s office not coordinating with district administation??? I’m not even sure it’s legal for cops to respond to calls at public schools without notifying the district superintendent. At the very least, they’d be coordinating with school resources officers, who I’m pretty sure report straight to district administrators, not principals and certainly not fucking assistant principals.**
- And all this is happening at a PUBLIC SCHOOL. Paid for by TAXPAYERS. **
-  And if Neptune were anything like the community I work in (and trust me, it’s a lot like the community I work in) then parents who heard about the constant fire drills from their kids would be curious enough to call the district office AND the local newspaper, and you can bet your ass we’d be trying to get to the bottom of all this if we got tipped off by a teacher or a parent (and we WOULD get tipped off by a teacher or a parent). **
- Also, if Clemmons hasn’t told the district officials, he definitely hasn’t told the school board. You think Sabrina Fuller’s mom hasn’t been told by Sabrina that her studying’s being interrupted by constant fire drills? And you think Sabrina Fuller’s mom isn’t able to figure out why the fuck that is when the district superintendent answers directly to her and the rest of the board? **
- THIS IS A TAXPAYER-FUNDED OPERATION, CLEMMONS, NOT A FUCKING DICTATORSHIP! **
- And he’s also not telling teachers -- TEACHERS -- about the threats because the journalism sub doesn’t know about it. What the fuck, Clemmons? **
- Also, an extra fuck-you to him for saying Veronica should never have called the assistant superintendent. Students should be able to go to district administration. **
- Basically what I’m saying is, Clemmons and probably the rest of the office administration at Neptune High, along with the school resource officers, would have all been fired immediately if any of this shit happened in real life.
- And another thing, the threats are being INVESTIGATED BY THE ATF, IT’S NOT LIKE THEY DON’T TAKE THE THREATS SERIOUSLY, my God and Jesus Christ and Mary and Joseph this episode makes me SEE RED. **
- Ok, rant over. I’m taking it off pause. Back to regular note-taking.
- “You’d never believe how insane the administration office is. Phones ringing off the hook, parents going off on Clemmons.” Yeah, they fucking should be going off on him.
- Ok, NOW my rant’s over.
- Also the interview in the office makes me mad. I just want to punch Clemmons in the face.
- I do love the part where Miss Stafford grins while Veronica’s imitating Ms. Roush.
- Also, super unprofessional of Clemmons to criticize Miss Stafford to the extent he does in front of a student.
- “I gotta say, Veronica, I’m getting a little tired of doing you favors.” That’s fair. I think Veronica’s a better friend to Wallace than I gave her credit for when I first watched the show, but that’s definitely a fair statement.
- I actually really like the scene between V and Duncan in the journalism room, because it highlights just how excellent a murder suspect Duncan is. Just watching Duncan work it out is great.
- And now we’re on the way to the Camelot -- I feel like something important happens there.
- Also I don’t care if Jonathan Taylor Thomas is a federal agent, the only reason he has for not telling V that in the parking lot is to get her in a room alone with him and scare the bejeezus out of her, because some guys specifically become cops because they get off on that shit.
- Logan’s like an overprotective Doberman, and it’s super cute.
- *Swoon*
- So that first kiss is full-on V trying to kiss him on the cheek and missing because she’s short and I know that because I am also short and I have also kissed boys in places I didn’t mean to kiss them because they’re taller than me and I can’t reach.
- Mr. Clemmons deserves to have his hand impaled by throwing stars this ep.
- Is the line “No, you can just hand them back to me,” supposed to seem threatening? I felt like it was the first time I watched it, but now I’m not getting as strong a vibe in that particular moment, although he does get very up in her face to ask her out.
- “Mac, if you were planning the Apocalypse for a Friday, would you ask someone out on a date for that weekend?” “That’s the only way I’d ask someone out.”
- “Earth to Mars.” I’m embarrassed that it took me five years to get that.
- Norris is going to have a hell of a lawsuit to file when he gets out of custody.
- Holy shit, if Norris put what’s-his-name in the hospital, he should probably have been expelled, or at least sent to the district alternative school. Also, what’s-his-name’s dad sucks.
- I think I’ve seen the actress who plays Miss Stafford somewhere else. To IMDb!
- (Apparently she’s in an episode of As Told By Ginger.)
- Also, Miss Stafford is like the only person at Neptune High who SHOULDN’T be fired out of all this.

the last [directly chronological] part of this storyline: There’s a rat | trouble with the AB | limbo | demands | rescue & consequences | the rat | ladies interlude
/////////
You paused in the shadows for a moment and watched as Cameron exhaled smoke into the night air. Taking the cigarette from behind your ear, nicked from Chibs moments earlier, you stepped into the patch of faded yellow light on the sidewalk behind the building. A nearby street lamp hummed in the background and it flickered like it was low on energy. You knew the feeling.
You brought the cigarette up to your lips before speaking. “Get a light?” you asked. Your voice came out muffled from behind the cigarette, but it still made Cameron startle and whirl to face you. You lifted a corner of your mouth in the imitation of a smile and they relaxed a little.
“Scared the shit out me,” Cameron groused with a hand to their chest still. You attempted a sheepish smile as you stepped a little closer.
“Sorry,” you mumbled. Cameron waved the apology away and pulled out a lighter from a back pocket. The flame flickered twice before fully igniting and you leaned forward and inhaled gently as you stuck the end of your cigarette in the flame. You leaned back against the rough brick wall and slouched before pulling the cigarette from your mouth and letting the curl of smoke vanish into the air.
“Won’t Sonny say something?” Cameron asked on their last drag. They exhaled haphazardly, no elegance in the large plume of smoke coming from their mouth, and stubbed the butt out on the wall before letting it dangle loosely in their fingers.
“He’ll understand,” you replied around another delicate exhale of your own. You tapped the ash from the end of the cigarette and settled more into your slouch.
Cameron gave you a knowing look and their eyes skittered to your left hand before looking away and then landing back on your face. You flexed your fingers absently. Your remaining fingers. With your middle finger you spun your engagement ring a from side to side.
“I’m sorry about—” Cameron gestured towards you. “I’m sorry I didn’t come visit you while you were at home.”
You inhaled again from the cigarette, looking out in the distance instead of looking directly in Cameron’s face. “I’m still at home,” you replied with an edge of bitterness. “Will be a while yet until I heal completely and am able to get back to work. Just had to get out today. I was going stir crazy.” You exhaled through your nose this time and tapped the ash from your cigarette again. “I understand, though. It’s not exactly something Hallmark makes a card for.” You laughed ruefully and Cameron gave you a pained smile.
“Still, I’m sorry I didn’t come over. I should have at least dropped by with some cookies or something,” Cameron replied with a scratch of the back of their neck. They scuffed the toe of a worn in Converse against the sidewalk as you looked on. “Just…had a lot on my mind.”
“Right,” you replied. “The ATF raid. I heard about that. How are you?”
“I’m fine. I’m fine,” Cameron was quick to reply. “Just shaken up a little.”
You brought the cigarette to your lips again. “I promise it’s usually not so…eventful…around here.”
“Yeah, well…” Cameron let the sentence trail. Straightening up they turned to look at you and you looked up into their face as they took a few steps past you back towards the front of the parlor. “I better get back. Enjoy the rest of your smoke. I won’t tell Sonny you’re out here.” The last part was said with a wisp of a conspiratorial smile and you allowed a smile to ghost your lips before turning back to face the night in front of you. A breeze curled around the side of the building and made the telephone poles cast swinging lines onto the ground by your feet.
You let Cameron get a few more steps away as you exhaled smoke from between your lips. “I know it’s you,” you said clearly. From the corner of your eye you saw Cameron freeze in place. Their back was to you so their face gave nothing away for a moment.
Cameron half turned and when you met their eye there was a carefully confused expression on their face. “You know what is me?”
“I know it’s you,” you repeated. “You’re working with ATF. You’re an informant—a rat.”
Cameron shook their head and turned fully. You allowed yourself to continue slouching against the brick wall, even though the roughness of the concrete was starting to dig into your back. “Why would you—”
“I know, Cameron. Okay? I know. Spare the act,” you said harshly. You finished your cigarette and stubbed it out against the wall roughly. “You’re the only one who knew about Nick and Sonny being here in the middle of the day. ATF, Noah, didn’t even know anything. Not much, anyway, which eliminated anyone close to the club. Even Veronica would have more intel for them. It had to be you.”
Cameron continued to shake their head and you growled in frustration. They fumbled for their phone and you rolled your eyes with a huff. “Don’t bother,” you interrupted. “I removed the bug. Replaced it with one of my own.” Cameron’s face was disbelieving, so you continued. “There’s one in your car, one in the office, in your apartment…you’re low on dish soap, by the way,” you added casually.
“Does Sonny know?” Cameron asked in a shaky voice.
“If Sonny knew, we wouldn’t be talking,” you replied with a stony expression. “He knows that I suspect someone. But he’s got a lot on his mind. As does Nick. Sonny doesn’t know it’s you—yet. The way I see it, you have a decision. Become a double ‘agent’ and work for us. Or…” you let your voice trail off.
“Or?” Cameron pressed. Even under the dim street light you could see that they’d gone pale. You responded with a weighted look and a single lifted eyebrow. “Jesus! It’s not that simple. You don’t understand. I made a—”
“Deal,” you finished. “I know. I dug deeper for your records; finally found the real one. I know your legal name, I know where you’re from, I know that you were in a federal prison for shooting a federal agent, who lived because you either weren’t trying to kill them or you’re a terrible shot. That, of course, was after the grand theft auto and armed robbery. But more importantly, Cameron, or whatever your name is, I know that we gave you a family and you repay us by almost getting my future husband locked up.” You paused for a breath. “I know—everything. You have eighteen hours to make your decision and then I’m telling Sonny.”
You pulled your phone out of your pocket and pushed stop on the recording app. With a few more clicks you had scheduled it to be e-mailed to Sonny in exactly eighteen hours. You couldn’t take any chances and your fingers itched towards the gun in the back of your waistband. You resisted the urge to grab it and you watched Cameron for a long moment before pushing off the wall and brushing by them.

EXCLUSIVE: Why Michael Shannon Feels Lucky to Be Hollywood’s Most Reliable Supporting Actor
Michael Shannon can easily be described as Hollywood’s secret weapon. He’s a reliable working actor whose versatility onscreen has seen him emerge from Michael Bay’s Pearl Harbor to appear opposite Eminem in 8 Mile, earn an Oscar nomination in Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet’s highly anticipated onscreen reunion Revolutionary Road and walk away unscathed from Man of Steel, in which he played the critically panned blockbuster’s main baddie, General Zod. He’s repeatedly worked with directors that include Jeff Nichols, Liza Johnson, Michael Bay, Siofra Campbell and Werner Herzog.
In fact, Vulture even gave him that title in 2016 when he was promoting the back-to-back releases of Nocturnal Animals, which earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting actor, and Loving, the latter of which most fans probably didn’t even realize he was in until the actor suddenly appeared onscreen as a photographer who captures the story of Richard (Joel Edgerton) and Mildred (Ruth Negga) Loving for Life magazine.
Salt and Fire, Shannon’s latest film in theaters on April 7 and on demand April 4, is a thriller that sees him reunited with Herzog for the third time following Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans and My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done? And as with the latter, the actor found himself in South America -- this time in the salt flats of Bolivia -- playing the CEO of a company held responsible for an eco-disaster who captures two ecologists (Veronica Ferres and Gael Garcia Bernal). The film, which deals with issues of climate change, is being released at a time when Donald Trump, a real estate mogul-turned-reality star, is president and has made it a priority to undo President Barack Obama’s climate legacy. “I do believe we’re destroying the world. Particularly right now; we just named a man who doesn’t believe in climate change as the leader of the Environmental Protection Agency,” Shannon tells ET, referring to Scott Pruitt.
“What I also appreciate about this movie is that it can address those issues, but not in a pedantic way,” Shannon says, preferring to be in Herzog’s bizarrely compelling narrative over a film about Congress. “That would be boring as sh*t. [Salt and Fire] is a nice way to reference some things that are going on around the world but also have some imagination.”
Aside from the story, Shannon found the decision to work with the prolific filmmaker to be a no-brainer. “I will do anything for Werner,” the actor says. “As far as I’m concerned, he’s a living legend. I’m lucky enough to spend time with him.”
And the adoration extends both ways. In an interview with Marc Maron, Herzog proclaimed Shannon to be the best actor of his generation. “There’s no one like him. I love the man,” he said, adding that the actor’s charisma “comes from somewhere else and we cannot even name it.”
In fact, that kind of appreciation from directors is not rare when it comes to the actor. Tom Ford has compared him to Gary Cooper, and writer Tracy Letts, who has written two plays starring the actor, told Vulture that Shannon has a “mercurial quality that makes people want to see what happens next.” And when it comes to Nichols, who has directed the actor five times, he knows when Shannon is a perfect fit. “I’m a big believer in having the right person for the right part,” Nichols told Variety. “I’m not shoe-horning Mike Shannon into all of these roles. I’ve been very specific about the parts I’ve asked him to play.”
In some ways, Shannon has developed a reputation that supersedes him. It could easily inflate one’s ego, but the actor doesn’t seem to indulge it. “Lucky me, you know? Jesus -- a lot of it is about minding your Ps and Qs. I see some people that have talent and something to offer but they get in their own f**king way sometimes,” he says, explaining that it’s simply a matter of mutual respect. “There are people I really respect. I respect how they work and their reasons for making movies.”
MORE: Michael Shannon Happy to See 'Nocturnal Animals' Recognized by the Oscars
Shannon’s role on set, he says, is to be a service to the filmmakers. “If I think what they're doing is worth a sh*t, I'm there to help, you know? Sometimes, you can get actors who are not about helping. It's about them. That's a turnoff.”
That lack of ego -- he had no belief he’d win Best Supporting Actor over Moonlight’s Mahershala Ali at the 2017 Oscars -- is probably also why the actor has no problem stepping into smaller roles, often coming in for a couple of days to play a part like he did for both Nocturnal Animals and Loving and, in some ways, Salt and Fire, which was shot in fewer than 20 days. “I don’t really mind it,” Shannon says of becoming something of the ultimate supporting player, for which he has earned two Academy Award nominations and a Golden Globe nod. “The smaller the part, the quicker I get home to my kids. That's the way I look at it. I'm more nervous about taking the big job and being away for a long time.”
And being away from his family, which includes longtime partner Kate Arrington and their two daughters, seems to be his only major deterrent from work. “The responsibility that holds the most significance in my life is being a father,” Shannon says. “So, honestly, lots of those moments don’t happen on set. They happen in those brief periods where I actually get to go home and take the kids to school, pick them up, cook them dinner and put them to bed.”

While he’s certainly been on longer shoots and led several films, his longest commitment to one project was playing Nelson Van Alden on HBO’s Boardwalk Empire. “I'm not going to lie, when Boardwalk was over, I was kind of relieved. I was grateful for the opportunity, but spending five years on something -- that was about as much as I would want to do,” he says.
Since the show ended in 2014, Shannon has retreated back to film and the Broadway stage, earning a 2016 Tony nomination for Long Day's Journey Into Night. Late last year, it was announced that Shannon is set to return to TV on the ensemble miniseries Waco, about the 51-day standoff in 1993 between the ATF, the FBI and David Koresh’s spiritual sect the Branch Davidians, which eventually led to a raid and fire that killed 76 people.
“I like to change it up and do different stuff,” Shannon says, as if his four new films -- State Like Sleep, Pottersville, The Shape of Water and The Current War -- slated for release over the next 12 months weren’t evidence enough. “I certainly don't want to get locked down on a show for years and years and years, even though I know it can be lucrative.”
