The Shape Of Darkness was the perfect and most atmospheric book to be reading in a cosy, mysterious cottage in Cornwall. In addition to this, I was also buddy reading it with one of my favourite people on Instagram, @emmasbookishcorner so that made me even happier. ⁣ ⁣ This is the story of a woman called Agnes, a struggling silhouette artist who is trying to keep her business afloat in Victorian times and take care of her elderly mother and young nephew after the loss of her sister. A strange pattern begins to emerge after Agnes clients succumb to death one after the other. Agnes seeks help from Pearl, a child spirit medium to try and get in touch with the deceased clients and figure out what has happened to them. However, Agnes might be opening the door to a lot more than the dead. ⁣ ⁣ I’ve had an interesting relationship with Laura Purcell’s books so far. I read Bone China a little while ago and whilst I enjoyed parts of it, it didn’t blow me away. Luckily I felt considerably more positive about this novel. It had everything you could want from a mystery/suspense narrative including the sinister atmosphere I alluded to earlier. As a bonus, it also had terrific character development, particularly with the character of Agnes and it definitely kept me guessing until the very last page. ⁣ ⁣ The Shape Of Darkness is a real page turner in every sense of the word and I thoroughly enjoyed every moment I spent both reading it and chatting with Emma about it - it certainly gave us a lot to discuss! I’m now eager to go back and read both The Silent Companions and The Corset whilst I patiently wait for whatever Laura Purcell writes next!⁣ ⁣ Four sinister stars 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 ⁣ ⁣ #bookstagram #bookrecommendations #fourstarreviews #fourstarreads #theshapeofdarkness #laurapurcell #historicalfiction #victorianfiction #bookstagrammer #bookreview #mysteryandsuspense #bookstoreadonarainyday #atmosphericreads https://www.instagram.com/p/CSZyZLGrykN/?utm_medium=tumblr

Gorgeous book mail I received today Small Angels By Lauren Owen due for release in 2nd August. How stunning is that cover? Thank you so my to @HeadlineBooks @pioneerso @clairemaxwell for this ARC I can’t wait to read this. When Chloe turns the key to Small Angels, the church nestled at the edge of Mockbeggar Woods where she is to be married, she is braced for cobwebs and dust. What she doesn’t expect are the villagers’ concerned faces, her fiancé’s remoteness, or the nagging voice in her head that whispers to her of fears she didn’t even know she had. Something in the woods is beginning to stir, to creep closer to the sleeping houses. Something that should have been banished long ago. Whatever it is, it’s getting stronger, and pretending it’s not there won’t keep the wedding, or the village - or Chloe - safe. How good does this sound? I can’t wait to get stuck into this. #SmallAngels @HeadlineBooks @pioneerso @clairemaxwell #bookstagram #readersofinstagram #readers #books #atmosphericreads https://www.instagram.com/p/Cc-PpI8L9aI/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

These Silent Woods is the buzzy book from Kimi Cunningham Grant. “Cooper has been living off the grid for eight years with his young daughter, Finch. Their remote cabin lies deep in the Northern Appalachians. Cooper’s friend, Jake, fails to show with supplies. Now Cooper must risk the tenuous safety of the cove…and hope a simple supply run doesn’t expose them.” This is definitely an atmospheric read. Grant does a great job putting the reader in the woods with a constant edge of fear. We get Cooper’s back story a little at a time and get to see what drove him to hide. There are some Hanna vibes early but Grant makes her own story. Some unexpected visitors cause some extreme anxiety and Cooper has to make some tough decisions. I liked the ending. What’s not to like about a remote cabin full of books. Good one from KC Grant. #thesesilenthills #kimicunninghamgrant #atmosphericreads #cabininthewoods #mountainthriller #appalachianthriller #appalachianfiction #buzzybooks #bookstagram #bookshelves #booknerd #bookhoarder #bookworm #sodacityreads #bookish #bookreview #hardcover #bookcover #bookhaul #literarycrimefiction #goodreads #homelibrary #fiction #domesticthriller #crimefiction #thriller https://www.instagram.com/p/CZRkdAwrR74/?utm_medium=tumblr

“A Caretaker always puts her House first.” ✨💐✨💐✨ The first thing I want to talk about regarding Treason of Thorns by Laura E. Weymouth is how gorgeous this cover is! I love the attention to detail and how vibrant the colours are. I love the mix of life and decay, and I think the use of the wallpaper pattern is incredibly clever. Now, let’s talk about the book. I was really intrigued by the premise of a house having magic, and people titled Caretakers being able to wield that magic, and I have to admit that I was not disappointed. I enjoyed learning about the history of these Great Houses and finding out about their magic and the way it can be used. I think the characters of Violet and Wyn were fantastically done, and I loved their friendship and relationship to each other. The history they had with each other and the House was fascinating and extremely well written. I was pleased with how the villains in this story were portrayed. They felt very realistic, and it wasn’t overdone. They added just the right amount of tension and I was really glad when they were defeated. I personally think that this was a great October read - it just had this slightly creepy vibe to it, and it had just the right amount of darkness added to it. It wasn’t scary in any way, but not all October reads have to be! I really enjoyed my time with these characters, in this setting. ✨💐✨💐✨ Treason of Thorns is book 177 for the year. #bookstragram #books #booksofinstagram #booklover #bookphoto #reading #aussieswhoread #avidreader #booklover #aussiereader #bookdragon #reader #readersofig #booksofig #bookcommunity #bookish #bibliophile #readersofinstagram #bookstagrammer #booklife #bookaddict #girlswhoread #readinggoals2019 #bookquote #treasonofthorns #lauraeweymouth #gorgeouscovers #greatoctoberread #atmosphericreads #flatlay https://www.instagram.com/p/B4C0GNBgjqw/?igshid=1s9yop5rlbyts

𝕋𝕠𝕡 𝕠𝕗 𝕥𝕙𝕖 𝕋𝔹ℝ ℙ𝕚𝕝𝕖 QOTD: Have you read the entire corpus of any author's work? If you enjoy a new release from an author will you go back and read their backlist? AOTD: The Last Harvest is the only book by @kim2legit2quit that I have not read and it feels like a travesty. I honestly don't know what is keeping me from reading this book! ℕ𝕖𝕨 𝕥𝕠 𝕥𝕙𝕖 𝕊𝕥𝕒𝕔𝕜𝕤 Pine by @francinephoto is definitely at the top of my TBR for the spooky season. It's a quiet horror novel and the cover just screams Fall! What Fall books are you picking up this season? SYNOPSIS They are driving home from the search party when they see her. The trees are coarse and tall in the winter light, standing like men. Lauren and her father Niall live alone in the Highlands, in a small village surrounded by pine forest. When a woman stumbles out onto the road one Halloween night, Niall drives her back to their house in his pickup. In the morning, she's gone. In a community where daughters rebel, men quietly rage, and drinking is a means of forgetting, mysteries like these are not out of the ordinary. The trapper found hanging with the dead animals for two weeks. Locked doors and stone circles. The disappearance of Lauren's mother a decade ago. Lauren looks for answers in her tarot cards, hoping she might one day be able to read her father's turbulent mind. Neighbours know more than they let on, but when local teenager Ann-Marie goes missing it's no longer clear who she can trust. #bookstagram #fallreading #fallvibes🍁 #francinetoon #atmosphericreads #horrornerd #horrorstories #scarystories #bookishalgor #bookishalgorithm https://www.instagram.com/p/CFkXK7fA3Yh/?igshid=6pkoixn3zt54

𝕋𝕠𝕡 𝕠𝕗 𝕥𝕙𝕖 𝕋𝔹ℝ ℙ𝕚𝕝𝕖 I've had The Honey Farm by @harrietalida on my TBR since it came out. With lyrical prose and creeping dread this literary psychological thriller is the perfect Fall read. Have you read this beautiful, atmospheric novel? Synopsis Lily King meets Patricia Highsmith in this slyly seductive debut set on an eerily beautiful farm teeming with secrets. The drought has discontented the bees. Soil dries into sand; honeycomb stiffens into wax. But Cynthia knows how to breathe life back into her farm: offer it as an artists’ colony with free room, board, and “life experience” in exchange for backbreaking labor. Silvia, a wide-eyed graduate and would-be poet, and Ibrahim, a painter distracted by constant inspiration, are drawn to Cynthia’s offer, and soon, to each other. But something lies beneath the surface. The Edenic farm is plagued by events that strike Silvia as ominous: taps run red, scalps itch with lice, frogs swarm the pond. One by one, the other residents leave. As summer tenses into autumn, Cynthia’s shadowed past is revealed and Silvia becomes increasingly paralyzed by doubt. Building to a shocking conclusion, The Honey Farm announces the arrival of a bold new voice and offers a thrilling portrait of creation and possession in the natural world. #tbr #tbrpile #toberead #literarythriller #atmosphericreads #fallreading #bookstack #bookstagram #bookishalgor #bookishalgorithm https://www.instagram.com/p/CEw68PYAYVG/?igshid=17ii7mmtvxzkw
