Last time on this blog, I made an ATTINY85 flash an LED
This time I made it turn on two different LED’s with a simple push of a button! (Warning; video has pulsing LED’s)
[VIDEO ID: a breadboard with a PDIP8 ATTINY85 microcontroller on it. There is a button next to it, and two LED'S connecting away from it; A yellow and a green. When the video starts, the yellow turns on, but every time a white human finger pushes and holds the switch, the yellow turns off and the green turns on. END ID]
This program will turn one LED on, but if you push the button it will turn it off and activate the other LED. The LED’s will alternate who’s on and off, and this is directly controlled by the tact switch
This one took a bit to code because I forgot how computers count!! And I knew better too!! I had all the bytes coded for 1,2,3,4 counting when computers count as 0,1,2,3. Very embarrassing 😔 Alas, here’s the assembly code I made for it :)
My next step is to make it count two pulses based on a toggled input. While one switch is pushed, count the other switch to see how many pushes it has before the first switch is released. Then, once it gets the count, flash an LED the same number of times.

Part 2! We have been working a lot with attiny816 and attiny1616 chips (https://www.adafruit.com/search?q=attiny) lately, as for our seesaw boards. And we're often needing to program them with a CP2102-based breakout (https://www.adafruit.com/product/5335) with a 4.7K resistor soldered between the RX and TX pins. But we are hankering for a nicer programmer. One that can select 3V or 5V power and logic? Yesterday, we designed an HV programmer; today, we tore out a few parts for the 12V HV programming pulse and spun this simple 3/5V-only UPDI programming dongle. It's a lot like this adorable open-source hardware design (https://github.com/wagiminator/AVR-Programmer/tree/master/SerialUPDI_Programmer), and it inspired us to make something similar.
Instead of a USB A plug, going with USB C. Instead of the CH340N, we kept the CH340E because we like the 'activity' LED, assuming it works. for power, the classic 3.3V AP2112K LDO is kept… plus the 3/5V selection switch! We added a JST SH 3-pin to connect to a quick wire harness (https://www.adafruit.com/product/5755). It fits nicely on a single-sided PCB.
The new decoding chip sets a record of data transmission energy efficiency, and its power consumption is only 1~10% of that of similar products
A team of scientists led by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has developed a decoder chip. The relevant research results were read out at the ongoing International Solid-state Circuit Conference.
The chip uses the general decoding algorithm developed by MIT before, and can decode any encoded signal. The decoding data is simpler and faster than traditional technology, and the energy consumption is only 1% to 10% of other similar hardware, or the performance is 10 to 100 times higher than other hardware. It can be widely used in the fields of virtual reality and 5G network that are demanding on power consumption.
Muriel M é standard, professor of software science and engineering at NEC and professor of electrical engineering and computer science, said, "This is the first time someone has broken through the decoding threshold of 1 pJ per bit. This is roughly the same as the energy you need to transmit 1 bit in the system. This is a significant symbolic threshold, but it also changes the balance of the receiver. From the perspective of energy, this may be the most urgent part - we can transfer it from the decoder to other parts".
In addition to M é standard, the co-authors of this paper also include Arslan Riaz, a graduate student of Boston University, Rabia Tugce Yazicigil, an assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering of Boston University, Ken R. Duffy, then director of the Hamilton Institute of Menus University and now professor of Northeastern University, and other scholars from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Boston University and Menus University.
IT Home is a simple science popularization. The common data is transmitted in the form of bits (0 or 1), and the sender needs to encode the data and add error correction code at the end of the data. The error correction code mentioned here is also a redundant string composed of 0 and 1, which can be regarded as the information required for hash verification. This string of information is usually stored in a specific cipher book, and the decoding algorithm of the receiver is a verification scheme designed for this special cipher. It will retrieve the original information that may have been confused through a specific cipher book and hash structure. Generally, each algorithm is based on a specific code, and most algorithms require special hardware, so a device needs many chips to decode different data.
Researchers have previously demonstrated a general decoding algorithm that can crack any code - GRAND (Guess Random Additive Noise Decoding). Its working principle is to guess the noise that affects the transmission of information, and then directly eliminate the noise from the received data, and then check the remaining content in the cipher book. It will guess a series of noise patterns in the order of possible occurrence.
In fact, the data we receive usually contains reliability information, also known as soft information, which can help the decoder find out which parts are wrong.
It is reported that this new decoding chip is called ORBGRAND (Ordered Reliability Bits GRAND). It can use this soft information to sort data according to the possibility of error in each bit. But in fact, this is not as simple as sorting a single bit. Although the most unreliable part may be the most obvious mistake, the third and fourth unreliable parts together may be as wrong as the seventh part. ORBGRAND uses a new statistical model here, which can sort the bits in this way, because putting multiple bits together may cause errors as well as a single bit.
"If your car breaks down halfway, the soft information may tell you that it is the battery. But if it is not only the battery, for example, the battery and the engine have problems at the same time, it will be very troublesome," said M é standard. This is how a person who can think rationally - although it may be the two parts that break down together, you will start troubleshooting from the most prone place, and then look down, Finally, we can find something that is unlikely to happen.
They believe that this is a more effective method than the traditional decoder. It is reported that the traditional decoder only focuses on the code structure, and it is usually designed for the worst case. "With the traditional decoder, you have to take out the design drawing of the car and check every part. Although you will find the problem eventually, it will take you a long time", explains M é standard.
It is reported that ORBGRAND will stop sorting as soon as a key code is found, which usually happens very quickly. In addition, the chip also adopts parallel logic, which can generate and test multiple noise modes at the same time, so as to find this key code faster.
When they compared this method with other chips, ORBGRAND only consumed 0.76 pJ of energy per bit when decoding with the highest accuracy, breaking the previous performance/energy consumption record. This also means that the energy consumption of ORBGRAND is only one tenth or even one percent of that of other devices.
M é standard said that one of the biggest challenges in developing chips is to reduce energy consumption. ORBGRAND is now so energy-efficient that other processes that researchers did not pay attention to before (such as checking the code words in the cipher book) consume most of their energy.
"Now, the inspection process is like opening a car to see if it works. It is the most difficult part. Therefore, we need to find more effective ways to do this". The team is also exploring ways to change the transmission modulation so that they can use ORBGRAND chip to improve efficiency.

Dr. Ratio: I've read 20 textbooks on romance and human relationships. I followed all the instructions. Why does he still think I hate him?
Dr. Ratio: I likened him to a beautiful bird ("The Attini Peacock boasts one of the universe's more jarring songs, and your choice of attire is somewhat peacock-esque").
Dr. Ratio: I complimented his abilities ("He's not awful to work with").
Dr. Ratio: I playfully implied that he'd look better without his clothes ("I keep telling him the flashy outfits are just making his job harder").
Dr. Ratio: I indulge in his whims ("You could easily squash me with just a pinch"—"If that is your wish, I will do so without a moment's hesitation").
His rubber ducky he was talking to all this time: … (can you please be normal for like 5 minutes and just go and talk to him?)
Guess who just achieved rudimentary digital to analog conversion!
(FREE LARGE FRIES! - lol, ignore the ad on the free oscilloscope app)
I tweaked the code to use timer B instead of A, which I guess is better for driving audio with PWM (also frees up timer A for some higher bit depth PWM to drive the current on the eventual analog components). Totally changed my sample rate, so I'm back to V/Hz instead of V/Oct until I update the python script to generate the exponential values (I suppose I should do a write up at some point instead of just rambling). I also don't have any LPF on the output, so *maybe* the wiggle is from the 62kHz sample rate.
Next steps:
- V/Octave control
- Wavetable lookups (unrelated to DCO)
- DCO analog circuit
- Adapt code for ATtiny (including adapting Arduino syntax into C)
your blog is spectacular! not only is your art style great, but you are providing visibility for bugs people may not know about. even cooler, you can provide visibility for wild bee species! im looking forward to seeing expansions in this universe and the kinds of wasps, bees, and other bugs you'll draw. if you ever run out of inspiration, i have a few bugs that i love that you might wanna draw!
Attini species of ants, who are specialized in farming fungi due to a few very important periods in history. some species have even fully domesticated some fungi species. you may also know these ants as leaf cutter ants.
potato bugs or jerusalem crickets, which have kinda been a part of my childhood! i always loved flipping rocks or looking through leaf litter and finding these guys. they are CHONKY, and i think would make for interesting character designs.
lubber grasshoppers, who are not the best for your garden.. but another childhood favorite of mine. recently, a lubber grasshopper appeared, it was a baby and jumped onto my brother's hand. it was missing a leg, so my brother let it go in our blackberry bush. we saw it just the other day, same grasshopper missing the same leg! it's a lot bigger now and is doing well.
i hope these bugs can inspire you! sorry for the long ask, i just love bugs and your very unique blog. have a lovely day/night.
This is one of the sweetest things I've ever read ! It warms my heart that my passion can bring awareness to more niche insects (and to spread my love for Hymenoptera which is my favorite order of insects)
I have a whole list of bugs I would love to draw and I'll definitely add these to my to-draw insects ! I'm always looking to add variety to my character designs^^ I don't think I've drawn grasshoppers yet either, thank you so much for taking the time to write this to me, it makes me happy to learn about new bugs and get inspired ! I hope you have a lovely day/night as well ( I took a peek at your blog and your borzoi mixed media pieces are so so awesome, I love the atmosphere ! )
Hi I saw in a post that you worked with ATTINY85s! I built a silly blinking light up ring a couple years ago using them. Let me know if you need someone to help troubleshoot stuff while working with them.
Yooo!! that’s so cool!! 👀🐲
Little ATTINY on a ring pop :) Love that you reused a ring pop base as well instead of 3D printing a new one; I am a HUGE fan of reusing things ♻️
What did you use to hold the three button cells onto the base? or are you having to hold them for the photo?
Also how did you program yours? Are you using an Arduino with Arduino code, or are you using AVR assembly?
Thanks for sharing btw, I love to see other people do stuff with them :) 💙💜
— No, amico mio.

oh what a glorious sight this is - not only did the good dr ratio actually show up for this little act of live television, but the interview itself had far surpassed his expectations. scrupulous, rigorous, and eloquent as usual, his dear colleague had not disappointed (and perhaps, even, his hand holding a glass of whisky as he'd watched the programme, had stilled upon hearing kinder words than he had ever expected - if there had been a flash of surprise in dusk-struck eyes and the beginning of a dumb-founded smile on his lips, no one would ever be the wiser).
until, of course, the show reaches its conclusion - now, he had not expected dear owlbert to reveal his part in getting ratio before the cameras, but what he had expected even less, had been the doctor's eagerness to find out what had been said about him. oh? smile returns to cheshire lips; before erupting into a frank laugh no one would get to hear. oh dear.
had the famous dr ratio been caught flustered and flushed live on interastral television? aventurine immediately reaches for his phone, and quickly types a couple of messages.
to: ratio 🗿 - "a system of chaos devoid of logic"? doooc, don't make me blush!
to: ratio 🗿- that final segment though ~ you never told me you cared about what i think of you 😔
to: ratio 🗿- great job as usual. please don't kill me and my frontal lobe with a piece of chalk next time we meet ~
Unprompted. Always accepting! | @apocryphis
Eyes follow him off the set, prickling the back of his neck even with the alabaster head settled firmly on his shoulders. Idiot. Idiot. Whether he was cursing himself or that little peacock he couldn't tell (both, truthfully). 'Only Dr. Ratio can succinctly explain my combat style'. Preposterous. As nonsensical as it is, it is not difficult to comprehend in the slightest! Only... as if. And to counter his denial far before it ever even occurred? The shock of being read so easily had been the most rattling thing. Who does that? (No one. He can count the number of people who know him as well as Aventurine apparently does on one hand.) He'd been played. That gambler must have requested him personally (personally, why him? Why not Topaz?) on purpose, to make a mockery of him live on television. He could just imagine the smug grin on the Stoneheart's face.
Three pings in rapid succession from his phone near instantly make him falter in his pace with dread. He was watching the whole time, wasn't he? Bastard... True enough, the three messages were from none other than the man who set him up. A dull ache knots in his shoulder as he subconsciously hunches, glowering at the screen through his headgear.
On Aventurine's end, the typing bubble pops up... and fades. And again. And again. And finally again, the typing longer this time.
[TXT to: Pavo attini] - Don't be stupid. That wasn't a compliment.
[TXT to: Pavo attini] - Furthermore, working with you is enough of a headache as it is; would I risk inviting more chaos into my life by feeding the ego of someone as reckless and ostentatiously flamboyant as yourself, peacock? I would never know peace again. Not to mention -- you never asked whether your opinion mattered to me.
Another pause follows, before more typing pops up.
[TXT to: Pavo attini] - A piece of chalk would be too dignified a death. I will strangle you.
Data shows that OpenAI has employed a large number of former Google and Meta employees
OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has employed a large number of former Google and Meta employees.
According to the data of LeadGenius and Punks&Pinstrepes, many of the company's more than 200 employees are from Alphabet. Data shows that OpenAI currently employs about 59 former Google employees and about 34 former Meta employees. The company also hired several former Apple and Amazon employees.
Greg Larkin, CEO of Punks&Pinstrepes, a Fortune 500 executive network, believes that these data should ring an "alarm bell" for large technology companies.
Larkin, the translator of IT House, said in the report: "The recruitment of OpenAI shows that large technology companies represented by Google have not optimized their investment in employees. Many AI talents have been engaged in secondary product research in innovation laboratories such as Alphabet X. For these talents, they rarely see that their work has a meaningful impact on the company's core products or earnings.".

Had it had been any other day, you might have been able to conjure up a bratty response. Instead, you look up through the tears blurring your vision, lips quivering as you angle your head up for a kiss.
“I see the purple one has a stronger effect on you than the red one from earlier did. Poor thing, you look like you’ll melt right out of my lap if I weren’t holding onto you.” Geb mused, his vines writhing along your skin, pulling and tugging you close to his chest as he angled his head down.
You whimper, a sliver of pink slipping past your parted lips as you lick at his own, successfully enticing him to kiss you.
“More.” You beg as large hands find their home on your waist, caressing and mapping out every curve, tracing every stretch mark, all while stunning ice-colored eyes remain fixed on your face.
“I wonder what would happen if we mixed them. The warmth of the Flame Lily mixing with the stimulant enhancement in the Clivia-”He went off mumbling under his breath, humming as he wrapped his arms around you, idly rubbing your clit in circles as he talked himself through formulas for more nectar combinations.
He was off in his own world, truly and completely, and it made goosebumps rise on your skin to both be doted on, and spoiled, but also to feel like you were just another object in the room as the good doctor‘s fingers pinched and rolled your clit idly.
“Please-”
“Mm, maybe if I increase the dose by a few grams, it’ll last a bit longer, I don’t like how easily the other dose wore off.” He mused, resting his chin on your shoulder. You squirm, clenching on nothing, legs twitching in his vines. He didn’t say a word to you, muttering in English and another language you didn’t understand, sorting through his thoughts.
You open your mouth to whine again, but a gasp of surprise tumbles through instead. His hand had worked its way lower as he distracted himself-and apparently you-with his mutters. Warm, slightly calloused fingers curl over your thigh, massaging for a moment, before working between your lower lips.
You jolt the moment he touches you. It seemed the purple concoction he’d given you minutes ago had left you much more sensitive than you’d expected.
The vines twitch and contrast around you, tightening and keeping your legs spread as those long fingers push into you, and you’re flustered by the way his attention snapped into focus at the whorish moan the action drew from your lips.
“O h~ It seems like I found the perfect mix, did I?” He purred, kissing up the base of your neck and smiling as he worked those fingers in and out of you, scissoring them apart as you arch your back.
You’re almost embarrassed at how wet you are, arching your back and gasping pathetically as he curled his fingers up.
“My, this is wonderful news. I believe I’ve found the perfect balance for this.” His voice rumbles through your head, and it's now that you realize his fingers were coated in the aphrodisiac he’d been muttering out. You shakily glance down, cheeks flushed as the pretty liquid falls to the floor at his feet as you remain held up by the vines, joining droplets of your essence onto the floor.
Your eyes flutter as you clench around his fingers. Goosebumps rise on your skin as he alternated between thrusting his fingers in with deep, near methodical motions, curling and searching for that delightful spot, and quick, off-beat thrusts.
“Geb~ G-geb fuck, yes yes yes nn-” its now you realize you’re drooling, your arms being pulled behind your back by his vines as a slow, deceptively calm smile stretched across his face.
“You can make a mess. We’re only just getting started.” He promised, kissing you and pushing more of the sweet-tasting nectar onto your tongue through it. You feel your body jerk and tighten, kissing him sloppily as you make a mess of his fingers, hand, and the floor.
His eyes slowly drift down to the puddle that’s left behind before he ran his hand over the top of your head, kissing the tears that had fallen from the corner of your eye away.
“Are you still alright, my love?” He rumbled, his gentle voice bouncing around in your head. You nod, body buzzing in delight as you look at him, whining in offense when he pulled those long fingers out of you.
“No-”
“-ah ah.” He quiets you, holding your gaze as he ran his tongue over the mixture of nectar and cum on his fingers.
“Like I said. We’re only j u s t getting started. Catch your breath. I still have many more to try with you.”
okokok... y'ever hear of these things, these ants? they'called Attini ants, it's a tribe of ants, that, it's special because, y'see, they farm. these ants fucking FARM fungus. and that isn't even the extent of it bc like they've been farming for like, 66 MILLION YEARS. sixty-six million years ago these bitches started farming this fungus.
yk those leafcutter ants? the fuckers can't even fucking eat leaves!!!! they feed it to the fungus! ain't it wild! they want to give their fungus only the BEST feed. these ants...
Yk these things have PESTICIDE!? they spray this shit on their fungus to keep PESTS away. what the FUCK!!!!! i lov eit !!!!!!
And these ants.... farming... im gonna drop some bonus... some bonus shit they do.
- They have tool use. they use tools when foraging. fucking tools.
- They build bridges out of their bodies. they team up to make an ant bridge. you mighta seen it.
- They have espionage in their wars
but that isn't even the big thing. the most amazing thing... the part that'll knock your socks of... THE bomb dot com. these ants DOMESTICATED THE FUNGUS. THEY ARTIFICIAL SELECTION ON THEM.!!!!!! THEY DOMESTICATED THE FUCKING WUFUNFIUANSK!!!!!
