The portrayal of mental health in Star Trek
Although some people might deny it, mental health has always been a topic in Star Trek. We have a lot of episodes in “The next generation” and “Deep Space Nine” focusing on these aspects. And “Discovery” and “Picard” continue in this way. Various different types of mental health problems or mental health related aspects are covered. Some of them will be mentioned in this essay.
1. Anxiety
There are different types of anxiety disorders depicted in Star Trek. On one hand we have phobias. One example is Garak’s claustrophobia in “Deep Space Nine”. Although having been a member of the Obsidian Order and being a spy Garak suffers from extreme claustrophobia. This phobia developed from childhood experiences and has still a strong effect on his life as an adult.
Another phobia would probably be Lt. Reginald Barclays anxiety towards other people in “The Next Generation”. His behavior has strong similarities with social phobia. Barclay has very strong difficulties interacting with other crew members due to various insecurities.
But in addition to phobias we also have anxiety in general. A good example would be Su’Kal, who triggered the burn in “Discovery” out of fear. His reaction to a frightening event threw the whole universe into an unstable and chaotic state, destroying the federation as it was known before. And his ongoing fear, also his fear of changes, put a danger on some of Discovery’s crew members, while examine the source of the burn.
2. Depression
A huge focus on “Picard” season 2 is put depressions. Renée Picard, an ancestor of Jean-Luc Picard suffers from depressions and nearly changes the course of history because of them, until Picard is able to intervene. Also Picard’s own mother suffered from severe depressions. It led her to endanger her son, as she grew more and more restless and kind of delusional, and even resulted in her death by suicide.
3. Trauma
A lot of characters on Star Trek go through very tough and traumatic situations. One of these situations is certainly Jean-Luc Picard’s assimilation through the borg. Although the assimilation is reversed and his augmentations are removed Picard still has to recover from those traumatic events.
Another example is Nog in "Deep Space Nine". After being injured on a mission during the Dominion war and losing one of his legs, Nog battles insomnia and posttraumatic stress. He experiences physical symptoms which in reality result from his mental state. It takes a while, but eventually he manages to overcome his struggles.
4. Grief
Grief is a very strong topic in the 4th season of "Discovery". Cleveland Booker griefs the loss not only of his family but also of his whole home planet. This grief leads him to make some questionable yet somewhat understandable decisions.
Grief is also shown in the other shows of the Star Trek franchise. In "Deep Space Nine" we have the deaths of Jadzia Dax and Tora Ziyal. While the former of the two leads mainly to a grieving yet functioning crew and Worf being very distanced towards the Dax’s new host Ezri, the death of Gul Dukat’s daughter plays a huge role in the thread towards the existing system. Dukat, obviously gone mad at the death of his daughter, nearly manages to throw the universe into chaos.
And also in "TNG" we have lots of episodes dealing with grief. Like for example the death of Deanna Troi’s “son”, an alien lifeform that was born after infiltrating her body, or Data’s daughter Lal, an android constructed by Data, according to his own blueprints.
5. Loss
Loss plays a huge part in the 2 and 3 season of “Discovery”. Be it the temporary “loss” of Hugh Culber and the following separation of him and his partner in season 2 or the crew’s loss of their former lives and consequently their families and friends due to their jump into the future. Both situations leave the crew dealing with a huge amount of feelings and emotions, be it sadness or simply anger, before they are addressed adequately in season 4.
Another “loss” portrayed in Star Trek is certainly the separation of Seven of Nine from the borg collective in “Voyager”. Although the separation from the collective is an act that should be regarded positive in general, it means a huge change for Seven and leaves her in a vulnerable and confused state. She has to learn how to be an individual again after being connected with a multitude of minds over the years.
6. Guilt
Different variations of guilt are portrayed throughout the different shows and seasons of Star Trek. Even if we would just focus on "Discovery", we have various forms. We have Michael Burnham, who blames herself for not being able to save her first captain, Philippa Georgiou from the attack of the Klingons.
We have Ruon Tarka, who, although being forgiven, blames himself for betraying his friend Oros to the emerald chain and for not being able his promise he gave Oros when they parted ways.
On the other hand we also have cases of survivors guilt. First Cleveland Booker, who in addition of the grief of losing his family, also blamed himself for not realizing the threat in advance and being the only one to survive. And there is also Hugh Culber, who can’t grasp why he is still alive although having been killed by Ash Tyler, while others, like books family, aren’t that fortunate. In Booker’s and Tarka’s case their combined guilt leads to some drastic and very questionable actions.
Another important portrayal of guilt is shown in the second series of “Picard”. Jean Luc Picard is confronted with the memories of his mother’s suicide. It becomes clear, that over the years he had repressed the memories of her death, because he felt responsible as one of his actions might have enabled her death.
There are a lot more episodes of Star Trek who deal with mental health. What becomes very clear though is that although various crewmembers suffer from mental health issues, they are still viewed as valuable members of the crew. Officers that are valued for their knowledge, that are trusted with important tasks or even officers others look up to. They are good friends to others or reliable people. They are well respected and appreciated.
For those of us who have first hand experience in that area (be it because we are suffering from a mental health issue ourselves or because we have friends or family members struggling with one) the topic is even more important. The way it is pictured in Star Trek gives us hope that one day it will be possible to talk about mental health as open as about other diseases in real life. That it will be normal to talk about one’s depression, personality disorder or anxiety disorder without shame, just like one would talk about one’s high blood pressure or diabetes. That a person’s OCD, schizophrenia or Tourette’s syndrome isn’t viewed as a matter to make fun of, just as nobody would joke about another person sitting in a wheelchair after an accident.
If this would come true we would really live in a better future.
