Carewyn Cromwell and Aurelie Dumont, pretty please?

How Carewyn Feels About Aurelie:

When Carewyn first collided with Aurelie when she came to visit Penny at Hogwarts, she was immediately sus of Aurelie's intentions. She pretty quickly caught on to the fact that Aurelie was lying to Penny about considering enrolling at Hogwarts, and although she acted polite in front of Penny, Carewyn pretty quickly decided she was going to figure out what the Beauxbatons student was up to. Once she determined that Aurelie was not interested in the Cursed Vaults and Aurelie came clean about her real reasons for coming to Hogwarts, Carewyn relaxed a bit, and even agreed to help her up to a point, provided that Aurelie stop leading Penny on with the thought of her transferring to Hogwarts. By the time Aurelie left, the two girls had mended fences enough that Aurelie sent Carewyn a Beauxbatons uniform through owl post the following week. Carewyn then continued to hear about Aurelie through Penny and through the occasional letter from Aurelie herself -- Carewyn even at one point reached out to Aurelie post-Hogwarts so as to put her in contact with her brother Jacob, when he started dipping his toe into some alchemical research.

How Aurelie Feels About Carewyn:

Aurelie had heard a LOT about Carewyn from Penny, largely about how kind and brave she was. What she had not expected was for Carewyn to be so insightful and smart, and although at first, it kind of put Aurelie on edge since she had something to hide, it ended up being the thing Aurelie appreciates most about Carewyn. Penny's letters had given her a rather Gryffindor-esque image of Carewyn, one of a heroic paragon who can't stand to watch other people being hurt, but Carewyn also is someone who's always thinking, and never shallowly. For a rather intellectual sort like Aurelie, that was actually rather refreshing, so she really enjoyed working with Carewyn, once the Slytherin had agreed to help her research what Nicholas Flamel could've hidden at Hogwarts. It's also a trait Aurelie ended up liking even more in Carewyn's older brother Jacob, upon them first exchanging letters -- Jacob's genius intellect and analytical thought patterns were a lot of fun to engage with.

Penpal anon- this time it’s about Aurelie: you mentioned her writing about her brother and now I’m picturing her and the mc talking about their brothers and by extension what they think about them. In year five, there could be a letter from Aurelie about how Penny stopped writing to her all of a sudden and is anything wrong?? And in the scene where Penny brews that one potion the mc could mention that Aurelie asked about her.

That would be pretty neat. Especially since I envision this whole pen-pal idea as being not unlike the Friend Leveling minigames, and I do think that functionally, it would have to be. Or at least, that’s what Jam City would wind up doing. Hell, just imagine for a second if, rather than give us that weird and stupid studying thing, they had MC go to the Library to write a letter to their penpal? I’m not sure how it would work exactly, it probably wouldn’t have the character sprite show up in person. Maybe have someone turn up to read the letter aloud and help MC write the response? We all know it would probably be Penny, but one idea that I think is pretty cool would be if it was a different character for every penpal. For Aurelie, it could be Penny! Reading off fun facts about Aurelie’s brother and listening to MC list off neat facts about Jacob. Plus it would be a good opportunity to work in that whole storyline about Aurelie and Penny!

Yay for our favorite French alchemy student! ^.^ I loved using this song by my favorite band of all time (written in reference to the sirens trying to tempt Odysseus in The Odyssey) as inspiration while drawing this girl, who likewise is egged on by a desire for untapped secret knowledge.

Aurelie's tail is inspired by a neon blue guppy, specifically one with a veil tail. There are many, many different varieties of guppy, but they're generally known as rather sociable, adaptable fish with a marked ability to learn, with some even being able to count!
