Chemical Hearts (2020)

I will happily point any teenager towards Chemical Hearts. It captures the overabundance of emotions you feel during high school. If you’ve survived that part of your life, you’ve seen this before, probably better.

Henry Page (Austin Abrams) is an aspiring writer who becomes fascinated by a new student at school. Grace Town (Lili Reinhart) spends all of her time wallowing in her misery and rejects his attention but eventually, she begins warming up to him and revealing what secret has made her the jaded person she is now.

Though Grace walks with a limp and uses a cane, this isn’t another “dying lovers” movie like The Fault in our Stars or 5 Feet Apart. It’s more of a “this enigmatic girl will teach me about life, love and everything in between” movie like Paper Towns or The Sun is Also a Star. What horrible incident made Grace so bitter? Does it have to do with her not wanting to drive? The mystery's not tough to unlock but you won't see everything the movie's got coming and the drama is believable. It’s made way bigger than it should but that’s teenagers for ya. All their emotions are the biggest they’ve ever felt and they're all new. Every love is the love of their life and a life-altering event. Writer/director Richard Tanne (working from the book by Krystal Sutherland) does express these high-school sentiments with a recognizable honesty. It also has the bonus - as many of these new teen-aimed love stories do - of embracing modern sensibilities. One of Henry’s best friends (played by Kara Young) is a lesbian and it’s treated like it’s no big deal. When sex is discussed it’s not with chuckles or drool like it would’ve seen in the ‘90s. The only reason Henry’s parents don’t understand what he's going through is because their hearts were never put the wringer like his is now.

At points, Chemical Hearts is a bit too on-the-nose. Henry’s hobby is to mend broken vases with gold (Kintsugi). It's so obvious even the characters in the movie point it out. Grace’s passion is dark poetry, which also feels like an unnatural choice, even for a young woman who used to write but can no longer find the words. She’s quoting obscure Latin sayings, making nightly pilgrimages, and lamenting the fact that in the end, we’re all just the remnants of dead stars. ... Alright then.

On the upside, the performances are good and the actors fit their parts well. The biggest sin is that, ultimately, Chemical Hearts is just “another one of these”, right down to the ending.

As I've written this review, I've warmed up to Chemical Hearts. It offers its intended audience everything they want. Even things go a little too far, it all fits together like a poem you wanted to give to your crush but were too shy to and later find taped back together by the very person you wrote it for.
