Johann Strauss's "Radetzky March" has long been an audience favourite. The Radetzky March is one of the world's best-known and catchiest tunes. The whole venue is one with twists and turns!

The Vienna New Year's Concert (Neujahrskonzert der Wiener Philharmoniker) is an annual concert of classical music performed by the Vienna Philharmonic on the morning of New Year's Day in Vienna, Austria. The concert occurs at the Musikverein.

Johann Strauss I's most famous piece is probably the 1848 Radetzky March – named after Field Marshal Joseph Radetzky von Radetz, written to commemorate Radetsky's victory at the Battle of Custoza.

When Hitler first came to power, German Jews fled to Western European nations and hoped that the regime would fall. After the Anschluss and Kristllnacht, they began to look overseas. The US accepted 150,000 Jewish refugees between 1938 and 1941, far fewer than it had the capacity for; Great Britain took 70,000 Jewish refugees, plus the 10,000 German Jewish children whom arrived via the Kindertransports, and, in 1939 passed the White Paper, limiting Jewish immigration to Palestine to 15,000 people per year; British Commonwealth nations admitted ~13,000 Jewish refugees; and Latin American Republics changed their policies to effectively bar Jewish emigration after 1938, allowing only ~17,500 Jews into Central and South America. Europe 170 years ago today: Vienna Uprising (29 Oct 1848) https://buff.ly/2SrJ6e0 Having imposed peace on the Sardinians, Austria now turned to crush the revolution in Hungary - even though that country was asking for reforms not independence. The population of Vienna sympathized with the Hungarian cause and flew into revolt, expelling the Habsburg imperial court from the city and forcing Austrian troops to hurry back to besiege their own capital. When Austrian President Franz Jonas visited the Vatican in 1971, Pope Paul VI named Austria “the Island of the Blessed.” He did so to emphasize Austria’s steep recovery. Only twenty-five years had passed since the end of the Second World War, and Austria was already one of the most prosperous European countries.

One might argue that Austria was always a rich country, and during the times of its Habsburg rulers, it certainly was. But after the dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Austria was lost between two worlds—its German heritage and its multi-ethnic nation. As such, it was easy for Nazi Germany to hijack Austria, integrate it in its anti-Semitic scheme, and make it defy the whole Western world. Austria was deeply involved in the atrocities of World War II, but somehow, it managed to rise above it quicker than anyone would expect.

Since its beginning as the Eastern March, through the rise of its ruling Habsburg dynasty, and through many ideological and ethnic wars, Austria managed to maintain its unique personality, although it never really had a strictly defined identity. It is no wonder many scholars like to describe the history of Austria as one without a nation.

In the wake of World War I, Vienna is in a state of massive crisis. Housing is the central issue.
