The Prophecy and the Curse (E, 17k) by Tossukka

Is a story I had the immense pleasure to collaborate on for the 2024 Good Omens Fairy Tale Bang (@fairytalegobang).

It was a dark and stormy night, so Aziraphale didn’t think twice before letting a similarly dark and completely drenched traveler in with no expectations of payment. Genuine acts of kindness like that rarely came easily to those who spent their whole lives in hospitality, but Aziraphale was never considered normal; certainly not by his parents, who had left their newborn at his Godmother Tracy’s inn a quarter century ago. Good thing that the handsome and now only slightly damp stranger — who introduced himself as Crowley — didn’t seem exactly normal either.

Long story short, first impressions were proven false, a friendship was born and then bloomed into something else, and Aziraphale slowly started to understand that sometimes it took a person much more than shedding of their wet coat and a pair of sunglasses — even more than shared meals and drinks, family stories and heated glances — to make their identity truly seen.

There was a vast difference between seeing and knowing though, and only crossing that final boundary could lead to a true Happily Ever After. Before Aziraphale and Crowley found their way back to each other there, on the very first day of the rest of their lives, they had to face their individual families and destinies head-on. And they did it with style.

I enjoyed a lot researching and designing the clothes and the appearances of both Aziraphale and Crowley in 1809. I wanted Aziraphale to actually sport some slightly outdated fashion choiches!

On top of that I also had the chance to draw one of the most important English authors, the one and only Jane Austen, aka the brains behind the 1810 Clerkenwell Diamond Robbery, brandy smuggler, master spy :D Close ups under the cut!

Summary:  

In his work as a firefighter, Dean gets to help people and has once again been chosen to model for the next year’s first responder calendar. Excerpt: 

Dean was fixing the fire engine, enjoying some alone time he didn’t often get during workdays. He was humming a tune, when he heard footsteps approaching him. Expecting to hear Bobby asking about the engine, Dean answered before he heard the question.

“Just figured out where the problem is, Bobby,” he said. “I’ll be right with you!”

He spent a few minutes yanking off a part that looked like it had seen better days. Dean smiled and scrolled from under the engine, holding the broken part in his hand, when he looked up to see a devastatingly handsome man in a full suit standing next to the vehicle.

“Oh, fuck. Sorry for making you wait,” Dean said, putting the broken part down and grabbing a towel to wipe his hands as clean as he could. He was sweaty, covered in engine grease, and wearing an old pair of jeans and a dirty t-shirt. Not the image he wanted to give to a gorgeous guy on the first meeting.

“It’s no problem,” the man said, looking at Dean intensely as he got back on his feet. “I have a meeting with the fire investigation team.”

“Right,” Dean said. “Not to be rude, but I’ve never seen you before. Who did you say you are?”

“I didn’t,” the man said. “Detective Castiel Novak. You wouldn’t have seen me before, because I just switched here.”

“Alright. Give me a moment,” Dean muttered and took out his phone to call Garth. “Hey, is your team expecting visitors? I’ve got a guy here.”

“Yes, I’m waiting for Castiel Novak. Check his badge and send him in,” Garth said brightly.

“Sure thing. Thanks,” Dean said and ended the call. “Could I see your badge first?”

Castiel pulled out his badge and Dean nodded.

“This way then,” Dean said and led Castiel to the office corridor. “Down the hall and you’ll find the fire investigators near the end. There should be a sign.”

“Thank you,” Castiel said. Dean followed him with his eyes until he disappeared into the room.

To show Castiel the realities of his work, Dean invites Castiel to join him on a chase for a few weeks. Castiel is intrigued, and unexpectedly, his employer agrees to let him count it as field work. After their disastrous first meeting, Castiel expects to share a civil but distant working relationship with Dean. And yet, in the volatile atmosphere of the tornado season, both the storms and Castiel’s attraction to Dean grow more intense day by day.

“Now, now, storm chasers are an important part of the weather industry. You know that as well as I do, Castiel,” a man said speaking in a British accent. “Personally I just don’t think the people who voluntarily drive themselves in the middle of what is often hell on Earth can be in their right minds. They end up blocking the roads and making an already dangerous situation even more so,” the one who had been called Castiel said. Dean frowned. “But they do good too. Collect data, confirm warnings, save lives.” “I’m only saying I believe they must have some self-destructive tendencies, that is all.” Dean couldn’t listen more without interrupting. “Excuse me?” he said and pushed his way to the two men. “Sorry for pushing my nose where it doesn’t belong, but I couldn’t help overhearing the discussion.” The dark-haired man’s bright blue eyes widened a little as he saw Dean. There was a hint of recognition in them, and Dean suspected the man already knew who he was. “Heh, my name is Dean Winchester. Well, I work as a storm chaser among other things. Your discussion sounded interesting,” Dean introduced himself. “Oh-ho! There we go, Cassie. You can talk to a professional about your suspicions,” the British guy said. “Call me Balthazar, Dean. Nice to meet you.” Even in the middle of his annoyance, Dean couldn’t help noticing Castiel was just his type. Except that he was clearly an asshole. Well no, that also had been very much Dean’s type over the years. Shit. “So Cas, you think I like risking my life for cheap thrills then?” Dean asked, not bothering to beat around the bush. Castiel frowned. “Don’t you?” “Oh dude, it’s so much more than that. I can admit there’s an element of thrill being so close to the greatest forces of nature, but just so you know, storm chasers take a lot of cautionary measures to keep themselves safe during chasing,” Dean said. “It’s not just aimlessly driving around like maniacs and blocking roads from other citizens. There’s a lot of science connected to it, and a bit of experience needed to keep yourself and others out of trouble.” “I don’t doubt that, Dean,” Castiel said. “I’m sure you are very good at what you do. But you are putting yourself needlessly in danger.” “I’m not,” Dean said. “Listen, have you ever been storm chasing?” “No.” “Okay then,” Dean said. “How about this? Do you want to join me for the peak of the Southern Plains tornado season? Let’s say May? Two weeks, full month, whatever works for you. Get a taste of the cheap thrills.” “I…” Cas hesitated. “I don’t think I can take that much time off work.” “I’ll give you some time to consider,” Dean said and pulled out his business card. His solution had been to touch Dean where the Empty couldn’t reach either of them.

Man... I feel a little bad for Cas because I decided to draw the scene where he's driven away but had to pull over to start crying. There are so many beautiful scenes in this story, yet for some reason this was the scene that jumped out to me the most! I told Tossukka about it, and this is what she had to say about it:

" I tried to capture in my opinion one of the most tragic things about their whole friendship/relationship which is Dean having fear of rejection, and wanting Cas to stay without him having to ask it, and Cas feeling he is not important to anyone unless he's useful so he always leaves, either to do something useful or sacrificing himself to protect others. The crying in the car is because I think Cas hates leaving just as much as Dean hates being left behind. 🥺 "

My heart got sucker punched in the feels after reading this response and I was HELLA determined to do my best to reflect that response as well as the hurt in the song with my drawing!

For the banner... I think some people may be a little confused by it so let me explain! As I was reading the story, the thought occurred to me of how lonely Cas was feeling throughout. And so my brain, being the angst monster it likes to be at times, thought, "Cas is lonely within their home just like he would have been lonely in the Empty." So that's why it looks like the empty is coming for him! It's not really... it's just symbolic. XD

I want to give my author a super huge shout-out and lots of kudos! She did such a fantastic job with this story with how she wrote the characters and how she takes you on this emotional roller coaster with these two! My heart ached and soared at so many different points while reading and I can't stop recommend it enough!

I'd also like to give a big thanks to the mods who run the DeanCas Bang (Taylor's Version) every year! This is one of the bangs I always look forward to participating in! Thanks for all of your hard work, and thank you especially for the small check-in extension when shiz hit the fan IRL for me.

I think most of the time I've seen it, heavy duty angel lore seems to only really appear in the massive world-building fics where the author is trying to explain why angels are "like that" but lets see what I can find.

Nonspecific timeframe.  They are together and happy but both are still slightly insecure with each other because Cas will always praise Dean’s soul and Dean will praise Cas’ vessel.  They talk it out and Dean is interested in know about Cas’ trueform and in return Dean is worried that Cas won’t be interested in him as he gets older. Congratulations to all of the amazing artists and authors who participated in the ninth round of the Dean/Cas Pinefest!

It was a difficult year for a number of our fandom friends, leading to a couple of last minute schedule changes and pinch-hit assignments that brought our total number of participants to just 25 authors and 24 artists -- but even with those unexpected changes, 26 teams gifted the Dean/Cas fandom an impressive 787,104 words of pine-filled fic, and 83 gorgeous works of art.

As always, the wealth of creative talent we've been blessed with in this fandom has blown us away, and it's especially wonderful to see the love for our favorite hunter and angel going strong after all this time.

Summary:

In academic circles Dean is known as just another Winchester consumed by the idea of the legend of Atlantis. After losing both of his parents and his academic reputation to the obsession, Dean is ready to give up, when one night he and his brother are invited to meet an old friend, Bobby. Bobby gives Dean an old journal with instructions on how to find the lost continent and tells them about an expedition arranged to look for Atlantis and an ancient, long-lost source of energy contained there.

Dean and Sam agree to join the adventure. The journey ahead is long and dangerous, and no one can predict what they will find at their destination or if they ever even manage to get there alive.
