Food & Dining: Avacado Toast Makes its Debut in Tonysville After Public Outcry

Not Wanting to be left in the crumb dust by their more “urban” friends on social media, residents of Tonysville created a petition demanding access to the popular brunch item Avocado Toast. 

Pam Turner, an assistant art teacher at Krazy Kidz Corner, was the mastermind behind the petition after tasting avocado toast for the first time while visiting her sister in Brooklyn last year.

“We were at this little cafe and Nancy ordered avocado toast for us and I was in heaven. I flew back home early because I couldn’t wait to eat this dish at a restaurant in my town.  I started with the fancier restaurants in town that served breakfast like Friendlies and IHOP but they said they couldn’t adjust their menus. After initial frustration I knew I had to take action in a way that would get some real change here in Tonysville. It was just a matter of getting a petition together, convincing friends, family, neighbors and strangers to sign, and then finding a place that would buckle under the immense pressure!”

For those who don’t know, avocado toast is a delicacy (often associated with millennials) which consists of bread that is lightly-to-mediumly toasted and then covered in a conservative amount of smashed avocado and then garnished with whatever the restaurant has lying around. This delicacy has been deemed best to be ordered at a restaurant as it takes a professional’s hand to craft. At anywhere from $5-$15 depending on where you order it, people often make it a special dining experience, taking numerous pictures and posting them to popular social media sites like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. The dish has even gained enough popularity to have a hashtag, #avocadotoast.

Pam’s petition received over 14 signatures in just one month and by the time she had went to every breakfast spot in town (including Krispy Kreme, Starbucks and Denny’s) to find her best victim, she had 26 signatures. 

“I marched right into Dunkin' Donuts and said ‘I don’t care if you are a franchise, these people want this and you are going to give it to us!’ And then I treated myself to a bear claw and a Oreo Coolatta, cause what I did took big kahoonees!”

The manager conceded and agreed to begin serving avocado toast as soon as he could get a shipment of guacamole. It has been two weeks since Pam’s victory and you can see her first #avacadotoast social media post below.
