Delhi Durbar
The Delhi Durbar was a spectacular public event held in India to commemorate the accession of a new British monarch to the title Empress or Emperor of India. Three Delhi Durbars were held: 1877, 1903, and 1911. The event involved military processions, elephants, and magnificent carriages, as well as a host of rulers of the Indian princely states paying homage to the British Crown in recognition of its sovereignty over large parts of the subcontinent.
Queen Victoria (r. 1837-1901) did not attend the 1877 Delhi Durbar in person but was represented by the viceroy. Similarly, in the 1903 durbar, another viceroy represented King Edward VII (r. 1900-1910). The 1911 durbar was the most spectacular of all as King George V (r. 1910-1936) attended the event in person.
The Durbar Tradition
Spectacular gatherings of semi-independent or vassal rulers in order to pay homage to an emperor were a regular feature of the Mughal Empire (1526-1857) in India. These ceremonies were held at the royal court or durbar, and so that name became associated with the public act of homage performed by vassal rulers. In the royal palace in Delhi (today known as the Red Fort), the multitude of subordinate rulers gathered in a great open courtyard festooned with coloured awnings and wall hangings while, in the centre, the Mughal emperor awaited their homage of loyalty. The emperor sat majestically on the Peacock Throne, "a stunning construction of gold and jewels surmounted by a golden arch and topped by two gilded peacocks, birds of allegedly incorruptible flesh which may have symbolised not only the splendour of the Mughals but also their durability" (James, 4). The Mughal durbars not only displayed the emperor's power and his subject's obedience but were also an occasion to hear opinions from experienced rulers, to catch up on events in the far corners of the empire, and to settle any disputes or matters of justice between vassal rulers.
The British took on this double idea of power display and receiving homage from allied rulers. Delhi, the capital of the Mughal Empire in India, seemed a suitable location as it would involve a strong propaganda message "of complete British assumption of the symbolic and real power once held by the Mughal emperors" (Barrow, 126). Calcutta (Kolkata) was the other choice since this had long been the main centre of the East India Company, whose territories the British Crown and government took over in 1858. Calcutta was also made the capital of the British Raj (rule) in India. In 1911, however, Delhi replaced Calcutta in this role. For the durbars, though, Delhi was the choice for all three events. To demonstrate to the Indian rulers just why they were paying homage to the British Crown, the British version of the durbar involved a huge display of the empire's military might.

A rendering of a rooftop terrace installed by the Parisian startup Roofscapes.
Paris When It Sizzles: The City of Light Aims to Get Smart on Heat
With its zinc roofs and minimal tree cover, Paris was not built to handle the new era of extreme heat. Now, like other cities worldwide, it is looking at ways to adapt to rising temperatures — planting rooftop terraces, rethinking its pavements, and greening its boulevards.
In many cities, this urban remodeling project is already underway. In New York City, workers and volunteers have planted over a million trees to add shade and clean the air. In Seville, Spain, city planners are using the technology of ancient underground waterways to provide cooling for the city without depending on air‑conditioning. In Freetown, Sierra Leone, officials are creating urban gardens, improving access to clean water, and erecting plexiglass awnings over outdoor markets. In Los Angeles, public works crews are painting streets white to increase reflectivity. In India, they are experimenting with green roofs, which absorb heat and create space to grow food. But perhaps nowhere in the world do the challenges, as well as the opportunities, loom larger than in Paris, where nearly 80 percent of the buildings have zinc roofs — an affordable, corrosion-resistant and virtually inflammable innovation of the 19th century. But those roofs are, in the 21st century, deadly — heating up to 194 degrees F on a summer day. And because top‑floor garrets were not insulated, that heat is transferred directly into the rooms below.

Hii!! Apologies you got Kidnapped into the fandom.
just wanted to let you know it's really rare to come across another Indian Lgbtq+ being on here and it's sort of......uplifting I guess? To know that you're not really alone in that sense.
I really love your sense of humor, and your posts, keep up the good work!!
Also, congratulations on being mutuals with @neil-gaiman on here.
Anyways, its not much of an ask, moreso an attempt at an appreciation post, but I hope it doesn't get lost in your ask box.
Also you should try Old Monk.
I bet your commentary on that would be hilarious!!
Stay fresh and hydrated!!
Hellooo maggot! Thank you for the apology, most of the fandom is extremely unrepentant for their crimes. A true tragedy. Shakespearian.
Thank you so much, and I'm so happy that you feel happier and seen. It's so easy to feel alone as a queer person in India, isn't it? It's horribly isolating and feeling unsafe all the time is exhausting. Which yeah is the queer experience worldwide too, to a lesser degree or in a different way. But here... it's a whole new level of fucked.
But we aren't alone. Remember that when it gets shitty, yeah? There are so many Indian queer people. I know many myself. There are so many queer Indian maggots, too (hey y'all give this maggot a wave so they know they're not alone!) and it's incredible to see how people come together to shelter under the fandom umbrella.
Especially good omens, though in good omens it is actually an awning to shelter under while it's raining, wet and looking into each other's eyes. Although not vavooming. I think. *Looks around alarmed* Have I missed something are we all vavooming???
Tumblr media
Thank you for tempting me to write more posts with alcohol, the fandom is an amazing influence, 1000/10 job at parenting me. One thing I will say though, every single of you have ensured that I keep drinking water. I went and drank a cup now just for you.
More water so more tears over Crowley!
Take all the love, we're not alone. That's what I love most about good omens. How much I feel seen, not just as a queer person, but as a person.

Felix and Kiseki for the physical description ask?
oh two of my boys!
I'll start with Felix since i have much more text with him. (buckle your seatbelts this might take a hot second)
Starting with two descriptions of him by Nerium in this piece, the latter of which is my personal favourite description of him! (technically he's like 13 or something in this, which is about 10 years younger than he is when the book starts, but shhhh the vibes still match)
... The boy had quite delicate, sharp, features, though they still had a soft look to them. Nerium was guessing he was somewhere in the area of thirteen. His hair was just past chin length, at an awkward length where it was just short enough to not fit properly into a ponytail or other restraint, but just long enough to get in the way, with a swooping half-fringe that draped over the right side of his forehead, almost falling into his eyes. The rich red of his tunic and tidy fit of the black undershirt were both definitely noble clothing, but there was a fairly sizable rip on the tunic’s side that had been sewn up in a distinctively inexperienced manner.
... (In the future, whenever Nerium thought back to this first meeting, this image was always the first that came to mind. Felix, grinning, eyes still sparkling with laughter and evening sun, hair almost golden in the dappled sunlight seeping through the autumn leaves above, one hand still shepherding loose hair out of his eyes and the other resting on his cane again. Something about the picture had always felt ethereal to Nerium, and though he no longer thought of Felix as the boy from a fairy tale, some moments it seemed all too accurate.)
Veering closer into canon, here's how Helen describes Felix when she first meets him. (RIP George, whoever he was)
...she’d moved about two crates by the time she noticed an unfamiliar young man walking across the grass. Frowning, Helen paused halfway through lifting another crate, and squinted at said young man. The first thing that caught her eye was his past-shoulder-length bright copper hair, and the second thing was how easily he was interacting with the various carnival hands he passed. Actually, maybe that should have been the first thing she’d noticed, considering Helen had never seen him before. Helen huffed, rolling her eyes. Good heavens, George, how many times do people have to tell you to pay attention to who’s going backstage? Despite the fact that the ginger was definitely not a carnival member, he seemed entirely at home in the bustle of the backstage area, ducking around two brothers as they carried a heap of cables across the grass with a wink, neatly avoiding getting run over by Rosie (one of Helen’s fellow dancers, who as usual appeared to be late for something) and waving at her as she receded into the chaos. Helen watched a moment longer, then decided he wasn’t her problem (that would be George’s problem when India found out he’d let another visitor sneak backstage, to be specific).
And last but not least, here's Scarlet's description of Felix when she first meets him, this one's getting very close to where canon starts.
Scarlet cast a glance at him out of the corner of her eye, curious. They were about the same height, she realized with some surprise. Probably a lot closer than it actually looked- casting a glance down at Monarch’s feet- considering he appeared to be wearing platform boots. Aside from said boots, Monarch was dressed simply in a dark blue tunic, knee-length loose black coat and black gloves with several rings. He had dark hair just past shoulder length, tied back in a ponytail, and… to Scarlet’s surprise, a pale turquoise courting necklace poking out from his tunic’s neck. “You’re surprisingly nice.” Scarlet observed. “Also kinda short. You’re like, the same height as me.” “Thank you,” Monarch replied, “also, rude. True, but rude.” They continued walking for a moment, breeze ruffling the end of Monarch’s coat and snapping at the various awnings. Monarch walked quite softly, Scarlet noted, the only sound he was making was the click of his cane on the cobbles.
Canonically Felix is not exactly the same height as Scarlet; she's five-six/167 and he's five-seven/170, but he's still definitely short for a man in Solace. (average height is around five-ten/177)
other details that aren't in text or I didn't include here:
Shannon calls Felix the sun pretty often, make of that what you will.
I call Felix ethereal pretty often, make of that what you will as well.
Felix is described as moving in a feline way quite often, and I personally write him with the thought in mind that he basically never stays still.
Somehow none of these descriptions mention it, but Felix is heterochromatic; his left eye's green and his right eye's blue.
He also has burn scars on the left side of his face and neck; those ones didn't get mentioned in text because he didn't have them in the first piece, he's too far away from Helen for her to notice in the second, and he's wearing a mask that covers his face in the third.
His hair's not dark as the third piece would suggest, it's bright ginger, but when he's out as Monarch he wears a wig. His hair's still the same length though.
Felix really likes wearing eyeshadow and jewelry, but he doesn't actually do it much due to that being a distinctly Amorian preference and him spending a lot of time around Solite nobility.
He's pretty obviously of Amorian blood, significantly less so than his twin brother Shannon (who's still a ginger but it's much more diluted; also he's not heterochromatic), which can cause quite a bit of conflict due to Amorians not being very well accepted in Solace.
(technically he's half Amorian and half Solite but the second half isn't very obvious)
He wears a lot of rings and is constantly fiddling with them.
He wears pretty flashy clothes.
Now, Kiseki on the other hand, I don't actually have any in-text descriptions of him, Mercy City being a newer WIP of mine. I do, however, have his physical description in the MC character doc! (here's that)
Kiseki Terris- Physical description- Male, 20. 5’7, lithe build with strong sleeper muscles. Suntanned freckled light skin, slanted dark brown eyes. Neck-length straight near-black dark brown hair with a sharp fringe. Nearsighted, wears glasses.
I think his glasses are the rounded-rectangular type ones, the frame's probably metal and silver.
I can't think of anything else, so thank you for the ask! Hope this wasn't too wall-of-text-y I just have a lot of thoughts on my fictional people (don't worry Kiseki's definitely going to get there as well in a bit)

"LET'S START FROM SCRATCH AGAIN AND DO IT RIGHT THIS TIME" -- A 2008 MARVEL STUDIOS STORY.
FILM: "The Incredible Hulk" (2008)
DIRECTOR: Louis Leterrier
SCREENWRITER: Zack Penn
CINEMATOGRAPHY: Peter Menzies Jr.
PRODUCTION COMPANIES: Marvel Studios & Valhalla Motion Pictures
DISTRIBUTION: Universal Pictures
OVERVIEW: "In 2003, Universal released Ang Lee's adaptation of "The Incredible Hulk," one of the most popular and enduring Marvel superheroes (titled "Hulk"). Five years later, Universal has released yet another version of "The Incredible Hulk" (which opened June 13th). This new Hulk movie is actually a "let's start from scratch again and do it right this time" concept. That's because Lee's cerebral approach did not wow the fan base.
PART II: Five years later, Marvel Studios is trying to re-launch the franchise on its own -- Universal is only distributing the movie. French action specialist Louis Leterrier ("The Transporter") directed a brand new cast, featuring Edward Norton as Bruce Banner/The Hulk, and opted for a completely different approach to visual effects.
In 2003, Industrial Light & Magic created some 600 effects shots. In 2008, VFX Supervisor Kurt Williams and VFX Producer Paul Molles oversaw about 800 shots produced by seven different facilities. Rhythm & Hues (including R&H India) produced 224 character animation shots, plus 10 composites, while Hydraulx realized 248 shots featuring complex composites, CG environments, CG helicopter and a full CG Abomination transformation.
Other key vendors included Soho VFX (114 shots -- composites and CG environments) and Image Engine (75 shots -- blood drop shot, plus a CG environment for Rhythm & Hues). Lola VFX, G Creative and X1 also worked on the project."

Shaka Bosatsu (Sakyamuni Bodhisattva), 2nd-3rd century
Gandhara
Crystalline schist
Total height: 138.0 cm; height of the statue: 114.0 cm
This standing statue of Sakyamuni Bodhisattva whose eyes somewhat lowered wears a crown over the turban. He raises his right hand in front of his chest in the abhaya mudra (a hand position to bestow fearlessness and bring about a sense of calm), while placing his left hand on his waist.
The kneeling figure engraved on the crown front holds a floral garland. The Bodhisattva wears various accessories such as earrings, necklaces, breast ornament, armlets and wristlets. His lower body is covered by a skirt-like garment and his feet are in sandals. His body weight is mostly supported by the engaged left leg while the right side is the free leg. This standing statue has features unique to Gandhara such as the crown over the turban, the right hand in the abhaya mudra and the left hand on the waist.
This is one of the few known Sakyamuni Bodhisattva statues. Even among them, this statue has an exceptionally high artistic value. After the death of Gautama Siddhartha, prince of the Shakya clan, who lived during the 5th or 4th century B.C.E., his followers symbolized him in various forms such as the podium, awning, dharmachakra, and pipal tree under which he attained enlightenment. Early Buddhists did not create a statue of the Buddha until the 1st century C.E., when the statues of Buddha began to appear concurrently in Gandhara (northwestern Pakistan) and Mathura (northern India). This statue shows that Gandhara works feature Western-style realistic expressions, which attest to the strong influence of the Greek and Roman arts. In Gandhara, stone statues of Buddha reached their highpoint between the 1st and 3rd century C.E.
The material crystalline schist is a metamorphic rock which tends to break into layers and is difficult to cut out a thick layer. Accordingly, the right hand and toes of this work are made of other piece of the same material and fixed to the body with iron clamps.

In battleground Arizona, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. draws Biden and Trump voters (AP) Some voted for Donald Trump, others for Joe Biden. A few had never wanted anything to do with politics before they heard Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on a podcast or YouTube video. Lined up outside a Phoenix wedding hall tucked between a freeway, a railroad track and a U-Haul rental center, the hundreds of people who turned out Wednesday to hear Kennedy speak shared little in common ideologically. What united them was a deep-seated distrust of the media, of corporations and especially of the government and a belief that Kennedy is the only person in politics willing to tell them the truth. Voters are not enthusiastic about a Biden-Trump rematch, and alternatives like Kennedy or the No Labels third-party movement, which would typically be longshots, see an opening. Kennedy’s appearance in a 2024 battleground state highlights how he could influence the election in ways that are tough to predict. Allies of both Trump and Biden have expressed concerns that Kennedy’s independent bid could pull votes from their candidate in next year’s expected general election rematch.
Migrant caravan in southern Mexico marks Christmas Day by trudging onward (AP) Christmas Day meant the same as any other day for thousands of migrants walking through southern Mexico: more trudging under a hot sun. There were no presents, and Christmas Eve dinner was a sandwich, a bottle of water and a banana handed out by the Catholic church to some of the migrants in the town of Álvaro Obregón, in the southern state of Chiapas, which borders Guatemala. Migrants spent Christmas night sleeping on a scrap of cardboard or plastic stretched out under an awning or tent, or the bare ground. At around 6,000 people, the migrant caravan that set out Sunday was the largest one since June 2022, when a similarly sized group departed Tapachula.
Police in Peru dress up as Santa for festive drugs bust (The Independent) Police in Peru have been spotted carrying out a drugs raid while dressed as Santa Claus. The undercover agents caught two men allegedly selling cocaine and cannabis in a house in Huaral, just north of Lima. ‘Santa’ could be seen using a sledgehammer to break down the door of the house, before removing his beard to cuff one of the suspects.
Plane passengers held pending human trafficking inquiry leave France for India (Reuters) A plane carrying 276 Indian passengers took off on Monday for Mumbai, the French interior ministry’s local office said, after it was grounded for four days pending investigation into possible human trafficking. The flight, carried out by Romanian charter company Legend Airlines, had departed from Dubai and landed at the small Vatry airport on Thursday for a technical stopover when police intervened. Bound for Nicaragua, the flight arrived in France with 303 Indian passengers onboard. After being interrogated by police, two people investigated for human trafficking have been placed under “assisted witness” status while the investigation continues, according to the prosecutor’s office. Another 25 people, including five minors, have stayed in France where they wish to seek asylum, authorities said.
Russian naval ship in Crimea damaged in airstrike by Ukrainian forces, Russian Defense Ministry says (AP) A Russian naval ship in Crimea was damaged in an airstrike by Ukrainian forces, Russia’s Defense Ministry said Tuesday. The landing ship Novocherkassk was hit at a base in the city of Feodosia by plane-launched guided missiles, the ministry said, adding that two Ukrainian fighter jets were destroyed by anti-aircraft fire during the attack. Over the past several months, Ukrainian forces have conducted attacks around Crimea, mostly with sea drones.
China expects searing heat, more weather extremes in 2024 (Reuters) China grappling with one of its coldest Decembers on record will likely have to brace for another round of scorching heat and an increase in extreme weather next year due to the El Nino weather phenomenon, a senior climate expert said. This year has seen China lurch from some of its hottest temperatures logged since 1850 to a harsh cold snap that froze many parts of the country for close to a fortnight earlier this month. This past summer saw Beijing bake in record heat while a remote township in the country’s arid northwest logged a day of 52 degrees Celsius (126 Fahrenheit) the hottest on record for China. Typhoons also brought record-breaking rainfall in China’s north, causing widespread flooding.
Israel’s Economy Expected to Shrink 2% as War Sidelines Workers (NYT) The Israeli economy is expected to shrink by 2 percent this quarter, according to a leading research center, with hundreds of thousands of workers displaced by the war with Hamas or called up as reservists. About 20 percent of the Israeli work force was missing from the labor market in October, up from 3 percent before the fighting began, according to a report from the Taub Center for Social Policy Studies, a nonpartisan think tank in Israel. The spike in unemployment reflects the fact that about 900,000 people were called up to fight, stayed home to take care of children because schools had closed, evacuated from towns near the borders with Lebanon and Gaza or couldn’t work because of physical damage to their industries.
Lose a limb or risk death? Gaza’s wounded face hard choices (AP) The doctors gave Shaimaa Nabahin an impossible choice: lose your left leg or risk death. The 22-year-old had been hospitalized in Gaza for around a week, after her ankle was partially severed in an Israeli airstrike, when doctors told her she was suffering from blood poisoning. Nabahin chose to maximize her chances of survival, and agreed to have her leg amputated 15 centimeters (6 inches) below the knee. The decision upended life for the ambitious university student, as it has for untold others among the more than 54,500 war-wounded who faced similar gut-wrenching choices. Experts believe that in some cases, limbs could have been saved with proper treatment. But after weeks of Israel’s blistering air and ground offensive, only nine out of Gaza’s 36 hospitals are still operational. They are greatly overcrowded, offer limited treatment and lack basic equipment to perform surgeries. Many wounded are unable to reach the remaining hospitals, pinned down by Israeli bombardment and ground combat.
Saudis Keep Low Profile in Red Sea Conflict (NYT) After rebels took over the capital of Yemen in 2014, a 30-year-old Saudi prince named Mohammed bin Salman spearheaded a military intervention to rout them. With American assistance and weapons, Saudi pilots embarked on a bombing campaign called Operation Decisive Storm inside Yemen, the mountainous nation on their southern border. Officials expected to swiftly defeat the rebels, a ragtag tribal militia known as the Houthis. Instead, the prince’s forces spent years mired in a conflict that splintered into fighting between multiple armed groups, drained billions of dollars from Saudi Arabia’s coffers and helped plunge Yemen into one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises. Hundreds of thousands of people died from violence, hunger and unchecked disease. Saudi Arabia and its main partner, the United Arab Emirates, eventually scaled back their military involvement, and Saudi officials entered peace talks with the Houthis, who secured control of northern Yemen. Now, the war in Gaza has thrust the Houthis whose ideology is driven by hostility toward the United States and Israel and support for the Palestinian cause into an unlikely global spotlight. Saudi Arabia, however, would rather watch these latest developments from the sidelines, with the prospect of peace on its southern border a more appealing goal than joining an effort to stop attacks that the Houthis say are directed at Israel a state the kingdom does not officially recognize and which is widely reviled by its people.
Attack in Nigeria (Foreign Policy) At least 160 people were killed and 300 people wounded in attacks on villages in central Nigeria, local officials said Monday. Monday Kassah, head of the local government in Bokkos, Plateau State, told the AFP that armed groups locally known as bandits launched attacks on at least 20 communities. Plateau State Gov. Caleb Mutfwang condemned the violence as “barbaric, brutal, and unjustified,” and governor’s office spokesperson Gyang Bere vowed to take proactive measures to protect civilians. However, Amnesty International criticized the government following the attacks, writing on X that “the Nigerian authorities have been failing to end frequent deadly attacks on rural communities of Plateau State.”
A Thriving Border Town Undercuts South Africa’s Anti-Immigrant Mood (NYT) By 7 a.m., lines of customers snake down the block outside stores on the main commercial strip in Musina, a bustling South African border town where thousands of people arrive daily from neighboring Zimbabwe to buy food, clothes and other necessities that are hard to get back home. A few miles away, at the border, pickup trucks bearing the seal of South Africa’s newly formed border patrol inspect the razor-wire fence, looking to arrest people who cross illegally braving bandits, crocodiles and the rushing Limpopo River. The border force represents an effort by the government, months ahead of crucial national elections, to respond to popular demand and clamp down on migrants sneaking into the country. Musina, surrounded by farms and a copper mine, is where the government’s muscular immigration policy collides with a tricky reality that many South Africans are loath to concede: that even people who cross the border illegally may be good for the country. Like politicians in the United States, Europe and elsewhere who score points by promising hardened borders and mass deportation, their South African counterparts are pitching a sweeping crackdown on foreigners to appeal to voters, playing on similar, often-unfounded fears that immigrants fuel crime and steal jobs.
Pope Francis blasts the weapons industry as he makes a Christmas appeal for peace in the world (AP) Pope Francis on Monday blasted the weapons industry and its “instruments of death” that fuel wars as he made a Christmas Day appeal for peace in the world and in particular between Israel and the Palestinians. Speaking from the loggia of St. Peter’s Basilica to the throngs of people below, Francis said he grieved the “abominable attack” of Hamas against southern Israel on Oct. 7 and called for the release of hostages. And he begged for an end to Israel’s military campaign in Gaza and the “appalling harvest of innocent civilians” as he called for humanitarian aid to reach those in need. Francis devoted his Christmas Day blessing to a call for peace in the world, noting that the biblical story of the birth of Christ in Bethlehem sent a message of peace. But he said that Bethlehem “is a place of sorrow and silence” this year. He took particular aim at the weapons industry, which he said was fueling the conflicts around the globe with scarcely anyone paying attention. “It should be talked about and written about, so as to bring to light the interests and the profits that move the puppet strings of war,” he said. “And how can we even speak of peace, when arms production, sales and trade are on the rise?” Francis has frequently blasted the weapons industry as “merchants of death” and has said that wars today, in Ukraine, in particular, are being used to try out new weapons or use up old stockpiles.
