Y'know what bothers me most about Bionicle weaponry?

It's not the metallic beings covered in plate armour still wielding swords; I have no trouble believing in fantasy super-metals that can shear and punch through each other when shaped into a blade. Plus blades could still do significant damage to all the exposed organic tissue and vulnerable joints.

It's not any of the comically oversized weapons either; these characters are much stronger than humans, they can get away with proportionally implausible equipment.

Dual-purpose weapons, impractical designs, utterly bizarre contraptions, none of that really irks me at all. I'm here for it.

What bothers me is the near-complete lack of counterweights.

Seriously. None of these swords have pommels. None of these spears' butts are weighted (Or spiked! Huge loss!). It seems like the handles of most tools end somewhere in the user's palm. You're lucky to even see a shaft continuing beyond the hand, let alone properly finished. These things would be flying out of people's hands all the time, not to mention the balance issues.

Basically, Axonn is the only bitch I respect. Even if the shaft of that axe is so thin that a single swing would snap it like a twig, at least he understands the importance of a good weighted grip.

I can overlook most aesthetic quirks, even appreciate them, but this I say, is where I draw the line. This and all the holes in the shields, I mean honestly.

Random Bionicle Thought

Axonn was all angry with Brutaka for betraying everything he stood for to try and take over the world. As if he himself didn't turn into a world-conquering warlord when he got bored one day after his original organization dissolved.

They're more alike than they think.

i like that of the original species in bionicle (ie: built by the great beings pre-launch, rather than mata nui) they get progressively larger and less interesting as we learn about them

Hydraxon's (barramoi) - Largest of the lads. 9ft or so. No powers, just a guy.

Axonn's (akiamu) - Not much taller than a glatorian really, just beefier. 7.5ft. Limited "powers" (ie: create lightning)

Toa - Glatorian size or maybe a bit smaller. 7ft. Literal demigods of their "elements" (ie: control lightning)

Matoran - Agori-size??? Smaller than an Agori? 4.5ft if i recall. Contains the power to transform into one of the aforementioned demigods

I like to see this as a sort of progression - from the clunkiest and most basic of synthetic life, utterly lacking in special abilities and completely reliant on physical size, strength, and skill to fight, to the incredibly compact Toa that's no larger than the typical glatorian warrior yet full of unimaginable power.

The great beings had to learn as they went and actively applied everything they discovered to waves of progressively tougher security with the occasional one-off experiment - god forbid some layman break in and discover all your sinister machinations

So Tobduk was renamed upon joining the Order of Mata Nui, with his new name referencing his background and the circumstances under which he joined the Order ("survivor"). I wonder if the same goes for other Order members as well and the reason Axonn is called that is because Helryx thinks she's funny.

Ok actually I can't be bothered to add this to that whole reblog chain thing.

Axonn and Brutaka's dynamic (from what I've seen) kinda has "historians would say they were good friends" energy. Like these two guys are really close. One gives the other a cool weapon as a gift. One of them turns evil, and the other vows to save him. Eventually they reconcile or something. I might be getting some of this wrong. Anyway this is part of why I insist they're not "divorced" or whatever.
