Lumity Week Day 1: Azura Bookclub

Last week, the final book in the Good Witch Azura series was released. And frankly, Amity was rather anxious to get her hands on it. Luckily, when Luz visited last time, she was able to snag her a copy. She was filled to the brim with excitement, so much so that she couldn't help but take Luz by the face and kiss her over and over again. Today, she finally put the book down. Because today, they were going to talk about how it ended.

It was strange to think that the series would end at all, much less the way that it did. Amity, quite frankly, didn't know what to feel. She and Luz shared their love for the series when they were just fourteen. Amity herself has been reading them since she was eleven. And now they're both sixteen. The series that brought them closer together had been brought to a close. It was over, just like that.

Amity set her reading glasses down on the end table along with her book, and she rubbed at the corners of her eyes with her thumb and forefinger. She was just about to get up from her seat when she heard a knock at the door.

Weird, Amity thought, I wasn't expecting her until four. It was then that her gaze drifted over to the demon clock that hung on the wall in her room, which read: four-fifteen. Oh! Dear Titan!

"Psst," Luz hissed through the door, "sweet potato, it's me."

"Be there in a minute," Amity called back to her as she quickly set a table up in the middle of the room with a few chairs tucked away neatly underneath. She breathed deeply before turning to open the door for her.

"Hey."

"Que tal, hermosa," Luz greeted her girlfriend, kissing her on the cheek.

Amity flushed, "oh, I was just finishing up --"

"The book? Emira told me you were still reading it when I got here."

Amity rubbed at the back of her neck, her face growing hotter. "How's school going for you?" She deflected.

Luz pulled up one of the chairs Amity set up and sat down, folding her hands into one another and resting her chin. "It's been alright," she sighed, "it's definitely better than before I came to the Isles, but I still prefer it here, you know?"

"That’s not an excuse for you not to do your work, is it?" Amity said sternly, leaning her hand on one hip.

"No, absolutely not," Luz smiled at her, "I just like being here. I like being with you."

Amity nodded and pulled out the other chair to sit across from Luz. "I like you here too," she said softly, kissing her cheek, "now, do you want me to get any snacks or drinks for you, mi batata?"

This time Luz flushed, "Yes, please."

Once they prepared the snacks and some tea, Luz set her copy of the book down on the table. Her eyes gleamed with anticipation.

“Sooo,” she mused, “what did you think?”

Amity was caught off guard. She only just finished the book and barely had time to think. The first time Luz asked her this, she had recently finished the fifth book, Turn of the Tides, and was giving her back the copy she borrowed. Back then, she had so much on her mind: school, pressure from her mother, and her crush on Luz. All of it swam through her head that it made her practically dizzy.

In retrospect, Amity enjoyed the book. She especially enjoyed the new character that was introduced; Lucy’s sibling, Mica Malingale. Luz found a fan drawing of her with Mica, and she was so embarrassed that she immediately burned the drawing.

“Do you mind starting?” She asked, “I still need time to think.”

Luz made a mock bow in response, at least the best interpretation of one while sitting down. “It would be my absolute pleasure,” she said in her most exaggerated posh Erynian accent. Amity couldn’t help but laugh at how cute she was.

The young witch took a sip of her warm tea and watched lovingly as Luz went on about the story. What she liked, what she didn’t like, and what she thought was great in concept but needed better execution. And then she stopped suddenly. Luz had tears rolling down her cheeks.

“Amity,” Luz said meditatively, “have you heard about what happened when I faced Belos? What really happened?”

“Eda told me a few things,” Amity answered worriedly, “Why? What’s going on?”

“You know how Azura died?”

Amity paused. She knew exactly what Luz was saying. Reaching over to touch her hand, she spoke to her calmly.

“But she came back, didn’t she?” Amity said, “And even if she stayed dead, she sacrificed herself for Hecate. Azura always thought she was an awful person for falling for Menos’ tricks. But that’s what he does; he tricks people. He tricked all of Eryon. He used the Desolation to lie to and manipulate the people. But just because she fell for it doesn’t make her a bad person. It made her a victim. But Azura saw Menos for what he really was. He labeled everyone who defied him as a witch. She rose and called him out for his abuse and claimed the title of The Good Witch not just for her, but for everyone he mistreated.”

Amity rose out of her chair now, “And she never had to sacrifice herself to prove that she was good, even if she had no choice. All she had to do was be there for the people; for everyone that she came across on her adventures; Malingale, Eila, Aithlin, even Hecate,” tears started rolling down Amity’s cheeks, “Hecate, while she was a childhood friend, she became an enemy, another victim of Menos. But Azura made her see that she was wrong. And eventually, Hecate grew to love her.”

Amity now knelt before Luz and put her hands on her shoulders, “and with that love, she brought her back. Despite everything they’ve been through, she loved her. And you can’t take loved away.”

Luz wept into Amity’s shoulder. It was everything that Luz needed to hear. She never completely processed what happened back then. And when the hero that she looked up to suffered nearly the same fate, it brought everything back.

It brought back all the hardships and all the struggles she faced. All the mistakes that she made. But in the end, she had love, just like Azura.

Luz wiped the tears away from her eyes and withdrew her breath. Then she smiled at Amity, the Hecate to her Azura, her cotton candy goddess. She was so lucky to have someone like her by her side. Luz leaned in to kiss Amity, and she returned the favor. They stayed that way for a while until they eventually pulled away. Luz then started to laugh.

“What’s so funny?”

“So, I see you liked the book.”

Amity’s face grew hot, and joined in her girlfriend’s laughter, “You’re such a dork.”

“You know it.”

Amity leaned into Luz’s shoulder, kissing her cheek, “I love you.”

Luz’s smile softened as she rested her cheek against Amity’s head.

“I love you too.”

Day 23: Crossover (LOTR X TOH)

Headcanons:

●Sam and Frodo join the Amity and Luz bookclub of Azura (they love the books)

●Luz teaches Frodo Spanish and Frodo teaches her Elvish

●When Amity wants to make a surprise gift to Willow she ask Sam for help for the meanigs of the plants or just to create one with magic

●Frodo and Amity are BIG nerds and they play trivial together

●Luz reads at loud her books for Sam (both of they are obsseded with fantasy books)

●Sam gets horrified and fascinated about the food of the demon realm

●Frodo gets adopted by Eda

●Luz is the new best friend of Pippin and Merry

●Willow and Sam become best friends

●Gus makes ilusions during Bilbo's birthday to distract Gandalf while Pippin is stealing the fireworks (they get caught)

●Luz and Frodo love to make their partners blush

●Pippin and Merry help Eda with her store (Merry attracts the costumers and Pippin pick-pocket them)

●All the hobbits love King and Gollum tries to eat him

●Eda and Gandalf are friends

●Legolas and Amity becomes buddys (they gave each other tips for their hair)

●Raine and Elrond play instruments together

●Luz makes fanfiction with Sam about Legolas and Gimli (at first Sam is a bit shy about doing it)

●Sam gets a crush on Eda thinking that she was an elf (Gimli too)

●Sam, Frodo, Amity and Luz go on double dates

●Gimli and Willow do excercise together, Gimli teaches Willow how to use his ax

I appreciate the “Boscha is a secret Good Witch Azura fan” headcanon, but I keep thinking about how she was part of King’s little fan group when he became a famous author and how she keeps showing up in the background in the Book fair and Book shop scenes.

Counter-headcanon: Boscha is actually an avid reader in general. She’s a huge booksnob that turns her nose up at fluffy YA novels like Azura. 

But then Amity learned about Boscha’s love of reading and spent most of the initial months of their friendship trying to get her to read the Azura series.

Boscha can recite passages of Azura from memory because that’s how much Amity just.would.stop.talking.about.the.books.

And then Luz came along. And then there were two of them.

So her coming over to Luz’s booth and trashing the Azura Bookclub isn’t coming from wanting to hide her own fangirlish tendencies, it comes from genuine rage at the prospect of having to listen to two witches shilling this mediocre YA series and having to learn more about Azura against her will.

oh, what a wonderful two months of maze women content we’ve had! it’s been incredible to see how many people got involved with the event and maybe even created wlw content for the very first time… you all did an amazing job, and i hope it won’t stop here.

LUMITY:

-movie nights, where luz is in the middle and you and amity are both curled up next to her (with popcorn!!)

-sharing earphones but since there's only two ending up unplugging them and blasting music

-hugs. all the hugs. e v e r y h u g

-I think lumity would be an established couple already, maybe you're luz' or amity's best friend, and you have feelings for them both, and shit goes down yada yada and you join the relationship

HUNTLOW:

-I think it'd really domestic you feel?

-like baking and picnics, and just... Small little things

-tripping over a rock and having willow freak out but try to keep it together while hunter internally implodes at th sight of blood

-willow is the only chill

-you and hunter are simply chaos gremlins

-making lunches the night before school/work/events/whatever together

-willow tries to teach you to take care of plants but you're shit at it

-infodumping all about your special interests to each other

-not having to make eye contact because it makes hunter uncomfortable (it also makes me uncomfortable lmao)

-human AU takes, willow a theater kid + aspiring voice actor, hunter is a comic book artist, they both listen to rock in slightly different genres (willow is more into modern indie while hunter prefers 90s/2000s era stuff), willow is part of an environmental conservation club, she plays volleyball, and hunter is like the quiet kid stereotype

-hunter is heavily musical, expect to either listen to a lot of practice or practice with him if you play

-showing up to flyer derby matches and practices to cheer them on

RAEDA:

-you and raine used to date after raeda broke up, and then you got with eda much later on in your life. reunion bullshit and eventually here you are with a two step children and the same number of spouses

-eda was always opposed to the idea of marriage---not dating, marriage. she thought it was weird. then she actually met people she wanted to marry. on the other hand, Raine always loved the idea, they thought it was romantic. they were a little worried they'd make a mistake though

-well after a few years of marriage, tthey can confirm they did not make a mistake, and they couldn't be happier with their wife and spouse

-raine isn't great at cooking. none of you are honestly. eda is passable at best but has burnt more than she's done well.youre probably the best over all, by that's really not saying much

-having a part in raines rhapsody and some of their other compositions

Don't let Tibbles destroy your Headcanons

Okay, so this is me rambling about the whole "Azura Reveal". Why it feels like a cop-out or retcon to me. And why I don't think this was ever meant to "shut down" all of the headcanons and theories (despite making them non-canon).

First off, let's talk about all the questions this reveal opens up:

Amity has four books - why would there be a shipping crate with a mix of all currently published books? Either their being only four books (a fan collection) or a lot of the same book (books being shipped before they are sold) would make way more sense.

Did this con last multiple years? Did Tibbles "publish" those books one at a time, or did he just sell all of them at once?

If it's the latter, does that mean Amity only became an Azura fan in the last year or so? Are you telling me she didn't go digging to find out when the next book would come out? That she wouldn't notice if no one ever heard of those books?

If it's the former, why would Tibbles continue this scam after the first book didn't sell? (How long did Matt work for him?)

Even if it was just the last year, that's still a lot of time and work that Tibbles invested into some books that clearly aren't making him any money.

It's also not just books! There's at least one (if not more) Azura movies both Amity and Luz know about. Did they also somehow survive the Boiling Sea in the same crate? If so, how did Tibbles even get them to work? Is Tibbles an expert on human technology?

Did Mattholomule have to go over this film frame by frame to paint in pointed ears?

The only clear answers we do get is that no, the author of Azula isn't a witch and can't help Luz.

Now, from a Doyalist perspective, I assume the following:

The Azura franchise was introduced purely to help Luz connect with the Demon Realm (and in particular, Amity Blight).

In season 1, the writers didn't think through the implications of a big franchise existing simultaneously in both worlds.

In season 2, they did think about those implications /those implications were pointed out by fans in s1.

Then, I believe the combination of "Luz can't find another way to Earth" and "We don't want to waste any more time on Azura" led to the Azura wrap-up/retcon.

Anyway, if there are any people who saw that episode and told themselves "Well, Iet's forget about all my theories about Azura and go with what canon told us", please don't do that.

Because I don't believe that is what the creators wanted.

After all, they included a whole conversation between Luz and Amity about "theories", which ends with them planning to "write their own stories".

So dig out those old ideas! Make up some more headcanons! Make something beautiful with them and have fun!

headcanon that Boscha is a really good narrator and storyteller, which causes Luz and Amity to recruit her into the Azura Book Club to read aloud for them.

A few meetings of the bookclub later, Luz and Amity are cuddled up to Boscha while she reads

See, I would probably jump to her telling an absolute sappy, obviously not professional children's story that you know Boscha would NEVER read. Not in a million years. Not for anyone other than the small, five year old child she then carries to bed before Luz and Amity thank her for managing to finally get all three of theirs sick girl to get some sleep.

You know how there's a mystery surrounding how Amity got her copies of 'Good Witch Azura'? And how we're gonna have an episode soon about Luz and Amity exploring the library?

What if the books somehow came from the library itself? That would give them a reason to explore it, even if it was dangerous. If they could find the source of these books, they could find a way home for Luz.

I don't think the search would amount to much, it is only a b-plot in the fifth episode after all, but it could be an interesting look into potential unexplored drama for their relationship. Specifically, how Amity would feel about Luz going home.

Would she feel bad about her new friend/crush leaving? Would she rather Luz stayed? Does she even know she plans on leaving yet? How would Luz feel if Amity expressed these feelings? Would she feel more conflicted about leaving the Boiling Isles?

This would be the perfect location to explore it too! This is where their friendship started, and now it's where they might say goodbye? Last time they were there, Amity wanted her to leave, and now that might actually happen. It's also Amity's safe space away from her parents, a place where they can't separate her and Luz, but now they might be separated anyway.

Just imagine the episode starting with Luz and Amity comfortably having an Azura Bookclub session in her secret hideout, and then the question of how they each discovered the series comes up, which leads to Luz talking about wanting to find a portal home. Then they'd go from having a nice time together, to going on a dangerous adventure, one that makes Amity upset in multiple ways.

Azura and Hecate have my entire heart y'all. This line came to me while I was working on the back half of the fic and I wrote it down, knowing I HAD to put it in.
