Beef with onions
Beef with onions Here is a simple recipe of beef using onions. This is a less spicy curry which can be used as side dish for rice and chapatis. It can be easily prepared using lesser ingredients. The speciality of this curry is that we do not use any kind of masala powders in it. Addition of celery and capsicum provides an extra flavour to this delicious curry. All the beef lovers may check out…

10 mutuals I'd like to know better
aww thank you for the tag @dulcidyne!!! :)))
Last song I listened to: I think it was unironically DJ Got Us Falling in Love by Usher because I just heard he was going to do the halftime show and I LOVE Usher
Favorite content to watch: (I'm cheating it's listening not watching) Dungeons and Daddies podcast on spotify (but also Bob's Burgers I can rewatch that show endlessly)
Favorite games: Mass Effect, Red Dead Redemption 2, Cyberpunk 2077, Witcher 3, Dying Light 2, Sims 4
Favorite color: Orange
Favorite animals: Camels, alpacas, cats
Favorite food: LET ME TELL YOU I just moved to Columbus and I'm trying to eat at all of Guy Fieri's restaurants from Triple D and I have fallen in LOVE with momos. So the pork momos from Momo Ghar in downtown Columbus. But typically it's pierogies and schnitzel.
Sweet, spicy, or savory: how about I raise you salty?
Current obsessions: (also unironically) The Bachelor. I am SHAKING at the Golden Bachelor coming out this week. That, and Bake Off coming back this week! Big week for me. BIG week.
Last book I read: Emily Wilde's Encyclopedia of Faeries by Heather Fawcett! 5 stars! (the current read is A Master of Djinn by P. Djeli Clark)
Last thing I googled: crock pot french dip recipe I made for dinner tonight! It's the easiest thing in the world. It's a 4 pound pot roast, an onion, a few garlic cloves, 4 cups of beef broth, a pack of french onion soup mix, and some seasonings. Just throw it in the crock pot on low for 8 hours, then put on a hoagie bun with provolone cheese and stick under the broiler until it's melted. Absolutely divine dinner.
Relationship: Been dating my boyfriend, we hit six years in December! (and hopefully engaged soon wink wink)
Fun fact: I went to high school with the Paul brothers and funner fact! Jake Paul used to be a piece of shit! He still probably is! But he sucked in high school! He was mean! And a douche!
Anyways it's not ten people because I don't even think I know ten people but here are my mutuals I tag for this!!! @carnivorousbelvedere @sparkandwhimsy @dispatchwithlove @teamdilf @theorangeweirdo @milkywayes

Questioning, Part 2: 26-50
If we're counting fanfiction as books, Sunrise in Exile by Ragdoll. It's MCU fanfic, so if that doesn't float your boat, you have been warned, but I find it good daydreaming material. Frankly, I love their portrayal of FRIDAY. If we're not, then "S." by Doug Dorst and J. J. Abrams. It's a book within a book, with two people trading the fictional library book "Ship of Theseus" and writing out their story in the margins.
@becausegoodheroesdeservekidneys. Elanor's political commentary is both absurdly funny and on-point and she covers several other important topics, such as climate change and celtophobia. Side note, notice how Grammarly tried to autocorrect celtophobia to xenophobia and "gelotophobia", which google tells me is a fear of being laughed at.
Family stuff's private, sorry.
Heights. Actually, it's less heights, and more falling. I can be on top of tall things as much as I want, but the second I approach an edge, my legs start to go shaky and I can't. I can't even step on some high balconies.
Antidisestablishmentarianism. I have no clue what it means, the rhythm of it is just nice.
"The Silent Patient" by Alex Michaelides, "The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo" by Taylor Jenkins Reid, and "The Bullet That Missed" by Richard Osman. If I get any others, I've heard that "Cain's Jawbone" and "Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe" are both very good.
The Owl House or Steven Universe. Yes, I know the latter's everything, especially the ending, was problematic, but the songs are chill and nostalgic, and I can enjoy things while also recognizing that they're not good.
Self-ID shit is always the hardest, I don't fuckin know. I do reblog some fan shit, but not that much.
I don't really know. I've always just kinda done my own thing.
If I had to pick, probably "The Bachelor" or something like that. Good for fatigue nights, where you don't have the mental strength to watch anything more intellectually stimulating, (if even that) but not much else.
Don't have one. Never been one for superstition. if I had to pick, though, 17 feels right.
Hydrangeas. We have a bush in the front garden, and it's always so pretty in the summer. Tulips are very beautiful too, and there are these tiny purple flowers that grow in my neighbor's garden that always pop up right around the start of spring.
Opal's gorgeous, as well as peacock ore.
I'm going for a full sunrise ombre, from dark blue at the top to yellow at the bottom.
I am *not*. Changing or skipping over history is a recipe for disaster - for the universe for the former, and for me for the latter. I refuse to be the one to deal with such nonsense.
A good steak with peppercorn sauce, and creamy mashed potatoes with beef gravy.
Either Brownie a la Mode, Cookie Dough, or Dulce de Leche. No, I will not be deciding.
Margaret Thatcher. Gonna shove her face in some mashed potatoes and peas.
7-in-1 Shampoo, Conditioner, Soap, Mouthwash, Toothpaste, Car Coolant, Hair-Gel. Hey, it covers all of the basics, even if it's not the best in the market for any of them.
When I'm camping, especially in the summer, the very early morning, just after the sun rises. Fog hangs over the area where I camp like a cloud at that time, and it's stunningly beautiful yet terrifyingly eerie. Anytime else, the afternoon. Early enough to not be exhausted and a good time to get shit done, but it doesn't have the lazy, chill vibes morning does.
I do not, but thank you. So are you, :).
I've wanted to learn Irish Gaelic for a long while now, but unfortunately, my audial processing is bad enough in English, so that might be a while in the making. Spanish, French, or Mandarin all seem like they'd be very useful to learn.
Strawberries are awesome, but I'll never turn down a good apple, and blueberry muffins in particular are great.
The characters from The Owl House. ITts going to be amazing, yet incredibly chaotic. I love it already.
Aww, thank u boo :D. ILY2.

hi autumn! i have this hc for santí that he can cook, he just doesn't cook well. i feel like people often make him this hotshot bachelor who can't really cook. sure he's been fed during his service, but i think he has a few guatemalan (is his chara guatemalan?) recipes from home that he cooks really well. when it comes to new recipes he's not used to, that's where he struggles and people see him struggling, but not the few excellent dishes he makes. what are your thoughts?
Santiago can cook - Headcanon.
I am a firm believer that Santiago ‘Pope’ Garcia can cook.
Santi loves to cook for you, which is perfect because you love to eat. He told you that he could make a mean breakfast on the first date, and you let him prove it to you by staying the night. In the morning, he makes pancakes and swirls the batter with cinnamon, nutmeg, and fresh vanilla beans. It’s one of the most delicious breakfasts that you’d had in years.
During his years in the service, he hated most of the food; it was made for large companies with various tastes. The guys used to make fun of him for the hot sauce bottle he brought to every meal (even though they would use it too). So when he got out, he stayed home for a couple of months with his mom.
Santi’s mom is Colombian, and she teaches him some staple dishes from her culture so when he gets a place of his own, he can cook. His personal favorite is Bandeja Paisa, a traditional dish consisting of white rice, red beans, ground beef, plantain, chorizo, morcilla, chicharron, arepa, avocado, and a fried egg.
It does take him some time to learn new recipes, but that’s mostly because he has to learn a new way to cook. Sautee, steam, bake, fry...it’s a lot to learn, but it’s something he enjoys, relaxing.
When you move in together, he begins cooking dinner with you, and it’s a great time just to spend some quality time together. There is always music playing, and you share about your day. His hands coming to wrap around your waist as you still a sauce or wash something in the sink. He sneaks kisses when you walk past him or will pull you into his arms for a dance.
You can tell what kind of a day he’s had when he gets home before you and is in the kitchen. The sink is a mile high with dirty dishes and Metallica on full volume as he furiously chops vegetables, not even noticing you in the doorway until he turns to throw them into the pot of simmering butter and nearly jumps a foot in the air. “Querida! Don’t scare me like that when I have a knife in my hand!” he shouts, and you raise your hands in mock surrender as he sighs and turns off the music and puts down the knife.
“Rough day, baby?” he nods and folds himself into your arms, resting his forehead against your shoulder as you run your fingers along his scalp. “Come on,” you whisper, pulling him back for a kiss, “let’s finish dinner, and then take a bath; you don’t have to talk about it if you don’t want to.”
“You know I love you, right?” he asks earnestly. “I know, Santi, I love you too.”

His Valentine
Pairing: 40s!Bucky x 40s!Reader
Warnings: long word count, angst (if you squint), and fluff!
Word Count: 2.3K
Summary: Bucky gets stood up while going on a date and the reader goes and rescues him. Not wanting his night to end on a bad note, she takes him on a date, resulting in Bucky realizing by the end of it that it was her all along.
Tumblr media
Hello guys! I hope your weekend is going well! Despite it being quite late to the Valentine’s Day holiday, I truly wanted to get this one out so bad when I got the chance! Who doesn’t want to be swooned by Bucky? I dedicate this work to my wonderful Bucket, @world-of-aus as she is the one who did inspire me with writing, so this is a little something for her and you guys! You have to forgive me for getting so carried away with this one! Enjoy!
Tumblr media
Ring. Ring. Ring.
“Hello?” You ask into the phone?
“U-Ummm… Y/N?” you hear a familiar voice question. Your eyes shoot wide open.
“B-Bucky?” You gasp, holding the telephone firmer in your palm. You were not expecting him to call at all. “What is happening, Buck? Need an extra tie? A thicker coat? You should be have dinner with that dame you know-”
“Y/N…”
“Dolores, right? That redhead that you’ve been into. You have to be ther-”
“Y/N, she’s not coming.” He sighs in disappointment, frustration and sadness evident in his tone, making your eyes widen even more than they originally were. “Oh my goodness, Buck, you’re kiddin’. On Valentine’s Day?! After all you two did? Maybe it took her a while to get ready?” You question in disbelief, trying your hardest to not get your hopes up.
“Oh no that’s not what it is, doll.”
“What makes you say that?”
“She came with another man… Richard Jones.”
“Oh my gosh, that’s terrible. You’re at the Stork Club, right?”
“Yes-”
“Alright, wait outside. Be there in about 10 minutes. Give me a second. And don’t you dare go anywhere.” Is the last thing you say before you hang up, immediately telling your mom that you’ll head out and bring your best friend home for the night. You waste no time changing into a decent evening dress and a coat, hat, and gloves before you head to the Stork Club, determined to make your best friend get the Valentine’s Day evening he deserves.
“God, Y/N… I don’t know what I did wrong. I genuinely tried. Even spent money in Coney Island for her. She said yes to this, only for me to find out she comes in with a richer bachelor in Brooklyn.” He grunts as follows you into your house. You thank him under your breath as he continues. “What does he have that I don’t? I thought I made it clear I wanted this to work.” You stop in the middle of the living room to turn around and cup his cheeks, having enough of his moping. “James Buchanan Barnes, are you listening to yourself?” You start off, eyes looking straight up at his ocean blues. You continue on when he silently stares at you, surprise apparent in his eyes.
“Listen, I don’t care which dame you decide to take on a date, I don’t care who it is, I don’t like how they bypass someone like you! Listen, to all the girls, you are the most eligible and handsome bachelor in Brooklyn. Aside from that reputation, they are missing out on the Bucky I know. The Bucky I know is witty, kind, giving, selfless, loving, humorous, smart, curious. You are more than a handsome face. You are Bucky. If those dames you wanna date or dance with cannot see that? That’s their loss! They have missed out on a great guy.”
Bucky’s eyes had widened at your statement, he had soon realized he didn’t expect this talk from you. “Listen, Dolores was wrong for this. Especially on Valentine’s Day. You did nothing wrong. Do not degrade yourself because of someone who has done you wrong, you hear? We are going to make it better, I promise. Why don’t we have a hangout instead? Maybe we can eat some dinner here, and maybe go watch a movie, or something you’d like to do.” You say softly, in a more calming tone than last time.
Bucky only could nod, a small, yet hopeful smile now forming on his face. “I… I think I’d appreciate that, Y/N.” He responds, making you reciprocate his smile back, giving him a nice and warm hug before heading into the kitchen. “Good… I’ll make some roast beef, salad, and mash. You stay put at the table.” You call out, prepping the food. Bucky did the total opposite, leaning against the doorframe as he watches you cook and prepare the ingredients. He smiled at the fact you turned on the gramophone to hear your favorite record play throughout the home, humming along and bouncing slightly as you concentrated on your work.
His eyes widened at how he felt. Why was he getting tingly feelings in his stomach? Why was his heart racing? Why did he feel like he was going to faint when he heard you giggle at your own shenanigans? Why did this feeling always come back when he was around you? He shook it off, as he always did. However, within minutes, he wanted to face palm himself. You didn’t have a guy to greet you tonight. You must be uncomfortable hearing all of the Valentine’s Day talk since last week, and now he’s bringing it up again.
“Oh no. Hey Buck? Do you mind if you do a quick run to the grocery store and get some sour cream? I realized I don’t have anymore.” You call out to him. Perfect, he thinks. He doesn’t hesitate to go on ahead. Maybe he can come back with a surprise for you, his selfless best friend.
It didn’t take long for him to come back, handing you the sour cream and heading back to wait at the table at his seat. He smiled when he saw the way you arranged it, as it was notably organized, the way you always wanted it. He couldn’t contain the excitement, fidgeting as he waited for you. “Alright! Dinner time!” You giggle, setting down the roast beef before you set down the bowl of mashed potatoes. “Bon appetit! Happy Valentine’s Day!” You squeal, clapping your hands together as you look at the dinner with satisfaction. “It looks so delicious,” Bucky compliments with a beaming smile, looking up at you with a gleam in his eyes. “This is always our favorite whenever you, Steve, and I celebrated somethin’ over here, like our birthdays.” He recalls, making you smile even more at the memories that begin to fill your head.
“Well, dig in, Buck!” You giggle, serving him with a good amount of salad, beef, and mashed potatoes before helping yourself. “Had to learn the recipe from momma, it’s probably the most delicious dish for a formal setting.” You remark, pouring water in your cup and his. “You’re right! We haven’t had this in a while!” Bucky exclaims before taking a bite. “Oh goodness, Y/N, this is so delicious.” He says, groaning in satisfaction before continuing his dinner.
Dinner went about just fine. It was freeing for you both, for when you two were around with each other, all reservations would be thrown at the window, resulting in you two behaving as if you were still children teasing and making jokes. All thoughts and heartaches about Dolores were also out the window, for you two were completely fine and happy in each other’s company.
You washed the dishes and finished them promptly, excited to come back to Bucky’s company that awaited you in the living room. Your excitement had only risen when you heard the familiar record that you both loved to hear as well as Bucky calling your name. “Yes?” you ask as you make your way to the living room, eyebrows furrowing when you noticed that the lights were dimmed, the room only lit by the candles that had formerly been placed on the dining. However, your audible confusion turned quickly into a gasp as you saw him stand up with your favorite assortment of sweets in one hand and a bouquet of red roses on the other. There was no way this man was real.
“Happy Valentine’s Day, sweetheart.” He says with that ever charming smile of his.
“Oh, Buck! This is so lovely! Thank you so much!” You exclaim in disbelief, gently and carefully taking the flowers and sweets from him to set on the coffee table. Your eyes meet his, your smile matching his before you engulf him in a tight and warm embrace. “H-How?” You ask, trying hard to not let those tears that were threatening to fall succeed. Your heart fluttered when you heard him whisper in your ear soothingly as he rubs your back, “I think my most giving and kind best friend deserves some form of kindness and giving back this Valentine’s Day.” You must be dreaming. Never would you think you’d somehow be in the receiving end of Bucky Barnes’ charm. Never did you think that you’d be experiencing gestures like these from him. Although this was just two best friends trying to make each other feel better, you were willing to take it and imagine that he was here to make you swoon like he did with any other dame.
“Y/N, sweetheart,” He whispers in your ear, causing you both to gaze into each other’s eyes once again, you two experiencing the dizziness, tingling, and racing heart once again tonight. However, you heard his breathing become more shaky than a few minutes ago. “You… you had treated me through a wonderful dinner and your kind words. Can I repay you with my flowers and sweets and a dance?” He asks softly, trying his hardest to hide the nervousness that was dying to become known. He didn’t know what made him offer this to you. You two were never this close and intimate before. However, his desire to be sure of himself overruled any fear he had in his head.
He only smiled when you nodded, his hand holding yours as the other placed itself on the small of your back, guiding you into a small and slow dance. You sighed happily as you both started to dance cheek to cheek, swaying effortlessly across the room. Smiling as Bucky expertly spun you and brought you back to his form before he once again sweeped you across the floor. This made Bucky calm down. No longer nervous, no longer scared, no longer doubtful. He was now sure. He was now sure that you and him had something much more than what him and Dolores, let alone the other dames had. He never found any comfort, any peace, any transparency with any of them as he does with you. With you, he never needed to hold back. With you, everything seems to be calm. He enjoyed watching you smile, watching you laugh, cook, sing, sleep, exist.
That’s when he realized.
He loves you. He always has.
That explains the tingles, for they were butterflies. That explains the racing heart, the dizziness. He was in love with you. He has denied his feelings for so long. He denied them when he saw you being approached by other boys. Then other teens. Then other men. It was not hard to see how beautiful you were and are. However, no one saw how you would skip when you were happy. No one saw how your eyes lit up at the sight of ice cream. No one saw how your eyes lit up when your tiny feet kicked as you played in the swings. No one took notice of your eyebrows furrowing when you studied arithmetic. No one took notice of how critical you were of yourself so that you may be as perfect as you can. Bucky, however, had fallen in love with all of this.
He loved you from the moment he watched your five year old self eat your ice cream happily at the drugstore with soda pop alongside you.  He loved you even if you two argued about a broken wagon. He loved you even if it pained him to watch you laugh with another man. He loved you when you came to check up on him the day after his dates. He still loves you, as you sway in front of him, in that beautiful periwinkle evening dress.
“Y/N,” he whispers once again, causing you to smile. “Mm?” “What kind of night are we going through?” He whispers with a smile, causing you to giggle and shake your head. “Hey… we are dancing in my living room, after a simple dinner, which happened after you were stood up.” You remark, causing you both to giggle. Here it goes.
“What if I told you I prefer this over any of the dates I’ve gone to with the other dames in town?” You were now looking up at him confused. “What?” “What if I told you, that… this dance of ours… makes me want something more?” You were now breathing heavily, heart racing more than ever as you shook your head in denial. “James… you’re not leading me on, are you?” You ask meekly, hoping that you were not making this up. “I’m not,” he whispers, “I’m saying this because now I know.”
“You now know what?”
A smile kisses his lips.
“A dame worth all the diamonds in the world. A dame that gives me all the happiness that I’ve been wanting for so long. It’s been here. It’s you.”
The tears had come back again, threatening to fall once again. “Oh, Buck… Buck…” You whisper, overjoyed with what you were hearing. Bucky was as overjoyed as you are, cupping your cheeks as his thumbs wiped your tears. “Oh, Y/N, sweetheart. What do you say? This isn’t the type of date I’d give. God, it’s a messy one tonight. But I promise, if you say yes, I’ll try to sweep you off your feet with each date we go on. Would you be my Valentine? Starting tonig- mmm.” He was quickly cut off as your lips gently sealed itself onto his, feeling himself burst with joy over and over again as his lips began to move against yours. They both danced harmoniously with one another, slowly and softly before you both pulled away to gasp for air.
“I hope that gave you the answer that you needed,” you whisper softly into his lips, beaming as you run your hands softly through his hair.
“That told me everything that I needed to know, my Valentine.”

would you be willing to drop a recipe for that bangin’ okra tomatillo curry? it sounds bomb
ok so heads up this is not much of a recipe- like, this is one of the things i make that i just sorta do whatever with. i’ve made it with paneer before and it fucking ruled. tonight, i might add some ground beef since that was hella cheap at the supermarket this week. who knows. i am pretty sure this is not faithful to, like, any cuisine. this is literally just me putting things in a pan and going “ehhhhh tastey and will not kill me probably.” absolute bachelor food. one pan, one utensil, cooks up pretty quick. i’m a mess. also spices in particular i don’t tend to measure because i am pretty okay at going
ingredience
oil (i use either olive or vegetable depending on which is closer to my hand at the time. it doesn’t really matter too much. maybe you could use butter. i’ve never tried. live your best life)
onion (chopped)
turmeric
tomatillos (however many the farmer at the market gives you. husked and rinsed so they’re not sticky. cut in quarters or eighths depending on the size of the tomatillo.)
okra (again, however much you have. this is why you gotta make friends with the farmers! slice it in bits of about a half inch or so but this is not an exact science)
tomatoes (about two decent handfuls worth. chopped.)
whatever hot peppers are on sale at the grocery. i think mine are serrano right now. (chopped.)
ginger (a wee bit. you can use fresh or ground.)
garam masala
how to do it
in a large skillet (my big frying pan is like 12 inches and not super deep and it’s usually a SQUEEZE, i’d use my wok if it wasn’t fucked up) heat about a tablespoon of the oil to medium. add in the onions and a decent amount of turmeric. cook them for about 5 minutes or so.
add tomatillos and okra. stir it up, cook that, stirring when you remember, until the tomatillos start to soften and it looks a bit more like a curry than a whole bunch of veggies. this can take 5-10 minutes depending on your tomatillos.
add in the tomatoes, peppers, ginger, garam masala, and about a quarter of a cup of water. maybe a bit of salt. stir, bring down to low heat, simmer until the okra is nice and most of the water is gone.
make rice or whatever. serve with rice or whatever.
that’s it, it’s relatively easy, tastes awesome, great for when i’m feeling low energy, and a good way to use the tomatillos i keep buying

a peralta guarantee
“I promise I’ll come home safe, Ames. That’s a Peralta Guarantee.”
(missing scenes from 7x08 - amy worrying about jake)
hUge thanks to johanna for inspiring this fic and helping when i had a lil breakdown halfway through
When he approaches her desk mid-afternoon with a decaf coffee and the white chocolate chip cookies she’s been craving from the bakery across town, she knows he’s either a) broken something, b) wants something or c) has bad news. She narrows her eyes suspiciously, detecting an excited bounce in his step which can only mean it’s b and c; he wants something she’s not going to like.
“Hey, babe,” he tries to play it cool, clearing a butt-sized space on her desk on which to sit. “I come bearing gifts.”
“What do you want, Peralta?” She cuts to the chase.
“Damn it, you know me too well,” he mutters. “OK, so, here’s the thing: Doug Judy’s gettin’ married. He invited me to his Bachelor Party this weekend and I know he’s a criminal, Ames, but I really wanna go. Like, so bad. Would you be cool with that?”
She conjures up a mental pro and con list. On one hand, Doug Judy is The Pontiac Bandit, known felon, committer of God knows how many crimes, an overall bad dude. On the other, he’s Jake’s friend, singer of the smush songs CD in the glove box of their car that they always forget to take out, giver of the Le Creuset pot she adores. He’s always been nice to her and—.
“Sarge?” Gary interrupts her decision-making process with a quick question about a perp he just brought in, snapping her back to reality. She’s a Police Sergeant, her job is to serve and protect the city they call home and as much as she loves cooking her mom’s beef casserole recipe in Judy’s awesome wedding gift, she has a responsibility to bring him in.
“I’m sorry, babe. I just think it’s a bad idea.”
His face falls, his disappointment coming through loud and clear.
“What were you expecting me to say? Ignore the million arrest warrants out on this guy, many of them submitted by you, so you can drink beer and go to strip clubs?”
“You’re right,” he sighs. “You’re obviously right. Man, being good at your job sucks.”
She nods in agreement. “Remember last month when I had to shut that binder store down for running a secret drug dealing operation out back?”
“How could I forget? You cried for three days straight.”
“They had the best binder collection I’ve ever seen!”
(It was actually what was so fishy about it. In four trips to buy pregnancy binders, she hadn’t seen any of the founding members of the Brooklyn Binder Babes blog — Mary Sue, Catherine, Margaret or Jane — once. And there’s no way a stationery start-up would attract such long queues without their recommendation. It was a pretty easy solve from there).
“The point is, you can’t go to a criminal’s Bachelor Party.” She pats his hand. “You’ll just have to come maternity clothes shopping with me instead. None of my jeans fit me anymore.”
“As much as I would love to, you can take Kylie. I’m going to the party.”
“What?” She double-takes. “Jake, did you not listen to what I literally just said? We’re cops. We cannot be friends with criminals.”
“But we can be friends with informants who have helped us catch numerous, even bigger, more dangerous criminals,” he says with that look on his face, the one he gets when he finds a loophole that he can use to his advantage. She recognises it from home videos Karen has shown her where, instead of tidying his room like she asked him to, seven year old Jake shoves everything under his bed and carries on enacting a police chase with his race cars. “Captain Holt has given him immunity before, so technically I should be able to go party it up with him in Miami!”
“Wait... It’s in Miami? Miami... Florida?”
It’s a stupid question, she knows. Of course he means Miami, Florida. It’s just... they both promised on the flight home that they would never, ever go back there. After everything that happened with Figgis and not knowing if they’d ever see each other again, a statewide travel ban seemed a good way to put it all behind them, focus on all their future moments together, not on all the moments they missed.
“This isn’t like last time,” he reassures her. “It’s only for a weekend and then I’ll be coming straight home for snuggles with you and —,” he lowers his voice to a whisper because they haven’t told anyone she’s pregnant yet, “the baby.”
Her eyes fill with tears and she bites her lip so hard to stop them overflowing in front of all her uniformed officers. It’s pretty clear that he wants to go and she never wants to be one of them wives who control their husbands’ every move. All she wants is for him to be happy. And if going to Doug Judy’s Bachelor Party makes him happy, he should go, no matter how much she hates the entire state of Florida. She agrees, on one condition: “You have to text me hourly updates to let me know that you’re still alive.”
“Don’t I text you constantly anyway?”
“I guess so,” she sniffs.
He lifts her chin so she’s looking him in the eyes. “I promise I’ll come home safe, Ames. That’s a Peralta guarantee.”
“You better,” she warns, tears suddenly flowing down her face at the thought of him not coming home, not being there to watch Property Brothers with her, not raising their baby and proving to everyone what a great dad he will be.
Used to her extra strength pregnancy hormones shifting her emotions from 0 to 100 faster than John McClane can say “Yippie-Ki-Yay, motherfucker”, he pulls her into a tight hug, careful not to crush the precious cargo that is behind said mood swings.
He strokes her hair and whispers that he’ll be home before she knows it and that nothing, not even the worst state in the country, will tear him away from her.
When it’s time for him to leave, she follows him out to the street and, after a brief argument over the fact he packed his bag before he OK’ed the trip with her and another hormone-induced cry when his cab shows up, reluctantly waves goodbye.
True to his word, he texts her before the car is even out of sight. Miss you already 😘.
--
Her phone buzzes periodically throughout the rest of the day.
In a meeting with Holt and Terry: flying on mark cuban’s dope ass private plane!!!!! ✈️
Cooking dinner: florida is HOT (not as hot as u babe, dont worry)
Doing her crossword in bed: g’night ames, g’night baby, love u both SO MUCH
She smiles, tells him she loves him too and braces herself for the barrage of drunk texts and selfies coming her way.
--
Sleeping without him sucks. The bed is cold, her pregnancy pillow is not as good of a cuddle buddy and she tosses and turns all night worrying about him, where he is, what he’s doing, whether he’s safe.
Her eyes finally slip shut around 1 am when her phone buzzes. Again. And again. And again.
She tries to ignore him, bury her head under her pillow and go back to sleep, but the messages keep coming thick and fast. She groans, giving up and unlocking her phone.
There are 47 new messages from him.
Forty-seven.
Her initial annoyance at being woken up quickly disappears as she scrolls through the thread. He’s mostly sent her random, meaningless emojis and keysmashes, interspersed with the odd “I love you”, “you’re my best friend” and “I’m thinking about you” that warm her heart. He mentions something about their proposal, about crying with Doug Judy, which obviously makes her cry too.
(Dumb pregnancy hormones).
By the time she reaches the bottom, he’s sent her 10 more.
She decides for her sake — and the sake of all of her officers who would have to deal with a tired, emotional pregnant lady — to turn off her phone and reply to him in the morning.
She returns her phone to her nightstand, settles back into a comfortable position and closes her eyes.
She lies motionless for what feels like hours, unable to fall asleep. She tries the breathing technique her brother David brags about constantly, counting sheep like little Matthew, even reciting police codes like Teddy used to go to sleep after sex. Nothing works. She’s still awake.
She turns her phone back on to see what Jake’s up to now, only to see his messages ended abruptly with a caterpillar emoji over an hour ago.
She immediately panics, dialling 911 into her phone.
Her thumb hovers over the green call button.
She’s heard thousands of crazy operator call stories, frequently reminded the general population to only call in a genuine emergency and watched the YouTube compilations for fun. She deletes the number, positive that if she told an operator her husband was missing because she hadn’t heard from him while he’s at a Bachelor Party, she’s positive she would be added to those videos.
In an attempt to stop her spiral, she contemplates the possible scenarios in which his constant texts would cease.
Scenario 1: He’s living in the moment and has put his phone away (something she has been encouraging him to do lately to reduce his screen time)
Scenario 2: He’s very drunk and has completely forgotten about his promise
Scenario 3: He used up all his battery texting her and his phone has died
Scenario 4: He’s fallen asleep (although a quick check of Trudy Judy’s insta reveals the party is very much still in full flow)
Scenario 5: Judy’s criminal buddies have killed him and thrown his body into the ocean
Once the thought pops into her head, no amount of squeezing her eyes shut will make the image go away.
Holt giving an emotional eulogy about wearing ties and being an amazing detective/genius.
Some rookie taking over his desk.
The sympathetic looks when she tells all the other moms in baby group that her husband died.
Usually Jake is there to hold her when her nightmares get bad. She rolls over, expecting to see his kind eyes and soft smile, the untouched side of his bed only serving to make her cry harder.
She can’t lose him. Not yet. Not until they’re old and grey, and maybe not even then. She spent so long denying her feelings for her dorky partner, rueing every missed opportunity to be together, and when they finally, finally took the plunge, she had never been happier. She can’t lose him yet. They have so much more life left to live.
She can’t lose him because he promised her he would come home safe. He guaranteed it.
She clings onto the tiny grain of hope like one might cling onto a raft in the middle of the ocean.
He would never break a Peralta guarantee.
--
Her phone finally buzzes again an hour later.
From: Unknown
Ames, it’s me, Jake. Judy’s buddies found out I’m a cop + destroyed my phone. So sorry I couldn’t text before. Hope you didn’t worry too much, although I know you probably haven’t slept. You can stop worrying now. I’m safe. Love you + see you tomorrow.
Love you too, she responds, yawning as she places the phone back on the side table.
Relieved that he’s OK, and exhausted from all the worrying, she falls into the easiest sleep she’s ever had.
--
Before she knows it, it’s the next afternoon, Jake’s keys are turning in the lock, he’s dropping his holdall on the floor and rushing to her side to kiss her all over her face.
“I missed you too,” she laughs, kissing him properly.
“Sorry it took so long — Doug and Trudy made me fly commercial —.”
“Don’t worry about it. You’re home now. That’s all that matters.”
“I’m never leaving you two again,” he swears.
“You’ll have to leave us eventually to go to the bathroom and stuff,” she points out, raking her fingers through the unruly curls that she so hopes their baby will inherit. “Just don’t go back there.”
A solemn understanding passes over his face and he nods. “Never again. Not even if our kid wants to go to Disney World. We’ll take them to the California one instead.”
“Smort,” she says, stealing his line and in an instant, that familiar grin is back.
“I love you.”
“I love you too.”
A dozen memories flood back, of oldies in short shorts and shuffleboard and Doug Judy getting away again. Of noice and smort and saying “I love you” for the very first time. Her eyes fill with tears — dumb pregnancy hormones strike again — as she buries her face in his shoulder.
“Let’s go to bed,” he whispers, pressing a kiss to the top of her head and lifting her bridal style to carry her to their room. He places her carefully onto the mattress and flops down next to her.
She snuggles into him, eyes closing once more. “Did we even get an invite to the wedding?”
“Not even close,” he sighs.
“Damn it. I would’ve loved to see that trainwreck.”
“You and me both, babe. You and me both.”

survey by zqrwrgnani
What do you typically have for breakfast? I skip breakfast Monday to Friday. On weekends either of my parents will usually make fried rice served with 3–4 of the following: eggs, hotdogs, corned beef, dried fish, ham, longganisa, and luncheon meat.
Where do you purchase most of your clothes? There’s a tiangge at the local mall where they will change up the collection of clothes being sold every couple of weeks. They have trendy choices at really low prices so that’s where I liked getting clothes back when I went out more.
Do you have any opinions on Anna Delvey? Literally have never heard of her. Should I know who this is...?
What are you currently streaming? I have an episode of (surprise!) 2D1N turned on, but it’s paused.
What do you typically order when you go for coffee? Iced caramel macchiato. I actually switched it up today and went for a basic iced mocha, though. Just wanted to try something new, I guess.
Anything you’re looking out for at the thrift? No, and I don’t usually make trips to thrift stores either.
Who are your favorite YouTubers? Louise Pentland is a recent favorite. There’s also Good Mythical Morning, Grace Helbig, and The Try Guys. I also like a ton of BuzzFeed people but I don’t think they count as YouTubers. I like a good number of local vloggers as well but they’re no one you would recognize.
Describe your skincare routine. I just splash some water onto my face first thing in the morning, every day.
What’s your typical morning routine look like? Work has conditioned me to automatically wake up at 6:30, and by then I have the choice to either go back to sleep or try to properly wake up by watching YouTube videos. Either way, I have to be up by 8 so I can start working. And like I said, I briefly wash my face, then I immediately head to my laptop. That’s it, really; it’s super uneventful and I'm sorry I can’t make it any more interesting lol.
Are you still playing Animal Crossing? I never bought the game, actually. I asked Nina if I should buy it and she said it probably won’t be suitable for me since the game requires a lot of creativity, which as y’all know by now I lack entirely hahaha. I have my eyes set on other games.
How has the pandemic specifically affected you? It kept me from having a memorable final year in university, and it kept me from having a graduation ceremony. We also had to sell one of our cars, which I really loved driving when we still had it, so that bummed me out. I believe the pandemic had also been a slight factor in the crumbling of my former relationship as well.
Where’s your favorite place to go for brunch? I never go out for brunch.
What’s on your nightstand? Right now there is a bunch of books on it and a paper envelope from work.
What do you think about before falling asleep? Anything except my already pending deliverables work for the following day.
What is your main source of anxiety? Continued from the previous evening. I don’t know if there’s a main catalyst...a lot of things have the ability to make me feel anxious.
Any bands or artists you’ve recently discovered? I’m going further down the K-pop rabbit hole as I know it, lmao. It’s starting, you guys. This week I discovered GOT7; I’ve only heard one song so far but I’m extremely hooked. Ravi’s also very talented and has catchy songs.
What are your goals for today? Have a great rest of the evening and enjoy the start of my weekend.
What kind of games do you play on your phone? I haven’t been playing a lot of games on it, actually. I mainly use it to keep track of my Viber notifications (because my laptop sometimes won’t, and I end up replying to some work threads late) and to watch on Viu. But the last game I downloaded was a logo quiz game for old times’ sake.
Are there any packages you’re waiting to come in through the mail? Nah, haven’t ordered anything recently. I think I’m over my online shopping phase hahaha. I was just really excited about it when I got my first couple of paychecks, but now that the initial thrill has passed, I mainly look forward to spending on food – exactly like how I predicted it would be for me.
Describe your favorite t-shirt? I’d neverrrrr throw out my CM Punk Best in the World shirt for the world, no matter how more tattered and stained it gets. It’s one of my prized possessions and it reminds me of a really happy and carefree time in my life.
Do you have a specific aesthetic? I don’t know if I fit into a certain one; I certainly don’t consciously try to. You’d have to ask my friends if I do have a specific kind.
Skinny jeans or mom jeans? Mom jeans, a thousand times over. I dread wearing skinny jeans.
What’s your favorite 90s cartoon? The Wild Thornberrys.
Describe the moment you realized you were falling in love with someone. I felt scared more than anything else. I’ve never felt such a heavy sensation before, so I didn’t know what was going on. I also felt the need to be around them as much as I can, as I was starting to love and enjoy their presence, and be the one to attend to their needs.
Have you tried the feta and tomato recipe? No but sounds delicious.
What’s your favorite sparkling water brand/flavor? I don’t drink that. Sounds nasty.
What’s your favorite makeup brand/brands? Don’t wear makeup, either.
What’s your all time favorite movie? Two for the Road.
What are some female names you would name a baby? Olivia, Mia, and Amelia are some of my favorites.
What about male? Erm, probably names like Mason, Elliott, Matteo, Liam...I don’t want a son, so I don’t think about boy names too often lmao.
Do you have any subscription boxes? No. I’ve always wanted to subscribe to one with a quirky concept, like a Korean-themed one, or international snacks or condiments, or curated alcoholic drinks, etc. but at the end I feel it’s a luxury I could do without.
What did you purchase the last time you bought groceries? The last time I got groceries was for work, and for that instance I got several of the following: coffee packs, soju, various canned goods, spaghetti set, Nutella, and toiletries.
What fictional creature would you like as a pet? Wouldn’t keep him as a pet but I feel like Maximus from Tangled would be such a fun dude to be around.
Describe your favorite piece of jewelry. I don’t have one. I love borrwing my mom’s Tiffany’s jewelry, though.
Have any local businesses closed that you’re sad about? So fucking many of them, especially the ones I frequented back in college. I went back to Katip last week and the place felt like a damn ghost town.
How do you feel about the BLM movement? I support it, of course. And I feel infuriated by those who try to counter by saying aLl LiVeS mAtTeR or worse, bLuE lIvEs MaTtEr.
What’s the worst advice you’ve ever taken? I don’t think I ever took an advice I knew was bad or would be useless or irrelevant to me. But this reminds me of my mom’s favorite piece of advice for every bad situation, which is to pray lmao.
How do you feel about your neighbors? I feel like I answer this a lot on this surveys, but I don’t think anything of them. We mostly keep to our own business.
What kind of dwelling do you live in? A house.
Have you been watching this season of The Bachelor? I’ve never tried watching it and have no desire to.
What’s typically kept in your purse/wallet? Paper bills, receipts I have the tendency to stuff and keep there even though I’ll never have to use them again, my Paramore ticket, TIN ID, copies of 1x1 and 2x2 photos of myself just in case I have to whip one out, driver’s license, my debit cards, and my vape.
How do you feel about TikTok? I gravitate towards the tutorials and unique prompts (like people showing their parents of different nationalities, the then-vs-now of their pets, etc) more so than the dance-y/meme-y ones. I’ve never felt the need to get the actual app, though. I get my TikTok fix on Facebook, which makes me feel old saying so LOL
What’s the hardest thing you’ve done/been through? Dealing through a breakup was surprisingly harder and more excruciating than deaths I’ve had to go through.
Did you/do you still have a Neopets account? I never had an account but I did have a Neopets game on my flip phone.
What do you look like on a day where you don’t leave the house? Haggard.
Do you have any opinions on Amberlynn Reid? Have literally never heard of that name.
Any current trends you dislike? Most streetwear.

#5yrsago Forgotten Foods: reviving weird old food and figuring out what should be brought back
Tumblr media
Meg Favreau writes, "I thought you guys might be interested in this column I've been writing for the last year-ish -- I scour old cookbooks for once-popular recipes that have fallen out of favor, explore the (often weird) history of the food, and provide a recipe.  Favorites include Welsh rarebit (the OG bachelor food, cooked in proto-microwave chafing dishes, and known for causing dreams so batshit that Little Nemo creator Winsor McCay did a long-running strip just about rarebit nightmares), beef tea (the chicken soup of its day, which tastes like hamburger water in the best way), and a Halloween about a booklet that juxtaposes candy recipes with testimonials about feminine ills (That ended up being posted on Table Matters' non-food sister site).

Top Korean Grocery Products in Dubai
Shin Ramyun began to pop up in drugstores, supermarkets, and even corner bodegas throughout Dubai. "Will you hold my place?" she said as she dashed out of line to purchase a couple packs of the things, flashing a smile at me as she returned with the red squares.
Family K Mart arrived in oud metha in 2015, signaling that Korean immigrants had truly arrived. The Italian restaurant where I had my first date with an old girlfriend became a Korean fried chicken restaurant the following year, and the neighborhood Blockbuster became a Korean bakery. In the predominantly white Georgia suburbs of Fulton County, Koreans were finally developing their own community—not simply a place to buy for groceries, but also a place to see friends, neighbors, and fellow Koreans.
Patel Brothers is to Indian immigrants in America what Family K Mart is to Korean immigrants in Dubai: a grocery shop, yes, but also a symbol of a moment in time and location when a cultural yearning for belonging gave way to venture finance.
1. Short-Grain White Rice
Tumblr media
It’s the first thing you’ll see when you walk in: a wall of short-grain rice options. My favorite brand is Kokuho Rose sushi rice—but just go for the cheapest. Fun fact: The packaging will all look Japanese, but that’s because most Korean rice is, historically, Japanese.
2. Kimchi
Tumblr media
Contrary to popular belief, most Koreans don’t actually make their own kimchi. It might be a seasonal activity for certain home cooks, but many just buy their everyday stash at Family K Mart. Even my mother! That’s because Family K Mart makes perfectly good kimchi, as long as you wait till it ferments before eating (usually a couple weeks in the fridge, or if you’re really impatient, overnight on the counter). There are many varieties: kkakduki (“Country Style Cubed Radish Kimchi,” the label might read), chonggak (young “bachelor” radish), and regular cabbage kimchi (with or without oysters).
3. Instant Ramen
Tumblr media
Again, Shin Ramyun is the go-to, but I often get Shin Ramyun Black, which has thicker noodles and an extra seolleongtang bone broth soup mix packet that adds nice depth. Or sometimes I opt for Ichiban (beef flavor) because it’s what my mom would cook for my brother and me after long days at the pool. There are so many varieties and brands of instant noodles at Family K Mart that are worth exploring. My cousin Becky goes to Family K Mart just to see what’s new on the shelf: These days you can get instant jjajangmyeon, jjamppong, and even carbonara-inspired ramen.
4. Roasted Seaweed Snack
Tumblr media
Also known as gim, seaweed snack is Korean-style nori that’s been brushed with sesame oil, salted, then roasted. We ate it as a side dish growing up, or as a vehicle for leftover rice balls in the morning. As an adult, I’ve learned to incorporate it into my recipes because I find that it adds a nuanced salinity that salt or soy alone can’t provide. You’ll find it in my avocado toast, deviled eggs, and even scrambled eggs. The Great Wall of Gim at Family K Mart is proof enough of this pantry item’s lasting importance in the Korean diet.
5. Korean Snacks, Chips & Candies
Tumblr media
My brother shops at Family K Mart for one thing and for one thing alone: the snacks. See below for a few of our personal favorites growing up: Goraebab, which translates to “whale food,” is an umami-packed tomato-flavored chip that’s dangerously good (1); Shrimp Flavored Cracker is a classic, and exactly what it sounds like (2); Sweet Potato Snack is a lovely sweet cracker studded with black sesame seeds (3); and Onion Flavored Rings are a cleaner-tasting Funyun (4).

the dining room is painted!
Tumblr media
the temporary garden fence (permanent will be wooden framed with wood posts)
Tumblr media
How are you?  I'm hoping the answer for each of you is "well" or even "great"!  Considering the changes we've all endured, we are faring very well around here.  Honestly, we are enjoying a bit slower pace.  Not that we want this to be a permanent thing but slowing down is good for our soul.  Rather then working 6-7 days a week we are pretty much sticking to 4 days.  And we know how lucky we are that our small business is even able to survive. It's been a hot one in this part of the world.  Hot and humid.  We do get a day or two reprieve weekly with a slight dip in temps or humidity so that's always welcomed.  Thank goodness for ceiling fans!  Ours go non-stop from June through September to keep that air circulating. Jay has enjoyed spending his extra time with his boat (and creating secret projects as a surprise for me like the harvest basket in the first photo).  He has a small 16 foot boat that he enjoys taking out fishing.  He's also been able to spend quite a bit of time fussing over it and making some improvements he's dreamed about.
As you can imagine, the garden is benefiting from my extra attention.  As I wrote last week, we built what looks like a miniature prisoner fence.  Not to hold the inmates in but to keep them out.  With woodchucks being the inmates, just to clear that up.  It's temporary and will be made permanent either this fall or next spring complete with wooden posts and a proper gate.  We have a TON of green tomatoes on the vines that I'm sure will all ripen at once.  That's ok, we are prepared!  We'll be oven roasting (with garlic & fresh basil) those we don't eat fresh to create a delicious simple sauce for freezing.  That has been our favorite sauce we've made to preserve so that's the only one we'll be preparing. We are planning on starting our food preservation this week.  My sister-in-law makes the BEST relish.  Thanks to the current pandemic we won't be traveling to visit with them this summer so she generously shared the recipe with us.  We'll be making and canning that and we have quite a few jalapeno's ready in the garden so we'll be canning pickled jalapeno rings as well.  We tend use them on everything so I'm looking forward to canning quite a few jars.  And my green beans are exploding - I am growing 3 varieties.  So freezing those weekly will be on the agenda for the next month or so. The next garden project on my to-do is that I'm planning to work on improving my soil.  I know that our 2 weaknesses in the garden are soil health and shade.  I feel pretty confident that I've figured out how to both work with the shade as well as make the shade work for me, so the soil is next on the list. A slower pace means I get to accomplish some things that I've put on the backburner.  For fun, I'm just starting an embroidery project that I've been wanting to work on and I took a few hours this past week to tidy up the blog.  The pages on blogger (i.e. recipes, etc.) can be difficult to set-up.  The photos don't always line-up and then sometimes when you add text, like the recipe name, it won't let it stay with the photo.  Ugh....  So, I messed around with it this week and decided to give in.  Instead, I figured out how to attach a drop down to my menu and decided I would work with creating multiple categories instead. You'll notice that when you're searching for a recipe, for example, you can click on the category and get to what you're looking for a bit easier.  I also broke up the "homesteading" category into our journey, helpful tips, making money on the homestead, chicken keeping, gardening, homemade home, and frugal living.  Again, trying to make it a bit easier for you to find the past posts you are searching for.  I also added a list of blogs that I visit regularly to the bottom right side.  These are blogs that remain traditional blogs and are very enjoyable to me.  I hope you find something new!
I painted the dining room a few weeks ago.  Yes!  That was successfully checked off of my to-do list.  The living room is next.  I've also added a few houseplants throughout the main living spaces.  In years past I haven't been so good with any greenery in the house.  I tend to forget about them....  Well, I almost lost one yesterday but was able to revive it.  Yup, I forgot about it.  With the air conditioning and fans going they dry out a bit quicker and I forgot to check on them this week.  A wilted sad plant caught my eye last night and I rushed it, and the others, to the sink for a much needed drink.  Today I'm happy to report that they are all looking happy and healthy. I've been making very simple meals these days and it's been wonderful.  Large amounts of raw or steamed veggies, legumes (or grilled meat for Jay), simple grains and a sauce makes a quick and delicious meal. I've also been coming up with new stuffed zucchini recipes since we are harvesting them daily.  Our favorite stuffing right now is sautéed onions, mushrooms, bell peppers, and corn mixed with chopped basil or cilantro, a teaspoon (or so) of the Mrs. Dash italian seasoning, 1/2 cup of veggie broth and either rice or millet.  Then I add some parmesan to Jay's and throw them in the scooped out zucchini that I've grilled to soften (you could also boil it or bake it).  I bake them for about 30 minutes, covered, and a few minutes uncovered and they are ready to go.  Jay also really likes one that is a mixture of onion, mushroom, tomato sauce, sausage, rice and mozzarella.  I add a bit of fresh basil from the herb boxes on the deck for a finishing touch. Lots of goodness happening around these parts.  I'm hoping you had a wonderful weekend as well!  Have you read anything good?  Started any new projects?  Done something for fun? Recipe Link Love:
My husband used to eat a TON of hamburger helper (in his bachelor days).  I decided to make this homemade version for him a couple of weeks ago and he LOVES it!  I substituted chicken broth for the beef broth and I've made it with ground beef as well as with ground turkey.  Both versions were a huge thumbs up!
I think if you have a collection of really good sauces you can make a ton of different great meals.  Lindsay's collection of 19 has some real winners!  We use her Peanut Sauce quite a bit - it's sooooo delicious.  My husband loves her Honey Mustard and I've recently used the Chipotle Tahini Sauce (minus the oil - I used some blended cashews instead) and it's another winner.  I can also recommend her Chipotle Cashew Queso.  I haven't tried it but it's incredibly similar to the one I make and love, so I'm sure it's delicious.
If you have an air fryer and have Fried Mozzarella Stick fans in your household, this is a recipe that is super simple and my husband adores!  (I had to reduce the cooking time almost in half)

What have you been up to today? Anything interesting? I decided to be a 14 year old again and watched video clips of my OG, ride or die, absolute favorite OTP this morning and I fangirled like it was 2012 lol. I haven’t revisited that ship in around six or seven years so it was surreal to see their scenes all over again and I was beaming all morning hahaha. Other than that, I do have a meeting in an hour but I find that more blah than interesting... WHYYYYY I volunteered for a shitload of extracurricular positions before this quarantine started, I’ll never know. What was the last thing you ate? My sister had found this bread recipe on YouTube last night and I loooooved what she made, so I asked her to make it again this morning. Do you know how to knit? Who taught you? We were taught in Grade 6 by our home economics teacher, but 1) I wasn’t interested and 2) kinesthetic learning has never been my forte, so I wasn’t able to follow from as early as step 1. What state or territory were you born in? Continued the day after, lol oops. I was born in Manila. Are you the type of person to dwell on the past? Only in such a way that I prefer to hold grudges, so on that front I’m technically perpetually dwelling on the past. I can get over other stuff relatively easily.
Are there many traffic incidents in your area? There’s a usual bottleneck spot three minutes away that gets really bad in the evening when everyone is trying to get home, but the traffic becomes a lot more loose when you get to the part of the highway leading to my village. What's your favourite genre of music? I vibe with R&B and some indie rock the best. Have you ever been for a ride in the back of a truck? No, I think that’s mostly illegal here lol. People usually ride the back of pickup trucks when they’re inside gated areas, but it’s a different story once they get to the highway. Are you currently downloading anything? Nope. I haven’t (illegally) downloaded a book since March-ish, and a movie since...2016, maybe. Have you seen any good movies lately? Tell me about them. Nah I prefer shows these days. The last good one I watched was Descendants of the Sun; it really lives up to the hype and is genuinely one of the better Korean dramas out there. It centers on a special forces captain and doctor and how their lives and respective careers intertwine in a war-stricken country. Does your father have any facial hair? He grows it but he shaves it off regularly. What's your favourite thing to eat for breakfast? Ideally it would be Eggs Benedict, but realistically I really like scrambled eggs, bacon, and fried rice. Did your grandparents teach you anything? My maternal grandpa was one of the smartest people I knew and from the second I was born he loved giving me little facts about every topic that could possibly exist, but especially about history and how things work or are made. My maternal grandma is super traditional and taught me more maternal and old-school stuff like how to be more ladylike, the different benefits of vegetables (like how carrot and squash are good for your eyes haha), and random facts about Christianity – basically stuff you’d expect from an Asian grandma lol. Because I didn’t really grow up with my paternal grandparents and since they’re a lot more reserved to begin with, I haven’t gotten the chance to learn a lot from them.
Do you want/have a Bachelor's degree? I want one and I’m on my way to getting it, but because of Covid the road to graduating has been slower than normal. The college has already decided and we’re only going to have an online graduation which really bums me out, and that’s gonna happen by late July. Have you ever written a song for or about somebody? I’ve never written a song, period. What are the longest and shortest romantic relationships you've been in? I’ve only had two stints and they’ve been with the same person. The shorter one lasted eight months, while the longer and ongoing one has been going on for four years. Would you go on one of those galactic space flights if you had the chance? If it was free, for sure. Do you like your license photo? Yes hahaha. The license people had a laugh once my card got printed out because I had a wide-ass smile on my face (the photographer said it was fine to smile, and he didn’t tell me off when I smiled with my teeth), and apparently that’s not normal at all because people would always choose to look stoic in their licenses. The amusement on their faces was funny to me and we ended up laughing together sksksksk. Are you into superheroes? Who's your favourite? I am not. I watched the Wonder Woman movie two years ago and that was really nice, but I’m generally not into superheroes. Spotify, Pandora or something else entirely? Spotify. The only Pandora we have here is the jewelry shop. What colours do you wear the most? I’d say black or mustard yellow. What was the last alcoholic beverage you had? I had a bottle of peach soju last Friday. How many televisions do you have in your house? How big is the biggest? Four. I dunno the dimensions of the biggest one we have but it’s pretty...big lol Have you ever been to Arizona? Did you like it? I have not. I like Arizona tea though :))) Do you have any exercise equipment in your home? Yeah we have a couple of dumbbells and my mom has a rowing machine thing. Are you a gossip-loving sort of person? Yes. Not the best trait of mine I gotta say, but it is a guilty pleasure. What brand of laptop or computer do you own or use most often? Apple. What did you have for dinner last night? We had some sort of Korean beef with vegetables. How old were you when you learned to tie your own shoelaces? The thing is, this was one of our exams in kindergarten, so I had to learn it to ace that test even though I’ve always been bad when it comes to hands-on learning. My grandma painstakingly taught me when I was five and she had to start teaching me weeeeeeks before the exam to accommodate how slow I am when it comes to lessons like that haha. Have you ever felt like you were making a mistake when dating someone? Certainly felt that way in the latter part of my first relationship. ^ Did you continue the relationship or end it when you realised? I continued it only because I’ve just never been the dumper type when it comes to relationships. I waited several months for her to realize so that she can do the breaking-up, but yeah those were several wasted months for me. When was the last time it rained where you live? Yesterday it rained hard all afternoon. Have you ever bought one of those 'As Seen on TV' products? Nope, but I like watching the commercials heheh. What brand are the shoes you last wore? Onitsuka Tiger. Do you think you look similar to your siblings? I do. You know how Snapchat has a filter that’ll show how you’d hypothetically look if you were the opposite sex? I’ve tried that out and my face just turns into my brother’s lmao, we look that similar I guess. My sister and I also look alike but much less - there are only certain angles where we do. Have you started watching any new TV shows recently? Mmm not yet. I have so many Korean dramas up on my queue – Crash Landing On You, Fight For My Way, Who Are You: School 2015, Legend of the Blue Sea, Itaewon Class, and Fated to Love You – but I take forever to start on any new series so idrk when I’m gonna start on one of these. When was the last time you sat in the back seat of a car? Around two weeks ago when my parents brought me to a nearby hospital to have me checked for my week-long fever. Are you good at answering random general knowledge trivia questions? I’m better than the average person, I’ll give myself that. Have you ever been obsessive over calories, exercise etc? No. What is your favourite shape of pasta? Fettuccine. Do you live to eat, or eat to live? Liiiiiive to eat. Have you ever played Cards Against Humanity? Did you like it? Yes, but just briefly and sneakily in my old school because Catholic school wouldn’t have tolerated a game like that haha. I found it funny, but I wouldn’t play it all the time. Are you going to work or school tomorrow? Not these days, chief. When did you wake up today? I was awake by 8:30. What is the time right now? 11:58 AM.

Bachelor Lunch Box: Ramen Holiday!
Tumblr media
Chained to the drawing board in my home office most of the day, I don’t spend a lot of time overthinking lunch.  And realizing there’s a world of clueless bachelors out there, just like me, I try to share my hard-won culinary c-ration survival tips.
Today’s installment of Bachelor Lunch Box is 7-minute Ramen Holiday.
All the ingredients you need are in the photo above.  They all meet my high nutritional standards of Fast, Easy and Cheap.  The Nissin Cup Noodles (I rotate chicken, beef and shrimp flavors) run 3 cups for a buck at Dollar General.  The Great Value Sugar Snap Pea Stir-Fry set me back $2.39 at Walmart, and lasts me for five lunches, so less than 50 cents a pop.  I don’t remember how much I paid for the Tabasco Sauce or the Kikkoman Soy Sauce, because they stretch so far, so pennies per serving, okay?  (Important Disclaimer:  I don’t get one red affiliate cent from these companies for the mention, dang it!  I shell out the bucks at the Walmart checkout like any other poor schlub.)
Now to prepare the Ramen Holiday:
Cook the cup of ramen according to manufacturer’s directions on the paper lid, and like the lid says, “DO NOT MICROWAVE CUP”.  (Pffffft!  I’m just messing with you, you KNOW you’re going to microwave it in the cup!).  Before you cook the ramen in the boiling water, add the Tabasco Sauce and Kikkoman to your personal taste.  (I don’t take any responsibility for pinches and dashes and fractions of teaspoons and such.)  Adding these condiments to the boiling stage cooks the flavors into the noodles.
After the noodles have boiled, pour them with the broth into a cheap (I’m all about it) 1 to 1-1/2 quart Rubbermaid Take-Along microwavable storage bowl. (They’re about 4-for-$3 at Dollar General, and you can use them over and over.)  Separate the noodles slightly with the fork you intend to eat with.  Do not pull out any fancy utensils that have to be washed later.
Now pour about 4 ounces of the frozen stir-fry vegetables on top of the noodles in the bowl. (Do I have to tell you not to dirty up a measuring cup? Four ounces is about a handful, add more or less to taste.)  Don’t stir the vegetables into the noodles and broth.  We want them to steam on top, not boil.)
Put the plastic lid loosely on the container.  This next step is common sense, but it’s a revelation from the Heavenly Host to us bachelors:  Pull off a two-sheet length of paper towels, and wrap them over the top of the bowl lid, so that the two ends sit under the bowl in the microwave.  This keeps the lid secure, so that no nasty exploding bean or carrot  launches the lid and contents all over the oven. Do this paper towel trick with every dish you cook, and you’ll never have to clean chili or spaghetti sauce off the walls again.
Stick it in the microwave, and cook on high for 3 to 4 minutes, depending on how crisp you want your vegetables.  (I’m not a Hitler about cooking times, either.)
When the dinger goes off, pull out the bowl, stir it together, and Voila! Ramen Holiday!
I know, I could have said just toss in a handful of frozen vegetables with your cooked ramen, but what kind of blog entry would that make?  You can use any frozen vegetable mix you like, but I prefer the stir-fry bag, because you get sugar-snap peas and water chestnuts along with your broccoli, green beans, carrots, yellow squash and peppers.
A couple of other variations:
The beef and the shrimp ramen cups are good with a dollop of bottled teriyaki sauce added at the frozen vegetabe stage (step 3).  If you add teriyaki, pour off about half the broth first, then stir the sauce in with the noodles before adding the frozen vegetables on top.  Steam it all for 3 or 4 minutes, as above.
You can also add cooked shrimp to the shrimp ramen mixture at the frozen vegetable stage (step 3).  This is a fancy-schmancy variation, though, because you have to rinse and thaw the shrimp before adding it,  Delicious, but doesn’t really earn the Bachelor Seal of Housekeeping for fast, easy OR cheap.
If you missed it, check out my earlier recipe for 8-minute Microwave Cornbread.
