8. train ride home.

S p r I n g b r e a k.

The train station is restless; couples and children run around in a frantic haze of smoke and screams, giggles, enthusiastic chatter. Some passengers bump into you and mumble hiss like apologies under their breaths without even sparing you a glance as they rush to their departing trains. Fumes stick to your skin. The sun rains down in harsh rays and it is abnormally humid and hot for Britain. Rainy weather and clouds are to be expected, but this… the baby blue of the sky is nearly blinding. The chaotic shouting and the near deafening sound of honks is disorienting. With your terrible health it is all almost too much. However you prevail and tilt your head upwards, quick eyes in search of the platform. Your suitcase and ticket are safely guarded in your grip. Finally, a miracle! You spot the far away number 8 and hurry to it, counting the minutes until your departure.

A line had already formed to your train and so you set down your things and wait patiently for your turn. Your hair sticks to the side of your oily cheek. Blasted weather! With a silent huff you fix your hair and try not to blush under the heat. Once your turn arrives you smile graciously at the young ticket checker, “Good day, miss.” He greets you with a sunny smile, his mood ten times brighter once a grumpy patron passed him, “May I see your credentials?”

“Certainly.” You are quick to rummage through your case and pull out a small passport. He regards it, and then you, reluctantly giving it back.

“Have a fantastic trip, (Name).” He wishes and curtsies his black hat. You nod graciously, “If I were to offer you my help in carryi—“

“There is no need for that.” A quiet, though stormy, voice cuts in and your heart skips a beat once Tom’s pale figure comes into view behind the boy. “She is with me.” He states simply, leaving no room to argue. The boy backs down and allows Tom to take your bag and your hand as he helps you into the train.

In a breath you are transported home, where trees are tall and their scent is dizzying. Bees buzz freely and butterflies dot surface of flowers; heaven like scenery all around you. And you are a small child again and so terrified of the woman with a permanent frown on her face holding a wooden spoon high above her head in a threatening manner that, you realise, if you were to make a wrong move pain would soon follow.

“No self-respecting lady holds hands publically.” Your mothers voice echoes loud and clear, “Are you of noble birth or are you a peasant?”

And despite being told from an early age what is right and what is wrong, you chose to ignore your instincts and block out her voice. Instead you relish in the way your hand fits perfectly in his; how safe and warm it is; how pleasantly it tingles and makes your whole body feel as if on a gentle cotton cloud. Tom does not let go of your hand till you reach the compartment.

It is small and old. The red seats are dulled, but still comfortable. Tom puts away your things – his is already tugged away somewhere – and as you sit you get a better look at him. He is missing his regular robes; without them he appears leaner and paler, yet still undeniably handsome. His clothes seem worn, but tailored, they are not new but you know he has been keeping them in the best shape he possibly could. He takes a seat next to you when the train jerks into motion. Soon rumbling spreads and vibrates your bones as the scenery behind the window moves into a colourful blur.

“It’s nostalgic, isn’t it?” He breaks the silence in a bored tone. Curiously, you tilt your head away from the window, “Reminds me of the first time we met.”

“The train to Hogwarts…” You agree, “Seems so long ago...” You add.

“But I knew.”

“Knew what?”

“That you are different.” He says and you can barely make out a smile on his lips. He must have expected you to relish at the idea, however your face falls.

“Do you hate me, Tom?” You ask. He thinks; his eyes trail off from your face to the outside view.

“In a way.” He admits, his gaze locking your own. “I hate what you do to me.” He says slowly, his fingers coming to graze the side of your forehead to push away some silky strands of (colour) hair, “I hate how reckless I’ve become…And how honest, too.” At this you blush; your cheeks tingle pleasantly as the warmth of his fingers linger. He pulls away, either to compose himself or to mind your personal space, though you doubt your comfort and wellbeing is on his mind. Alas, it feels as if a heavy weight is lifted off of your chest. He does not hate you. He has no malicious intent regarding you. It makes you smile, however your smile is small and a bit mellow.

“Tom…” You start slowly, curiously, thinking back on all that has happened in the past year, “Do you ever miss home?”

He regards you with a strange look, “I grew up in an orphanage.” A shiver rolls down your spine at his blank, emotionless tone, “There is nothing to miss.”

“Oh…” You murmur meekly, “I…I didn’t know.”

“Of course you didn’t.” He states, “How could you?”

You figure only professors know this. Come to think of it, it suddenly makes sense why he stays for Christmas and spring break in the castle, and seems so displeased once summer rolls around. You used to believe that it is because he despises the heat. Tom always seemed happier when it was cold and raining, or so you noticed. But now you understand and feel sad for him, though you try not to show it, knowing that he would not appreciate your worry. He just shared such a delicate secret with you. You cannot ruin this moment with your unruly affection.

“I don’t miss my home, either.” You say gently.

“It’s because of your mother, isn’t it?” He inquires; again, his tone betrays only polite curiosity, as if he already knows the answer to his question. You nod.

“She is a…difficult woman.” You start, “But I do not blame her. I was a difficult child…I also don’t blame my father for not being there to stop her.” You glance out the window – fields of green are coated in a happy yellow colour; lacy bright wildflowers, “See he is the only alchemist in our town. We live quite far from it, and the trips back are long and tedious… We live in the woods in a small cottage surrounded by flowers and moss and fireflies at night…”

“Sounds idyllic.”

“It is merely a pretty font.”

The conversation lulls to a stop as both of you are lost in your own separate thoughts, until… “I’d like to visit it sometime.” He says, making your heart skip in delight. He smiles, “Meet your mother. Do the same thing she did to you.”

“You mean the same thing you do to me?”

You wonder why you do not hate him. Not feel a burning desire to escape, or even feel better. Perhaps it all starts and ends in that small cottage in the woods. Perhaps, this pain he inflicts, others inflict, you inflict upon yourself with those memories you repeat in your mind, are home. Perhaps you are simply used to fear and anguish and it would make you feel terrified if he were to act a different way. This pain is comforting, nothing new. Changes are a terribly scary thing, and you despise them. More than that, you could not hate him. Your heart betrays you. The way it beats for him and him only. The night he told you that he wants you to join him on his little quest…You were hurt and shocked but that all melted away the next morning. You had thought long and hard. You had weighted the possibilities and decided that his side was the only place for you to be, despite the circumstances, despite the pain. Yes, you do not hate him, quite the opposite in fact.

With a smile you turn away, not waiting for his answer, if there even was one, “What shall we do in Little Hangleton?”

“Find out the truth.”

I'll explain a little more. I own a duplex which I rent out the top of while my husband and I live down stairs. The renters upstairs have been my friends for a long time and they needed an apartment so we rented to them for $535 a month. After a year we agreed to trade daycare for rent so I could go back to work full time. The arangment has gone from no cash exchanged to us paying their car insurance ($90/month) the water bill ($50/month), the hot water ($35/month), an extra $190 in cash per month along with the no rent income ($535/month). We also give them about $60 in random cash when they ask for help. I provide the formula, diapers and wipes and she provides the food. The kids are upstairs from 11am to 5:30pm and she refuses to take them earlier even though if she did I could get a better schedual. I trust the woman and her son is the same age as my oldest. But there are also some serious disipline issues too. (My four year old now says bad words.) I need some advice

Everybody’s getting numb

I breathe in the fresh air of the winter. It’s been two and a half months since the games started. 20 people are left. I’m numb, but not from the cold. Death no longer bothers me.

June really changed me, I suppose.

Everybody’s on the run

My breath escapes in short gasps as I try to, yet again, escape. The snow storm helps, but not by much. As if by magic, snow starts to fall even heavier. My breaths get more laboured, but I quickly find a place to hide. I crouch in the small hole, and watch my pursuer runs by me, the thick blanket of snow blocking a lot of vision.

I pull out my gun, pointing at my pursuer. My smile changes into a smirk, as I pull the trigger.

Blood splatters against the earth.

I bandage my wounds yet again. Its almost a regular occurance, to check for injuries. But they’ve slowly been becoming more infrequent. My phone vibrates.

Mish? Odd name. But why does it matter. I now know my next victim.

My knife flashes at the same time her gun fires.

I smirk, wiping my knife as I walk away. I take a moment to look at the bullet hole, just a bit away from where I was.

Good thing I’ve got hearing protection, jeez that could’ve been bad.

Johnathon keeps following another guy. Two birds with one stone. Or more accurately, one bullet. Or knife, whatever works.

I approach them, silently. I hear Johnathon talking with this mystery person.

“… this is a freakshow! Have you seen the stats on some of these people? We’ve gotta get outta-”

Oh. Look at that. My kills incressed by two.

I stare at the fire consuming another building. It caught fire while I was following my next kill, while they were inside. I will most likely get the kill, as I chased him inside after the spark started, but it was all luck.

I keep an eye out for people following me as I get some food from money I got from the bodies.

I sharpen my knives, keeping an eye out for people chasing me. Its been almost a week without a kill. But we’re almost at the final ten. That makes sense.

I watch the news for a few seconds before getting a vibration.

I stand outside a party. The music loud enough to shake me where I stood. Alex is in there.

I steel my nerves, and enter the building.

I slide down the railing, before flipping off and pulling out my gun to fire back. People were screaming, but Alex and I had steel nerves at this point. But we didn’t try and attack the bystanders. To much confusion.

We watch each other, muscles coiled up, ready to spring into action.

The lights went out, and the real chaos began.

I hid in the kitchen, occasionally poking my head around to catch glimpes of him. The ambulances outside illuminated the house. I had to end this soon.

I kicked up, and started running around the kitchen.

He came looking for me.

I run upstairs, the pounding of the police in my wake. I caught a glimpse of a camera, and gave it my best smile. Then I kicked down a door, shot a window, and jumped into the night.

I slide under benches as police helicopters moniter my movement. I head underground, bullets flying. I holster my gun, and try my best to blend into my surroundings.

They ran past me. After all, I wasn’t even there, as far as they knew.

By the time they circled back, I was long gone.

I banged my knee against a ledge, cursing under my breath. But I kept running, trying to evade my tracker.

My breath was uneven as I slid behind a sign, and under it as they came around. I ran, staying out of sight.

After all, my sponser taught me how to get away. I’m quite good at it at this point in the games anyways.

I watched as two people were fighting. I was in a fighting club of sorts, more like an illegal brawling stadium. Their moves were predictable, and I watched them easily. I could fight and win this. But that wasn’t my goal. Just some R&R before the big fights. But of course, I got pushed into the pit.

I jumped and ducked and won round after round after round. I was grinning, the excercise welcome without the threat of death following me. I saw some cameras again, this was something that most didn’t do. But I wasn’t most, so who cares. I certainly don’t. And neither does my sponser if they chose me of all people.

So I kept on fighting.

I ran to the city center. Thats where most of the final 10 battles happen. To my left is the old church, and around me are a bunch of shops and a few houses. The intersection is closed. The police won’t get involved. The game masters will make sure of that.

The police had their chance. So now, its mine.

I think back to her. The only reason I’m here.

I crouch in a tree, using the leaves to cover me. I get all of my weapons ready. This is a fight to the death, and I’m not going to lose to a bunch of selfish assholes.

I take a deep breath as my phone vibrates.

I whisper along with the message that everyone gets.

“Final battle. Begin.”

I look inside of myself, And try to find someone else Someone who’s willing to die, Instead of watching you cry for help.

I smirk as gunshots echo across the square. I back into the tree, watching both below and around me. If someone finds me too soon, then I’m, well, fucked.

Just my luck, someone tries to climb my tree. But they are gunned down before they see me. I thank Lady Luck for being on my side, and continue to wait my battle out.

I know that blood will be spilled, And if you wont, then I will. My grave will never be filled, It’s either kill or be killed.

I slide down my tree, shooting my gun at anyone who even twitches in my general area. The guy who started to climb my tree fell limply to the ground, face mangled by my gun. I hold my gun in one hand, a knife in the other, and start moving. Staying still will kill, after all.

I crouch in front of the stained church, firing rapidly at the approaching woman. As soon as she gets close, I duck and spin, leg out to trip her. She jumps, and I swing up, trying to get her with my knife. She dodges, getting a small cut, and a quick battle commences.

I keep on asking the question, “Can I be saved by confession?” You see this blood on my hands at least there’s no reaching to Heaven.

I duck and slide, swinging up to try and get her back. She dodges, and misses another bullets. Another person joins the fray, and we all move together in a deadly dance, where one misstep will cost our lives.

I got to pick up the pieces, I got to bury them deep And when you look into my eyes I’ll be the last thing you see

I swing, duck, kick, jump, and bounce, trying to throw my enemies, but they match my moves and throw their own into the dance.

I growl, throwing the boy off a bit. I swing at him the same time the girl swings at me. I dodge and swing my blade in a circle, keeping the blade moving with my body, an extension of my hand.

His body flops to the floor, limp like a rag doll. I jump over his body, and lightly bounce away from the growing pool of blood.

Words turned into blood, and the blood keeps on pouring, From every pour I wipe it up, cause this just could be the moment

She slips on the growing pile of blood, and I use the very same blood to slide behind her and stab her in the back. Within seconds, I’m moving again, covered in blood. I stay on the grass, hoping that it would help get rid of some of the blood decorating the bottom of my shoes.

Now someone gotta die and now my only opponent ‘Cause I won’t watch my baby cry, So I keep on just going.

I spring away from an attack, landing on my hands to do a flip. I repeat, the man swinging at me with no mercy. Not that I would expect any.

Am I a man or a beast, Its mother nature at least Watch humanity cease, Cause it’s our human disease.

I land on my hands, and twist my body near the ground, hitting the back of his legs and sending him sprawling to the ground. I jump and land on his gut, before standing up and stomping his face in with my shoe. To finish him off, I pull out my gun and fire twice into his skull. Then, I’m on the move again.

There are two people left, and I stand back, watching them fight. I bounce on my toes, catching my breath. This will soon be the true final battle.

Cause I’m an angel, a demon. Yeah I’m hell and I’m heaven I’m everything you couldn’t be, now you believe in the devil.

The girl strikes down her opponent, her hands covered in just as much blood as mine. Not giving her time to react, I rush forward. I see the terror in her eyes right before I kick her into the building behind her, destroying the window.

I got to pick up the pieces, I got to bury them deep And when the dirt hits the coffin Just go to sleep.

I jump into the building, landing in a roll to dodge her attack. I raise an arm to deflect her punch, and we get into the final fight.

I lean back to dodge her knife, and swing my own in return. She blocks, and I duck around her, going for a stab. She turns and jumps at the same time, bringing her leg up to smash down on my wrist. I leap and roll, turning upwards to catch her wrist.

I push her away, using my feet to give me more strength. I jump up and flip back, dodging a swing. I kick up, balancing on my hands. She dodges, swinging her blade with her turn.

I twist and kick, catching her wrist. She stumbles a bit, but recomposes herself as I get up and lunge. She pulls on my hair as I wrap my hands around her neck, gripping as tightly as I could.

She stops fighting. I lean back and pull her up. She gasps weakly, giving me a glare. I give her a sickly sweet grin, and I grab her shoulder and head. Then I snap her neck cleanly, and she flops to the ground.

I stand up, gasping slightly. I stumble over to my knife, and pick it up, before heading outside.

Another life, goes into the night. I couldn’t let him breathe, ‘Cause I didn’t wanna die

I walk around, checking the numbers and making sure they’re dead.
