JFM abandons Wei Ying near of the Jin sect, away, far away of Lotus Piers, in the hope that his wife never find him. (near of the JIN sect).

Madam Jin is first :/ but then learns who is the child, who are his parents and the kid speak about Uncle Jiang who takes him from the street and who, one month later, take him in this city and ask him to wait here until he comes back.

Madam Jin is internally cursing JFM. she understands YZY didn't want to see the child of the woman that her husband loved (+ the theories of WY being JFM's bastard) but she is a mother too and learning that JFM gave a home to a street sad child for one month, giving him the illusion of love and home, for 4 weeks before abandonning him.

She rejects the bastarsd children of her husband too but they have still their mothers.

Couldn't JFM find him a family? Had he need to leaft him in the street, where he could die a sickness, of hunger or because of some bad men? Had he need to be THAT cruel? With a family, the kid would have been away, and if YZY didn't want him to Lotus Piers as disciple, then he could have find him a family at Gusu or near or the Nie sect, away of Lotus Piers.

Constantly thinking about how WWX thinks about JC how he thinks JFM thought about YZY but mostly as how he denied and yet carelessly commented JFM thinks (disregards) about JC

It is so, so, so fucked up and one of the reasons why chengxian is so doomed by the narrative bc no matter what JC does or says, WWX already "knows" what is about. Bc JC is his shidi and WWX knows best. And still, pre masacre, pre core exchange, it could have work. It could have, because they love each other so much but JC lost his core. WWX thinks he chose his parents. He thinks Jc choose the dead bodies of his parents, a filial duty, over survival, over him. And he never forgave Jc for it.

Bc now is WWX turn to assume the consequences of his shidi actions, now it is his turn to bear the pain for him. And he does not do it with reluctance, he does not, he does it bc he loves Jc so so much, but still. Still. The hurt it caused it. The hell it send to him. The hopelessness.

And then to see his shidi thrive were he can’t no longer. To see him shine when he is but a shadow. To see him reach for the impossible time and time again as if it was not WWX who never gave up before, who rallied his shidi over his (small, imagined, greedy) woes. To see all that and know envy, envy he had denied his whole life and envy he will repress into resentment, into sth useful bc WWX is not like yzy or Jc he is not, he does not hurt the ones he lives with his jealousy and sense of inferiority. Bc how can he not envy, when one says his dad doesn’t love him but he still has a dad? When one says he is not enough for his sect when he has such a inheritance, such a clear path at life. And WWX never cared never ever ever, how could he? He loved his shidi best, in spite of all the bad things.

And somehow, Jc himself is a thing he has to be loved in spite of. And it’s heartbreaking.

I'm not saying that WWX/JC's communication style is the exact same as JFM/YZY, but I certainly see WWX's communication style being similar to JFM, and JC to his mother; with that said, though, this does not take away the fact that JC is also his father's son and do share many traits as his father. But how WWX and JC were raised, and especially considering which "parental" figure they were more comfortable with, they certainly reflect it in how they communicate and this results in a catastrophe.

(This does not include the trauma and other outside issues that impacted WWX and JC's relationship, but it was interesting to see how their relationships fell out because of just how bad and insistent they both were in refusing to say what they actually want to say.)

one thing that always bothered me and confused me about mdzs is why Wei Wuxian and Jiang cheng were pitted against each other so strongly. Bc even if you take into account that people would assume wwx was a bastard of jfm, in the narrative its something that is common? Or at least in terms of the Jin, there were bastards flying all over the place but I don’t remember there ever being competition about who would be the sect leader, it was always Jzx until he died. So idk if I missed something or I’m misremembering but it honestly feels like most of the pressure came from the fragile relationship between the Jiang parents and less about what society thought. Also favoring Wei Wuxian is one thing but jfm never gave any implication that he was being favored as the next in line, as shitty as his favoritism was. It just makes me feel sad that both boys were under so much pressure for absolutely futile reasons at the end of the day. Like was jc’s cultivation that bad?? I don’t think so?? And even then if he was less talented than wwx it wouldn’t matter bc he’s still the heir. It would be insane if jfm just decided to break convention over talent bc of some sect motto. And I don’t remember there ever being a requirement to be an outstanding amazing cultivator to be sect leader. If that was the case then there would be no hereditary structure to succession, and jfm wouldn’t even be on the roster? Neither would jgs. There was never any importance on their ‘talents’ so wtf was the problem.

Also what was the timeline on Wei Wuxians conception bc he and Jiang cheng were born like a week apart at least at most one year and it seems like wwxs parents were not even at lotus pier since they left to wander together. I feel like that would clear a lot of things up tbh. bc I don’t think jfm capable of finding csr on the road and conceiving wwx and then coming home to yzy and conceiving jc, and csr wasn’t even a yunmeng jiang cultivator it was wcz?? So what was the overlap. Like did jfm get wcz pregnant or what?? Were they regular visitors to lotus pier? To me it read like jfm was a great friend and leader to wcz and admired csr but I read it a while ago so idk. It’s not helped by the fact that jfm doesn’t seem to favor yzy more than is necessary at least outright, and we all know she ain’t the most attentive either. So basically jc and wwx were brought into the world into a weird and fucked up long distance foursome situation and spent their entire youth suffering under the second hand feelings of their parents.

my otp tbh. i mean, i wrote an entire fic series about an alternate universe where jgy lives, just so i could keep them together. i think that answers that question lmao. but no, like, you don't understand. these two are such a tragedy: they love each other so deeply, yet are kept apart by duty and circumstance, and lxc is someone who jgy is probably the most honest with - but he still withholds - and him withholding from lxc is the one thing that lxc cannot forgive. so when guanyin temple happens, and lxc finds out the truth, he feels betrayed and rejected and like everything between them was a lie and god, he thought that he knew jgy better than anyone else. he thought he was the exception. but jgy can't afford exceptions. can't afford to let anyone too close. experience has taught him to keep people within arm's distance but no closer than that and lxc had thought he was the exception but he wasn't. except that he was - in jgy's eyes - because jgy had never allowed himself to hope for love, to be loved, before lxc.

lxc wanted to know jgy - even the monster bits - but jgy thought he had to wear a mask in order to be loved by him. but lxc just wanted him, darkness and all.

ohoho i mean, i love the concept of chengyao as like "two men who are bad at emotions are thrown together by force to help raise this child together" and i just, like to think that over the years, jc had grown to respect - maybe even admire - jgy for his resilience and persistence. b/c those are two traits that jc values highly - and he knows what it means to be resilient and persistent and to build something from scratch. so he admires jgy, and jgy grows to admire jc too, because he sees the way jc had rebuilt his sect from the ground up and how he holds his own against other sect leaders and - there might be a little bit of jealousy there.

so they respect one another, and they have this kid they have to raise together, so they do their best. and maybe jc thinks jl likes jgy better, so there's some hidden resentment, and maybe jgy thinks jc is too harsh on jl, so there's judgment. and they never see eye to eye, but they do their best - for jl.

but then guanyin temple happens and jgy puts the garrote around jl's neck - his own nephew - and jc loses every ounce of respect he has for jgy. even if all of his other atrocities didn't seal his fate - him using the garrote on jl did it for him.

but man. before all that - these two raising jl together?? peak comedy. 100/10 never getting over it. they are a small, broken family but jc and jgy are both tenacious as hell and like hell they're gonna let this boy suffer like they did. that's why jl is so spoiled rotten - b/c jgy and jc just can't stand to see him suffer.

oh anon. you just opened the floodgates. what can i say about chengxian, the twin prides, the two brothers who have always been at odds, yet refusing to let each other go?

chengxian is the most tragic ship in the entire show. we watch jc and wwx grow up together. we see their brotherhood and their friendship. we see how loyal and dedicated and fond they are of one another. but we also see the cracks and fissures between them: the way jfm dotes on wwx and the parallel hatred yzy has for wwx; the way jc always felt responsible for wwx; the fact that jc may have been wwx's superior in title but everyone who saw them knew wwx was smarter and stronger ; and the resentment that dug its way inside jc's chest and made him bitter.

but jc had always thought - believed - that wwx would choose him over everything else - except maybe jyl - and he clung to their brotherhood like a lifeline. he thought wwx was his ride or die.

but then the wen's destroy the jiang sect. they kill jc's parents. and jc blames wwx for everything - but still, even then, he sacrifices himself to save wwx, and they tear out jc's core (and wwx saves him too late and sacrifices his own core to save jc but jc doesn't know this until years later and its too late and everything is festered and ugly between them) and the wen's throw wwx into the burial mounds and he thinks wwx is dead and that it was all for nothing.

wwx goes to the burial mounds - and that, that changes things entirely. it changes wwx, b/c now he's coreless and weak and he's had to survive.

and then they meet again - after jc spends months with someone he hates just looking for his brother, clinging to some shred of hope that he's still alive - and wwx is different. but they still try to act like everything is the same; that nothing has changed. except that everything has.

and then wwx chooses the wens. he chooses the wens - the very same sect who murdered their family - over jc. over family. and something inside jc finally breaks.

he gives up on wwx. gives up on their brotherhood. meanwhile wwx has been begging him to let him go this entire time. and he thinks wwx doesn't care when it's the farthest thing from it, because all wwx wants is for jc to rebuild his sect, and being associated with wwx will only destroy them.

but, these two are Class A noncommunicators. they sacrifice everything for each other time and time again, without any thought to what the other one wants, and if not for wn, wwx would have died holding onto the core secret (edit: hell, he fucking DID in his first life); just like jc will probably die without ever telling wwx that he was the one who distracted the wen guards. that he was the domino that led to all the broken things between them.

this...has gotten impossibly long. but i'll end with this: jc and wwx will never stop loving each other. beneath all of the layers of resentment and bitterness and hatred, there is brotherhood and love and care.

they may be too broken to be fixed in their entirety, but a broken vase can still be glued back together.

Was thinking about Jiang Cheng last night, and what I understood of his character– and especially of his relationship with Wei Wuxian, because obviously, every aspect of his character is shown through the lens of their relationship owing to the fact that Wei Wuxian is the main character.

I don't think it's a bad thing, but I do wish that we could have got some serious in-depth of a lot of characters from their own perspectives, but it works for me and my overactive brain to fill in the gaps.

I genuinely feel heartbroken over their relationship because I know that the love is there, and always will be. Even if it's now tainted with too many harsh words and spilt blood, the love is still there. The problem lies in how Jiang Cheng was raised.

At first, I used to think that Jiang Fengmian and Yu Ziyuan are not that bad of parents but after thinking over it, I have realised that they are not good either. In fact, when it comes to Jiang Cheng, they did a terrible job. JFM essentially neglected JC because of his similarity to his mother, leaving him craving for love. YZY on the other hand, constantly put him down by comparing him to WWX.

Both of these things became a core part of how JC thinks and feels. He never received unconditional love from his parents, and his relationship was strained with WWX, but he still loves them all. He is a classic Slytherin, in my opinion. He is definitely ambitious and loves his cultivation but another thing that I characterize Slytherins by is the difference in which they treat those inside their circle and outside their circle.

So, for JC, the people inside this circle are: JFM, YZY, WWX & JYL (and afterwards JL, but that's inconsequential to this post since I'm focusing more on the JC before WWX's resurrection). Even if they treat him badly, he loves them to death. He would go to the world's end for them, and all he wants in return is for them to be by his side.

Which is what WWX fails to do after the Wen situation. (I'm not blaming him, I totally support WWX's decision; I'm just painting it from JC's pov.) At a time when he had lost his parents and JYL was getting married and going away, the only tether for him was WWX– so when he chose the Wens (outsiders, for JC) and demonic cultivation over him, it was betrayal for him.

I believe there are 3 feelings that ruined their relationship, from JC's side: ① betrayal ② jealousy ③ loneliness.

The feeling of betrayal ties in to the loneliness heavily. At the root of everything is the fact that JC struggles with love; he loves deeply, but doesn't quite know how to express it at times because his own parents were lousy at doing that. (I wanna give him a tight hug so bad ugh.)

The jealousy... Well, that's the factor that ruined it the most. And I believe that if only JFM had looked past the fact that JC's mother is YZY, and had loved him as freely as he did WWX, and if YZY had not constantly compared them, then JC could have grown up without the compulsive need to constantly compare himself to WWX. It's not that he does it on purpose, but something that's wired in him because of the glaring difference in them that his parents keep pointing out, whether it's with his actions or her words.

The thing is... WWX was literally the worst person to compare himself to. He was literally a genius, a prodigy, a once-in-a-generation kind of cultivator. And also a classic Gryffindor example. Brave, reckless and strong sense of justice. That's what marks the main difference between them.

JC would choose his family/inner circle over justice. WWX would choose justice over his family/inner circle.

Those feelings of betrayal, jealousy and loneliness come out in the form of misplaced anger and hatred in the 13 years WWX is gone on every person who does demonic cultivation. I feel like JC was trying to find him too, but it was in equal parts love and equal parts hatred.

The point in the climax when he gets angry at WWX and mocks him about how good he is, and constantly better than JC that he even gives away his golden core– that scene hurt me so much. I was really upset with him, but well, his words struck me. Even now, he is still comparing himself to WWX. He has always tried to catch up to the image of WWX, in hopes of gaining his mother's pride and his father's love and even long after they are gone, he feels the need to prove himself to the rest of the world that he is Jiang Cheng. He is Jiang Wanyin, heir to the Yunmeng Jiang clan and worthy of leading them.

It's literally no secret how much he despises that everyone sees him as someone 'not Jiang like'. Their motto doesn't match him. But WWX does. WWX gets his father's love freely. WWX is the talented cultivator that everyone praises and sees, and it's never him. Never JC.

He spent his entire life trying to catch up to WWX, then chasing him in hatred, only to realise that he never could. No matter what he did, he would never measure up to WWX. And he is grateful, he is thankful for what WWX did, but it came out in the usual way all his feelings do: anger and derision. That scene hurts, but it made me finally understand JC.

Honestly, my biggest takeaway from all this was that JC deserved better parents. I love him and I love WWX and I want their relationship to be better desperately but knowing that with all that has happened, I also know it's going to be really really hard. I still want to believe in my own hc that post-canon, they sit down and talk like mature adults and get all this out of the way.

Be the brothers they always should have been, even if they can't be the Twin Heroes of Yunmeng anymore.

Edit: And I just want to add that JC never needed to compare himself or 'catch up' to WWX. That's where his parents failed him. Nobody telling him that he is enough and wonderful and loved as he is. I would love to jump in and just, give him a tight hug and say all these things to the younger JC. That I'm proud of him. That's he's enough.

Did I just read a post that calling YZY, that abusive purple bitch, a good leader? The YZY decided to slap and humiliate WLJ because the dumb bitch mentioned putting supervisory office at Lotus Pier, but then failed to silent the bitch forever to stop her from releasing the signal for Wens to attack, which would have bought more time for the Jiangs to defend and retreat? Uhm, all I see is irrational and dumb decision from the YZY's "good" leadership skill.

Also, what the fuck with "JFM didn't even try to show love and care to JC"? Did they collectively ignore his bitch of a wife sabotaged his relationship with his son by constantly yapping "JFM loved WWX more than his own son"? Uhm, JFM at least carried JC around 5 times, unlike YZY who only ever hugged him when she was about to die. There were no where in the novel showing YZY did any parenting besides comparing JC to WWX and reminding JC that JFM didn't love him (again full of crap). Comparing to JFM, there was literally a passage indicating JFM tried to guide and discipline JC to be a good leader and adhere to the Jiangs' motto. Again, too bad his bitch of a wife did everything to make sure JC adhere to none of the Jiangs's teaching.

Also, JFM was the one get the puppies for JC because his son couldn't make any friends, until he brought back an orphan from the street to become new playmate for his son.

If YZY didn't know how to express love to her son, fine, though that still landed her at "bad mom" category. But to gaslight and manipulate your own son that his daddy didn't love him enough when the dad actually spent quality time to teach him to be a good person due to your petty and imaginative jealousy？LOL, that is an acme of terrible parenting right there.

Me, in my XY feels after rewatching Yi City last night: Let me check the character tag for some nice content about him

Me, while checking the character tag: *sees the most misguided takes about his character, incl. one where OP genuinely believed he would still be the bloodlusty, revenge-filled monster, even if he'd grown up in security like WWX without going through the trauma of losing his finger*

Do I think he likely would have grown up with resentful feelings toward YZY if she'd whipped him growing up? Sure, if that had been the case, but I don't think she would have resented him enough to do so.

Why, you ask? Because the main reason why JFM was so attached to WWX and YZY felt so threatened in regards to JC's neglectment was because of his history with WWX's parents, especially his mother. XY has no relations to WWX's parents, has no history with the Jiang clan, thus YZY would have had no reason to treat him the way she treated WWX.

Ergo, his growing up with them likely would have been very peaceful for the most part and he probably would have grown up loved, sheltered and a lot more emotionally stable. Can I imagine him being quick to anger? Sure, but not necesserarily out of his own volition but by osmosis of having grown up with YZY (whose character traits also heavily influenced JC). He and JC might have ended up pretty similar, but not necessarily.

It was never that XY had no sense of justice, his sense of justice was just always inflated and self-centered. No one, and I mean NO ONE, was looking out for him and his safety and comfort, so him looking out for himself first by whatever means necessary was a natural consequence.

He was abused by pretty much everyone he ever met (he himself said he was ALWAYS beaten up by everyone) UNTIL Xiao Xingchen saved his life in Yi City. That was LITERALLY the first time anyone had ever shown him genuine kindness in his life.

"And he thanked him by using his blindness against him, bla bla bla, so that's proof that he always would have been a monster even if people were nice to him, wah wah wah" I'm sorry, but did you miss the part where he'd already been through 20+ years of trauma at that point??? You really, genuinely think that a XY who had never gone through any of his childhood and adolescent trauma would still have made the exact same choices he made in canon???

Sure, his trauma is not an excuse for his behavior, but then again, his behavior probably would not exist without it.

He's a very loving person when he allows himself to be, even though he doesn't know that what he's experiencing is love and devotion, no matter how messed up it may look.

And we all know the tricking-XXC-into-killing-innocents thing only happened for a limited time; eventually, he stopped doing that. He loved living with XXC and AQ, that much is evident. If SL hadn't shown up, he would have kept living with them until the end.

Anyway, those bad takes just disappointed me, and they worry me with how little sympathy or compassion there seem to be behind them.

What if the perfect family™ jiangs? Everyone thinks everything is perfect. Successful parents with good company. Good and kind daughters. Two brilliant sons who keep besting everyone in their classes. When people meet up with the family, nothing ever seems out of place, it's to such a point sometimes it feels surreal in a way. How can a family be this perfect?

It's all a facade. That's how.

jyl is the lucky one to be a daughter in a way. She is not as pressured as her brothers to do good in everything (mostly learning to be a good wife). She is well-loved by their parents and she knows it. Of course, being the daughter has its own negative traits, but she is sure this is common to every daughter around China. Plus, she is slowly building her relationship with jzx and is often out in the most recent months, so she is away from problems.

jc knows he is not enough for jfm and he is slowly starting to give up on being enough for him (though it never stops to hurt when anything good he does is being dismissed easily). He doesn't have a bad relationship with his father perse, but not having one isn't that much better either. yzy is something else but on another extreme. He /knows/ she loves him and only wants the best for him, but most of the time her demand for him to always do better is overwhelming and draining. Even with her, he doesn't do good enough, since it doesn't surpass wwx.

wwx relationship with yzy is more than bad, he knows that if he could just disappear she would be more than delighted to see that. around her he's always walking on eggshells, not wanting to anger her (which leads sometimes to jc also being brought into it). He makes sure to always be polite and knows better than to provoke her. With jfm if finds it complicated. He has a good relationship, the man seems to absolutely love him (which sometimes does make him uncomfortable because he sees how jfm doesn't treat jc that way).

But in a way, he feels something missing. wwx sometimes feels jfm loves him only because of his mother, not because of /him/. Plus, he doesn't like how he is used to comparing jc's grades (which are also great!).

Thankfully, over the years the two of them managed not to be broken apart by these treatments. when jc needs to vent, he knows wwx will listen and reassure his insecurities and never with lies, wwx always tells him what he really thinks in those more fragile moments they have.

wwx is less inclined to vent his frustration, as he doesn't want it to sound like he's not thankful for the jiang family to take him in. His memory of who was taking care of him before that is not good and he wouldn't be as well today if it wasn't for them (doesn't stop jc from pulling out of him his frustration sometimes, because holding all in his bad.)

But they don't always say everything and toe the line between keeping this good relationship and being torn apart by the little crack their parents managed to create with years of pitting them together. jc is scared to hurt wwx with his jealousy and small resentment by moment, while wwx is afraid to break apart the family even more than he did by being brought in by jfm.

of course, lqr is like everyone else, thinking the jiang family must be as good and loving as they look. both sons are doing very well in school (though he does have his dislike and frustration with how disruptive and loud wwx can be in his classes).

but with time he does notice small detail. Like how jc seems to be starving for the small praises he gives him, or the way jfm seems a bit too detached when they have some parent-teacher meeting. even wwx seems a bit off when he sees him at those meetings. He is /too/ well-behaved and polite, he even caught his little sideglance to yzy when lqr talk about the problem he caused, looking apprehensive.

The first brother lqr really starts to take care of his jc. He notices how often the young man seems to be waiting until late to go back home, even after school club. Sure, the area is safe, but it's still no good for a young teen to stay out so late. at least wwx seems to be with him all these times, waiting for jc's club to be over when he doesn't have his own club to go to that evening.

they sometimes simply give up and go back by bus together, greeting their teacher when they notice him. but the night when wwx cannot stay after school with jc seems to always be the one where the young man has to wait for the most until someone finally picks him up.

but this time it is more later than usual, lqr had to stay behind to help other teachers and he knew lxc and lwj would probably not mind practising some more even once their music lesson was over (the teacher trust them to place everything back correctly and lock the door).

this is when he noticed jc still waiting at the school entry, looking a bit anxious outside in the rain. "Jiang Cheng", lqr calls, making the youth jump and turn towards him to greet him politely. "Your parents haven't picked you up yet?" he asks as he looks around, "Your brother isn't here?".

"His club activities were cancelled for today and he went to nhs house to help him with some theory he did not understand in math" replied jc with a small smile. The news surprised lqr a bit, as he did not expect wwx to be this kind of student.

but despite how disrupting the young man could be, he had to study /at some point/, he and jc wouldn't always be at the top of the list if neither of them was studying. It was just a bit hard to put studying hard on the list of things wwx does.

"Then why aren't your parents here yet?" he asks, a bit worried. The young man had never stayed until this late.

"I think they had to do overtime" jc replies as he looks back at his phone. "I was waiting for the rain to go down a bit so I can take the bus". lqr frowns at this. Over time or not, shouldn't they at least find someone to pick up their son? he is sure he has already seen their assistant in the past being the one picking up jc, so why not now?

lqr takes a look at the heavy rain, then at his nephew who seems to understand want he wants to do, lxc offering him a small smile.

"Then I'll take you back home" lqr offers, before cutting jc off when he wants to decline, "I couldn't let one of my students go back home under such weather, I do not want anything happening to you".

jc ends up accepting, clearly looking relieved that he won't have to walk all the way to the bus stop without an umbrella (lqr notice he doesn't have one, sharing his with his student). The ride is filled with lxc trying to make jc feel a bit more at ease and make it clear it's not a bother (even lwj tries his best despite clearly not being sure what to say).

lqr isn't sure about letting jc go, as everything in the house seems dark. clearly, no one is home. "No need to worry lan-laoshi, I am sure jiejie will be back soon too," he says, although it doesn't sound really sure. lqr doesn't want to force him, so he lets him go, going away only once he's sure jc is inside his house.

This same scenario starts to occur more often than not, which does concern lqr, even more, when jc as to wait alone without wwx. "nhs brother asked if wwx minded tutoring to help raise nhs grades, so now he goes over after their club activities" (learning this, lqr doesn't miss telling wwx how well it is of him for doing so, since he believes in encouraging good behaviour, especially in more troublesome students).

at some point jc finally accepts to be taken to the lan's house, knowing his parents won't be home that night (he only learned that over the phone, as lqr was standing next to him, frowning a bit).

like this, it became a rather usual occurrence for jc to be over at their house, lwj clearly warming up to him slowly. the guest room even unofficially became jc's room when both his parents are away for business, as if believing their kids were now old enough to take care of themselves. (they are, but lqr simply cannot let himself feel comfortable at the idea of his student having to always be left alone like this).

one night jc especially looks anxious, looking back at his bag on the floor often until his phone finally rings. he hesitates, until lqr signs him he can pick it up.

"Did you find somewhere... Wen Ning?... no no I found somewhere too... yeah I know jiejie is at the jin house... okay see you at school tomorrow and don't get in trouble!" they can hear from where jc was talking in the living room, clearly trying to be quiet.

lwj is frowning at this, clearly understanding that wwx is also not home. lqr is a bit concerned at this. why does it sound like the brothers are used to needing to find somewhere to stay temporarily? but when jc comes back he doesn't comment, not wanting to intrude either.

jc apologies while he simply says it's alright, it's good to take care of your family.

The first time he brings wwx in (other than when lwj would bring him over to study, though he never stayed over) was when the boys were 16 and he had already been taking care of jc on and off for two years.

He had his share of worrying about wwx a bit, yet the young man never showed signs of emotional neglect the way his brother does and jfm always seems to shower him with praise when he meets the man.

The thing seemed off, but he had been too focused on jc to really notice how things had changed a bit. all he could see was how wwx seemed as disruptive as ever and rumours were going around that he was fighting outside of school too (which jc did admit worrying about wwx on that front since he refused to tell him).

that evening wwx showed up at the house unannounced, really close to 9 p.m. (despite knowing of their strict schedules). wwx seems surprised that he's the one opening, "It's 8.45 wy, a-zhan cannot play with you" he says, something in him still not wanting for him to influence his nephew badly.

the young man gives an awkward laugh, clearly cutting himself as he was going to say something "I get it, sorry for disturbing lan-laoshi this late" he says with an anxious smile, backing away to look down at his phone while biting his thumb.

only when lqr was about to close the door does he realise something isn't right and look back up. he doesn't remember any car dropping wwx by and the teen clearly didn't take a bike here. Did he take the bus and walk? no, at this time there aren't as many buses close to their house.

He also notices the small bag wwx is carrying, probably enough clothing for at least a night he assumes.

He did not come here to play around with lwj, he came for the night. A bad feeling settles in and he has a vague idea of why he is here. "Wei Ying" he calls back before the young man can call someone else (at least, he assumes this is what he was about to do). he moves aside, showing inside the house. the teen quickly understands, quickly jogging back inside the house, and taking off his shoes.

"Sorry for the intrusion" he hears the young man say before following him to the kitchen. Under the soft light, he can now see that wwx seems tired, a bruise forming on the side of his left eye.

This makes lqr frown a bit. he did not remember seeing this bruise when he saw the youth that day. had he fought through after school again? yet he felt like this wasn't it, if it was the case, why would he seek out somewhere to go?

He sits him down, preparing some tea as he wants for the young man to relax since wwx is still fidgeting anxiously. he also has some questions to ask him. As he was about to ask what happened, the phone on the table started ringing, "Chengcheng🐶" appeared on the screen and lqr can guess who it is.

wwx quickly answer when he sees lqr nods (he cannot stop him from reassuring jc after all).

"Are you alright?" jc asks, the sound loud enough in the quiet house to be heard clearly.

"Yes don't worry"

"Did you find somewhere, are you at nhs place?"

"Yes I found somewhere" wwx reassure softly

"He's at my place" lqr clarifies, a sigh of relief clearly heard through the phone. "Okay, good, perfect, I will come see you in the morning so don't run off before I come!".

lqr doesn't miss the warm smile on wwx smile as he hears his brother saying he will pick him up next morning, agree. He only manages to hang up when he has reassured him some more.

nearly at the same time lwj arrived, attracted by the sudden commotion downstairs, but also because it was wy voice this time. He frowns when he sees his bruise, looking up at lqr with a questioning look.

"Wei Ying will be staying tonight, please prepare the room for him" lwj immediately nods, getting back up to prepare the room.

"Thank you for letting me in" wwx thanks again. he wanted to ask for help from lwj and he had also heard jc say that lqr was really nice, he had been scared that maybe the man wouldn't be as generous, he /did/ bothered the man quite a lot in class before. Sure, he was enduring him hanging out with lwj, but he had the impression the man didn't really appreciate him.

lqr did try to pry some answer out of him, but wwx was a bit stubborn in his lie and it was too quick before lwj was back, first aid kit in hand to help his friend. before going wwx thanked him again, following lwj upstairs.

the next morning jc is here early (knowing when the lan eats breakfast) and enters with his key (lqr is happy, he gave it to him a couple of weeks ago so he can enter when he needs it but it took a while before he was really comfortable doing so).

he greets everyone before checking in on wwx immediately, clearly anxious at the signs of his bruise. "Did you fight again?" he asks worriedly.

"Wc was saying bullshit about you again, he was looking for it" wwx replies with a smile, clearly feeling better than the day before. "Language wei ying" he receives, making him apologise a bit.

he was clearly about to add more to tell the truth to jc, but after taking a glance at lxc and lqr he simply smiled. "I will be alright".

later lqr ask lwj what happened (believing wwx might have told him). he had most likely promised not to tell since he seemed to hesitate. "Did he got kick out because of the fight".

"... half of it" he simply receives before his nephew left for his classes when lqr nods.

after that, it also became a recurring thing that either of both brothers would come to the house, whether it was because the parents were both away, doing late hours, not picking them up or wwx was kicked out again.

the guest room that had slowly become jc's room became their conjoint room at the lan house, clearly not minding being in the same room. the time when lqr needed to get up in the night he would sometimes hear them whisper (he couldn't blame them for not being able to sleep at 9) by then, lqr opinion of the parents at sank really low, clearly understanding that they didn't really care (or at least not anymore) unless it was about grades (he heard once the brother talks about the company succession and how much pressure jc had over this).

got to go to work soon, but here are points I might try to write if I can:

=lqr slowly warming up to wwx and seeing he's not just the disruptive kid he thought he was

=shuangjie basically has a stack of clothing and all needed at their house because of how often they are here

=shuangjie feelings really safe and appreciated at the lan's house, feeling more like home there than when they are "home"

=feeling comfortable enough to talk about child neglect (although neither thought it was that)

=shuangjie having a place where they can finally tell each other everything without the fear of yzy and jfm hearing/barging into the discussion (leading to wwx understanding more about jc)

=wwx finally talking about the slightly more important child neglect he went through before being picked up by jfm

=wwx also finally opening up about some physical and verbal abuse from yzy ("It was just some slap and thing thrown at me" he tries to downgrade the importance)

=just overall shuangjie finally talks sincerely about everything even if it hurt because they know they will be there to catch the other and the lan's will also be there. having somewhere to slowly heal and work the issue caused by all this neglect

=lqr becoming more protective of them because he decided if the jiang don't want to raise them correctly, he will. He can easily take care of 4 kid, he don't mind it

=yzy and jfm pride hurt when they see jc and wwx much more at ease around lqr than the,

=just overall a newfound family for shuangjie

=supportive uncle lqr when maybe wangxian and xicheng become a thing? Also being the first one shuangjie felt comfortable about telling they might not be straight (after telling each other)

Accidentally start brainrot au where after PIWD, where SJ reincarnated as YZY and planning to fake his death after realising that he engaged with JFM(YQY 1.0), CSSR find out about SJ!YZY plan to fake his death and help him because damn,cultivation society sucked for woman. Along the way SJ!YZY slowly getting closer with CSSR.

Part 2/7JFM who actually in love with SJ!YZY realized that he need to step up his game before CSSR elope with his love ,[JFM misunderstanding the whole elope thing, but SJ platonic attraction did happen] so he send WCZ to distract CSSR while he romanced SJ!YZY because CSSR kept accidentally cockblock them repeatedly. Jfm finally won over Sj!Yzy [upgrade to Yqy 5.0] at cost of WCZ elope with CSSR . Rumor still happen in same way.

Part 3/7 But ironically in truth instead of Sj!YZY hating CSSR, it Jfm, for running away with his right man and almost turned his love into cutsleeve. CSSR and WCZ [alive because i say so] visit lotus pier occasionally. Jfm look amicable toward CSSR[Mentally, he will fight her to death if provided reason] ,

Part 4/7 Sj [happy and spoiled rotten by jfm] teach Jyl,Jc and Wwx(sibling in arms) what he learnt from previous life,( Sj will provide and protect his children with his life]

Part 5/7 Meanwhile, in PIWD, original luo binghe obsessed what he saw in SVSS and turned back time, to get kind shizun he want but Sj no longer exist in PIWD so he never find him,

Part 6/7 there is consequences for mixing three incompatible realms when Lbg turned back time, one realms can't return back to three.[ Abyss will take and never let go what it can hold]

Part 7/7 So human and demon race no longer exist, instead all PIDW cast get reborn as abyss creature(or humanoid) but retaining their memories. [Lbg accidentally nefted himself significantly because everyone has demon strength).

What would be interesting is that Shen Jiu is still a little too harsh, too mean, too demanding as a parent. He doesn't exactly have a healthy example to model after (and there isn't therapy either). And he's trying to be a good parent, he's cut out a lot of the harshness he had has a peak lord, but still his past flashes in his eyes and his mind can't help but whisper how his children are still so pathetic, so spoiled that they aren't properly taking advantage of all their opportunities laid out in front of them.

His words are bitter and cruel sometimes. His disappointment a sharp lashing against the kids. He hates seeing Wei Ying's brilliance not being full utilized because the boy wants to splash around in the water instead. He scorns Jiang Cheng's weak spine, bowing to social pressure because he wants to "fit in", his inability to hide his temper...

Sometimes when he sees the children, on his bad days when all he can think about are memories of his past life, all Shen Jiu can feel is disdain and loathing. As a streetrat, Shen Jiu would had murdered for such opportunities.

(Actually, he technically did that.)

And Jiang Fengmian is a little too in love with his wife that he doesn't do anything about it. He doesn't step in between Shen Jiu's sharp tongue and the children.

Shen Jiu must always be in the right, no? And even if he's not, Jiang Fengmian is sure it's not that big of a deal. No need to rock the boat and make his wife mad at him instead.

Hello there, Agnes! And thank you very much for the compliment, I'm glad if what I scatter about on this messy website is able to help others as well, even as I wrestle with my old anxieties before I toss it into the closet and tell myself to be open without worries about my opinions on a book we all have love for (or hate, I get hate reading too, if that's your thing... just please reread before trying to bash with your whole chest)

On to Jiang Fengmian, I think he was a kind man, that was not meant to be a leader, that was dealt a sad hand in life. I think his own passivity and wanting to be someone that just lived, ultimately is what sort of hurt him. His love and sentimentality, in a way feels similar to the quiet love of Lan Wangji, not understood well, especially since he did not get to have a Wei Wuxian at his side and had others he did significantly care for (Jiang Cheng) believe he was indifferent. There is a big reason why his message of being careful of how you express or what you say is such a major theme within the story, since it is his words, that are at the core of what Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji have to overcome to be happy with each other and see that their love and care is reciprocated.

Jiang Fengmian was wise in what he had to say, but his lack of faith in his own place or being able to have convictions in it, is what held him back, and made Yu Ziyuan able to be cruel to him, and their children. He was not able to rise above hardships because of this weakness. And him choosing to kowtow to that all, made him another accessory of saying and doing things that were damaging, regardless of intent. He had failed to follow his own words, and I believe he knew this as he was a worn down man by the time we get one real interaction with him. And he is just a sad man with only little happiness in his life.

He was a parent who wasn't able to speak to his child the way he or Jiang Cheng needed, and he wasn't a parent to Wei Wuxian, out of respect for his old friends, and because of the hate Madam Yu would continue to have in him. He made choices that weren't good for him, or anyone, when he ultimately agreed to a betrothal that ruined generations. I think he did see that, but didn't know how to fix it in anyway, and, went through life without really living it with little passion.

But I'm wondering whether there's something to be said about the danger of trying to force a family on people in the show/novel. Trying to put the jiang family in context - yzy vs jfm and the kids on who is family and I think I'm going to end up on all of the families.

I think the easiest way to start is wen yuan, maybe.

I run into a lot of 'wwx isn't really a-yuan's parent' discourse, and I absolutely think this is valid in that wwx does none of the 'parenty' bits of 'taking care of child, providing for them, being stable so child can explore the world', but I also want to think about that without invalidating the way that wwx is part of his larger, communal, family. He's been accepted by the surviving Wen elders for 2 generations and given a sort of claim to kinship. And the important thing is that while we as a fandom often tend to use this to invalidate WY's original family, wwx doesn't need to in order to say 'this is family'.

and sort of comparing that to lwj, who does need to invalidate - or at least to hide - wy's family, to claim him as lsz instead of wy. And how that could be a terrible thing and a rejection of wy's identity, especially since the whole - IDEK what MXTX does with her weird memory issues with everyone - and that the reason it's not is that all parts of this new, cobbled-together family want to be together and are willing to make whatever compromises are needed to make it work.

Which, of course, is why the Lan family as a whole works

Because even if lwj and lxc have bad parents, everyone they regularly interact with in the Lan clan seems to be willing to work with them, to get things done, and to do their best for them as a family. It could be argued it’s actually the absence of their toxic parents which makes the family seem as united as it is, and we can argue till the cows come home about if the Lan (and especially LQR) are overly restrictive, but no one seems to argue that lqr doesn’t love and want his nephews – not just around but in his family. Or that lxc and lwj don’t want both each other and their uncle – and the rest of their sect, including, eventually, wy/lsz.

Which of course is why I needed to go back to wen yuan before I could address the truly fucked up Jiang family

Because where this started was my thinking about yzy and her refusal to accept wwx into her family. And the way that no one in that family seems to know where they do - or where they want to - stand in relation to the family as a whole.

It's - the thing is that it isn't just a 'jfm wants to adopt wwx and his wife says no'. Because it's honestly not clear to me that jfm does want to adopt him. He wants him around as a reminder of wwx' birth family, and he wants to spoil him, but (speaking without doing the research to be sure if this is on point) I'm not actually sure he wants to be wwx's parent. More importantly, I'm not convinced jfm wants to be anyone's parent.

So we end up with a family where:

Yzy definitely wants jyl and jwy/jc (toxic as she can be about it) as her family. Arguments can be made about whether she wants jfm or just wants him to stop fucking up and would be happy if he did that by vanishing, but she def. doesn’t want wwx in her family.

Jfm arguably might not want any of yzy, jyl, or jc – though we absolutely see some evidence that he’s trying to at least fulfill social pressures to be head of household and father. Definitely does want wwx, but maybe not as family. And you know, I don’t think he’s talked about this to his wife at all because she also doesn’t seem sure whether wwx is supposed to be her adopted kid who she’s trying to reject or an uppity servant who she’s trying to put in his place.

Jyl wants both wwx and jc as her brothers. Uncertain if she wants her parents or if she’d go non-contact if she had the option.

Jc wants everyone and wants them all to love each other, but is super confused about how that should/could work out, especially with wwx. I would honestly be both shocked and disbelieving if someone said jc had any sort of coherent idea of how his dream family was supposed to look beyond ‘nice to each other’ and ‘sometimes evidence of affection, maybe’?

Wwx is almost as confused as jc. He pretty clearly loves jc and jyl, but also … doesn’t call them siblings. Doesn’t seem sure what to make of jyl calling them siblings. Social structure absolutely makes this even more complicated as wwx is left going ‘they’re both inferior to me bc I’m the most awesome cultivator and thus I need to protect them and they’re my social superiors’. And that’s before we add yzy and jfm.

Unlike wy, wwx is super attached to his birth parents – or at least, the idea of them and his memories of them. He wouldn’t want to be a Jiang, because he’s a Wei. How much of that is self-protection in response to yzy, idk, but even if yzy had a change of heart during the Cloud Recesses arc when we first meet wwx and went ‘let’s adopt this’ I think he’d say no. And with the way he calls jfm ‘uncle’ – I think I remember this anyway – I don’t know that he wants to be jfm’s kid either. Even if he hadn’t seen how jfm treats his actual kids.

this in relation to my guilty reddit aita pleasure and the number of truly awful 'my family member is forcing this person into my family' stories and much as I love the Yunmeng Trio as 3 Jiang sibs … I don’t think there’s a way for the family to work, and I don’t think it’s just yzy who is the reason.

(trying not to be too biased in the above, but I am willing to be corrected if I’ve screwed anything up)

Which brings me to the Jin.

And my initial thought with them about how, without wanting to invalidate MY/JGY’s very understandable desire to have a father who would recognize him, he’s doing the same thing to his father and his father’s wife that jfm is doing to yzy. And how maybe the Jiang family is meant to be a lesson – and another way in which jgy and wwx are mirroring each other – about the danger of trying to force people to be your family. And JGS (may he rot) makes it clear that it doesn’t matter whether yzy’s fears are right and wwx is jfm’s son.

Because unlike jfm, who can be believed when he says ‘that’s my friend’s son, not mine’, JGS makes no attempt to say ‘that’s not my bio kid’. But he still gets to say ‘that’s not family’ (and so does his wife, little though we see of her) and I kind of think we’re supposed look at him and –beyond thinking he has dreadful sexual ethics even before he commits explicit rape – think about how responsibility to his children might actually mean not bringing them into a household where they’re not wanted.

Like – it’s cute to imagine JZX and JGY trying to be siblings and it’s absolutely the ‘proper Chinese wife’s place’ to accept their husband’s children (currently reading Exemplary Women of China, which is a great translation of 列女傳 the 18 BCE set of ‘what a good woman looks like’ stories and it’s got a lot of ‘good wives accept their husband’s concubine’s kids or their stepkids’ stories), but also I don’t think MXTX is asking readers to just accept misogynistic social standards and say ‘the husband sows and the wife reaps’ (though, see the Nie family who I hope to get to later…)

So despite what ms thinks and tells her son, JGS isn’t necessarily supposed to bring his bio-children home (or, he absolutely is by social rules, but MXTX doesn’t necessarily seem to agree that that’s the right thing to do). And if he does, then realistically – by standard social norms – he should bring his mother too (which if we’re being cynical is obviously why ms might have wanted a child by him). But given how positively we’re shown ms in canon, it wouldn’t make sense for the answer to be as simple as ‘then don’t visit prostitutes’ (though, like, ‘don’t cheat on your spouse; either get her on board or keep it to yourself’ is definitely a reasonable option, especially since men could divorce their wives ….)

And idek what Mo Xuanyu is meant to show. I mean, we’re obviously not supposed to think ‘bring the kid home and then later kick him out’ is okay. But was bringing him into Lanling to learn cultivation in the first place good? Bad? Would that have been the right choice is JGS hadn’t been a dick about it?

Which leads us to the Nie, who I absolutely cannot be unbiased about because I love them

I love that the Nie are our canonical ‘look, non-blood sibs can work’ family. And also our ‘ but seriously, guys, don’t do this’ family.

Nmj and nhs, who have canonically different mothers (even if it’s only Word of God that nhs’ mum is a concubine rather than a second wife) are our obvious ‘here’s the right way of doing – I can’t even call it marital infidelity but kids by multiple women’. But we don’t see what that looks like and we don’t understand it – which makes perfect sense since we’re seeing it from the perspective of wwx, who fundamentally doesn’t have a clear sense of what family should look like

And nmj is also at the center of yet another ‘don’t try to make a family work when not everyone agrees’ with jgy in 3-zun. Where even if we all agree that nmj wants to have a working relationship with jgy, I think it’s obvious (does anyone remember that awesome tumblr post about the vows and comparing 3-zun with our historical examples? I’m writing this at work and don’t have that on me … ) that nmj was absolutely not ready for the type of relationship that 3-zun is at the time when lxc talked him into it.

And 3-zun is also at the center of yet another ‘doomed triad’ (wow mxtx likes those) with nhs, jgy, and lxc. Which is one of those that manages somehow to do both. It’s a great set of ‘brothers’. Lxc and jgy really do seem to like nhs (although maybe … less so … by the end). Nhs really does seem happy to have extra ‘siblings’. I mean, the fact that he calls them all his brothers and they let him is actually a huge sign of affection from everyone involved. And yet – well.

We all know how this story ends, don’t we?

JC Love Month 2020  Day 7

Family’s Obligation

Day 7 of JC Love Month brings some modern Lan Qiren feels, who doesn’t even try to hide that Jiang Cheng is his favourite student. Warning for some shitty, shitty parenting from JFM and YZY, I guess.

Jiang Cheng is sitting in Headmaster Lan Qiren’s office and he really wishes he could be anywhere else.

“Are you in pain?” Lan Qiren asks him and Jiang Cheng looks down at his bandaged wrists.

The nurse thinks it’s broken, so she recommended a trip to the hospital to get it checked out even though she already bandaged it and Jiang Cheng is just waiting for his parents to pick him up.

Or at least Lan Qiren is waiting for that.

Jiang Cheng knows better than to expect them to come for him.

“It’s okay,” Jiang Cheng says, even though it’s still throbbing painfully.

Lan Qiren seems to be able to look right through him, because he gets up and hands Jiang Cheng another cold compress. Jiang Cheng doesn’t even know where he got it from, but he gratefully takes it anyway.

“You should speak the truth if you are in discomfort or pain,” Lan Qiren chastises him as he sits back down and Jiang Cheng shrugs.

It’s not like people in his household usually care much if he’s hurt or not, his siblings not counting.

And speaking of siblings—

“Where’s Wei Wuxian?” Jiang Cheng asks and he thinks that he can see a vein throb on Lan Qiren’s temple.

“That hellion ran away after what he did,” Lan Qiren presses out and Jiang Cheng is just about to protest, because there was a whole gang of Jin’s after him, when Lan Qiren pinches the bridge of his nose. “And it was probably the smart thing to do as well,” he sighs. “Still, he’ll have to come in eventually and I’ll have to punish him for what he did.”

Jiang Cheng would protest that as well—Wei Wuxian was only defending him after all, and he was not the first one to throw a punch—but Jin Zixun has been kicked out of the school, so whatever punishment Wei Wuxian will get, it will probably be a lot better than that.

“Thank you for kicking Jin Zixun out,” Jiang Cheng mutters and Lan Qiren levels him with a look.

“He attacked three different students, was entirely disrespectful towards your sister and your brother, seriously injured you, threatened your family and broke so many rules that I won’t bother reciting them all now. Of course I wouldn’t tolerate that.”

“And Wei Wuxian—?” Jiang Cheng dares to ask, because Lan Qiren seems to be in a talkative mood at the moment.

“As much as I don’t like him and his insolvent behaviour I have to admit that it was good of him to stand up for you and Jiang Yanli. He certainly has the right values, unlike other people in this school,” Lan Qiren spits out and it’s no secret that he holds no love for the Wen or Jin heirs.

“He’ll have to copy the rules,” Lan Qiren says after a moment of deliberation and Jiang Cheng raises his eyebrow.

That seems like a very lenient punishment, especially coming from Lan Qiren.

“I guess Wangji will have to oversee it,” Lan Qiren goes on and suddenly Jiang Cheng’s eyes burn.

Everyone in this school knows that Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian are so very desperately in love with each other and it must have reached Lan Qiren’s ears as well.

This is no punishment at all. It’s a reward.

And since Lan Qiren holds no love for Wei Wuxian this must be a reward for Wei Wuxian because he came to Jiang Cheng’s defence.

It’s like an unspoken secret that Lan Qiren holds a soft spot for Jiang Cheng, even though Jiang Cheng himself could never figure out why the hell that would be the truth, but it seems like everyone else was right. Jiang Cheng never dared to believe it, even when Lan Qiren checks in him personally at least once a week, and when Jiang Cheng’s parents forgot to pick him up, Jiang Cheng got to do his homework in Lan Qiren’s office.

Still, Jiang Cheng always thought he was just being a decent person to a sad, lost boy, but it seems like everyone was in fact right when they say that Jiang Cheng is Lan Qiren’s favourite.

“Thank you,” Jiang Cheng whispers and Lan Qiren strokes his goatee, clearly uncomfortable with Jiang Cheng’s expression of gratitude.

“Where are your parents?” he asks instead of letting the moment turn more awkward than it already way, and every warm feeling flees Jiang Cheng’s body.

He had called them from the infirmary, but he hadn’t reached them. Jiang Cheng suspects that they chose to ignore him, rather than missed his call, because he called both his parent’s work phones.

“I don’t know,” he admits. “I couldn’t reach them.”

“Are they at home?” Lan Qiren demands to know and Jiang Cheng shrugs.

He hasn’t seen either of his parents for the past few days, but he’s not going to mention that to Lan Qiren now.

“I think they are at work. There is some big deal going down if I’m not mistaken,” Jiang Cheng finally says and Lan Qiren nods, though he seems anything but happy about it.

“I see,” he says and then reaches for the phone.

It’s enough to startle Jiang Cheng into motion, because if Lan Qiren calls them then his parents will think Jiang Cheng did something wrong and he doesn’t want to hear their reaction to that.

“Please, don’t,” he says, before Lan Qiren can dial a number and he freezes in his movement.

“What?” he asks.

“Don’t call them. I can just go home by bus, it’s no problem,” Jiang Cheng desperately tries.

“You’re supposed to go to the hospital, not home,” Lan Qiren sternly tells him and then simply dials the number.

“They won’t come,” Jiang Cheng mutters, and Lan Qiren’s eyes snap to him.

“Headmaster Lan, what did Wei Wuxian do now?” Madam Yu’s voice rings out from the speaker and Jiang Cheng tries his best to melt into the seat.

“This is about your son,” Lan Qiren says and there’s a beat of silence.

“What did he do?” Madam Yu asks and whereas she sounded annoyed the first time, there’s real anger in her voice now.

“He got hurt,” Lan Qiren says with a frown and Madam Yu sighs.

“Is he alright?” she asks, and Jiang Cheng’s hand clenches around the cold compress.

His wrist hurts, and with his luck it’s more damaged than just bruised, and his mother is not going to care beyond the fact that he can’t work at his intern job in the company.

“His wrist got injured. A trip to the hospital is advisable,” Lan Qiren tells her.

“If it’s only his wrist, he can take the bus. My son is not so weak that he needs to be coddled. He can take care of himself. He better got that by beating someone else up,” Madam Yu says and Jiang Cheng wishes she would stop talking.

“Madam Yu!” Lan Qiren says in outrage but Madam Yu doesn’t seem to care that much.

“Is he there?” she asks and Lan Qiren expectantly looks at Jiang Cheng.

“Yes, mother,” he dutifully says.

“What happened?” she asks and Jiang Cheng tries to hide his wince but going by the twitch in Lan Qiren’s brow he doesn’t know how successful he is.

“Jin Zixun said something mean to Yanli so I tried to make him stop,” he sums it up and Jiang Cheng goes cold at the answering silence.

“And?” Madam Yu icily asks after a moment.

“And then Jin Zixun almost broke my wrist,” Jiang Cheng goes on.

“Wei Wuxian?” Madam Yu wants to know and Jiang Cheng shrinks even more in on himself.

“Came to my help.”

“Is he hurt?”

“Not that I know of,” Jiang Cheng says and he knows what’s coming next.

“Then you are not, either. I expect you at work later this afternoon,” Madam Yu says and Jiang Cheng hangs his head.

“Yes, mother,” he agrees and Madam Yu hangs up without another word.

There’s only the beeping sound for a horrible long time and then Lan Qiren lets out a long, long breath.

“Does that mean she’s not coming?” he then asks, voice carefully controlled and Jiang Cheng nods miserably.

“Your father?” Lan Qiren asks then and Jiang Cheng is quick to shake his head.

“He will go looking for Wei Wuxian, claiming that it’s more important since we know that I am fine, but the same can’t be said about Wei Wuxian,” Jiang Cheng predicts and is very grateful when Lan Qiren doesn’t pick up the phone to verify.

“Is it always like that?” Lan Qiren carefully asks and Jiang Cheng is very ashamed when he bursts into tears.

But it’s just all too much; the whole day has been a rollercoaster of emotions starting with the anger towards Jin Zixun and the adrenalin and then he got hurt and Wei Wuxian came to his rescue and now this whole mess.

Jiang Cheng doesn’t know how to handle any of this at all.

He startles badly when someone awkwardly pats his shoulder but when he realizes that it’s just Lan Qiren he almost leans into him. Jiang Cheng wonders which one of them feels more awkward about this, but he can’t bring himself to care, at least not right now.

“Jiang Wanyin, is it always like that?” Lan Qiren asks again and this time Jiang Cheng nods.

“I haven’t seen either of them for a couple of days. I know they are home sometimes, but mother goes to talk to Yanli and father goes to talk to Wei Wuxian and then there’s simply no time for me. Father would drop everything to search the whole town for Wei Wuxian but driving me to the hospital would be a chore. Caring for me is an obligation neither of them know how to handle, and by now I am not expecting anything anymore,” it bursts out of Jiang Cheng.

Jiang Cheng doesn’t get much for his position as an intern, but what he gets he saves. When he turns eighteen he’ll be out of his family home immediately and he doesn’t think his parents will notice for at least a week.

It’s a thought Jiang Cheng tries to push very far away.

Lan Qiren is very quiet at his side and Jiang Cheng is afraid to even look at him, too scared to see what his reaction is to that, so when Lan Qiren puts his hand more firmly on his shoulder, Jiang Cheng is startled.

“Get up, we’re driving to the hospital,” Lan Qiren says and Jiang Cheng is left staring after him, because immediately after his declaration Lan Qiren left the office, talking to his secretary.

Jiang Cheng isn’t entirely sure how he ended up in Lan Qiren’s car, but he’s there before he can gather a coherent thought.

“I wouldn’t want to impose,” Jiang Cheng says as Lan Qiren already starts the car and Lan Qiren silences him with a look.

That does nothing to Jiang Cheng. Madam Yu is his mother, he’s used to much worse.

“Really, you must be busy. There must be other things you need to do,” Jiang Cheng insists, but Lan Qiren shakes his head.

“There is nothing more important than making sure that you are alright, do you understand me?” he wants to know and Jiang Cheng has nothing else to say to that, so they spent the rest of the drive to the hospital in a tense silence.

Lan Qiren stays by his side through the whole examination and when the doctor asks Jiang Cheng if it’s okay to tell him the results in front of Lan Qiren who is neither a parent nor a guardian, Jiang Cheng simply nods.

Lan Qiren feels very much like both of these things in the moment and Jiang Cheng is not at all sure how to deal with that.

“Your wrist is broken,” the doctor tells him then and Jiang Cheng slumps, because of course it is.

Nothing can ever be easy for him.

They put a cast on his arm and then Jiang Cheng is back in Lan Qiren’s car, when Jiang Cheng’s phone rings.

He accepts the call when he sees that it’s Wei Wuxian.

“Where are you?” is the first thing Wei Wuxian asks him and Jiang Cheng snorts much to Lan Qiren’s dislike it seems.

“Shouldn’t I be asking you that?” Jiang Cheng gives back but Wei Wuxian sounds worried and Jiang Cheng is not liking it.

“Listen, I managed to run away from the Jins but I had an encounter with Wen Chao,” Wei Wuxian says and Jiang Cheng winces.

Wen Chao is nothing more than a slimy bastard, but he always has Wen Zhuliu around and he’s a real piece of work.

“Are you alright?” Jiang Cheng asks, because of course Wei Wuxian would go straight from the fire into the frying pan.

“A little roughed up. Got a nice shiner. Do you think Lan Zhan will kiss it better?” Wei Wuxian asks and Jiang Cheng wonders if Lan Qiren will pop a vein with how angry he seems at hearing that.

“What do I care?” Jiang Cheng gives back, but if Wei Wuxian is hurt, he can guess where this is going.

“A-Cheng, I don’t think you should be coming home today,” Wei Wuxian says just on cue and of course.

His father thinks it’s Jiang Cheng’s fault Wei Wuxian got hurt, and his mother thinks the opposite, so they are fighting again.

“Bad?” Jiang Cheng wants to know even though he damn well knows the answer.

“I’m going to stay with Wen Qing tonight, and shijie is with Jin Zixuan, so—,” Wei Wuxian trails off and that means it’s more than bad.

“Fine, I’ll find a place to stay,” Jiang Cheng sighs, even though dread curls in his gut.

He’s not quite as lucky as Wei Wuxian or Jiang Yanli with his friends. His only real friend is Nie Huaisang and he and his brother are out of town at the moment.

Jiang Cheng guesses he could beg Jin Zixuan to let him take the couch but he doesn’t want to ruin his sister’s evening and Jiang Cheng would rather sleep on the streets than room with Wen Qing and Wei Wuxian.

“Take care,” Wei Wuxian says and then simply hangs up on him.

“What was that?” Lan Qiren demands to know and Jiang Cheng startles, because over his own dilemma he almost forgot that they are in his car.

“The usual,” Jiang Cheng tries, but Lan Qiren levels him with a look and Jiang Cheng deflates.

“My father thinks Wei Wuxian’s injury is my fault because I started it, so he is mad at me. My mother can’t stand it when he is mad at me instead of Wei Wuxian, so she gets in these really vicious fights with him and if that happens it’s really best if none of us are home,” Jiang Cheng says with a shrug.

“Where will you stay?” Lan Qiren asks and Jiang Cheng admires him for everything that he so clearly wanted to say and still swallowed.

There’s no way that was his first thought to this.

“Don’t know yet,” Jiang Cheng gets out with a desperate smile. “I’m gonna find a place.”

Lan Qiren looks at him as if he can tell exactly that Jiang Cheng is most likely not going to find a place and then he sighs.

“You’re coming with me,” Lan Qiren decides and Jiang Cheng gapes at him.

“I’m sorry, what?”

“You’re not going to sleep on the streets or whatever you are thinking,” Lan Qiren almost snaps at him as if he’s offended even thinking about it. “I have a guest room and you’re going to use it.”

Jiang Cheng opens his mouth to argue, but then he realizes that there isn’t much he can argue against. It will most likely be awkward as hell, but Jiang Cheng is out of options, so really, what is he going to say to that.

Jiang Cheng tries not to gape when they come to stop in front of a huge house, because this neighbourhood is even nicer than Jiang Cheng’s own, and he only drags his eyes away from the house when Lan Qiren turns towards him.

“Jiang Wanyin,” he starts and Jiang Cheng dreads whatever comes out of his mouth next. “I have a spare key and you’re going to take it,” Lan Qiren tells him then and before Jiang Cheng can protests, a key is being pressed into his uninjured hand.

“What?” Jiang Cheng very dumbly asks but he doesn’t understand what’s happening right now.

“If that is a regular occurrence, I never want you to fret over where you’ll stay,” Lan Qiren says with vehemence. “If you can’t stay at friends of yours, then you’ll come here. I have a spare room and no one who uses it and if I hear you’re sleeping on the streets or something equally outrageous then I’m going to drag you here by your ear.”

Jiang Cheng has to blink very fast at that, because his vision gets blurry and he thinks bursting into tears right now is only going to make Lan Qiren retract his offer.

“And if you ever need a place just to get away from your parents, even for just an hour, you also come here,” Lan Qiren goes on and Jiang Cheng is quick to nod, because if he already accepted, Lan Qiren can’t take it back anymore.

“Alright,” Lan Qiren says and squeezes his shoulder once before he gets out of the car.

He gives Jiang Cheng some time to compose himself, but when he finally follows Lan Qiren into the house and has to use the key to enter, Jiang Cheng bursts into tears again, because a very small part of him thought that maybe Lan Qiren was just fucking with him.

It’s almost not at all awkward when Lan Qiren hugs him, and even if it was, Jiang Cheng wouldn’t mention it.
