do you ever think about how QHJ was twenty when got married and went into seclusion and so LQR was at BEST 19 when he got the sect dropped on him and quite possibly younger. He's in his thirties during the cloud recesses arc

WELL I SURE AM THINKING ABOUT IT NOW.

Nineteen? NINETEEN? LQR is hardly the only character to be parentified at a young age (hi, JYL!) or forced into a sect leader role at a young age (hi, NMJ!), but the only one out here doing BOTH those things is JC. LQR and JC commiseration session and/or LQR going out of his way to support JC because he recognizes his younger self in him WHEN.

Also. All the comments about how LQR is soooo old and suchhhh a fuddy-duddy are like 1000x funnier now--not because being 30something is old, but because 1.) it sure would seem that way to a jerkass teen like WWX, 2.) the teaching + parenting + acting sect leader combo would definitely have aged him, and 3.) some people are simply born spiritually middle-aged and LQR is one of them.

(But seriously, the older generation is so so SO interesting to me conceptually, and I would 100% read a novel about what they're all up to, even if it's going to make me sad.)

Yesterday I was scrolling through Pinterest and stumbled into many fan art depicting Jiang Cheng and Jin Ling. JC taking care of JL as a month old baby ,then as a toddler,etc etc...

It reminded me that we never really give much credit to JC for raising JL. I mean sure JGY also played a part , but JC's affection and concern for JL is unbeatable. There was this fanart where JC is actually holding a very tiny JL , trying to figure out how to feed him , then how to change his clothes and all the things that involves taking care of a newborn. The expressions depicted in JC's face just made me ache. I mean just imagine the pain of losing his sister, brother in law and WY(cmon I know despite of JC's love and hate relationship with WY, there definitely must be a part in his heart that must be aching) fresh in his mind , having to take care of a new born , which you have zero idea about. You have to build your sect ,you don't have anyone else to rely on. You can't show your weakness to anyone else. Even if you are damn tired , almost near a mental breakdown,you cannot falter ,you have a nephew and he doesn't have anyone else but you as a family. I would like to believe many a times when JC would be extremely tired and feeling hopeless,JL must be a source of his motivation to keep on.

(I can see a bit of parallelism here with LQR where both of them were young(baby of the house 🤭)and thrusted the responsibility of taking care of their respective nephews. They're not married,but with hit and trial,they are able to raise their nephews to be fine young men.)

Just imagining what would JC have taught JL for his first word. Would he insist that JL learn Mother first before anything. Imagining JC telling a toddler JL about how his parents were ,his mother ,his father,his grandmother and grandfather and about his Da-jiu(only till the time JL doesn't understand as soon as he would grow up ,he would stop telling JL about how the three of them used to enjoy Lotus pier).

And JL eventually learning to call Jiujiu.When JC and JL had their first fight how JC must have felt? Like he's been a strict person like his mother and how certain traits of his mother can be reflected in his upbringing of JL? And when JL got his first scrape after falling down,how worried JC must be? Ok there are so many what if's and possibilities to think about...

But I just wanted to mention that JC tried his very best to raise his nephew. Parenting can always have good and bad , that's what we can see ,but both of them share a loving bond.

I really wanted to write this appreciation post for JC. I know JC has committed horrible mistakes, which are inexcusable ,but still some fans are really very harsh in criticizing him. As much as I love WY ,I won't deny that in some instances I even fault WY ,for not understanding the bigger picture. For me the simple conclusion is that both of them had pride and anger and the result was disastrous. Some are more to blame for their actions,some are less,but the mistake was on both of their part's.

So yes he's a Sour purple grape lol ,but I really hope post canon,him and WY are able to find some semblance and common footing.

“I don’t suppose you can help with this,” Wen Ruohan said to Lan Qiren, who had the unmitigated gall to look amused at him, as if he’d brought this disaster down on his own head or something like that. “Aren’t you supposed to be friends with that awful -”

“Cangse Sanren and I are indeed good friends,” Lan Qiren said peaceably and tonelessly, possibly just because he was trying to annoy Wen Ruohan to death. “I am therefore very familiar with the fact that there is absolutely nothing I can do to stop her from proceeding precisely as she wishes.”

That was not what Wen Ruohan wanted to hear.

“You’re her friend,” he said, deciding to focus on the important part. “Take her away.”

“You’re the sect leader of the Nightless City,” Lan Qiren rebutted. “Order her to leave.”

Wen Ruohan couldn’t do that.

Well, he could. By all rights, he ought to have done it a month ago, when Cangse Sanren had first marched into the Fire Palace and said, “Oh, this will work perfectly! I love it, you’re so thoughtful!” and started rearranging the entire place into some sort of workshop for herself, possibly involving grain storage. He’d meant to, but he’d been a bit distracted at the time – Wei Changze had wanted to know what all the machines did, and he’d had an endless number of clever ideas on how some of them could be repurposed for things other than torture, some of which had been really very intriguing.

Anyway, it wasn’t as if Wen Ruohan had time to attend torture sessions any more, not with three loudly yelling children running around all the time. Wei Wuxian might be the youngest of the lot, with both Wen Xu and Wen Chao as his elders, but he’d managed in a very short amount of time to make himself the undoubted leader of the pack and spoiled beloved youngest all at the same time. There had even been avid discussions about how they would need to bring other children over to visit in order to better socialize the children. He’d already summoned some cousins over, Wen Qing and Wen Ning, which meant that soon there would be even more children…

It was a headache, really.

Absolutely.

Wei Changze and Cangse Sanren were driving him up the wall.

They were also regular visitors in his bed, something that would very likely rapidly stop being the case if he actually kicked them out of the Nightless City.

“This one’s on you, Hanhan,” Lao Nie put in, grinning wildly at him. Now there was one that was completely unmoved by the news of Wen Ruohan’s new relationship – everyone else had reacted, whether by Jiang Fengmian’s profound embarrassment, raging jealousy, and quiet fury, Jin Guangshan very obviously trying to calculate some way of using this to his advantage, and Lan Qiren immediately going over to question his friends’ sanity – and that was pretty annoying in its own way. After all, Wen Ruohan had really only invited the two rogue cultivators into his bed in the first place as a matter of spite, a way of excising his rage when he’d heard the rumors about Lao Nie potentially taking on a third wife.

He hadn’t expected them to stay.

He hadn’t expected to want them to stay.

Which he didn’t! They were a mess, each one worse than the next – Cangse Sanren was barely human most days, like some sort of feral demonic beast that had accidentally achieved human form and continuously forgot (thanks to her prodigiously bad memory) that she was supposed to be pretending to be normal, and Wei Changze was remarkably similar to Lao Nie in the sense that he’d never taken anything seriously in his life, except for the fact that his humor was lighthearted and unleavened by the hints of trauma and tragedy that lurked behind Lao Nie’s unbridled hedonism. There wasn’t anything that he wouldn’t let slide off his shoulders, forgetting a beating as soon as it was over…Wei Changze might be a lot less vicious than Lao Nie was, but he was reckless to the extreme, in a way that made absolutely no sense. Wasn’t he supposed to be a servant? What was he doing rushing out into the field with a sword and smile and absolutely no advance planning whatsoever? Even Lao Nie wouldn’t do that!

Anyway, they were a handful.

They were maddening.

They were the most interesting thing that had happened to Wen Ruohan in years.

“Your input is not required,” Wen Ruohan informed Lao Nie, who shrugged expansively. “Unless you have something constructive to add.”

“No, no, nothing constructive, you know me, I’m not built for that…but I’m glad that you’re happy.”

Wen Ruohan stopped where he was.

“I’m not right for you,” Lao Nie said, and even though he was still smiling, same as always, there was something sharp in his eyes – the same sharpness that had caught Wen Ruohan’s interest in the first place, like a beautiful dagger that you longed to touch even though you knew its biting edge might cut. “You know, I know, even Qiren knows it…you’re happy now, and that’s good. That’s all I wanted to say.”

Wen Ruohan wanted to say something.

Preferably something cutting, something about how it was too late for Lao Nie to regret – except he didn’t think Lao Nie did regret, because Lao Nie did not live a life of regret. Lao Nie had enjoyed their time together, had been as sincere and true as he was made to be and no further. But, and maybe it was because he’d never expected to keep Wen Ruohan for very long in the first place, he’d felt little sorrow at it ending, instead feeling nothing but joy on Wen Ruohan’s behalf at seeing him happy, even if it was with another.

Wen Ruohan didn’t understand that. He’d always loved too fiercely, too well; he’d always yearned to keep that which he cared for close to him, nearby, somewhere he could protect them and keep them.

Even Lao Nie…Wen Ruohan had been enticed by Lao Nie’s ruthlessness, his bloodthirstiness, his Nie sect temper tempered with a nasty sort of cunning that had made him remarkably successful at expanding his sect’s reach in the north, and he’d been flattered at how persistent the other man was in pursuing him. It was only later, when he’d gotten used to having him around, that he had started to feel jealous…

“They’ll be good for you,” Lao Nie said. His eye twinkled. “You could use a bit of chaos in your life.”

Wen Ruohan shook his head. “I’m trying to get rid of them,” he protested, but even he didn’t believe what he was saying. “They’re a menace. Especially Cangse Sanren – do you know that she’s literally doomed? I swear, I spend all my trying keeping her from getting herself killed…”

“Don’t you enjoy defying the heavens?” Lan Qiren asked, rolling his eyes as if Wen Ruohan were missing something obvious. “I would have thought that someone carting around a heaven-sent calamity would be a perk for someone like you.”

…it rather was, wasn’t it?

“Whatever. Fine. Leave it, I’ll figure it out myself,” Wen Ruohan grumbled, then turned his narrowed eyes on the two of them. “Now for something you can help with: My children need more socialization or else they’ll genuinely think Wei Wuxian is a good example of other children. Sect Leader Lan – you’re a teacher, aren’t you…?”

“Well, yes. But –”

“What a wonderful idea!” Lao Nie clapped his hands together. “I can send my two boys to Qiren to teach, too! And we can definitely bully Fengmian and Guangshan into sending theirs. It’ll be…oh, I don’t know. A regular summer excursion!”

“In my sect?” Lan Qiren asked, arching his eyebrows. “Why me?”

“Because you’re a teacher, of course. Anyway, are you saying you don’t want Cangse Sanren to crash at your place for a few months..?”

“She’s not going anywhere,” Wen Ruohan said at once. When both of them smirked at him, he scowled. “Even if I wanted her too, she’s not. It was a statement of fact, nothing more.”

“Then perhaps we should all come visit the Nightless City instead,” Lao Nie said. “It could be like a miniature discussion conference, except limited to the Great Sects – we could go night-hunting and such while Qiren teaches the children.”

Was Lao Nie proposing an orgy? He’d better not be proposing an orgy, not if he genuinely intended to invite Jiang Fengmian and his wife or Jin Guangshan and his to attend…

“Of course, if it’s focused on the children, maybe the adults aren’t entirely necessary to invite – well, except for you, as the host, Qiren as the teacher, and me as the person who came up with the idea…”

Lao Nie was definitely proposing an orgy.

“…I’ll see what Cangse Sanren and Wei Changze have to say about it,” Wen Ruohan allowed. But only because he thought that it was something they would very much like, and he’d been completely out of ideas on what he could get a couple as notoriously disinterested in material goods as a courting gift – he hated not being capable, that’s all it was. There was no other reason than that! “We’ll see.”

“Did I agree to this?” Lan Qiren asked, frowning. “When did I agree to this –”

“You can’t say no,” Wen Ruohan said. “I’ll set Cangse Sanren on you if you do.”

I wanted to ask if you know what's canon about Wei Wuxian's parents? I know Cangse Sanren shaving LQR's beard is a thing but I'm not sure about other information I've seen

Like, is it canon that she attend the lectures at the same time young masters did and met JFM and Wei Changze (if he even attended) there? Was JFM really in love with her or is that a rumor Madam Yu believes? Was he trying to court her in his youth? Did wwx's parents elope before or after jfm married? What kind of servant was Wei Changze, something similar to Madam Yu's servants, who have a low status but can fight or did he not fight much at all

I know there's very little information about them and the novel is long but you seem very knowledgeable so I thought it wouldn't hurt to ask if you know the answers to some of these 😅 Of course you don't have to answer all of them, I have no idea if they even can be answered with available information, I hope I'm not being too bothersome!

I joined the fandom this year so I'm still diving deeper into this series (I watched the donghua and read some chapters online) and I love your takes so much! You've opened my eyes on a lot of things and put into words some of my own feelings, big fan!

Hello anon!! I had to take some time to think about it, but I think I have some answers for you.

So what’s specifically canon about Cangse-Sanren and Wei Changze? Well…

We know that she descended from Baoshan-sanren’s mountain as a young woman and met Jiang Fengmian and got along decently well with him, but fell in love with Wei Changze and eloped with him before Jiang Fengmian married Yu Ziyuan or even seemed to be clan leader. We know that she and Wei Changze were nomadic, they traveled around together with a donkey and they later had a baby boy, our dear Wei Wuxian before dying on a nighthunt together near Yiling when Wei Ying was five.

There’s not really a lot that’s known in story, and some of the details repeated are either pretty clearly made up (in the past, no one but Yu Ziyuan, her best friend and her best friend’s son ever make mention of Jiang Fengmian having feelings for Cangse-sanren) but it’s pretty clear from what little we do get is that she was a woman who loved her family, who laughed, who taught her son how to not hold grudges because it would let him fly free, and seemed to be a good, caring person. As for what kind of servant Wei Changze was, there’s just so little about him in the story that we can never be sure. Whatever his role was, he seemed to be able to learn to be a cultivator and became a rogue cultivator with his wife.

As for the parts with her shaving Lan Qiren’s beard, that is pretty much just MXTX talking about things she knew about the characters that had no room in the story. Basically the reason why Lan Qiren holds a grudge is because he, Wei Changze and Jiang Fengmian all went on a nighthunt that went very wrong in part to him being exceptionally rigid, she came in and saved all their lives, then shaved off his beard for putting them in danger. Which is really quite the chain of events there.

They are very interesting for what little we get of them, but there is very little to be gotten. They are fragments of ghosts in Wei Wuxian’s memory, people who he still cares about and misses, but doesn’t remember all that well. Most character details we get are from brief thoughts or Wei Wuxian’s fragmented memories. That being said, they probably were very good parents to him for the short time he had them and the things they were able to impart carried him through both lifetimes.

After watching his husband; his son; nephew; brother and little radishes dying in front of him one by one because of a source of resentful energy; Wei WuXian dies too as he destroys it.

But instead of darkness; he finds himself back in the past when he had just gotten kicked out of the cloud recess and everything looks so peaceful he can’t stand it. No…no no no he really can’t go through this hell again. Not again. Not after everything was supposed to be over.

Not knowing that Lan WangJi has been thrown back in time as well; he tries; and fails at taking his own life by slitting his throat open in the middle of lotus pier and so; he decides to show everyone the future.

If he’s going to live this hell again; he’s going to change it and if these people are suddenly so determined to keep him alive; then he’s not going to let them die either.

It doesn’t matter if they end up hating him just as much as he hates himself.

I love your story"For what, for all but myself," it's so good! I do wonder though, what would have happened had JC actually died. Like we know what practically would have happened but grief is messy even at the best of times. I dunno I just like angst.

Ah, so you want the bad timeline! OK let me see...

The immediate fallout is WWX and JL screaming, crying, throwing up. The only thing the doctors can do is present them with Jiang Xi. JL takes him and holds him, thinking he's warm -- he holds JC's last warmth. He huddles around JX, and so we have the first split, because WWX is still wailing over JC's body, gabbling about ways the doctors should try to bring him back. However the doctors can't do anything more -- JC is already gone. WWX starts thinking aloud about how to reanimate him, but the doctors make it very clear they will not let him, and when he starts getting YLLZ about it, they point out that JC's will states that WWX is not to interfere with his body, and in fact is not allowed to have any involvement with his funeral preparations, because JC was afraid he would try something.

This shakes WWX deeply, that JC was so prepared for him, but he still fights LWJ trying to pull him away until one of the doctors knocks him out with a needle.

JL uses his fixation on JX to keep his grief at bay, so he sets about initiating the plans JC laid out. JSH is named sect protector, the other guardians are called to move into the family residence, and then JL announces the news to the sect, all the while still clutching JX. It's only when JX has to feed that JL can be persuaded to let him go and then when his arms are empty JL is overwhelmed with grief. He cries in JSH's arms and JSH's eldest daughter helps take care of him.

They keep WWX under while preparing for the funeral, worried what he might try. JL tells LWJ he must keep WWX from doing anything to JC, no matter how much WWX begs. They do let him attend the funeral and he's unable to keep his composure, everyone is afraid of him turning back into YLLZ.

LXC returns to seclusion following the funeral -- he put too much hope into the relationship he wanted with JC, and can't cope with the loss. NHS is full of regrets.

The rest of the Jianghu is reeling that Sandu Shengshou could stop the resentful cloud and save them all, but bled out during surgery. They eye JX in JL's arms with deep suspicion.

Once the funeral is over, WWX starts coping by fixating on JX, i.e. he doesn't cope at all and distracts himself. He hovers around JX all the time, won't let him out of his sight, sleeps next to the crib, follows the wet nurses around -- JL wants to stay and help, but he has to go back to LLJ as JC would have wanted so he has to say good bye and go home and grieve by himself. Except the other juniors follow him and stay with him in LL.

WWX stays in YMG, he won't leave LP, not even when LWJ is called back to CR to help LQR with running the sect because LXC is in seclusion again. Their parting is messy, not a break up but not a simple 'traveling for work' split either. LWJ is conflicted between his primal possessive jealousy and his basic decency that understands why this is the way things are. Eventually Granny has to tell him Tadpole needs no more new things, he needs JL to be his tangxiong, who will tell him what it was like to be parented by JC when he's older, who will hug him and tell him he's brilliant and brave, just like his a-die.

Much like with LSZ, WWX is more of a fun uncle than a guardian Bobo, although he does learn how to change a nappy, burp the baby and rock him to sleep. When he's not looking after JX, he's working with the Plum Blossoms on new defenses for the sect, he goes to Conferences and watches the other sect leaders with deep suspicion, waiting for one of them to slip and expose their nefarious schemes for YMJ.

Still, as he gets bigger and goes from baby to toddler to child, JX is a source of great joy for many. He reminds Granny of JC at that age, everything he does is amazing for WWX, who sees so much of JC and JYL in him, and after being involved with his rearing, even from afar, JL decides to find a wife and raise a family, making sure that JX is close with his cousins.

They never stop missing JC, his absence is a physical thing, but JX was a worthy thing to die for, and exactly the sort of thing JC would die for. JX sometimes feels overwhelmed by the feeling he should be filling in all the gaps JC left behind -- especially with WWX who seems to sometimes forget that JX is not JC. However JL, who knows that feeling, makes sure he knows they don't expect it, and if they do, it's not his problem.

As he becomes a teen and goes to CR for lessons, some of his peers are suspicious and nasty to him because of his origins. They don't know whether to call him a bastard or abomination, but YMJ's disciples and then LWJ when he overhears, step in to punish and correct them. WWX returns to the Jingshi so he can be nearby if JX needs him.

JSH runs the sect very well, they don't have the same micromanagement habit of JC, but they helped him build YMJ into the smoothly running machine it is, so they simply continue the pattern, always thinking about how JC would handle a situation before acting. They hold onto the role of protector until JX is 21, allowing him time to mature. With JL now grown and a father, and an experienced sect leader, they keep the balance in the jianghu - not that LXC or NHS are in any way interested in messing that up.

Ultimately JX grows up pretty well, venerating the father who died for him, taking on the lessons of JSH, Granny, LH, WWX, JL and everyone else who helped raise him to become a sect leader JC would be proud off. He looks so like his father, but his personality is much softer, unafraid to show his feelings in a way JC never was. JC would say his son is the better version of him -- the kind his own parents would be proud of.

Meanwhile JGY try to talk with Xichen about marry LWJ with himself, so when LWJ go with the idea (with a broken heart) maybe Xichen will marry WWX and protect her, Xichen proposes to marry LWJ with JGY, she feel really betrayed and leaves.

So, that nigth, LWJ and WWX talk and accepts to leaves their sect with the only man that can protect and both can accepts them

NHS accepts, because he is no stupid, and when two of the most beautiful women of his world proposes to marry him there is just ome thing to do. Accepts

They found them in a Inn naked, so NHS and WWX were hiding behind LWJ, because for me she is always a really tall and strong woman (just think in Tiane Endler physics, I mean her arms)

And then married. WWX was pregnant from A Yuan, Nie heir and later another babies, because she loves be pregnant and be take cared for LWJ and NHS who is a great husband and love a lot his wives in a platonic way. LWY was pregnant just one time, after their marriage, she doesn't really like the sex with NHS even if his husband and wife make all comfortable for her. So LJY born, and yes, he was raised for WWX for the real pain of LQR who just wants LSZ like heir, but Xichen refuses to married and spot his sister's son, all of them, because all of WWX children are from LWJ too.

A) Lan Xichen focused fics. It’s so hard to find fics that centre him.

B) Lan Sizhui focused fics. Mainly him with his dads/ family, but also him remembering his past would be great! Baby or adult A-yuan.

#xiantober Day 3: Xianxian's Parents

WCZ and CSSR have been neighbours with LQR for many years now. They don't particularly get along seeing as CSSR constantly finds ways to prank and tease LQR, but they don't not get along either.

It's amicable enough, to say the least.

Since WY was born, though, they haven't seen as much of each other. Especially the past couple weeks. CSSR has been getting progressively concerned over her favourite neighbour's disappearance and WCZ can only say he agrees. Something has definitely happened.

But they aren't close enough that they could go over and ask. Well, CSSR could and would, but WCZ has reined her in. LQR is a very independent man. If there is stress, they should not add to it. Surprisingly, his wife acquiesced and has opted to wait and see for another few days.

A somewhat frantic knock at the door at 7:15 pm on an unassuming Wednesday brings WCZ out of his thoughts. He opens the door to find none other than LQR. Only instead of being put together, he looks like a frightful mess. He also has two young boys with him.

One boy is held in his arms, coughing and wheezing. The other boy is a small, timid young thing half hiding behind LQR's legs. The boy looks up at WCZ with wide, wet eyes.

"Change," LQR says. "I apologize for the suddenness of this, but could I bother you to watch my nephew?"

WCZ looks down at the small boy once more and watches as he slinks further back behind his uncle's legs. "Of course," he replies, looking back at LQR. "Is there anything else we can do to help?'

LQR shakes his head. "No. No, that is all currently. Thank you."

"It's no problem, A-Ying will love to have a friend to spend time with."

LQR nods. "A-Zhan is a shy one, but I hope your boy can befriend him."

WCZ finds that statement somewhat of a surprise, given their history. Regardless, he nods.

The boy in LQR's arms whimpers and LQR gently rubs his back, swaying from side to side. "I truly am sorry, I have to bring A-Huan to the hospital. I only just suddenly became my nephews' guardian and now this has happened..."

WCZ's eyes widen at that.

"You are doing fine, Qiren. This isn't your fault. We are always here if you need help, you don't have to do this alone."

LQR presses his mouth in a thin line and nods. He takes a shaky breath and turns his attention to little LZ. "A-Zhan, you have to go with WCZ now, okay?"

LZ looks at his uncle and his lip quivers. He grips onto LQR's pants and shakes his tiny head.

LQR sighs. "A-Zhan, please. I need to take your brother to get better but you have to stay here. They have a boy your age, you can make a friend."

"No," LZ says in a quiet voice.

WCZ squats down and looks at LZ. "A-Zhan, it's okay. I know you are scared but your uncle needs to go. It's for your brother, yeah? You want him to get better?" LZ nods slowly. "And you want to help?" LZ nods again, more sure. "Then staying with us is the best way to help."

LZ seems to consider that. He glances from WCZ to LQR to LH and back to WCZ. His face shows trepidation but he slowly releases his uncle's pants and waddles over to WCZ.

WCZ holds a hand out and LZ takes it. When he stands, LQR looks at him with relief. "Thank you, again."

WCZ shakes his head. "It's no trouble. Go."

With a quick nod and a farewell to LZ, LQR leaves with his elder nephew in his grasp.

WCZ steps back into the house with LZ in tow and closes the door. "Well, A-Zhan. How about you come meet my wife and son?"

LZ's lip quivers.

WCZ leads LZ further into the house, making their way up the stairs.

"Baobei? Who was at the door?" CSSR calls out from the washroom.

"It was Qiren," he replies.

"Oho? What did he want?" There's the sound of WY giggling as WCZ reaches the doorway to the washroom.

At the sight of other people, LZ gasps quietly and hides behind WCZ's legs.

The sight of CSSR towelling off WY's hair as he squirms and giggles makes WCZ smile. CSSR turns and flashes him a bright smile but her eyes quickly catch onto the movement of LZ.

"Who's this?"

WCZ crouches down, gently moving LZ out from behind him. "This is A-Zhan," he explains. "He's Qiren's nephew and we are watching him tonight."

At that, WY shoves the towel off his head and gasps loudly when he sees LZ. LZ shrinks back into WCZ's touch. WY smiles and runs to him.

"Hi! I'm Wei Ying! Will you be my friend?"

LZ's eyes widen and he looks up at WCZ, uncertain. WCZ nods with a soft smile. LZ turns back to WY, relaxing slightly. "Mn. I am Lan Zhan," he says quietly.

WY beams and takes LZ's hand. "Come, Zhanzhan! I'll show you my room!"

With that, WY leads LZ out of the washroom and down the hall to his room. LZ follows without a fuss. WCZ smiles and turns his attention back to his wife who is kneeling on the floor. She raised an eyebrow at him.

"Qiren has become the guardian of his two nephews," he explains.

"The eldest needed to go to the hospital so A-Zhan is staying with us for now."

CSSR nods. "I'm glad he reached out to us."

"Me too. I feel that our little A-Ying will make A-Zhan feel more comfortable. It must be hard on the poor boy."

CSSR hums. "I have an idea."

A short while later, things are set up in the livingroom, so WCZ heads upstairs to get the boys. He hears the familiar chatter of his son and when he looks into WY's room he finds LZ sitting on WY's bed, hugging WY's favourite plushy (Tuzi, a white rabbit) tightly to his chest.

WY is chattering on about each and every one of his plushies, explaining their names and stories to LZ before placing them on the bed around LZ. It's the cutest sight and WCZ almost doesn't want to disrupt them.

"Oh! Baba! Can I give Zhanzhan Tuzi?"

WCZ blinks. "Are you sure?"

WY nods quickly. "Tuzi is great at making people feel better and I want Zhanzhan to feel the best!" LZ squeezes Tuzi tighter, resting his face on the rabbit and looking at WY with wide eyes.

WCZ smiles and ruffles his son's hair. "If you're sure, then yes."

WY beams.

"Hear that Zhanzhan?" he exclaims, hopping over to the bed. "You can have Tuzi and Tuzi will make you feel better always!"

LZ nods and sniffles. "Mn. Thank you, Yingying."

WY giggles and bounces up and down.

"A-Ying, A-Zhan, we have a surprise for you downstairs."

The boys both look at him before WY once again grabs LZ's hand and pulls him along. LZ follows easily, Tuzi held tightly in his free hand.

Together, they make their way down into the livingroom where they find it has been transformed into a blanket and pillow fort.

WY gasps loudly, practically vibrating with excitement. LZ's face softens into a look of wonder.

CSSR pops her head out of the fort and smiles. "What are you waiting for? Come on in!"

The boys quickly run over, climbing inside. WCZ follows, settling in behind CSSR.

The boys look around the space in awe. The livingroom is dark but there are string lights illuminating for fort inside. WY plops down on a pile of pillows and gestures for LZ to join him. Tentatively LZ sits down beside WY, hugging Tuzi tightly.

CSSR smirks, placing a blanket on the boys and bringing a tray of snacks over for them. WY smiles and takes a handful of goldfish crackers, but instead of eating them himself, he feeds them to LZ, who accepts them with no fuss. CSSR squeals and settles against WCZ.

"Aren't they the cutest?" she whispers.

WCZ smiles, wrapping an arm around her. "They are."

"Do you boys want to watch a movie?"

There's a hushed conversation between the boys before WY turns to them. "How To Train Your Dragon, please."

CSSR chuckles, getting the movie ready.

"So polite all of a sudden," she teases. "A-Zhan is such a good influence on my little troublemaker."

"Hey!" WY whines. "I'm a good boy!"

"Mn," LZ agrees.

WCZ and CSSR melt. "You are, A-Ying," he assures his son. WY nods and turns his attention back to LZ.

The boys watch the movie with rapt attention, only pulling their gaze away to feed eachother snacks. As the movie goes on, they begin to droop, cuddling into eachother more and more until CSSR looks over and gasps quietly, getting WCZ's attention.

The two boys are fast asleep.

They are curled up, facing eachother, and holding eachother close with Tuzi in the middle of them. CSSR coos and takes her phone out to take a multitude of photos. WCZ smiles to himself.

He hopes LQR and LH are doing well, but he is thankful WY and LZ got to meet.

He knows that they will continue to be good friends as the years go on.

It's not until WCZ is standing in front of a crown at WY and LZ's wedding that he realizes just how right and yet, how wrong he was. He smiles as he regales the crowd with the story of how his sons met.

Behind him, the photo of them curled up together asleep is shown on a large screen.

He looks over to his sons, smiling at the sight of them curled into eachother even now, so happy on their wedding day.

He's so proud of the men they have become.

A (probably rambling) Lan Qiren Appreciation Post

Ok, let me start by saying I'm fully aware that he isn't a "perfect" person. He is a human and comes with human flaws, however, I often find that he gets reduced to nothing but rules and anger, which in my opinion isn't fair. Many seem to forget all the things he has gone through and accomplished, seeing only a strict man obsessed with rules and filled with anger, a hindrance for his nephew and his husband. It's true that he is strict and does like the rules, just as he often appears angry too, but that's not all he is.

(Chapters the "facts" come from are ch. 64, 68, 79, 111 and 117.)

Anyway, let's start from the beginning. We all know Lan Qiren is the younger brother of Qingheng-jun (QHJ), the previous Lan sect leader. It's fair to assume that QHJ was trained and moulded to become a sect leader from childhood, becoming a renowned cultivator with an impressive reputation from an early age, so I bet everyone assumed he'd be a great sect leader, one who would fulfil his duty well. Then, at twenty, he suddenly announces his marriage and goes into seclusion, pretty much throwing all the responsibilities of a sect leader on his younger brother, Lan Qiren, overnight. At this time, LQR is at the oldest nineteen (though I hc him as 18), but since we don't know the actual age gap between QHJ and LQR, we can't know for sure how old he is. However, he is a teen that suddenly finds himself being a sect leader in everything but name. Not only that, he pretty much lost his brother too, since QHJ went into seclusion and unless he visited him there (if it was even allowed), he wouldn't see him.

Like this isn't enough, he becomes an uncle twice within a few years (here too, we don't know the exact age gap between LXC and LWJ, as well as how long after the marriage LXC was born). Although the babies are raised by others at first, they are handed over to LQR "once old enough to be taught and raised", so LQR was their de facto parental figure. And suddenly LQR has a sect to run and two sect heirs to raise and he himself is most likely still under 25. He also wasn't trained for this the same way QHJ was, but the Gusu Lan Sect still flourishes. Yes, it was most likely already doing well before him, but he continued that and also ended up becoming a renowned teacher. On top of that he raised two boys into becoming two of the cultivation world's most renowned members, and let's be honest, both LXC and LWJ are good people. If LQR was such a horrible parental figure, then I doubt both of them would've turned out as well as they do. I'm not saying he's doing everything perfectly (no parents or parental figures ever do), but he did well.

Yes, he was strict with them and the reason was how their mother's crime had caused QHJ to throw away his life (as well as abandoning his duty) and LQR feared his nephews might do the same thing unless he was strict with them. In other words, he didn't want them to do something impulsive that would then ruin their chance of happiness (and maybe because it might also lead them to lose the ability to be with their family, like for QHJ). It might not be the best way to show care, but for a Lan who saw his accomplished brother throw away everything for a woman that didn't return his love, it makes sense. He also wouldn't be the only uncle who shows affection through irritation and scolding, would he? (Yes, Jiang Wanyin, I'm looking at you.)

Another thing that's good to keep in mind is that we often get to see LQR from WWX's point of view, unless someone is speaking about LQR, and WWX is chaos, so obviously anything strict will appear stricter. I don't say that's necessarily the truth, but it might be good to keep in mind.

Let's continue to a less than happy part, LWJ hiding WWX. Firstly, it was LXC who fetched LQR and the elders out of worry, but LQR too was worried, albeit showing it as frustration. I don't think corporal punishment is okay, however in this world, it is and LWJ did severely injure 33 elders of his clan, in the view of that, the punishment does make sense. It also makes sense that LQR is the one sentencing the punishment, since it's only him or LXC who can do it and I believe that LQR doesn't want LXC to have to punish his own brother. I do not see this as LQR not caring about his nephew, as I know many do. I fully believe that whipping LWJ did emotionally hurt LQR, but rules are rules.

Time for WWX's return. As we all know, LQR falls into a coma after trying to play Evocation for NMJ's arm and LXC later states to WWX after they return from the Cultivation Conference that LQR has just woken up. I read somewhere that it was about a month between Evocation and the Cultivation Conference, meaning that LQR has been in a coma for 3-4 weeks. No matter your golden core, that got to take a toll on you, which seems to be true as he is the one leading the Lans during the second siege of the Burial Mounds and he "stood before the crowd, looking considerably more aged. There were even streaks of white in his hair." Yes, this might be due to the stress of finding out that one of his nephews is with the returned WWX and the other nephew is gone (in the claws of JGY), plus the fact that Lan Juniors have been kidnapped. However, if this were the case, he would've aged a lot during the Sunshot Campaign and the First Siege of the Burial Mounds. I firmly believe it's the resentful energy that put him into a coma that took its toll on him. Anyway, no matter why, here he is, maybe a week or so after waking up after a nearly month long coma, leading a group of Lan cultivators. And no, it's not just to fetch LWJ, because he shows care for those under his command:

"Lan Qiren hadn’t wanted to go in, at first. He would rather have remained outside and fought until the bitter end. However, he was not waging this battle alone—there were many Lan and Jin Clan cultivators under his command, and they were not the main force in the fight. He did not want to treat the lives of those disciples with such disregard. If there was a thread of hope for survival, he was compelled to seize it."

As stated later, LQR is not a reckless man. He will do what the rules say is right and what will benefit the most people, even if he disagrees on a personal level (in this case wanting to fight, but knowing others might die if he does, since they would remain as well). He is also not so proud and petty that he won't let WWX speak his mind, instead he remains silent and listens. Many others would not.

He then again, despite probably not being in full strength since the coma and definitely not from all the fighting he's already done and without spiritual power, charges in with killing force to protect people when Su She breaks the barrier into the cave and the fierce corpses attack a again. Though this clearly comes with a prise as he afterwards coughs up a lot of blood and needs to mediate to regulate his breathing (and since LWJ is willing to give him spiritual energy, I have a feeling it's a tad worse than he wants to tell, but since his core is still sealed off, LWJ giving him qi would not help anyway, as LQR states himself).

Now to the aftermath of Guanyin Temple. He asks LXC what's the matter with him and LXC says he doesn't want to talk about it. LQR could press him, he probably could force him to tell him, but he doesn't. Yes he is angry, but the novel also declares that "both were now sources of worry" and it is after also saying that "neither of these two previously flawless pupils would heed him anymore", but I don't think it's just about smudged reputation or control that has him worried. I do believe he is genuinely worried that LXC and LWJ have thrown away their lives. The way he speaks and the way he's irritated with the situation shows signs of someone who acts with anger when stressed (similar to JC). I'm not saying this is the best way to react, but it is a part of our fight or flight reaction. We also can't forget that he did see his brother throw away his life due to an impulse decision and breaking the rules, a life that seems to have been generally happy before that.

And to end it all, after the family banquet:

"Wei Wuxian stroked his chin. If that was the case, they couldn’t blame Lan Qiren for punishing them like this. The man loathed wickedness in all forms. In fact, to be copying texts while doing handstands…they were getting off pretty light."

This is the juniors getting punished for going night-hunting with Wen Ning and if WWX thinks they're getting off pretty lightly, then they most likely are. To me this shows that although LQR adds rules and follows them, he does know there is a degree to them. He knows Wen Ning wouldn't hurt the juniors and that he isn't really evil or bad, but the rules state they shouldn't spend time with him, so he has to punish them, so he does so in a way that clearly is a punishment, but also not as harsh as it technically should be.

This became a long post. All in all, Lan Qiren is more than anger and strictness. He does not lack compassion, he does care about his nephews and I think people forget everything he has gone through and accomplished and that he deserves some more love and recognition (and not to only being the butt of the joke).

Real talk, was there ever anything that could’ve been changed early on to prevent LWJ from having terminal baby brother syndrome and making his sibling pair with LXC more even, or was he always doomed to be familial emotionally stunted by the narrative from the start? 🤔

i mean, my gut says 'nah, probably not,' but i also will readily admit that i haven't spent as much time mulling over lan wangji's character as i have lan xichen's, so i am probably not the best person to ask!! @lansplaining would have way more interesting things to say on this topic than i would. but imo i think for lwj to have become a different kind of baby brother, lxc would also have had to grow into a very different sort of older brother. maybe if they'd both been able to spend any meaningful time with their parents at all beyond their very early childhood? but even that wouldn't negate the expectations of sect leadership that lxc would always grow up expecting to shoulder one day. and that doesn't even touch on, you know /gestures @ lqr's true love, the wall of discipline and its 3,000 rules

Jc learned young that he would either be ignored or he would be held to a high standard no child should be held to (and if he failed he would be scolded and punished). He was seemingly not what his father was looking for, while he was not enough for what his mother wanted (wants that were fuelled by the way his father would put more attention and care into wwx). 

It was hard to have all this on his small shoulders and he had no one to help him. 

Then came lqr. He was an acquaintance of the family and he had already seen him many times in the past. The man slowly entered his life when jc would often be forgotten after school, when wwx had school club activities and him not (his mother wouldn’t allow it, as it could “distract him too much from his studies”). Lqr couldn’t let a child wait outside (in the rain!) when he could just give him a hand. Jc had been rather shy to accept his help, apologising many times for “being a bother” to him. He tried calling jfm (since, from jc words, yzy was away for work). After the fourth try, he could see how anxious and embarrassed jc seemed to be, as if it was his fault his father had forgotten about him or something. 

He took a look at lwj and lxc sitting in his car, probably starting to be hungry after their own school club activities. He simply suggested taking jc home until he could contact his parents, assuming the jiang wouldn’t mind since they already knew him (and he just /couldn’t/ leave a child alone, in the rain, when it was getting too late for one to be out alone). 

Of course, once home he tried contacting his parents, /again/, while the children were eating, jc sitting shyly while lxc was trying to calm his nerves by talking to him. He was thankful to be able to easily calm down his anger because when he finally reached jfm he was rather angry. At last, the boy was finally able to go home. 

But then it repeated the next week and many other times. It actually became so common that lwj would go and look for jc after his club activities, just to make sure he wasn’t still at school (which actually was often). 

So trips to lqr over his years of primary school were rather common and jc actually became accustomed to the sets of rules the man had in his household. It was really different from the jiang household, but he actually really liked it there. He wasn’t ignored or compared to someone else all the time. Lqr seemed to actually genuinely care about how things were going for him. 

This actually brought many things for more than jc. Jc picked up on some of the lans habits (especially at the table). Jc was the reason lqr actually had some spices in his kitchen. He had seen jc reaction to his food, but had clearly kept his opinion on how bland it was probably to him (he knew the jiang were strong on spices). He had wanted to do a little something that could maybe remind him of home. It was probably not the same, but it was the best he could do when his own tongue was not used to spice anymore. 

Jc was still carrying his silver bell around, a family tradition and a luck charm, which he had given to lqr at some point (the man had felt touched by the action, he knew they were used by the jiang family and given to people they saw as close to them). But he also ended up carrying a jade token around Twin with the bell. He had seemed so honoured and overjoyed to be given one. 

When jc finally entered junior middle school, he was encouraged by lqr to join the swimming club. He had heard how much the boy like to swim. Of course, this had caused some ruckus at home, especially from yzy, but jc had promised this would not affect his grades and showed just that. 

Jc’s junior and senior middle school years were where his habits started to lean a bit more towards the lans one, seeing how often he was over. He had pretty much given up on getting any of his father's affection, where most of his interaction with his mother (when she was not away for work, probably to stay away from jfm) was about his grades and how he should be doing better. Jyl was often with her fiance, so she couldn’t be around as much as before. His relationship with wwx had become a bit strained, but less because of wwx action, but because of how much he was always pitted against him for everything. 

He was instead finding all his acceptance and love over at lqr house, where the man would support him in his studies and help him out the same way he would do for his nephew (at some point some wondered if the man had adopted a son). If he was ever in trouble, he /knew/ the man would be ready to come to his acceptance and love over at lqr house, where the man would support him in his studies and help him out the same way he would do for his nephew (at some point some wondered if the man had adopted a son). It is also probably why it was no surprise when jc came out to lqr first (or at least admitted not being sure if he was really as straight as he had always thought). Lqr was really accepting and jc had nearly felt like this was not the first time he ever had this conversation. But it was comforting to know someone who knew about it now and was accepting of it. 

Before they knew it, graduation came and the jiang family realise just how far they had drifted from jc, who seemed closer to lxc and lqr who were there than either of his parents. Since when was their son this smiling and bright? Where had all this confidence come from? 

The connection with his parent became a bit more strained when he affirmed, he was not going to study in yunmeng what they wanted him to do (so he could take over the company), but rather something he found much more interesting back in gusu. The only one who seemed genuinely happy about his choice was wwx, who said he was happy to hear jc was also going to be studying at gusu with him (which left jfm with no actual heir for his company other than jyl). 

Of course, the reaction was absolutely different over at the lan household, lqr was more than happy to hear he had been accepted at gusu college, and both lwj and lxc suggested going out to celebrate it. Jc had found another family and his parents were now too late to the game. 

(a little + is if wwx and jc manage to rebuild a better relationship, this time with no one to put them in some kind of invisible competition between them)

ep45 (1/2): the wen family reunion, at long last

and getting RIGHT into it here's jc offering jin ling zidian in one of the most straightforward handling of symbolism on the show. but jin ling says NO to the cycle of violence and runs into the fray, chasing after lan sizhui. his friend!

of course jc is distressed by this because he thinks this is a one-way ticket to being dead but good old jin ling doesn't listen

ohh wwx cutting himself (ouch!) on the sword and then staring at it knowing what he has to do and the lans all witnessing. lqr witnessing. I have to believe that means something

he looks SO cool. watching him and lwj seamlessly work together while fighting is so cool. oh yeah and he's wearing white underthings (scandalous!)

I really like jc in this episode. he shows major signs of Cracking, and I've always liked his uncontrollable sobbing the best. right now he looks like he has indigestion but I think that's just from hearing so many people talk about wwx

I complain a lot about lsz being boring but you will never hear that complaint for this scene. lsz being polite and sweet and open and friendly to wen ning had me choking up. for one, nobody talks to wen ning so kindly. for another...THAT'S HIS FAMILY!

and wen ning looks so excited during this scene! I think yb did a really good job of keeping his reactions subdued and awkward, which is exactly how wen ning emotes

HE'S SO HAPPY 😭 THAT'S LITTLE A-YUAN HE'S OKAY!!!

meanwhile jl is edging ever closer to a breakdown himself on account of being a very stressed out little boy laboring under the influence of a heavily patriarchal and revenge-happy society who just learned his new favorite person apparently murdered both his parents using the guy standing right in front of him

oh my GOD he nails this. I'm crying. look at how touched, how moved, how emotional this is making him. this is a piece of himself that he's never understood!!! his family!!! his past!!

this scene was so funny in the book iirc wwx pretended to be passed out "as a joke" (so lwj would cradle him in his strong arms) and then when lwj did just that he got all embarassed
