Just finished season 6 of OITNB so here are some random thoughts. Just gonna put it under a cut in case spoilers (which I doubt cause this has been out for 5 years lol) but also for those who don’t care and just want to easily scroll by :)

• Carol and Barb were much more interesting than any of the new characters they introduced. Part of me wishes they were still gonna be in season 7, but another part of me is fine with them not being in it, because what would they have done with them/how would they have been utilized in a way we haven’t already seen? Also, their entire flashlacks/backstory could’ve been a movie. That whole scene where they murdered their sister was so messed up, I keep thinking about it from time to time since I watched it. As always, so impressed with the casting of the younger and older selves looking alike.

• What they did to Blanca was so cruel!!! The only time I teared up this season!!

• I liked when the scenes were juxtaposed to show the inequality and unfairness of the Justice system with Piper and Taystee (Piper getting released early when she originally wasn’t going to, compared with Taystee being found guilty of a murder she didn’t commit.) I feel so bad for Taystee and I’m so glad Caputo tried to help her. I hope he keeps fighting and the guy that actually killed Piscatella goes down.

• Nicky is still my favorite. I need more of her and Red. However I don’t really like how they wrote Red this season? Like she acted so brashly when she attacked Frieda and it’s like I get it, Frieda threw Red under the bus, but she chose to attack Frieda for stealing 10 years of her life she could have spent with her grandkids…right before she was going to visit her grandkids.

• If “Badison” is in season 7 I really do not think I will not watch. Or at least mute her scenes. Out of all the prisoners on this show I could always name at least one redeeming/positive thing about them, or at least tolerate their screen presence. I could not do either of those things for Badison. Every time she was on screen I wanted to start clawing at the wall like a feral cat. No offense to the actress, but please don’t make me look or hear her ever again.

"Murphy! Pack your things your moving to C-block!" Hellman shouted my eyes widened in shock and I turned and saw one of my best friends Daya looking back at me with the same expression.

"W- what for?!" I asked alarmed he just said nothing and stood at the gate with his arms crossed I sighed and got up from the table and walked towards me and Barbra's shared cell.

I felt Barbra's gaze on me as I started packing my things "and just where are you goin?" She asked putting down a small box of coke she was snorting.

"I'm leaving" I muttered and she quickly shot up a look of disbelief.

"Like hell you are" she snorted and stood up.

I mean me moving to C- block wouldn't have been so bad because to be honest I felt like Barbra was only using me because I used to be a drug seller my business was spreading through about ten states before I was finally caught.

I had feelings for the older women for a while bit she made it bluntly obvious that she was straight unlike her four eyed sister Carol.

See she was the reason why I was scared to move to C-block because I'f Barbra was bad Carol was extremely worse the true definition of a sociopath and has been trying to kill her older sister for the past 30 years.

And sense I was one of her right hands Carol knew exactly who I was.

I had only saw her about three times when I was working the janitor job and had to go into C-block with other inmates to clean but aside from her scary demeanor she was gorgeous.

"I can't do anything about it Barb" I stated packing the rest of my things she said nothing else and sighed.

I nervously looked down at my feet but gasped a little when I felt arms wrap around my small frame "stay safe l/n" she said in a firm but soft tone I smiled and hugged her back.

"I will" I said and exited the cell I heard some people say goodbye and I waved to them back before I heard the gates open and I was escorted out will hellman.

I felt eyes burning into me as I entered C-block I never liked being the center of attention and felt extremely uncomfortable.

"Alrighy Murphy your in Cell 1-03 good luck" he stated with a smirk before walking off.

"Well, well, well look who we have here!" I sighed when I heard that familiar Boston accent I turned and saw my older cousin Madison walking towards me with her girls trailing behind her.

Me and Madison never had the best relationship she had horrible anger issues and always tried to beat me up and play pranks on me everytime I visited just because she got bullied at school.

But I had always been stronger than her despite me being pretty small and it always ended with me beating her ass and her throwing another tantrum she was always a huge baby.

"If it isn't my cutie little cousin" she chuckled and her girls followed.

I rolled my eyes and placed my stuff down "Madison" I stated crossing my arms.

"That's Badison to you" she grunted with a sarcastic smile.

"Ok then don't call me your cousin cause it's embarrassing being related to you fartison" I said knowing how much that nickname hurt her back then heard one of her girls snicker silently but one look from Madison shut her up real quick.

I grabbed my stuff and walked forward unaware of Madison sticking her foot out to trip me I stumbled forward but quickly caught myself and ended up doing a front flip back onto my two legs.

Some people gasped and I fixed my clothes before giving my cousin a glare "5 years later and I still outsmart you with that move grow up Madison" I said and walked off.

I looked to my right and saw Carol looking at me with a sharp gaze but I caught an ounce of curiosity in it as well I quickly looked away and walked towards my designated cell.

When I got inside I saw that the bottom bunk was occupied so I put my stuff on the top one.

"Murphy huh?" I turned around and tensed up seeing Carol leaning against the door with a smirk.

"Yeah and not proud of it" I stated changing out of my beige clothes and into the dark blue uniform not even caring about the fact I'm being watched.

"So you must be the little toy who was always running behind my sister" she said walking closer to me and I backed up a little.

"Wouldn't say that more of a tough toy" I said grunting a little when my back met the wall she put her hands on either side of my head and leaned closer to my face to the point I could smell her candied breathe.

"Well now your in my block and the way I see it you have two choices join me and live or you don't so what's it gonna be princess?" she asked.

"Fine" I said and she smirked backing up from me and walking out of the the cell like nothing happened.

After that day I started working for Carol I felt pretty guilty doing it tho since I was loyal to Barb for so long and my feelings for her still hasn't faded.

But at the same time me and Carol started to get closer and I started to form feelings for her Madison started to get jealous since I was basically taking her place and it was quite amusing to say the least.

The longer I worked the Carol the more my feelings for her grew and aside from the slight flirting we do I didn't think she got the message or the idea that I had a crush on her.

"Hey Carol" I asked looking up from my magazine and she did the same.

"Yeah?" She asked.

"Have you ever been in love before?" I asked she raised an eyebrow before letting out a snicker.

"Hell no love is bullshit" I felt relived that she didn't like anyone else but upset that she thought that way about it.

"Bull-true" I said back and she gave me a suprised look before rolling her eyes.

"You've been around me too much" she muttered under her breathe and I chuckled.

"But seriously love isn't bullshit it's a wonderful thing to feel the best thing to feel" I said and she gave me a puzzled gaze.

"Why are you even talking about this I mean other than the fact that you had a little sexual crush on my crack head sister who mind you is straighter than a zipline" she said putting her magazine down.

"Ok one I don't like her any more I like someone else-"

"Oh do you now?" She asked.

I felt my face heat up a little and I nodded "as a matter of fact I do" I said.

"Well then who is it doll?"

I looked into her striking blue eyes that were waiting for an answer and I took a deep breathe.

'Now or never' I thought and I leaned forward cupping both of her cheeks and pressing my lips against hers.

I felt kinda scared when she didn't kiss back but it vanished when she wrapped her arms around my waist and pulled me onto her lap.

I wrapped my hands in her hair making sure to not mess it up.

Within seconds she was ontop of me with a smug look.

Watched the episode where the viewer finds out why Carol and Barb are in prison and... lots of wasted potential there.

I'm enjoying the characters (the older versions of them anyway), but the season's portrayal of gangs is naive.

There is no way that these two would become top dogs in Max, because people that harm children get eaten by the actual top dogs upon arrival.

(Speaking of child related crimes, I would have loved to see Beth's story--how she ended up becoming Medea--instead of Badison's "she was bullied as a child so she became one herself.")

There is no way that anyone would take them seriously with such incompetent lapdogs: Badison, the high school bully that possesses no skills whatsoever (she is funny though even though no one appreciates it), and Daddy, the cornball trafficker who trusted an addict to bring drugs into the prison.

Had they wanted to make them scarier, they could have at least thrown some flashbacks where the two were total badasses in prison so we could see how they got to the top of the food chain or how they became drug bosses in the first place since they had no idea about drugs.

Carol is supposed to be a charming murderer with sociopathic traits (more or less a young Villanelle), sure, but she is way too irrational and not smart or manipulative enough.

Barb, who appears more ~normal and likeable but is just as unhinged as her sister, is not intidimating, charming or smart enough either.

Also, it took them 3 decades to come up with a good plan to murder each other? And no one challenged their authority?

I was sitting with Carol at the table, playing cards with her and her girls, as we watched the cookies, making sure they didn't do anything smart.

"Rec time!" Hellman called out.

"Creech, Brock, Badison, and Tang go." Carol announced, never looking up from her cards. The girl nodded, getting up, but Badison stood her ground with a look of disbelief from the table.

"Hey! What about Ms. Sunshine Sugar Britches over here?" She pointed it out, giving me a hard look. Badison always hated me when I first joined Carol's gang since I got a lot of attention from Carol.

Me and her started dating not long ago, but obviously in secret since she one didn't want to seem weak and two didn't want Barbra to find out and try to plan a hit on me. It was sweet to know she cared.

But I knew I could take care of myself, despite my calm nature.

"Are you fucking questioning me?" Carol sneered up at the plump blonde.

"No but-"

"Exactly what she does is none of your business, so get your pasty white ass into that rec room," Carol said with a pointed glare, and Badsion nodded, scurrying away, but not before giving me another glare.

I rolled my eyes and placed my cards down.

"Hey, Care; maybe I should go. I mean, maybe I could find a way to get Luschek to update the dance class better," I informed her.

She raised a brow and gave me a slight side eye. She knew about my little dance career before I was incarcerated, and she also knew I wanted to join the dance class.

"They're not going to change the rules, doll. This place is a shithole. We don't deserve stuff like that," she said.

"Hey, if Chapman can bring back kickball, who's to say I can't change the dance class and make it more fun for the inmates here?" I replied.

She let out a deep sigh and placed her cards down.

"You're too pure for this place," she mumbled, and I rubbed the back of my neck, hiding my small smile.

"Fine, but if you see any Dick Block bitches,"

"Run back here as fast as I can. I know, thanks, Care," I said, squeezing her hand in acknowledgement before getting up and walking towards Rec, missing the small smile on her face while I walked out of the gates.

I walked through the halls, hearing the sounds of chatter and small music coming from the rec room. When I got in, I saw C and D blocks following the lead of Luschek's dances.

I feel bad for him because he's so kind, despite being a CO, and he tried his best to make good dances for both blocks, but they just ridicule him all the time.

I stepped in and caught the eye of Creech. She smirked and tapped Badison on the shoulder, pointing her in my direction. When Badison saw me, she smirked and walked up to me, her girls following after her.

"Well, well, well, look who we have here, Ms. Sunshine," she said loudly, catching everyone else's attention in the room. She always had to have a loud mouth.

"Hi Badison," I said calmly.

"Funny seeing you here; I thought you would be clinging to Carol like a rotten leech," she snickered out.

"Your the same exact way," I snapped back, and she gave me a glare, stepping closer towards me, but I held my ground firmly.

"What did you say?"

"You heard what I said? Now I'm not trying to start any trouble; I'm just trying to dance the stress away and not worry about people like you."

"Well, then show us what you got," she challenged, her smirk forming again.

"Fine," I said with the same challenging look. I walked up to the front and reached my hand out.

"May I?" I said, giving him a slightly pleading look, and he let out a deep sigh and gave me the phone. I gave him a thankful look and typed in the song before putting the phone down.

I tied my long hair into a high ponytail and waited for the beat to come.

When I was finished, cheers flooded the whole room, and I smiled, giving a slight bow.

"You have amazing moves, L/N," Luschek said. I laughed and wiped the sweat off my forehead.

"Thanks. I have been dancing since I was four years old, but I didn't really come here to show off. I also came here to ask that since Chapman brought kickball back, I was wondering if maybe we can use real music for the dance classes and if we could maybe come up with a choreography for the kickball championship?."

"Hmm, I'll see what the warden thinks about this, but until then, you can lead the way."

"Thank you!" I said it with excitement, and everyone cheered with me.

"Alright, inmates, rec time is over. See you guys tomorrow." As we all started to leave the room, I heard a voice behind me.

"Not bad, L/N," Badison said, walking beside me. I sighed and rolled my eyes a little, hearing the sarcasm in her voice.

"Thanks, Badison," I said back with a fake smile.

"Nice moves, baby doll." Me and Badison snapped our heads to the sound and saw Carol leaning against the wall with a smirk.

I felt a blush cloud up my cheeks, and I held my hands behind my back, rocking on my feet.

"Oh, thanks, Carol."

I used her real name, knowing how much she hated it when I used her nickname around people.

"Yes, we crushed it!" Badison laughed, wrapping an arm around my shoulder.

Me and Carol exchanged annoying glances, and I shrugged her arm off of me and walked away with Carol, hearing Badison make jokes behind us.

"I still wonder why you picked her as your right hand," I whispered to her.

"She's got her moves, Doll, just like you have yours," she said.

"Now that I've seen what I needed to see, let's see how those hips move in the bed," she whispered in my ear. I felt my face heat up as she gave me a wide smirk and walked off to C-block.

"Come on, doll!" She called out, and I raced after her without hesitation.

So I started watching the 6th season of OITNB and it does indeed look like an improvement over the mess that was season 5. Phew.

Loving the drama with the OGs having to snitch on each other so that they won't get more time.

Red forgiving Nicky for fucking her over? [cries in a corner]

Have yet to feel bad about Frieda for doing the same though, because you don't see her hurting or feeling remorse. Unlike Nicky, she barely hesitates. Checks out. She's a survivor.

I still love Maria (pretty sure it's because the actress is really good no matter how bad the script gets), but can't blame Gloria for getting revenge. Can't blame Blanca for turning on her either.

What pained me a lot was seeing Cindy implicate Taystee. We had already known that Cindy is selfish and a coward, but this season and her new flashbacks really drive that point home. A really nice touch that she was the one to hug Tasha during her breakdown in front of Piscatella (season 5 finale).

Why is Alex not questioned about the events in the pool though? Does that happen in the background?

Moreover, it's a delight to see the OGs (Flaca, Cindy, Lorna, Daya etc.) interacting now that their cliques are not a thing anymore.

Moving on.

A thing that feels forced to me: Red losing all sense of control when she sees Frieda and thus missing the opportunity to meet her grandchildren for the first time. Like, come on. That only happens to trigger the "SHU is cruel and gives you dementia" ending, because it makes no fucking sense.

Red's s6 characterization is so inconsistent with her s1-s4 counterpart's, who played the long game and did not make such impulsive/hasty decisions.

Not counting s5 Red, because almost every character (except for Tasha, Gloria, Soso and Sophia) was an exaggerated caricature of themselves during season 5.

Another lady whose characterization is off? Lorna's, who thinks that joining a gang is good for her baby. Antidepressants (paroxetine) do have side effects, but do not give you a personality transplant.

"Don't look at me. I'm crazy, but not Florida crazy." Oh, baby.

That's the only reason they kept her there in season 6, because she adds literally nothing to the story.

Now, as for the new characters,

Love the guard who used to be Tasha's friend and Lorna's bunkmate. Hope they both get their own background episodes, because they're the most interesting ones.

Most of the other guards seem pretty bland in comparison--cheap repetitions of previous COs, e.g., Hellman is Humps no. 2.

A good thing that Artesian is back though. She's no Fisher or Wanda, but compared to the rest of the COs... Can't wait to see her PTSD episode.

Why is the show trying to make Dixon, the guard who compared Poussey's murder to breaking a chair and murdered several people and also a girl after he had sex with her because her loved ones "would kill her anyway," goofy and lovable all of a sudden? Isn't the woobification of Tiffany's rapist enough?

I like the "crazy baby killer" (Piper's bunkmate) and want to know what turned her into Medea.

All the new inmate villains (Carol, Barb, Badison & Annalisa) are so cartoonish and over the top. Waiting to see if they'll get any depth, but I'm sensing that the baddies on this show peaked at Vee. Even Piscatella seems more nuanced in comparison.

I'm struggling to see what people saw in Carol... that she's pretty? The older actress is ok, but the younger one's acting is, um, how to put this delicately? Not ideal.

Badison has some funny lines, but she's more of a tryhard high school bully than a compelling antagonist. Waiting to see if that's intentional or not.

Annalisa is so annoying and unnecessary. Could definitely do without her. Glad to know that Lorna attacks her before being moved to Florida honestly.

"Daddy" is so physically unimposing that I find it hard to buy he* is the protector of the block. Androgyny on its own isn't enough. Waiting to see if he'll get some development, because for the time being, it looks like he's Stella no. 2: there to look hot despite the subpar acting and personality of a spoon. But I suppose he's there to trigger Daya's kingpin arc and drug addiction. My point? Missing Boo hours.

*Not sure what pronouns I should use (Annalisa says "he"), because it's not clear to me whether "Daddy" is a trans guy, nonbinary or a cis masc lesbian.

Moving on again.

I found the opening with Suzanne's hallucinations charming yet a bit out of place.

The thing is, S1-S3 were more of a comedy than a drama. S4 was the turning point and the show became more of a drama than a comedy.

Season 5 should have committed to drama, but unfortunately tried to balance the two and stumbled.

Season 6 is another attempt at balancing the two.

Nicky remains funny, but the lines lack the spark and wit of her pre-s5 ones. Maybe that can be explained due to the "We're all in Max now" development, maybe it's due to the new writers interpreting her differently.

Something is missing there for sure and is definitely not the "I'm a player, but suddenly stopped chasing women" bit.

Piper keeps asking for Alex ("a broken record" like Daya says) and then spends her time joking about their wedding. What else is new with these two?

What else indeed. Hm.

Where the hell is Sophia? I know she gets out in the finale, but in the meantime, where is she? We barely saw her in season 5 after 2 interactions with Gloria.

Oh, last but not least, missing Soso and Chang hours.

Not missing Leanne and Angie at all hours. Too bad that they replaced them with equally irritating characters.
