I just can't believe Guilty Gear has Queensryche, Skid Row, BAL-SAGOTH, DOKKEN????, fuckin STRYPER????????, and Freddie Mercury Solo Album™️ references like, this is the only thing I've ever been into where I just know every reference they make all of the time. Who tf else is putting Raven (UK) references in their video games besides Daisuke Ishiwatari

Thinking some more about how I wish I could tag things with musical notation. Although I *want* to be able to do it, I think it's a power I probably *shouldn't* have, because (setting aside the fact that I can't actually read music) I would start tagging everything with tunes from songs that I personally associate with whatever I'm posting, but these associations would be completely opaque to anyone else. And half my tags are already an incomprehensible mess of inside jokes with myself. I forgot until this very moment that I was tagging things with planetary correspondences for a bit there.

Bisogna subito dire una cosa: che nonostante i Nokturnal Mortum siano (diventati ?) dei nazi di merda, nel 96-97 erano molto più impegnati ad ispirarsi ai grandi del black metal norvegese per creare un loro stile personale prima di infognarsi nei più bassi ranghi della politica. Hanno fatto di tutto – come i Graveland – hanno sostituito le croci rovesciate con le svastiche, hanno abusato delle rune "odal" per poi ripiegare sui martelli di Thor e sul paganesimo norreno (come se avesse davvero messo delle radici se non solo ed esclusivamente per il fatto delle guardie variaghe al servizio di Kiev, ma siamo davvero troppo oltre la stessa cristianizzazione dei vichinghi)… vabé non è né il caso di parlare di Storia né dell’inclinamento politico di Varggoth e soci altrimenti la recensione si chiuderebbe qui.

La cosa curiosa che ho notato solo quando ho acquistato il vinile di Lunar Poetry è che il primo logo dei Nokturnal Mortum celava in mezzo ai suoi ghirigori delle rose (!!!). E questo in realtà ha un suo senso, perché prima di legare il black metal al folk ucraino con il successivo Goat Horns, qui, nel 1996, le influenze principali erano chiaramente gli Emperor e i Cradle of Filth. Anche se ci sono tratti di folk (soprattutto nelle melodie e nei vocalismi di "Perun’s Celestial Silver") qui si sente tanto di quel gothic black metal che aveva mutato dai Dimmu Borgir ai Tristania ai Mactätus e altri… spesso nel corso dei brani si sente perfino il tamburello che accompagna chitarre e tastiere. Per quanto a volte le tastiere rasentano il kitsch, questo è possibile solo in quanto la ricerca della melodia è perenne e a volte lodevole – considerando soprattutto che questo è un demo.

"Perun’s Celestial Silver" ha tanto dei Bal Sagoth quanto degli Iron Maiden e dei Mercyful Fate; spesso le tastiere diventano lo strumento principale mentre le chitarre rimangono zanzarose ma sempre su due piani ben diversi e udibili… e spesso partono pure degli assoli tipicamente heavy ("... and Winter Becomes"). Questo meraviglioso inno alla notte è stato ristampato tante volte, dalla The End Records, dalla ucraina Oriana e infine dall’Osmose; è stato remixato e nel 2022 è stato perfino ri-registrato col nome di To Lunar Poetry (До лунарної поезії). A me piace ancora ascoltarlo nella sua prima forma, grezza e pura; ma soprattutto libera dalle successive prese di posizione.

Why does Guilty Gear, of ALL THINGS, have a reference to 5,300 monthly Spotify listeners, top YT album having 3,000 views, band with the song title "The Dark Liege of Chaos Is Unleashed at the Ensorcelled Shrine of A'zura Kai (The Splendour of a Thousand Swords Gleaming Beneath the Blazon of the Hyperborean Empire: Part II)" British symphonic black metal band BAL-SAGOTH in it????? I have NEVER. EVER. seen anyone else who knew about this band. Ever. I don't even remember how I first found them.
