Nancy Spungen and Johnny Rotten
Photo Nancy Spungen and Johnny Rotten at Ivanhoe, Manchester Road, Huddersfield, 1977.
photo history:
It was 1977, I had just finished filming Derek Jarman’s ‘Jubilee’ when I decided to visit an old friend of mine – Rae Spencer-Cullen – in New York. In addition to acting I also used to write articles for the glossy punk magazine “Delux” edited by Willy Daly and Duncan Fallowell. Upon mentioning I was off to New York, Duncan exclaimed, “Why don’t you try and get an interview with Andy Warhol for the magazine?”
I arrived in New York and rang ‘The Factory’. I was immediately invited down to meet Warhol as he was very interested to find out about Jubilee and the Punk movement in England. During the course of our meeting, he asked me if I knew the Sex Pistols, and if so, whether I could get an interview with them for his magazine ‘Interview’.
Arriving back in England a few weeks later, I contacted Malcolm McClaren asking if it would be possible to interview the Band. He said it was fine, but I had better get a move on as they were off on tour to America in a few days and were about to play their last gig in the UK at Ivanhoe’s in Huddersfield. They were playing a matinee and evening show as part of a benefit for families of striking firemen, the gig was to take place on Christmas Day 1977. At this time the location of any gigs the Pistols played were kept secret until the very last minute, in order to avoid trouble and cancellation.
I drove up to Huddersfield on Christmas morning and witnessed an electrifying concert. I spent a lot of time backstage where several of these pictures were taken. The band were incorrigible, Nancy Spungen stood behind me trying to set light to my hair – it was Johnny Rotten who finally stopped her. Sid Vicious was completely out of it, along with the other members of the band, excluding Rotten. The band poured beer in my tape recorder, which virtually stopped it from working and referred to Andy Warhol the whole way through as ‘Andy Arsehole’. Remarkably, I did manage to complete the interview but, unsurprisingly perhaps, Warhol decided not to use it. I sold it to Heathcote Williams for his magazine ‘It’.
Huddersfield was the last concert that the Sex Pistols played in England. In February 1978 Rotten left the band and within a year both Nancy Spungen and Sid Vicious were dead.
In 2008 the remaining Sex Pistols reformed and played a concert at the Brixton Academy.
Photographs taken by Jenny at the Concert were shown at the Rock Shutter Exhibition – ‘Best 500 Rock and Roll Photographs’ in Las Vegas, USA and prints of these are now highly collectable.

Love Is An Unfamiliar Name (pt. 2)

Snacks
Wordcount: 1,9 k
Warnings: none
A/N: hope you enjoy as much as i enjoyed writing it :)
PART ONE
—————
Few months had passed since THAT NIGHT, you had finished two short movie scores. Like many composers, you occasionally played with a band, starting out as a sound engineer intern during your music bachelor's degree. It was during this time that you met the group who would later invite you to become their bass player for live shows. Almost fifteen years down the line, there you were, laying down bass lines for their next album.
As the session ended, you reached for your water bottle when your bandmate, Tim, called out to you. "Hey there, kiddo. I know you're taking some time off soon. Can I count on you for the upcoming tour? I'm planning just a few shows so I can spend more time with the kids," he mentioned while packing his gear.
"Timmy, you know I'll be there! By June, I should have everything wrapped up so we can start post-production," you assured him. Tim happened to be Amy's husband, whom you introduced, and they had been together for nearly a decade.
"When are you leaving?" he inquired.
"Next Monday, I'm off to Alberta, then back to LA for a few days, off to Paris, then back to Canada, and on and on," you explained.
"The way you put it, it sounds like just a month or two," Johnny chimed in.
"Come on! I don't know why you're talking like that. Most of your work will be in post-production," you retorted, playfully pushing him. Johnny, a master in sound effects, was also part of your team, along with Tim, who excelled in translating emotions into music. Tim, however, would be less involved this time due to his newborn daughter. While he would assist on set some days, you had planned most of his work for the final score during post-production.
"I'll admit, I'm just as nervous as you are," Johnny confessed. "Things are getting real now."
"It sure is, and you're both in this with me. If you mess up, I'll fire you with no mercy," you teased, laughing.

"Remember when we met this girl man, she was 20-something, sitting shy behind a board working on synthesizers? Years later, she's our boss in the cinematographic world." Tim beamed proudly, resembling an older brother.
"Well, you know I'm here because you never let me fall," you expressed gratefully, recalling how they had always supported you as if you were their little sister, even during your toughest times.
"Oh, I forgot how cute and loving you can be sometimes." Johnny embraced you, joined by Jim and Lucas, the drummer who had just entered the room, unaware of the conversation.
"What would I do without you guys?" You chuckled, feeling a sense of belonging, and these guys made it feel like home.

—-

On Sunday, you began packing your luggage, gathering everything you needed to feel comfortable in the hotel that would serve as your Canadian residence for the coming months.

Monday morning, you double-checked everything once again before meeting Jenny at the airport around 2:00 PM to catch your flight, realizing the scale of the project as the entire crew was set to travel on a private flight.
Spotting Jenny amidst a small group at the airport, you recognized familiar faces from the sound department. While conversing with your new colleagues and waiting to check in, you headed to the self-service area for snacks when a familiar voice caught your attention from behind.
"Just make sure not to take the Reese's, Mrs. Coordinator," the voice teased.
"I'm more of an M&M's kind of girl," you retorted playfully. "You can have it all; it’s not like I care... - Pedro," you replied, turning to face him.
"Wow, you can be quite rude sometimes. Has anyone ever told you that?" Pedro seemed taken aback.
"That's just my way of showing affection," you quipped, attempting to break the ice, the joke clear in your mind.
"Like a hedgehog, huh? Got it, Sonic," Pedro replied, retrieving his items. The mention of Sonic brought a smile to your face.
"Sonic?" you questioned.
"Yeah, the hedgehog, Mrs. Coordinator," he continued teasing.
"Please, stop calling me that," you insisted.
"Sonic?" Pedro teased again.
"You're incredibly annoying, has anyone ever told you that?" You fired back.
"A few times, but at least I don’t jump to conclusions about someone else's personality," Pedro responded, a hint of a smile appearing as he took a sip of water.
"What's the matter, dude?" Your feisty side emerged. "I already apologized for that, and now you're going to keep bringing this up every chance you get?" He was right; you can be very rude. "I mean... I'm not... I...
"Nothing's wrong." Pedro's smile faded. "I thought you'd be okay with a joke about a stupid situation, one that, let's be clear, you created. Yes, I brought it up as a joke for the first and last time… ‘cause it seems we have different senses of humor," he continued earnestly. You found yourself agreeing with him, but you were too proud to give up.
"Alright, maybe we do have different humors. And you were the one who called me rude in the first place." You knew this time you sounded like a neglected child.
"Did I lie?"
"No," you conceded, trying not to sound stubborn. "But since we're going to be working together, perhaps we should try to understand each other better. I was joking about the Reese's incident, you know." You sounded just like your therapist now. “…And”

"FINALLY, THERE YOU ARE! May and I have been wandering around like two old ladies looking for their cats," Jenny chimed in, appearing out of nowhere like an angel to save you from yourself.
"Hey Jennifer, how's it going?" Pedro greeted her with a hug that got you thinking. You don’t hug Jenny quite as often as you should. "We were just discussing how we're going to make things work."
"Sure, we were," you muttered, a hint of annoyance in your voice.
"Ah, I see you've already experienced this girl's unique sense of humor," Jenny remarked, trying to lighten the mood. Though her comment irritated you, you knew she meant well.
"Unfortunately, he has, Jen," you replied, attempting to sound nice.
"Jenny, have you ever heard the phrase 'all bark, no bite'? It seems like your friend here fits that bill," Pedro observed with a cynical smile, not in a malicious way but more like a curious mind pondering your next move. Was he provoking you? You got confused...
"I can bite, but only if you ask nicely," you retorted, catching him off guard. His cheeks flushed, Jenny chuckled, and she made her way to the self-service area.
"What happened, ‘Mr. I have an answer to everything’? Cat got your tongue?" You teased him, noting his silence as he processed your response. You started to feel a bit foolish.
"Talking to you is truly a rollercoaster," Pedro remarked, attempting to sound confident, though you noticed his hand twitching. "That's a compliment, Sonic. Before you decide to pounce on me," he added shyly and genuinely. What just happened? Why did you do this to someone who isn’t your usual type? Well, you might be a wooden heart, but certainly you’re not dead.
"See you around then?" He regained his confidence. "All bark, no bite."
You were on the verge of responding that you hoped not, but before you could, he approached you and gently patted your shoulder, his hand resting there for a moment. A surge of electricity shot through your body so swiftly that you felt like a supernova had just exploded within you. Startled, you stepped back, fear creeping in. What was happening?
"Hey?" He looked confused. "Are you okay?"
You nodded in affirmation, and he smiled, remarking, "Quick reflexes, huh?”
This time, you were caught off guard. Physical touch was something you weren’t used to. Your body language resembled that of a feral cat—life had shaped you into this defensive creature. Earth Calling.
"Haha," you attempted to maintain the cool facade you had two minutes ago, "Isn't speed one of Sonic's powers?"
"I guess it is.”
"Well, are we cool then?" you asked, a hint of confusion in your voice.
"Why wouldn't we be?" he responded.
"Pedro, we just..."
"It's okay," he reassured, moving closer as you instinctively stepped back, clutching your pack of peanut butter M&M's like a protective talisman. "Hey, it's really okay. You've said what you needed to say, and I've done the same. We're cool." Sensing your anxiety, he urged, "Trust me."
"Okay, I think we should head back.” You said. “Jenny and May are probably feigning indecision over their purchases to make sure we don’t kill ourselves," you suggested, opening your M&M's pack. He observed your delicate movements, ensuring the package remained intact.
"I’m sure of that... Just like how Jenny watches out for you, May prevents me from fucking things up," Pedro remarked with a laugh.
"Two grown adults with their babysitters," you joked, glancing over his shoulder at Jenny and May. You signaled for them to join you and Pedro, as he turned and did the same.
"Hey, Hi!" May approached you enthusiastically. "I couldn't believe it when Pedro said he'd be working with you! I don't want to sound like a fangirl, but I love your music work! The last score you created was fantastic, and your work with Mended Fragments... I can't wait to see you guys perform live again!"
"Oh, uh, thank you... May," you replied, extending your hand. "I'm truly grateful to hear that,” you said shyly. “I must admit, I still don’t how to act in these situations, but I genuinely appreciate it." Your skin flushed with warmth. “We will play some gigs next year, i can get you some cool spots if you want”
"Really???" She was trying to hide how starstruck she was.
"Wow, enjoy it, May.” Pedro said, “She wasn't this friendly to me when we first met, and I told her I was a fan of her work. The very same day she called me the 'Game of Thrones guy.'" In that final sentence, he glanced at you like a cat poised to knock a cup of water off a table. He was teasing you, and he wanted you to know that.
This time, you didn't take the bait. Instead, you quipped, "You were on a date, Pedro, and my morals weren't the best that night. I'd rather not risk it." You chuckled, while Jenny smirked by his side.
"Come on!" He said it, feigning disappointment. "I thought we were due for another discussion," he glanced at you, "boriiiing."
"Guys, let's go. We have a flight to catch," May interjected, sensing the tension. The four of you made your way to meet the rest of the crew. Taking a seat beside Jenny, you found yourself smiling, and Jenny looked surprised at you.
"It's been a while since I've seen this," she remarked, her expression bright.
"See what?"
"This very one smile," she said, flashing her teeth.
"I'm not—"
"I'm not smiling. I don't feel anything. I'm the ice queen," she cut in, teasingly imitating you. "Everyone, look at how mean and bad I am." She continued…
"I have no idea what you're talking about," you responded, laughing and looking at the surroundings to ensure no one was paying attention.
"If anything happens between you two, you owe me 1000 bucks."
"Make it 2000, because nothing's going to happen. Deal?"
"Deal. I'm thrilled at the thought of being $2000 richer without doing anything."
"Keep dreaming," you retorted, picking up a book to read and acknowledging silently that she kind of had a point.
Fool.

i wonder what music artists they would listen to!
i know DAMN well that Sorcha would listen to Lana del ray, Saorise would listen to chapell roan and i think that Rilla would listen to Laufey
Tumblr media
GOODNESS, this took a while. Both Baji and I are ardent music lovers and aficionados, so music is veryimportant to us and to this story and these characters. So I wanted to make sure I got everything in order before answering these asks!
Sorcha loves jazz and music that’s heavily influenced by soul and movement, so she loves hip-hop, pop soul, R&B, club music - stuff that’s sexy and feminine and full of confidence, like Janelle Monae, Rihanna, Beyoncé, HER, Doja Cat, Billie Eilish.
She’s absolutely a Lana Del Rey fan, also loves Amy Winehouse, Paloma Faith, Clairy Browne, April Smith and the Great Picture Show, Laura Mvula. For more old school stuff she goes for Irma Thomas, Nina Simone, Peggy Lee, Julie London.
Rilla loves fun energetic pop that she can dance to but also makes her feel free to - Kesha (the Rainbow album was DEEPLY important to her), Doja Cat, Dimie Cat, Sabrina Carpenter, Chapelle Roan, Olivia Rodrigo, Brittany Spears. She loves Laufey for a softer, romantic vibe, and even though she doesn’t listen to a ton of alternative she LOVES Molotov Jukebox.
Also, girl ADORES Dolly Parton. She’s dressed up as her for Halloween, loves her endlessly. She got into Kacey Musgraves too, but Dolly has her heart. She likes some of Taylor Swift’s stuff, but she’s definitely not a die hard Swiftie.
Lorcan unironically adores Kesha, very happy to jam with Rilla whenever their girlie’s music is on. In general he loves music that would be perfect for a barroom brawl - Dropkick Murphys, Flogging Molly, IDLES. Loves rock in general, especially Def Leppard and AC/DC, the Clash and the Black Keys. Likes Gaelic Storm and the Beatles for softer moods.
Brig listens to a lot of metal and punk and rock music - she and Lorcan would definitely jam to AC/DC and the Black Keys. Also loves blues music, definitely a fan of Johnny Cash. Also likes Gin Wigmore a lot.
Luella loves soft indie core songs and groups - the Wailin’ Jennys, the Oh Hellos, the Crane Wives, the Jane Austen Argument, the Hush Sound, Brandi Carlisle, Cat Power, Paris Paloma. She and Rilla both love Laufey. She listens to Florence + the Machine and P!nk when she wants to feel empowered.
Locke is also into soft indie, lots of underground bands no one has ever heard of but have very intense poetic lyrics - Hozier, the National, Cigarettes After Sex, Florence + the Machine, Nicole Dollanganger, the Oh Hellos. There’s a lot of overlap between him and Lu, actually! He also loves viola music, he plays it and it’s a very healing, therapeutic passion of his.
Regal…whoo boy, his taste in music covers such a wide and diverse spectrum. He loves operas and classic musicals, very much a devotee to classical music by artists like Debussy and Puccini and Bizet. One of his absolute favorite songs is “Danse Macabre”…
He’s a virtuoso with the piano and has described himself as his own favorite musician.
But he does like some more modern music, he’s just VERY snobby about what he wants to listen to. Marina and the Diamonds (“Bubblegum Bitch” is a favorite), Queen (he is very fond of Freddy), Voltaire, Fish in a Birdcage, the Real Tuesday Weld are some examples.
Bogdan is even more a snob than Regal, and stays away from most modern music. He’d much rather focus on composing his own music than polluting his ears with the dreck that passes for songs nowadays. Sorcha has her work cut out with him, but she’s more than up to the task…
Casimir, sadly, probably doesn’t listen to a lot of music because of his injury - it’s too much stimulation and he suffers from horrible headaches to begin with. Not all music does it, but too much stress and sounds would very likely trigger an episode. It’s incredibly tragic because music is such an important and treasured facet of his and Bogdan’s culture…

Modern RA Headcanons:
Yes a lot of these am just based off me and my family. Basically all of Halt's ones are entirely based of things I like. But I still feel like it fits him. So basically this is a more "getting to know me" more than a modern headcanon thing.
Halt:
Halt loves Disney and Musicals. Everyone was surprised to find that out. His favourite musical is Grease and one of his favourite Disney movies is Alice in Wonderland
Halt liked music from the 70s and 80s the most, especially classic rock. His favourite band is Queen. He also likes MCR (obviously). He doesn’t like mediaeval folk music because it reminds him of Hibernia which and it all sounds the same to him which is why in the books it says he doesn’t like music, but modern day stuff has a wider range and more interesting stuff he does actually like.
Halt loves Tim Burton and Johnny Depp movies. Some of his favourite movies are Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, Nightmare Before Christmas, Coraline, Corpse Bride, Sweeney Todd and the Tim Burton remakes of Alice in Wonderland and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Halt loves MARVEL movies, his favourite character is Tony. They are basically the same person
Halt can actually play guitar and some drums but he doesn’t really play for people
Crowley:
Crowley also loves Disney and musicals. His favourite Disney movie is Brave, his favourite musical is The Greatest Showman.
Crowley wears flannel shirts.
Crowley hates dolls and mannequins.
Crowley likes ABBA, Dua Lipa and Beyonce the most
Crowley’s favourite TV show is F.R.I.E.N.D.S and his favourite movie is The Greatest Showman.
Will:
Will’s favourite band is Nirvana
Will likes Star Wars, Jurassic Park, Back to the Future and Jaws
Literally everyone else:
Horace’s favourite band is Aerosmith
Alyss’s favourite bands are Blur and Oasis
Jenny’s favourite artists are P!nk, Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran and other artists like that
Surprisingly to a lot of people, Pauline’s favourite band is Foo Fighters
Sir Rodney’s favourite band is The Killers
Baron Arald’s least favourite band is Green Day but everyone else likes them so it’s hell for him

I HAVE THIS GREAT NEW IDEA FOR A CARTOON SHOW!
I have this great new idea for a cartoon show! It's called Cereal Town! It's about a town where cereal mascots live and do CRAAAAAAAAAAZY stuff! They say out of character things! The main joke is that these iconic characters are acting like deranged out of character lunatics! But it's a total love letter to cereal mascots, trust me, it totally is!
The show will be animated in Adobe Flash, and all the characters have been redesigned. Here's some concept art I whipped up!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
EVERYONE's gonna be there! Even the really obscure ones, 'cause this is a love letter to cereal mascots! Here's all the characters that'll show up:
Tony the Tiger (voiced by Paul F. Thompkins) - He's a million times dumber now! Your typical sitcom dimwitted dad, like Homer Simpson or Peter Griffin!
Mrs. Tony (voiced by some random YouTube/TikTok celebrity) - Tony's wife who's a total nag and considered way out of his league (not that you can tell with the art style)!
Tony Jr. and Antoinette (voiced by Ben Schwartz and Jenny Slate) - Tony's kids! They're basically Dipper and Mabel from Gravity Falls but they're tigers!
Trix the Rabbit (voiced by Johnny Galecki) - He's addicted to Trix! Get it? Trix = drugs! And drug addiction is HILARIOUS, right?!
Sonny the Cuckoo Bird (voiced by Will Forte) - Since we gave the "addicted to their cereal" shtick to Trix the Rabbit, he's now a neuronic Woody Allen parody who collects decorative plates!
Lucky the Leprechaun (voiced by Flula Borg) - He's not really a leprechaun now! He's just a weirdo who THINKS he's a leprechaun! He's not even Irish anymore, he's German!
Toucan Sam (voiced by Jillian Bell) - He's a girl now, because otherwise there won't be enough female characters in the show! And she's also a stereotypical valley girl obsessed with her hair and clothes and self-conscious about her big nose!
Count Chocula (voiced by Fred Armisen) - He's now a stereotypical scatterbrained geezer who complains about those dang kids and their newly-fangled contraptions or whatever!
Frankenberry (voiced by Thomas Lennon) - He's a loser who lives in his creator's basement and goes on the internet a lot! He's also obsessed with science fiction movies!
Boo Berry (voiced by Mindy Kaling) - He's a girl now, too! She's Sonny's girlfriend (or rather, GHOULfriend, aren't I so clever?) who is really smart until she suddenly isn't because the joke demands for her to not be smart!
Dig 'Em the Frog (voiced by another random YouTube/TikTok celebrity) - He's a musician! He was once part of a band, but decided to go solo! And he's obsessed with pumpkin spice lattes and drinks them even when it's not autumn!
Sugar Bear (voiced by Bobby Moynihan) - He's Dig 'Em's husband!
Snap, Crackle and Pop (voiced by Jason Mantzoukas, Kimiko Glenn, and Daveed Diggs) - They're classmates of Tony Jr. and Antoinette who are always up to some zany scheme to get out of class!
Chip the Wolf (voiced by Beck Bennett) - He's the teacher at Tony Jr. and Antoinette's school, but he's also secretly a secret agent! Because shut up, that's why!
Cap'n Crunch (voiced by David Tennant) - He's the Mayor of Cereal Town, but he's incompetent! LOL!
Wendell the Baker from Cinnamon Toast Crunch (voiced by Harvey Guillen) - He's a baker! So... basically, he's exactly the same, except he's voiced by Harvey Guillen now!
Fruity Yummy Mummy (voiced by Lizzo) - She's Frankenberry's ex-girlfriend! She's ALSO considered way out of his league!
Fruit Brute (voiced by Don Cheadle) - He's Count Chocula's pet dog! Personality-wise, he's basically Brian Griffin!
Sunny the Raisin Bran Sun (voiced by Stephanie Beatriz) - He's a girl now too! She's the sun, but she's also a citizen of Cereal Town! How WACKY!
Buzz Bee only has dialogue in one episode, where it's revealed that he's voiced by Dennis Haybert! That's funny, right?! RIGHT?!
Did I mention that this is a love letter to cereal mascots?! Because it IS!

This is not an attempt at confessing my life's traumas, as much as examining the cultural themes relating to my experiences.
Reexamining music about violence from the perspective of a survivor.
It is also an attempt at expressing uniquely feminine pain and anguish that has long been ignored by genres that examine male pain, such as metal, industrial, and most all of the *cores that emerged from them, but including blues, country music, and English language folk music. Experiences unique to humans having children, but also those of violation, lack of physical dominance, disenfranchisement, erasure, demonization, stolen agency, navigating narrow social constraints, etc. These experiences are not unique to women universally, but in our culture here in the USA they are had most often by women and other oppressed groups.
I've been fascinated with murder ballads since I was a kid listening to 60s folk revival and country western music with my parents. Fascinated in a kind of thrilled and afraid way.
How many times did I hear the words of Delia's Gone before I realized it held a passive threat?
I wanted to know what kind of power these songs had. I did what I do best, I dug into as many old sources as I could find to understand where these songs came from. I learned about broadside ballads and Child ballads and the Roud folk song index. So there is history, just not mine.
I learned that Delia was a real murder victim.
There was also an Ellen Smith and an Omie Wise. There are two different Frankie and Johnnys. The unnamed shes, hers, hims, and theirs. And of course the victims and killers who lost their names to lyrical meter and are now known only as Molly, Polly, Jenny, Maggie, Margaret, Willy, William, Tom, or Johnny.
Because that's the thing about these songs, a lot of them started as news- a kind of news based entertainment that would of course be hard for any modern person to understand. People who heard them wrote their own versions with different words, different melodies, different rhythms.
My life is a lot, with no break in the storm in sight, but digging through these fragments of pain help me keep things in perspective. I'm lucky enough to have access to meds and a therapist that I really get along well with, but I don't feel comfortable with the kind of raw expression I'm working towards with this project.
Right now I am focused on what I see as the beginning phase: Warming up and refining my musical ideas by performing traditional songs, covering modern songs in a "traditional" style, and rewriting traditional songs to examine them with a better understanding of history.
Some big inspirations for this stage of the project:
youtube
youtube
It's been almost a decade since I've been in a band, and I've never worked solo before, so it's slow going to say the least. But I am also enjoying working on this musical project more than any I have done in the past. No matter how many times I move on to work on something else I always come back to this music.
I'll be using this space to gather research materials, workshop song ideas, fuck around posting aesthetic stuff, ramble pointlessly, and share drafts of my songs.
If you are interested in following this project's development, follow my tumblr and whatever social media accounts you prefer.
It may be awhile, but you'll hear from me. 💜

🎸 AC/DC, Alice Cooper, Eric Clapton, The Grateful Dead, Bruce Springsteen, & The Supremes! 🥁
Thank you, Nonnie! These are so fun!
AC/DC - What are your favorite bands?
Oh my gosh, this one is too hard! I genuinely don't know that I could pick favorites, but the ones that immediately spring to mind are the White Stripes, Garbage, Frightened Rabbit, The Velvet Underground, The Stooges, Sleater-Kinney, Franz Ferdinand, The Strokes, Kings of Leon, Blitzen Trapper, The Kills, Silverchair, Nirvana, Razorlight, Fleet Foxes, The Avett Brothers, Rilo Kiley, and like... The Moldy Peaches. Back in the day, I also really enjoyed Arcade Fire before their lead singer proved to be a garbage fucking person.
Alice Cooper - What is your favorite type of music?
Like... women? Generally? I am a huge fan of female singer-songwriters who do weird shit with their voices. PJ Harvey, Regina Spektor, Nicole Atkins, Fiona Apple, Laura Marling, Jenny Lewis, Ida Maria, St. Vincent and so on and so forth. After that, it's sort of... general alternative, Americana, alt-pop, and rock? I have a soft spot for old school country--Loretta, Patsy, Johnny and the like--and like, two nu-country artists, including Miranda Lambert. Sorry to Eddie Munson, but metal ain't really my scene, though I do enjoy Opeth when I want to get my angry on.
Eric Clapton - Have you ever been in love with a rock artist?
No, but I lost my virginity to one. And that's all she wrote, folks!
The Grateful Dead - What song are you listening right now?
The Succession theme song. But the last thing I listened to was Take the Night Off by Laura Marling because it's one of my to get my soul known again inspo songs and I needed a ~vibe for editing.
Bruce Springsteen - A song that you would sing in a karaoke?
I am a karaoke fiend, but I was also in show choir and can halfway carry a tune, soooo... yeah. Basically, if I'm singing on my own I do Jolene, and if I'm singing in a group I'll do whatever but I'm a fan of The Sweater Song by Weezer because you can really make an ass of yourself in a lot of fun ways.
The Supremes - Your favorite girlband?
Going back to an earlier answer, but I've got to go with Sleater-Kinney. Carrie Brownstein was a formative fucking experience.
Ask me about music!

Ladies and Gentleman, the Fabulous Stains: teenage Diane Lane and Laura Dern rock punk
This long-buried gem from 1982 about a teen-girl punk band subverts the great rock’n’roll swindle of the Sex Pistols
Jenny Valentish Mon 18 Jan 2021 11.30 EST
When Johnny Rotten crouched on the edge of the stage in San Francisco in 1978, at the demise of the Sex Pistols’ US tour, and asked, “Ever get the feeling you’ve been cheated?” it would inspire a key moment in a film four years later.
In Ladies and Gentleman, the Fabulous Stains, Billy (Ray Winstone) fronts the Looters – a London punk band, all “poxy” this and “bollocks” that – rounded out by real-life Sex Pistols Paul Cook and Steve Jones, as well as Paul Simonon from the Clash. Billy addresses the fanatical teenage girl audience awaiting the set of headline act the Fabulous Stains, and snarls: “You’ve been ripped off.”
Rotten’s comment had been in reference to manager Malcolm McLaren booking the disastrous tour in cities unlikely to embrace the Pistols, whereas Billy’s broadside is motivated by resentment that his booking agent has turned what had been the Looters’ support band, the Fabulous Stains, into a cynical marketing concept.
(Stains trailer here: https://youtu.be/06kCwPpyjCk)
“You’re adverts. You’re a commercial,” he spits at the audience of “skunks”, named after the two-tone hair of the Fabulous Stains. This sea of teenage girls is dressed in the official Stains merch of transparent red blouses, completed by red winged eye makeup, and underwear and fishnets with no skirts.
It’s not the only parallel to the Pistols in this long-lost cult film, now available to rent or buy on YouTube. Jones and Cook, who wrote many songs on the soundtrack, formed the Professionals after the Pistols broke up. One of that band’s singles, Join the Professionals, winds up being the Fabulous Stains’ break-out MTV hit.
Tumblr media
Trailer for Ladies and Gentlemen, the Fabulous Stains.
The Fabulous Stains themselves, made up of nihilistic firecracker Corinne Burns (a 15-year-old Diane Lane); Jessica McNeil (13-year-old Laura Dern) and Tracy Burns (Marianne Kanter) are pitched somewhere between the Go-Gos and the Runaways, and frontwoman Corinne is frequently invited on to TV shows, thanks to her bleak one-liners that are guaranteed to shock suburbia. One moralistic TV news anchor is clearly modelled on Bill Grundy, whose 1976 interview with the Pistols descended into mayhem when he contemptuously goaded them into swearing.
The plot follows a tour of the US, initially headlined by rock dinosaurs the Metal Corpses (a washed-up version of KISS), followed on the bill by the Looters and the Fabulous Stains.
Tumblr media
The Fabulous Stains are just as disparaging of Metal Corpses (“He was an old man in a young girl’s world,” they tell reporters when the guitarist overdoses backstage), but also of the Looters, who are themselves has-beens by 1982. They’re repulsed by the way their tourmates assume all women are groupies, giving rise to the slogan, “We’re the Stains and we don’t put out”. Their star soon eclipses that of the other bands, and Corinne becomes some kind of monster herself.
Tumblr media
In fact, one wonders what the famously prickly Dowd made of the end result of Ladies and Gentleman, the Fabulous Stains. She and director/record executive Lou Adler apparently couldn’t agree on the ending, and she walked off set after being groped by a crew member. Her feminist script rubbed up awkwardly against the lingering shots of pubescent breasts bouncing behind transparent blouses.
Paramount buried the film, perhaps because of a poorly received test screening, and it languished in the vaults for decades, only being screened at the odd film festival. Those fleeting outings were enough to fire the imaginations of Courtney Love and riot grrrl bands such as Bikini Kill, but the film didn’t reach a wider audience until it was released on DVD in 2008 with a cast commentary.
There are some great visual moments, such as the audience of teenage Stains clones flipping off the Looters en masse, and the dilapidated tour bus rumbling through shit towns (driven by real-life reggae artist Barry Ford as the tour manager) painted red, gold and green, with “The Looters” spray-painted over “The Metal Corpses”. And the smart-mouthed script isn’t as contrived as you might anticipate, despite having to jump a number of sharks in order to catapult the Stains to MTV stardom.
The ultimate burn comes from Corinne Burns, of course.
“You are so jealous of me,” she tells Billy, who’s kicked down her dressing room door to tell her she knows nothing about the industry. “I’m everything you ever wanted to be.”
“A cunt,” he spits.
“Exactly.”
Ladies and Gentlemen, the Fabulous Stains is available to stream on YouTube

We started the year 2022 with a bump!
January promised to be promising, but not everyone was lucky enough to start the new year peacefully. Among those on the candlestick were: Lee Taemin and his unexpected transfer from the army to public service. Still the situation of what exactly happened remains unexplained. Hwiyoung and Chani of SF9 were detained for violating regulations on being in quarantine by which the police were summoned. At the very end of the month we also got an update on former BigBang star Seungri, who pleaded guilty and thus reduced his sentence to one year and six months in prison.
February was not any quieter as, once again, we were informed of a surprising but very pleasant piece of news. Namely, Hyuna and Dawn got engaged. Of the less pleasant ones, T.O.P of BigBang left the YG label.
Wondae ended up leaving the DKZ in March after an extended hiatus due to a serious shoulder injury. His doctor was said to have recommended constant rehabilitation in the future, leading to his withdrawal from the group.
April for Exo fans brought sad news, namely, on EXO's 10th anniversary, Lay published a handwritten letter in English and Korean announcing his departure from SM Entertainment. Likewise, HYBE has no luck with its new team Le Sserafim, as Kim Ga-ram was accused of being a bully at school in April. In addition, the team itself this month was accused not only of appropriate and highly controversial choreography or clothing for the girls, but also of copying from other teams. Also unexpectedly, 2NE1 gave a surprise performance at Coachella.
In May, V, Lisa and Park Bogum closed Paris Fashion Week and AleXa won the American Song Contest. Meanwhile, TWICE became the first girl k-pop band to perform at a stadium in the US.
Jerome, Minsu and Woonggi was another of the trio of TO1 to depart the group in June.
July for the Le Sserafim band ended with the loss of one of its members. K-pop singer Kim Ga-ram after she was accused of bullying schoolmates. In July, girl group SM Aespa gave a speech at a high-level UN political forum.
In August, news of a rigged vote in QUEENDOM 2 hit the public. Many fans could not believe that Mnet was honest in its decision-making when announcing the results. Also in August, Girls' Generation returned after 5 years in a full band especially for their anniversary.
September for fans of both BTS and Blackpink was very emotional. On September 16, the music video for the title track "Shut Down" was released, but that's not the only reason the band hit the headlines recently. Around the same time, dating rumors surrounding Jennie and V from BTS surfaced again after more photos allegedly of them on a date in Jeju were leaked. On the other hand, Jeno with NCT Dream when he debuted on the runway of New York Fashion Week.
On October 14, an anonymous person claiming to be Ravn's ex-girlfriend posted claims against him on Twitter. In response, ONEUS' agency, RBW, announced that it was checking the veracity of the accusations and that Ravn would cease operations until further notice. On October 27, RBW released a new statement confirming Ravn's departure from the group.
On November 30, HyunA announces its parting of ways with DAWN. And on November 25, BlockBerryCreative announced Chuu's removal from LOONA.  Meanwhile, Jungkook was scheduled to sing with Qatari singer Fahad Al-Kubaisi at the World Cup opening ceremony on November 20.
We end December with the breakup of band bugAboo. And iKON has left YG and the group members will now promote under other labels. And NCTzen are experiencing a nightmare after four NCT members, Taeil, Johnny, Jaehyun and Jungwoo, suffered injuries while recording a commercial.
