pssst can i please ask you to spoiler the raven baby reveal to me...?
So the summary of X-Men Blue: Origins (2023) Mystique is wandering around New York acting crazy and mumbling about her lost baby, Kurt catches up with her and tries to talk her into calming down.
Tumblr media
Kurt gives Raven his sword which breaks the mental barriers and it's revealed that while Raven was married to Baron Wagner, she and Irene were an on again, off again, couple who would hook up with other people whenever it helped their goals.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Raven had hired Irene to be the housemaid so she could stay close while Raven was married to Wagner, using his money/influence as they wanted and having a torrid love affair with Irene in private. Azazel shows up and Irene encouraged Raven to have an affair with him as well, because she had visions of the future.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Basically Irene wanted a love child with Raven, but needed Azazel to believe he was the father because she knew that unless Kurt was set on a path to be his constant foe/destroyer of his plans then Azazel would rise to power.
Tumblr media
Irene's visions aren't something she can stop and she lives her life according to how to bring about her visions but she doesn't tell Raven any of this until 5 years after Kurt's birth. So she and Raven have a child, Kurt, and from my understanding of the reading, Mystique can copy the genes down to a molecular level and took the gene patterns from Azazel and Baron Wagner and impregnated Irene. So Kurt doesn't have 2 parents, he has 4, well 5 including Margali Szardos who was his adopted mom. Kurt is now battling for the #1 spot for "most parents and most confusing parental origin in comics" and he's up against the Maximoff twins who have gone through 3 sets of parents.
Tumblr media
Back to the story, Raven dumps Azazel who is such a pathetic loser, I love that lol. Raven fakes being pregnant by shapeshifting to look like she is pregnant as the months go by. Baron Wagner discovers his wife's affairs, and being the homophobe he is, is stabbed by Raven who then spends the next few months switching between forms to make people believe that the Baron and his wife are both still around, waiting until Irene gives birth. I'm guessing because Raven intended to use the Baron's money/pretending to be him so she and Irene could live in comfort or until they wanted to move on.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Irene is the one who gives birth to Kurt, and Raven overcome with joy/love for Kurt doesn't want his first sight of her to be human so she reveals herself.
Tumblr media
The townspeople are of course in an uproar, want to kill the demon woman and her demon child, Irene tells Raven to get to safety and that she would be ok, but Raven fears for Irene so she leaves Kurt under a tree and rushes back to kill the people who would hurt her wife and discovers Irene is missing, she runs back to find Kurt and he's gone too.
Tumblr media
Five years pass and she finds Irene again, this time watching a young Rogue, Irene reveals everything to Raven, the Azazel vision, Irene needed Kurt to be raised as an outcast etc. Raven and Irene both know they are in a toxic relationship, but they love each other too much so they went to the one man who can make everything worse, Charles Xavier. Of course Xavier does what he does best, erases people's memories and implants new ones.
Tumblr media
So now Kurt has 2 deadbeat mutant moms, 1 deadbeat demonic mutant father, 1 dead human father, and 1 adopted mother and they all give him the most drama & trauma that you will ever see in comics! Love wins (?)
I am currently taking donations to hire Kurt a therapist (who isn't Professor X), save an elf's sanity and donate /jk
I will say that this origin, though very messy, does at least confirm that Irene is just as messy/toxic as Raven, so I hope they continue to be totally bad for each other and 100% in love, which is very refreshing to see in wlw couples and I really hope they do not try to soften their edges, especially Raven's, I do not want a "good mother Raven", but time will tell. Also finally Kurt is Baron Wagner's son technically due to partially copied genetics so it finally makes sense for why Kurt has the Wagner last name, which is something that always bugged me, because imo if he had zero connection to the Baron then he wouldn't have the Wagner last name. Also this doesn't invalidate the Azazel retcon from before because again technically Azazel believes Kurt is his son, and Kurt does have partially copied genetics from Azazel.
I think it was a really tough balancing act to have to write, I wish it could have been written a bit better or the thoughts of Rogue actually being Irene/Raven's daughter would have worked better. Like imagine if Raven and Irene were both pregnant, Irene had Rogue and Raven had Nightcrawler or Irene had them both as twins, then they wouldn't just be foster/adopted siblings but also bio siblings, and it could have opened up the door for more stories involving them as brother and sister trying to deal with their mothers. Marvel constantly ignores the potential for Rogue and Kurt's sibling dynamic and I wish we got more of it in the comics. I get that the writer was trying to keep to the old canon while creating the new canon and using the original plan for Kurt's parentage, so while I feel it's way too complicated this is also comics where complicated plots and retcons have been a long standing tradition meant to torment us readers.

What 'War and Peace' is to the novel and 'Hamlet' is to the theatre, Swan Lake' is to ballet - that is, the name which to many people stands for and sums up an art form.
Robert Gottlieb
It’s hard to believe that Swan Lake’s original premiere was seen as disastrous. When it first performed on 4 March 1877, at Moscow’s Bolshoi Theatre.
Tchaikovsky’s magical ballet tells the story of the doomed love of Prince Siegfried and Princess Odette. Prince Siegfried goes out hunting one night and chases a group of swans – one of them transforms into a young woman, Odette, who explains that she and her companions were turned into swans by the evil Baron Von Rothbart. The spell can only be broken if someone who has never loved before swears an oath of undying love and promises to marry her. The Prince declares his love to Odette and promises to be loyal forever.
At a grand reception at the palace, the Prince must choose a bride – but he can think only of Odette. Suddenly a fanfare announces the arrival of two guests - it is Odette! The prince dances with her and asks for her hand in marriage. But it’s not Odette - the mystery woman is the daughter of the evil von Rothbart, Odile. Odette has witnessed the whole scene. Too late, Siegfried realises his mistake.
Siegfried follows Odette to the lake and begs her forgiveness. She says she forgives him but nothing can change the fact he broke his vow. They decide to die together. The lovers throw themselves into the lake.
Tumblr media
There are a few different theories as to how Tchaikovsky came up with the idea for Swan Lake. Though the libretto is based on a story by the German author Johann Karl August Musäus The Stolen Veil, many of Tchaikovsky’s contemporaries claimed that he was deeply fascinated by the tragic life story of Bavarian King Ludwig II - sometimes called the Swan King - who died under mysterious circumstances by drowning himself in a lake.
It is likely that Tchaikovsky chose Ludwig II as the prototype of Prince Siegfried. It is easy to tell that the composer clearly enjoyed working on the music for Swan Lake, as he wrote far more material than would ever be required. As a result, the version most commonly performed today is, in fact, an edited one, created after Tchaikovsky’s death and significantly shorter than the original work.
Tumblr media
Considering that Swan Lake is currently the most frequently performed ballet in the world, it's hard to imagine that it was a failure upon its premiere, with near unanimous criticism of different production aspects. Critics were universally disparaging, claiming the production was indistinctive and forgettable. They disliked the set and the choreography, thought the orchestra and dancers were subpar, and thought Tchaikovsky’s score was too complicated. The dancers who performed in the ballet’s premiere also declared Tchaikovsky’s music was too rich to accompany their balletic moves, and simply too difficult to dance to.
Because of these distractions, the actual brilliant score by Tchaikovsky got largely overlooked amidst the chaos.  Although a few critics did recognise the virtues of the masterful score, it was considered far too complex for ballet, too “noisy” and too “symphonic”, resembling the grand, weighty music of Richard Wagner. Even the initial ballet dancers deemed the music too difficult to dance to as its density clashed with the fluid and graceful balletic movements.
Tumblr media
One of the issues for the premiere performance was the absence of the Bolshoi’s prima ballerina, Anna Sobeshchanskaya. Sobeshchanskaya rejoined the production as Odette/Odile in April 1877 but insisted on making certain changes to the choreography and score. Two years later the original choreographer, Julius Reisinger, left Moscow and was replaced by Belgian choreographer Joseph Pater Hansen. Hansen set about re-staging Swan Lake, launching his new version in January 1880.  All 33 performances of the ballet between 1877-1883 sold out, attesting to the ballet’s increasing popularity amongst audiences.
A planned revival of the ballet in the early 1890s was cast into doubt by the death of Tchaikovsky in November 1893, who didn’t live to see the ultimate success of his ballet. Tchaikovsky had written far more material than was ever required, and after his death, Riccardo Drigo took on the job of revising Tchaikovsky’s score, with the approval of his brother Modest Tchaikovsky.
Tumblr media
The revised and edited version – commonly the version of the score used today - is considerably shorter than the original, full-length work. It premiered on 15 January 1895 by the Maryinsky Ballet at the Maryinsky Theatre to overwhelmingly positive reviews.
Call it what you like - Dance of the Four Swans, Dance of the Cygnets, The Four Little Swans - but for me the pas de quatre from Swan Lake is one of the most iconic dances in one of the most iconic classical ballets of all time. It is a coveted role for a ballerina, one that requires technical precision and teamwork. The light-hearted Dance of the Cygnets involves 16 pas de chat performed by four dancers moving sideways in exact unison with their arms interlaced.
Tumblr media
I’ve always found its spirit of sheer innocence and beauty breath-taking to watch. I’m left with wonder restored and a distinct feeling of the flight of innocence coming back to rest in my hardened heart.

Star Trek reminded me why I prefer Nightcrawler's original backstory. In Star Trek, Spock is half-human but follows logic whereas his half-brother Sybok is full-Vulcan and follows emotions. Kurt's half-brother Graydon Creed is the son of Sabretooth and Mystique but is a human supremacist whereas Kurt was originally fathered by a regular human, Baron Wagner, but is a mutant who comes to embrace his mutanthood. I think by retconning Kurt into being fathered by the demonic-looking mutant, Azazel, it really takes away from the narrative parallelism Kurt shares with his half-brother.

Sweet Revenge
Pairing: Baron "Happy" Corbin x Fem Reader
Summary: Being on the Smackdown commentary team, the reader isn't a fan of Pat McAfee because of how can be annoying, especially his flirting toward her. When Pat is out for the week, she's excited about Corbin, her friend with benefits, who certainly flirts with her while joining commentary and mocking Pat, making the reader want 'revenge' when the show ends...

Tonight at work was so peaceful, being on commentary was fun and I was good at it, and with Pat being away for the week?
So peaceful, not so loud, and no annoyances. Just the way I liked it. Things were going to be interesting too with Corbin joining commentary.
Corbin was there solely because he took out Pat the week prior, but that was none of my business.
At first, he was quiet, as were Michael and I, listening to what Ludwig and Gunther had to say, but his mocking of Pat began when Shinsuke Nakamura’s music hit.
He shot up out of his chair, jumping and freaking out like a fan and it was hilarious.
“What are you doing you fool?!” Michael yelled as he jumped up onto the desk, copying Nakamura’s pose, getting on his feet, and playing an air guitar.
“Leave him alone, Michael! He’s got moves!” I laughed, squealing when he grabbed my hand, pulling me up to the table:
“Come on, Y/N! Have some fun!”
Michael was very curious as to why I was so friendly with him. I didn’t associate with talent too much, but Corbin? No one knew that I talked to him.
I jumped up right alongside him, dancing along and rocking out:
“This is actually so much fun!” I giggled, doing an air guitar too, laughing at Corbin on his knees, being so dramatic with it, but I played right along and enjoyed the bit of goofiness.
Corbin did not stop singing the beat of his song till it cut, but I needed to sit, actually out of breath, but still smiling:
“That was so much fun.”
My smile grew when Corbin hopped back down, having me snort at him throwing Michael out of his chair and taking the spot next to me.
“What the?! Corbin!”
Michael was so annoyed, but I was blushing when Corbin sat next to me, shutting Michael down:
“You’re so lame! I’m sitting next to Y/N. She’s actually a good commentator and knows how to have fun, Michael!”
“Why thank you, Corbin,” I smiled, fixing my skirt and joining in on the digs at Michael, “It’s nice to be sitting next to a man with taste for once.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?!” Michael looked at me, upset but I shrugged:
“Just being honest.”
The main reason I didn’t like Pat was because of not only how annoying he could be, but his little flirting. I knew Corbin was only out here to mock Pat, but we had a relationship outside of the wrestling world and he was really flirting with me:
“Think it’s the first time you’ve actually sat next to a man and I sure have good taste.”
Licking his lower lip, he put his arm on the back of my chair, a sexy smirk forming while staring into my eyes.
I had to look away with my smile growing, letting his arm rest there, all of us silenced when Nakamura took his microphone, challenging Ludwig to a match.
For the majority of the match, we were taking our jobs seriously, but Corbin kept me laughing, yelling at Michael after he kept bringing up his attack on Pat:
“I ran people over in football, just like I ran your boy, Pat McAfee, over.”
“So, what is going to happen at Summerslam?” I was curious about his game plan and he kept messing with Michael but also saying:
“Oh, Summerslam is going to be beautiful, just like you, and Cole’s gonna have to watch his best friend, who just rejuvenated his love for the WWE! We saw your tweet, you should be embarrassed! You’re gonna have to watch me punish him”
“Well, at least I have friends,” Cole actually hit him with a good one, but then I stepped in:
“Hey, don’t be telling lies now, Cole. Corbin has friends!”
“Thank you, Y/N,” He smiled at me, holding my hand on my thigh, “I have an amazing friend, sitting right next to me actually and I’m not talking about you, Cole. You idiot.”
Man, I haven’t had this much fun on commentary for a while, Cole shooting back:
“Bottom line is, for you, this is about jealousy.”
“Jealous about what?!” He laughed, “I’m doing just fine, living a great life, got an amazing friend here with me, unlike you, Cole! And she’s so sweet and gorgeous? Pat is jealous of me!”
“Definitely jealous,” I snickered with him, not meaning to get lost but with his hand starting to rub my thigh under the desk, the soft squeezes of his huge hand deep in my thigh, I was thinking with a different mindset, “Like look at how successful Corbin is, an amazingly built wrestler, handsome. Pat could never.”
Michael's eyes about popped out of his head, “Excuse me, Y/N?!”
“You heard what she said,” Corbin smiled in his face, leaning to me, hand going even deeper in my thigh, finger toying at my panties, “You think he’s jealous too?”
“So jealous,” I smiled back, leaning against his shoulder, squeezing my thighs together, and trying to fight the pleasurable hums.
“Get a room,” Michael mumbled under his breath, Corbin having me blurting out with laughter when he plucked his glasses off of him.
Right as I stopped, Nakamura hit his finisher on Ludwig, so we finished out the match and then really grew quiet while watching Gunther punish Ludwig for losing.
It was hard to watch, but once they began to exit the ring, Corbin took the time to properly make his exit as well:
“Thank you so much for having me, Y/N. I had a great time, just might come down a little more often.”
“You can take both of their places if you want,” I played, making Michael more upset:
“Wow Y/N. After all the time we worked together.”
“Oh, I know, poor thing. I feel bad for you,” Corbin jabbed, taking my hand to kiss it and thanking me again, “It was a pleasure.”
“Certainly,” I blushed when he kissed my hand, that intensifying when he blew a kiss to me, mouthing:
“Text me.”
Taking my phone, I waited for him to make his exit and luckily we went into a commercial break, texting quickly:
[Im getting revenge later]
[Revenge? 😂 I was just having some fun 😈]
[Yeah while I was working 🙄😂]
[I was too!] [Come find me and get your ‘revenge’ when you’re done then]
[Bet😘]
I left it there because if I kept on texting him, I would get so distracted and there was still a good bit of time before the show ended.
Better believe that when it was over? The goal the second I got backstage was finding Corbin.
He always had a private locker room to hang out in, only thing was, I wasn’t sure where it was. So, I just followed the signs, really focused so when I felt someone take my arm and pull me, I squealed so loud.
“Geez babe, it’s just me!” Baron laughed, hugging me from behind and laughing at my reaction, needing to breathe, but also rolling my eyes:
"You just can't be scaring people like that!"
"Aww, I'm sorry," He pouted and lied, just to kiss my neck and squeeze me, "You're just walking around here looking so damn fine, couldn't help myself."
"Don't suck up to me," I warned, letting him kiss my neck and smiling, "I'm still gonna get my revenge."
"Let me guess," He kissed up to my ear, hand slipping under my skirt again, teasing me, "It was really hard not to moan while I was doing that?"
"Wasn't fair and you know it," I hummed, grinding back onto him a little when he slipped a finger under my panties, running through my folds and then making its way in:
"You enjoyed it though, just like you are now," He chuckled, curling his finger to hit that little bump that would make me shake, "Still soaked from it."
"Baron," I opened my eyes, so lost I forgot, laughing, "We're in the hall."
"Shit," He laughed, wiggling his finger once more, then fixing the both of us, "Wanna head out? I brought the Ferrari."
Curse that sly smile of his, holding up and jiggling his keys, giving me a great opportunity to take my revenge, snatching his fedora so it blinded him for a moment, then stealing the keys and running:
"Thanks for the new car!"
"That's fucked up!" He yelled, having me run full speed and laughing, going out to the parking lot, pushing the button for the horn so I could find his Ferrari.
He caught up with me quickly, my upper body halfway in the car as I was laughing more, trying to get in, but while leaning over, he spanked my ass good, pulling me out of the car by my hips:
"Nice try, Y/N!"
When I stood up straight, there was no emotion on my face and it quickly worried him, but I did it on purpose. Teasing me tonight, what he just did in the hall then spanking my ass like that? My blood was running quick and hot.
"Hey, I thought we were just playing-" He truly thought I was upset, till I yanked him by the shirt, kissing him hard, shoving my tongue in, and growling:
"Get your ass in the front seat."
"Who you talking to like that?" He tried to play around, and I was still in a playful mood, but still had an attitude:
"You want some ass or not?"
"I'm getting that ass," He laughed, tapping me and switching places to hop in, watching as I looked all around, making sure no one was there to see me step out of my panties, throwing them into the passenger side before climbing in on top of him, shutting the door and immediately kissing him again.
"Good thing I blacked out these windows," He locked the doors, tossing his hat off my head, whispering while playing with my skirt, "I've been thinking about fucking you in this skirt all night."
"You're gonna get what you want," A sly look crept onto my face, biting his lip while helping unbutton his pants, "Just with a twist."
"Really set on trying to keep me down, huh?" He quickly fixed himself, leaning the seat back, and I purred softly into his ear:
"Oh, I will. I know just how to work you up and quickly."
"Please remind me," He never let his ego or confidence drop even a little, usually in complete control while we were having our fun time, but I was bound to change that. Even if it was just him moaning my name, that would be enough for me.
At first, I slowly sat on his cock, raising up my skirt a little so he could have a good view, swiveling my hips around slowly, then leaned up towards him so his tip popped out slightly, teasing by letting it ease in and out, doing it quicker and quicker, then threw myself right back on every inch.
"Knew you were going to do that," He was biting his lip, thinking I didn't hear what he said and whispering in his ear always turned him on, giggling then whispering to him:
"Getting to you already?"
"Be lucky I'm letting you be on top after you snatched my keys and ran," Trying to distract himself, typical, but I made sure I kept that intense excitement around, nibbling on his ear softly, then biting down his neck:
"Don't lie to yourself. You know that this is exactly what you wanted, to see your hot, little boo thang fucking you in a tiny skirt."
Keeping his mouth shut was a sign, stepping it up and holding the seat, rocking back harder and quicker, moaning myself, but making sure he was the one who really, really felt it, especially when my walls began to clamp up.
"Isn't that what you wanted?" I wanted to see how he would respond, getting him to crack a little:
"You know the answer."
I laughed in my moans, resting my head on his shoulder because I wasn't slowing down and I was feeling it, really tight and it had me burning up, but I made sure he heard every single moan and whisper of his name in the sweet tone that wired him up.
"Fuck," He mumbled deep, a groan bubbling in his chest, and with a hard spank to the ass, I shot up a little and moaned louder, gasping when he held the back of my thighs, rocking me down on his cock even harder than I could myself, growling, "You're gonna cum before I do."
"Oh, you're close?" That instantly gave me a boost of energy, bouncing down and topping his speed, him not being able to thrust his hips because of the limited space, seeing if I could get him off before I hit mine.
It was truly a challenge, his hands all over my thighs, ass, and stomach, gripping hard and trying to keep himself together. For me, it made it all harder, creating a small rock of the car, hands pressing up on the ceiling, and my moans reaching some high notes, shaking with the inevitable heading my way.
"Fuck, Y/N," He tried hiding that it was a moan, but it was, arms wrapping around me and bear-hugging me, having my moans break up into gasps, his cock throbbing, and right as his heat shot into me, I whined so loudly, legs tensing up and my slick running hard all over his cock, hugging his head:
"Oh my god, Baron!"
He kept us up straight, still in his arms while we both were panting, his body dropping back into the seat and mine fell back into the steering wheel, having me jump when the horn blared.
"Can I get a second to breathe?" He laughed, pulling me down to his chest.
"I really hope no one heard that," I was out of breath and wheezing, looking around to see if anyone was in the parking lot, not seeing anyone from my line of sight.
"Who gives a shit if they did?" He shrugged, closing his eyes and relaxing, "Damn, that was hot."
"Sure was, baby," I smiled, kissing where his tattoo was behind his ear, then teasing, "Also, totally got you first this time."

The Baroness of Jazz
By Barry Singer
Oct. 17, 2008
IF the mysterious Baroness Pannonica de Koenigswarter is at all remembered today, it is for her proximity to the deaths of two legendary jazz musicians. In 1955 Charlie Parker died on a sofa in her Fifth Avenue home; 27 years later Thelonious Monk died after secluding himself for years in her New Jersey house.
Both deaths made the baroness an immediate target of tabloid headlines and a long-term subject for scurrilous gossip. Almost no one, though, beyond the insular jazz world, could possibly know her whole story: how, until her death in 1988, she championed jazz as both a friend and a generous, if rather unlikely, benefactor.
A Rothschild heiress, she offered her home to countless jazzmen as a place to work and even live, while quietly paying their bills when they couldn’t find work. She chauffeured them to gigs around New York, toured with them as a kind of racial chaperon, and was even known to confront anyone she felt was taking advantage of her friends because they were black.
“I always likened her to the great royal patrons of Mozart or Wagner’s day,” the saxophonist Sonny Rollins said in a telephone interview. “Yet she never put the spotlight on herself. I try not to talk publicly about people I knew in jazz. But I have to say something about the baroness. She really loved our music.”
The baroness first materialized in New York jazz clubs in the early 1950s like some film noir siren, right down to the raven hair and long cigarette holder. She seduced the music’s greatest figures with her friendship, the revolutionists of the bebop era: Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk and many others. Her illustrious family has long refused to discuss her. But now a new book, “Three Wishes: An Intimate Look at Jazz Greats” (Abrams Image), offers a window into her personal life, providing details even her jazz intimates were probably unaware of.
The book is primarily a collection of candid photographs of the musicians taken by the baroness, and a compilation of their varied responses to a favorite question: “What are your three wishes?” On Oct. 30 an exhibition of her original notebooks collecting these snapshots and wish lists will open at the Gallery at Hermès in New York.
“Three Wishes” arrives with the implicit sanction of the Rothschild family, including a six-page introduction by a granddaughter, Nadine de Koenigswarter. The book offers more concrete information about the baroness than has ever before appeared between covers. But the source of her extraordinarily deep bond with jazz musicians remains elusive.
She was born, her granddaughter writes, in London on Dec. 10, 1913. Her full name was Kathleen Annie Pannonica Rothschild, according to her 1935 wedding announcement in The New York Times. She was the granddaughter of Nathan Mayer, the first Lord Rothschild, and the great-granddaughter of Mayer Amschel, the Rothschild patriarch who, from the Frankfurt ghetto, orchestrated his family’s rise. Her father was Nathaniel Charles Rothschild, a partner in the family bank, whose greater passion was entomology, a hobby at which he was both gifted and exceedingly accomplished. According to a great-niece, Hannah Rothschild, who is completing a documentary about her for the BBC, the baroness’s father was plagued by clinical depression that sometimes led the family to hospitalize him. He killed himself in 1923, at 46.
Nica Rothschild, as she was known, became an aviation enthusiast and an accomplished pilot. At 21 she met a kindred spirit at Le Touquet airfield in France. Baron Jules de Koenigswarter, 31, was a French mining engineer, banker and pilot. He was also a widower with a young son, and like Nica, he was Jewish. The baron quickly proposed after just three months; her response was flight to New York. They were married at City Hall in October 1935.
The couple took up residence in Abondant, a 17th-century chateau not far from Normandy. Their first-born child, Patrick de Koenigswarter, recalled in May in an interview published in The National, an Abu Dhabi newspaper, that when the Nazis invaded France, the baron, a lieutenant in the reserves, was called up. His father “left my mother a map, with instructions: If the Germans get to this point, take the children and escape any way you can to your family in England.” Shortly thereafter, his mother did, accompanied by a nanny and a maid, on what proved to be the last train out of Paris. The baron’s mother dismissed her son’s entreaties and instructions. She died at Auschwitz.
The baron joined de Gaulle’s Free French forces and was assigned to the Congo. At his instigation his wife next moved their two children to the United States, placing Patrick de Koenigswarter and his younger sister, Janka, with the Guggenheim family on Long Island. The baroness then somehow rejoined her husband in Africa with the Free French, serving in various capacities including ambulance driver and ending the war as a decorated lieutenant.
One little-known wartime detail lends a different sense to her later arrival in the New York jazz world. Her husband’s extended family, as well as her Hungarian-born mother’s, were nearly all killed in the Holocaust. The baroness’s adoption of New York’s predominantly black jazz family in the war’s aftermath thus seems less the act of a louche dilettante than of a survivor bent on resurrection and rebirth.
“I believe that she could no longer live in any ivory tower after what she saw in the war,” Hannah Rothschild said in a telephone interview. “Privilege offered no protection. The fate of her own mother-in-law proved that. She had experienced the very depths of prejudice herself firsthand.”
The baron entered the French diplomatic service after the war, settling his wife and children first in Norway and then in Mexico. “My father was a very controlling person,” Patrick de Koenigswarter said. “He was adamant about punctuality, while Nica was notorious for being late. She missed appointments, sometimes by days.” He continued, “It didn’t help that my father had no particular interest in the subjects that fascinated her: art and music.”
The baroness always credited her brother, Victor, a jazz fan and amateur pianist who studied with Art Tatum and Teddy Wilson, with introducing her to jazz. Shortly before her death, though, she revealed in a rare interview for the Monk documentary "Straight, No Chaser" the moment when her interest in jazz music escalated into something more.
“I was in the throes of the diplomatic life in Mexico,” she remembered of the years 1949 to 1952, “and I had a friend who got hold of records for me. I used to go to his pad to hear them. I couldn’t have listened to them in my own house, with that atmosphere. I heard them and really got the message. I belonged where that music was. This was something I was supposed to be involved in in some way. It wasn’t long afterwards that I cut out.”
It is well known in jazz circles that the great project of the baroness’s life was the torturously unstable Monk, whom she served as a surrogate wife right alongside Monk’s equally devoted actual wife, Nellie. The baroness paid Monk’s bills, dragged him to an endless array of doctors, put him and his family up in her own home and, when necessary, helped Nellie institutionalize him. In 1958 Monk and the baroness were stopped by the police in Delaware. When a small amount of marijuana was discovered, she took the rap for her friend and even served a few nights in jail.
People have always asked why. What drew her to him so intensely? Was it sex, drugs or groupie-esque infatuation? Clearly her steadfast devotion to Monk’s music propelled their relationship, which both maintained was platonic. In light of her father’s history, though, it seems possible that the underlying bond was love and childhood loss. In Monk, she may have been drawn to the same anguished brilliance that had consumed her father, whom she could not save.
he introduction to “Three Wishes” still leaves unanswered many questions that pursued the baroness throughout her life. Did she abandon her children in her headlong embrace of the jazz life, or were they taken from her? Did she enable addiction in the musicians she loved? Did she buy them drugs? Did she use drugs herself?
These questions once loomed large in her mystique. As her back story deepens, however, their sense of enormity recedes. The baron divorced his wife in 1956 after the scandalous publicity surrounding Charlie Parker’s death in her home. Shaun de Koenigswarter, the couple’s youngest son, recently confirmed that the baron also got custody of the three younger children, Berit (born in 1946), Kari (1950) and himself (1948). “I am the only child who never lived with my mother after she settled in New York in 1953,” he said in an e-mail message, adding that his four siblings lived with her during different periods.
That the baroness in fact lost custody of her three youngest children as a consequence of her love of jazz further illuminates the maternal quality of her presence on the scene. Is it any wonder that she clung to her musicians like family?
“She realized that jazz needed any kind of help it could get,” Mr. Rollins said, “especially the musicians. She was monetarily helpful to a lot who were struggling. But more than that, she was with us. By being with the baroness, we could go places and feel like human beings. It certainly made us feel good. I don’t know how you could measure it. But it was a palpable thing. I think she was a heroic woman.”
It has taken the actual family she left behind a long time to arrive at a similar conclusion. “Not all members of our family were enthused about the life she chose to lead (especially our father!),” Shaun de Koenigswarter wrote. “But over the years, many of those who had initially disapproved — particularly in light of the many viciously biased and racist press reports about her — came to understand and appreciate what she was all about.”
