Good Omens graphic novel update: May 2024

Happy 34th birthday to Good Omens - published in May 1990. We don't need any extra reasons to celebrate Aziraphale and Crowley, but we're always happy to find some.

Thank you to everyone who has completed the PledgeManager so far; as mentioned, this will be open through 2024 into early 2025 to complete. A few key queries that have arisen in the past month:

I ordered via Kickstarter, but when I go onto PledgeManager, it is setting me to Human Tier and/or asking me to pay again. Please check the email that you are using on PledgeManager. The email to access PledgeManager must be the same as the one you used on Kickstarter for the system to connect your account to the order; if your email is not showing a prior order, please try your other emails, or drop us a message from the account you pledged on (and are, presumably, reading this from!) and we can confirm the email address linked to your pledge.

I have been charged twice for shipping. What do I do? We have raised this with PledgeManager, and they say it is a known issue that can occur via Stripe, but it is easily fixed. Please contact [email protected] with information on your order, and note that your shipping has been charged twice, and their system can verify this and process the refund swiftly and easily.

I need to change my address. How do I do that? We have left the option to update your shipping address open on PledgeManager and will do so for as long as possible. Per PledgeManager, here is a step-by-step on how to change your address: Return to your survey (which you can also do by visiting my.pledgemanager.com and using the ‘Forgotten Password’ option if needed) and scroll down on the receipt page. There, you will see the below button. After clicking that, you will be taken to the first page of the survey and will just need to click through to the shipping page. On the shipping page, you can use the ‘Create New Address’ button to enter their updated address.

Good Omens items...

The desk at Good Omens HQ is slowly filling up with prototypes, the latest of which appears to be as popular as Aziraphale and Crowley, and for good reason. We are, of course, talking about the ducks. Here's an early version of the duck mug:

We've got some early prototype designs of the trading cards too. Illustrator Steve Gregson has begun work on the base card deck illustrations, to be unveiled in future, and designs for some of the variants are fully underway. Here are some early samples of graphic novel variant cards from Colleen Doran, and Rachael Stott's Crowley:

The base packs (Hellhound+) currently include 80 cards, and have caused quite heated games with those who have test-played it so far on their attempts to thwart (or indeed cause) the apocalypse. Hellhound+ backers will also get a booster pack alongside the main game. Rarities for sharing at random in these orders are shaping up nicely too. Hoping to share some of the base pack design imminently.

We often end with an update from Colleen, whether that's her art, or her shots from her studio. However, we thought it was about time we invite Colleen to update you herself, so we are handing the rest of this month's over to your ineffable artist for a glimpse inside the process of making Good Omens. Enjoy.

As you may imagine, I’m having a wonderful time working on the Good Omens graphic novel. The Dunmanifestin team asked me to pop in and give you a look at my process.

The task of adapting a beloved novel into graphic novel format is a complex, wonderful sort of pressure cooker. Even without the well-publicized complications I got smacked with over the last year, it promised to be an intense, time-consuming project.

The graphic novel is about the book and not the show. Getting Michael Sheen and David Tennant out of my head was quite a task. I’ve seen it dozens of times and I adore it, but I to had devote a lot of time to re-reading the novel and listening to the audiobook to clear my head of them.

The few times I allowed myself to watch the show again screwed me up a bit. So, I won’t watch it again until I am completely finished with every drawing. Maybe a view-a-thon will be my reward for finishing the book.

But I’m getting ahead of myself. There’s still a lot to do, so let me show you it.

Before we knew the Kickstarter fundraiser would do well, the graphic novel was to clock in at 164 pages. After the good news of the Kickstarter success, I got permission to take the story to 200 pages. That meant a major rewrite and redraw on some dozens of thumbnails and layouts.

And you guys are getting a much longer book.

Not complaining one bit. I was so happy to get more space to give breathing room to the ending.

Anyway, here's a look at my workspace.

To the left is my laptop computer with the script. The laptop is connected to my graphics computer via ethernet, and all my reference is on the main system, from which I share files.

On my older projects, I dutifully printed out every bit of reference. I think this is the first project where I’ve done all reference and organizing on my MAC.

As you can see, I draw comics the old-fashioned way – by hand – and there is my script on the computer.

But I do all the coloring on this project on the MAC. I know some people hate Photoshop, but even if I wanted to switch, I don’t have the time to dive into a new system.

That entire box with all the narrow drawers in it you see there contain Good Omens pages in varying degrees of completion. Finished pages are at the bottom with layouts, pencils, and partial inks toward the top. The middle drawer contains templates, French curves, and a ruler.

The box isn’t fancy art studio equipment. It’s just a Childcraft brand puzzle storage rack. I realized a long time ago the heavy wooden bookcases, puzzle racks, and construction paper storage made for children’s classrooms made great modular storage for professional art spaces. It’s solid as a rock, heavy so little children can’t tip it, and I can move it and rearrange my space however I like.

The final art is drawn on 11”X14” Strathmore 500 acid free Bristol.

I do all my prelims as tiny “thumbnail” sketches, some in ink, some in very loose pencil. I keep them organized in this Levenger notebook. The thumbnail paper is both Canson brand, and Blue Line Pro, and both are acid free. Blue Line Pro is good for ink, but Canson is better for pencil because it has more tooth. I usually use Canson.

Using the Levenger hole puncher, I perforate my pages and keep them organized in a Levenger Circa system. It’s pricey, but I love it. There are other brands far less expensive, however.

The ruler shows how tiny the thumbnails are.

If the storytelling is clear at this small size, then it will be clear in the final.

I redo quite a bit as I go along, as you can see from the sequence below.

Since I did multiple rewrites, adding a large section at the end and popping in earlier scenes I originally had to skip, this meant redoing almost all the page numbers about 4 times.

Nearly went barmy.

I use the construction method of drawing, as you see. This is an old-school technique. Some people seem to assume that artists always use computers and tracing for their drawings, but most cartoonists of my generation work extemporaneously. There’s quite a bit of noodling around and searching in the sketches. Using too much reference often results in stiff, dead work.

In comics, it’s very important to make sure you’ve considered word balloon placement when designing a page. The script for Good Omens is more copy-heavy than most modern comic book scripts because I want to preserve as much of the clever original language as I can.

Here I scramble about working out the word balloon space allowance.

Here’s a deeper look at the process for page 2 from thumbnails to final color.

Now here is where things get a little weird. What you’re about to see is a process called flatting.

If you color a comic without first flatting the art, you are consigning yourself to many extra hours of labor and frustration.

Flatting is a way to tell the computer to select areas inside the black lines so that whenever you click on that particular color, you can paint inside that area perfectly. Since the computer only understands 1 and 2 - or on and off - when you tell that computer to stick to that area, that is what it will do.

There are computer programs that you can use to create your flats. I use Multi-Fill. The results are uniquely ugly, but they get the job done. Here is what that looks like.

But pretty much all I have to do from this point on is click each block of color and change it to whatever I like. The result is this:

I also experimented with selecting areas of the line work as color holds, but I’m getting into more complicated color technique than we may have time for at this point. But from here, I can start painting.

And the painting stage looks like this.

Since I wasn’t entirely sure exactly how I wanted to approach this color style, I took screen shots of some of the changes I made as I went along. In the shot at the left, I’ve given Aziraphale’s heavenly self a golden glow by using a color hold on the line. But I found it needed more contrast to make his figure pop, so I darkened it in the next shot.

I use the computer to create the initial flats, but I either do the final flats myself, or I have help from Julmae Kristoff and/or Dee Cunniffe.

The flats are (usually) not intended to be part of the final work. They are a technical tool.

For example, here are the original, computer-generated flats for one scene in Good Omens.

Since I’m running behind on the book, I’ve brought in Dee Cunniffe to do some extra color work. He is a wonderful colorist, as well as an excellent flatter. I’m not sure to what extent I’ll be handing pages to Dee at this point, because I’m very controlling, and I want to make absolutely certain there are no stylistic anomalies in the art, and I want all the Crowley and Aziraphale pages for myself, is that too much to ask?

I use Faber Castell Pitt Artist pens for my inking. I sometimes use an old-fashioned crowquill as well, but Faber Castells are easier to control, and the ink uses real pigment instead of dye like many markers. All of my originals are created with longevity in mind: acid-free and lightfast. I want the drawings to be fade-proof.

And that is a quick tour of the work so far.

A thousand thanks to Neil Gaiman and the Dunmanifestin team for their incredible kindness and patience, and that goes double for all Good Omens supporters out there. Your indulgence is appreciated more than I can adequately express. I am truly sorry to have been the cause of the delay in the book, but I can only make it up to you by doing my very best.

BTW, many years ago, I found a little yellow duckling who was getting beaten up by the other ducks, so I saved him and took him to my home to live until my parents adopted him, since they had a nice yard and a pond, and I didn’t.

He had a birth defect and could not fly, which is probably why the other ducks were pecking at him.

He got to stay in the family house, and eat goldfish crackers, and swim in the tub. Eventually they built him his own house. We called it the Duck Majal.

He lived for ten years.

I named him Fred because I’d been watching Breakfast at Tiffany’s when I heard him quacking for help that day we met, and Holly Golightly’s brother was named Fred.

So, here’s to you Fred.

Y'all, Freefall Gambit is so good 😩❤️‍🔥 Loved the return of Onychinus Sylus! He was aura farming so hard in this card, I had to restrain myself from audibly fangirling ijbol. I do feel like this card is sort of preparing us for the upcoming branch, where we'll most likely see alot more of this type of stuff and of this particular dynamic of SylusMC. Of being on opposing sides. Lots of angst and potential for drama, as well as self reflection and growth on especially MC's part.

My sole complaint is that Sylus isn't wearing the suit from the illustration ＿|￣|● I love his Onychinus fit as much as the next person but man... that suit... I will cry if they intend on forever gatekeeping it.

Because I want to avoid spoiling anyone that doesn't have the card yet, I've decided to write down some of my immediate thoughts below the cut.

Let's get the angsty predictions out of the way first – these lines set my alarm bells off. I feel like they are foreshadowing that something of Sylus' will indeed get taken or lost. Or rather someone. That someone ofc being MC, his most precious treasure.

I'll admit that these would not have alarmed me had it not been for certain lines in Sylus' birthday event and in Greedy Heart. I go into why exactly those lines make me uneasy in the linked post, and I just feel like the above ones further reinforces my theory. Call me paranoid or angst obsessed, but I predict pain for both SylusMC and for us in the main story, perhaps even in the coming branch.

On a similar note, just as how Sylus' vulnerability and fear (MC, and MC getting hurt or worse respectively) has been brought up more than once recently, so has MC's. Namely, that Sylus will get caught and put away, or become weak. We see these fears in Valleydream Bloom and in this card, as well as in Where Hearts Live. So things might be building up exactly to that.

I thought it was interesting how MC specifically mentions that the Association have Evol suppressing equipment. Which leads me to believe that said equipment could potentially be used against Sylus at some point to subdue him (provided of course that Sylus' powers are indeed Evol and not demonic/draconic based, but that is an eventual topic for another day). Idk but something tells me that Sylus will get captured whether willingly (most likely) or unwillingly. After all, we do see Sylus behind bars in the music video to Visions Opposées.

Could it be foreshadowing or just a neat visual? Only time will tell.

Me personally though, I am leaning towards the former, and I can see both MC's and Sylus' fears coming to fruition. Maybe even in a connected way (MC gets kidnapped and/or hurt and Sylus jumps in to save her but gets weakened or subdued in doing so, or Sylus gets captured by the Association, MC gets gravely injured trying to save him and maybe in the process triggers Sylus' dragon form and with it MC's memories? Boom. Several birds one stone. Helluva plotline imo)

What I still don't believe will come to pass however is either of them perma dying. This is an otome gacha. The main character nor LI can't die, especially not in a game as young and fresh as Love and Deepspace. So on that front I am not at all worried. Doesn't mean the angst we do get won't hurt a lot, though. But that being said, SylusMC will persevere in the end. Trust. Neither will let the other get torn away from them. Either will move heaven and earth to bring their lover back come what may.

Moving on...

I thought this was a nice callback to Sylus' anecdote

Here Sylus is revealed to actually be a sort of deepspace Robin Hood. We stan.

And the crowd cheered!!!

Also this is actually why Sylus jumped out of the plane. Man needed some cool and fresh air after this comment made all his blood flow south...

This makes me cackle 😭 bro is so unserious. And actually kind of insane, but again, we stan.

MC is living the dream. Do you know what I'd sacrifice to wrap my arms around that waist?? Happy for my girl though 💞 ( and for Sylus, you know that man is on cloud 9 here).

I adore that the card ends on a sweet and nostalgic note, with them gazing at the moon... like they used to in a distant past 💗

the protestant reformation being real in solangelo's relationship makes me Think so much, mostly about silly little disagreements it would cause (beef over the eucharist, weirdly strong opinions about different books in the Bible, Nico going to bat for Mary) but also about how those backgrounds would impact their thought process when they're introduced to camp and the Gods.

I honestly cannot remember for the life of me if its canon that Will has a bookshelf with mythology texts or if its just a long held fanon belief but regardless I do think his approach would be text based. Will knows the Bible and how to read it (remembers his grandma's worn copy covered in pink highlighter and sticky notes, knows the passages his youth pastor pointed him to when he admitted to having a crush on a boy, can recite the exact verses that taught him shame) and his first reaction is to get his hands on Homer and Hesiod and Ovid and pull out his own pink highlighter to draw his own conclusions. Being a son of Apollo but also brought up to read and interpret religious text, that sort of poetry would just click in his brain. It would seem very natural to him for each camper to have a personal relationship with their godly parent, which would of course make it sting even more when it turns out Apollo doesn't really touch base all that often and he was actually lucky to even be claimed in the first place.

Nico, on the other hand, would probably not even consider that meeting a God was remotely possible even if they were real if he wasn't introduced to three of them within his first 24 hours as a demigod. It makes perfect sense that he would align himself with the minor Gods because what is a Catholic Saint if not functionally a minor God and therefore the logical first point of contact in Nico's mind. And on that note of course he's obsessed with mythomagic!! That shit is like Catholic prayer cards with stats!! He probably doesn't know much about the Bible itself, but coming from a very old and established religious culture, he knows all about art and ritual. Will probably grew up with some Kinkade-esque illustrations hung around a prayer hall, but Nico's memories of mass consist of zoning out and looking at mosaics and paintings, and then when he had those memorized moving on to architectural sculpture and endless gilded decorations. He can't name a Bible verse, but he can remember that St Lawrence is associated with the grill and a winged lion means he's looking at St Mark. When he sees the blue Will's eyes for the first time he thinks not of the sky, but of the blue of Mary's cloak, the blue of purity, virtue, and devotion. He takes to Greek art and architecture before he processes the written mythology, and after appreciating the number of male nudes he's allowed to look at, it also occurs to him that much of it is actually very, very familiar. He thinks the first statue of Apollo he sees is Christ at first before he notices the lyre. Will might be weirded out at first by the little rituals he's introduced to around camp, something buried deep in his brain yelling about demons when he incinerates his leftovers for the first time, but Nico adjusts a little easier. Incense and wine smell like his childhood, and his general creepiness might stem more from his comfort level with death and martyrdom than the underworld.

At some level I also think Nico associates divinity with sacrifice and suffering, leading him down a hero's path and contributing to a bit of self martyrdom, while Will associates it with salvation and teaching. He also feels a sort of personal responsibility for that salvation which could manifest as an evangelizing instinct but mostly urges him to heal as many people as possible.

#once again i find it very natural that hades fell for a catholic because what is catholicism if not a long standing death cult #and also as the god of wealth they would have shared an appreciation for opulence and shiny things #i could be convinced to start thinking about maria as one of many virgin marys in the series #(symbolically so please do not try to tell me shes actually not a virgin i know this)#my moms name is jill and i told everyone in preschool that the jack and jill rhyme was about her because i am a shameless liar #but I think Nico would do a similar thing with ave maria #if you would believe it this thought process did not come out of all the pope talk happening #it comes from me having to explain confirmation to a protestant AGAIN #i wonder what nico and biancas saint names would be if they were confirmed....#nico di angelo #will solace #solangelo #pjo

The interpretive meaning of each card is expressed on its face with a small excerpt of the game's text. The Minor Arcana are divided into four suits of Harry's Attributes—Motorics, Psyche, Physique, Intellect—and each card in that suit is a quote from a skill under that Attribute. The Major Arcana are assigned quotes from other sources like NPC dialogue or Thought Cabinet problems & solutions. Pips for the Minors are counted with diamonds like the game's skill points; each actor or title is printed with their in-game color, but made shiny & metallic with bronzing powder.

🎊🎊 Desert Bus for Hope starts for 2023 on nov. 11th and i have made an item this year for the craftalong that will be up for giveaway between 6am-12pm on Monday the 13th! 🎊🎊 It is a full tarot deck based on Disco Elysium and it has several pieces of my heart & soul in it but NOT my blood because i put a bandaid right on that :) donations for this and any other auctions & giveaways for Desert Bus go to Child's Play Charity.

notes: i did not make a whole new interpretive model for this deck, apologies, that was outside of my scope. it's generally compatible with a Rider-Waite model, with Motorics for Wands, Psyche for Cups, Physique for Swords, and Intellect for Disks. (full distribution of text listed by card, linked below. any spelling or transcription errors you find there, i promise i fixed them in print—that's copied from my digital mockup which was copied hastily from screenshots.)

i also do not track hours on these kinds of projects because that way lies madness, but i will say: i knew how much time it would take to print it. it was a lot but i was not worried about it, i know how to print. i was very worried about how much time it would take to absorb the sheer amount of text, and distribute it across the cards, and really get an array i believe in. i was right to worry, and i have absolutely had a few anxious nightmares about discovering the Perfect excerpt that should've gone in and i missed it, and the suit of Intellect made me want to lay on the floor a few times, but still! i believe there's many versions of a deck you could make from this game and this one is a good one.

i think the Minors fit really well with the double-edged sword of Harry's skills, their advice, their priorities. the circular way the Fool-World assignment works out makes me smile every time. The colors on The Star came out so nice. i think Justice fulfills some of my favorite things about Kim's character & purpose in the story. i worried sometimes that editing to such short clips would lose too much of the politics of the game, but of course you can't really take them out and they're especially present in the Majors—the Devil and the Hierophant, The Star and The Sun. i've wanted to design a tarot deck for years and i love this game deeply and i let this idea percolate for a few months and it never stopped making me laugh so here it is, & given a beautiful purpose :)

i also literally could not have done this without xyrilin's Disco Reader and the FAYDE On-Air Playback Experiment to navigate the dialogue and skill checks. Really couldn’t have tied the whole concept & colophon in its final bow without the Disco Reader :)) thank thank thank, they're so fun to investigate that it was honestly very difficult to focus on my task instead of veering off and exploring every branch in an extremely disorganized way.

actual printing went well honestly, very few problems! i think that means i'm getting pretty good at planning one of these monstrosities, although perhaps it also means i'm not challenging myself enough. hmm. no that's silly there's 78 ding dang cards in this thing. anyway the drop & replace formes worked well, no registration issues. mum convinced me to overprint another half a deck's worth of cards when I was printing backs & borders and of course she was right :/ there were a handful of cards that actually had better line breaks and fewer lines total in true type than in the digital mockup, so i needed all the spares I had to put those new short quotes into the appropriate border breakage. next time i will not question her.

bonus photo of the kind of trash notes i always take to plan things like how many borders were printed with space for short excerpts vs long excerpts, and how many of those are majors vs. minors, because they have a slightly different frame at the bottom edge, etc.

Gundam Wing is celebrating their 30th anniversary and who else did they draw beside our boy? HIS QUEEN THAT'S WHO!

LOOK AT THEM! IT'S EVERYTHING THEY DESERVE! This illustration is a wonderful homage to not only the show but their relationship. The feathers, the party, her dress we never got to really see the night they first danced, the birthday card, the teddy bear he gifted her. And of course their smiles! Those are the smiles of a couple who finally get to be happy together. My precious babies. ; w ;

Fun fact my fiancé also enjoys the gundam franchise and let me know that the current gundam card game has Heero and the Wing Gundam being the strongest cards to play together, and the strongest base (location) card is St. Gabriel's, who we know Relena attends as well. QwQ I am still overjoyed about this even though he let me know about this last year.

I too hope to give a small peek into something I've been working on to celebrate Gundam Wing's 30th anniversary on April 7th, but it won't be ready until probably June. :'3

To say your homeland was a haven, would be to underestimate the tranquility that lies within its soil. Between the endless fields of wheat and the sun that gently cradles you in its hands, delicately peppering your skin in kisses, you'd dare say Aedes Elysiae is a hidden heaven on Amphoreus, saved for the eyes of a select few.

Which, of course, means you make the most of this peace, as do the rest of the few citizens; After all, no one can find you here. It all begins with running down the hills under the delightfully bright sunlight, running your hands through the wheats till you have to go home, and ends in basking under the evening sunrise with your closest companion, since a very tender age; Phainon, one of the most consistent presences in your life.

Many would insist that excitement comes in instability and spontaneity, that there is a thrill in not knowing what's ahead in your plans, or your future; But you disagree with the sentiment. To you, there is nothing more comforting in the endless repeat of sunrises and sundowns, the awfully predictable growth and wither patterns of plants, the way every day seems to go right about the same. It is secure, and you haven't any need of worrying about something as silly and distant (at the time) as surprises. If something were to happen, it would certainly not reach you, nor Phainon. After all, teenage years are merely as long as a breath, and you'd hate to not live them out how you'd like.

You reveled in that sort of stability. So, now here you sit, for what feels like the hundredth time since you were mere children, under the sun, gazing at the wheats; But he doesn't seem to be looking this time — which is an anomaly in itself, but that's okay — instead fiddling with a card in his hand, one that is the current topic of conversation.

“Deliverer? That's not so bad of a title – what bothers you so much about it?”

“Ah, well. It's just.. I feel that we have no need for that sort of thing. Aedes Elysiae is a peaceful place, y'know? I don't want to just, have to leave, like that.” Phainon looks at the card between his index and middle finger, twirling to look at the patterned back and then the illustration at the front; The words ‘The Deliverer’ seem to glare at him, forcing his shoulders down with their weight and making his heart sink.

Your tear your eyes off the sun, turning to look at him as the two of you have your backs against a tree, your knees hugged to your chest and flashing him a comforting smile, “I don't think you'll have to. Maybe you can be Aedes Elysiae's personal deliverer! That could be cool. Protect us from the faeries, n' all that.”

Your words are met with a huff in the form of a laugh — he seems to be lightening up, you note. “From the faeries? I thought we left those back in our childhood.” When he got the card. You're almost surprised Cyrene let him hold onto it, and you're even more surprised at how well be has preserved it. There are only a few marks on it, as well as a bit of wear and tear here and there.

“Hey, you never know.” You only offer him a shrug of your shoulders, when his head raises to level with you from side-on. “Maybe they'll start stealing our things again one day – Purely for old times sake.”

“You can't actually still be holding a grudge.”

“They stole my flower crown, okay?! Do you know the sheer amount of time and effort it even takes to make one of those things?”

Phainon huffs out a laugh under his breath, twirling the card once more before pocketing it; both physically, and mentally. He can ponder on it again, later. Your sudden head on his shoulder doesn't allow him to think much, after all; A natural repellent of any sort of doubt, that's what you were. “Frankly, you shouldn't have taunted them.”

“Fair point,” you begin, giving him some hope, “but hell no. I was in the right.”

You still remember how the two of you used to laugh in sync, how your existences seemed to be intertwined, as if tied together by the hands of fate herself; You were made to exist alongside him, and he was made to exist alongside you. Two perfect puzzle pieces, if you will, like oxygen and fire.

Alas, heaven is not always eternal, for misfortune exists behind every fortune; Light casts a shadow, and the brighter the light, all the darker the shadow will be, like a void, never-ending and all-consuming. The sun seems to burn in your face as you run, panting and frantically searching around your burnt village- Just where is Phainon, anyway? The Deliverer is a hefty title indeed, but you could swear that that is precisely what he is to you.

So you run down the fields that previously calmed you, dread settling in your heart; Cyrene is dead, the village is bathed in crimson flame that will eternally scar the once prosperous soil, your parents perished and it's almost as if there is no light at the end of the tunnel. Except Phainon.

At the bottom of the hill is where you find him, Cyrene laying limp on the ground by his feet and painting the once pure wheats a bloody red, and you stop a distance away. Did you think it was going to save you? Mayhaps. But you are confused, above all; What happened to him? Why have his eyes lost all life, why are his shoulders slumped and why is he wielding a blade of the finest craftsmanship? Who is the boy you're laying your eyes on? There is no time to time to dwell on such pointless (and yet, major) questions when he slowly turns to face you, dark coat absorbing the light of the sun and training his sword at you.

You should run for your life. You need to run for your life.

But you realize it is too late for that when he approaches you, raising his blade and bringing it down with force.

With a calculated strike of his weapon, Phainon's peace is abruptly brought to an end, stained in blood and in sin; The card of the deliverer remains untouched by blood as it drifts into the air and lands a small distance away from him: into the future, unstained and pure. But with it, unbeknownst to him, the strings of fate grow tighter, binding him to the future, and the burden of a hundred lifetimes.

Thus, fate can only, if anything, continue to reveal; And every death and sacrifice tempers the speed in which the threads meet their end. In the meantime, as he stands in the middle of the scorching village that he once called home, he may continue to live and breathe, all while a drop of blood begins to drift down the thread that symbolizes his very existence, its destination set to the final knot that binds it to the depths in which where he will, eventually, meet his doom; As we all do.

All while, of course, the future holds a secret plot to kill him. An oath of vengeance, for the deeds of another.

Project Sekai - White Day AU Card Lore/Story Masterpost

In other words: I've become obsessed with a very niche part of this game for no discernible reason and have decided to make my gathered knowledge into a post...

NOTE: This post was written before the 2025 White Day event, so some parts may be missing information or incorrect. All information being referenced comes from the Sekaipedia fan wiki.

(I have decided to put this under a Read More because this is so ungodly lengthy that it has taken actual hours for me to write. I hit the image limit on browser, which is 30. If I didn't put this under a Read More I would've been killed with hammers.)

What is White Day AU?

White Day AU is based off of a series of cards that began releasing in 2022 with the White Day event titled "The Gentleman Thief's Thrilling White Day!?". While at first it may seem like a case of colopale putting the characters in a fun setting with cool outfits, it has become more and more apparent that, with the more White Day events that release, the more this universe is getting expanded upon.

I spent some time last month going over the cards that have released over the course of four separate events, pouring over details in the characters' outfits and the environments that surround them in the illustrations in an attempt to parse what kind of story colopale seems to be telling with these cards.

The events/gachas that all contain White Day AU cards are as follows:

Never Give Up Cooking! - Imperial Soldiers

Relax Teatime - What Awaits at the End of War

The Power Of Regret - Noble Knights Fighting for Supremacy

While it may seem odd that a non-White Day event/gacha is here, it may be due to colopale making the decision to start releasing White Day AU lore outside of White Day events in order to ensure they can make at least one card for every major character (both OCs and vocaloids) before the game reaches the end of it's story.

It is difficult to guess who would be in which faction (more on that below) due to the fact that, regardless of unit or relationships, it is not uncommon for people to be split between factions even if logically they should've been paired together in the same faction.

White Day AU Lore

The setting of the White Day AU is most likely fantasy, due to the medieval aesthetics and fantastical elements like magic and dragons. Something interesting as well is that there seem to be factions--different groups each of the characters belong to--that may be hinting at a conflict between members of the cast.

There are multiple factions to be aware of:

The Knights of White

The Empire

An unnamed third faction

An unnamed fourth faction

I will go over each faction in this order. They can be distinguished from each other through multiple things such as the emblems they wear, the colored gemstones on their outfits, and the color palettes of their uniforms. These things all work in conjunction with one another to show who is allied with who.

The Knights of White

The Knights of White, which I will refer to as the Knights, is one of two primary factions in the White Day AU. Known characters who are currently part of the Knights are...

Tsukasa (Wonderlands x Showtime)

Akito (Vivid BAD SQUAD)

Shiho (Leo/need)

Len (Virtual Singer)

Nene (Wonderlands x Showtime)

Emu (Wonderlands x Showtime)

The Knights are distinguished from the other members of the cast by the eight-pointed star as their faction's crest and uniforms that comprise almost entirely of white, blue, and gold.

The Empire

The Empire, which I also tend to refer to as the Imperials (even though grammatically that is incorrect it just sounds better LMAO) is the second primary faction in the White Day AU. Known characters who are part of the Empire are...

Toya (Vivid BAD SQUAD)

Rui (Wonderlands x Showtime)

KAITO (Virtual Singer)

Miku (Virtual Singer)

Saki (Leo/need)

Imperial outfits tend to comprise of the colors black, red, and gold. Their crest is of a dragon, likely in reference to the dragon in Toya's card. Their outfits also all include a red gemstone of some kind, a gemstone color that is exclusive to this faction.

It should be noted that Rui's Imperial outfit does not include a dragon crest and instead has the eight-pointed star of the Knights. Additionally, Toya's outfit has a rose on it, which you may have noticed is something that appears on the outfits of other characters from other factions. I will come back to these two points later.

From here, we get to the secondary factions of the AU.

Unnamed Third Faction

Third Faction is currently only comprised of two members:

Kanade (Nightcord at 25:00)

Mafuyu (Nightcord at 25:00)

Third Faction does not seem to have a set color palette (the colors that the two share are blue and gold), but they do have a unique emblem: the four-pointed star. While Mafuyu's emblem is visible in her illustration, Kanade's emblem is viewable on her 3D model. Additionally, despite the emblem having similarity to the Knight's emblem, both of them wear the same distinctive red gemstones that the Imperials wear on their outfits.

These details in conjunction lead me to believe that the role of Third is either as a middle-ground or mediating party between the Knights and Imperials.

Unnamed Fourth Faction

Fourth Faction currently only comprises of two members:

Minori (MORE MORE JUMP!)

Airi (MORE MORE JUMP!)

The faction's color palette likely comprises largely of blue/green, red, white, and gold. Their crest is of four lozenges with a circle in the center. Their colors and crest are distinct from all other factions, meaning they are likely working independently and without the influence of the other factions.

Unknown Alliances

Mizuki (Nightcord at 25:00)

Mizuki's outfit does not appear to hold any similarities to the other factions currently present, her palette consisting of white, blue, and silver. While it does hold similarities to the Knights, the outfit that comes with her card includes a heart-shaped emblem both on the outfit and accessory. However, this could mean nothing, as the outfits that Akito and Tsukasa have from this same set do not include Knights emblems on their accessories.

Ichika (Leo/need)

Ichika's current alliance also remains unclear. Her outfit's color palette consists of white, red, and gold, which does not resemble any of the other factions. Her crest is likely the piece of her outfit that resembles a fleur-de-lis with a gemstone in the center. There are some details from a different card (the upper-left corner of the background in Len's 4* from the "The Power Of Regret" event) that may support her being part of a full-fledged faction, but due to other characters lacking this emblem she is currently seen as independent.

There is the possibility that Ichika and Mizuki are actually part of the same faction, but this lacks concrete evidence. For the sake of the argument though, I will mention that not long ago when I was looking over the details of the cards, the crests on their outfits struck me as suspiciously similar in shape (supported by the banners in the upper-right in the background in Mizuki's card). Still, this theory is shaky at best.

And yes, I made sure to check that Mizuki's banners and Ichika's crest do not resemble the background of the "Knights of White" gacha.

White Day AU Story

This is where we start getting into the nitty-gritty of details in the AU, aside from just talking about the factions. That was an important precursor of information to everything else this post talks about.

Meaning of Roses

My suspicion is that the roses represent nobility. Characters with roses present on their outfits are as follows:

Tsukasa (Wonderlands x Showtime)

Akito (Vivid BAD SQUAD)

Mizuki (Nightcord at 25:00)

Shiho (Leo/need)

Len (Virtual Singer)

Toya (Vivid BAD SQUAD)

At first, it was my assumption that those who wear roses are--or were at one point--allied or part of the Knights. However, upon further inspection of the logo for the "Imperial Soldiers" gacha, roses are not exclusive to the Knights faction.

If roses were associated with the Knights, why would it not only be part of Toya's outfit but also included in the "Imperial Soldiers" gacha logo?

Looking at each of the characters who have been seen with the rose on their uniforms and comparing these characters to their canon counterparts from the base game of Project Sekai (aside from Len, sorry Len), these characters being nobility would check out considering their personal histories in canon.

The Royal Guard

This is where we start getting to the most story-filled cards that colopale as released so far.

This unit of characters, which I have personally been referring to as the royal guard, consist of the following:

Nene (Wonderlands x Showtime)

Emu (Wonderlands x Showtime)

Len (Virtual Singer)

Tsukasa (Wonderlands x Showtime)

Rui (Wonderlands x Showtime)

Notably, (almost) all of the characters here are from the canon unit Wonderlands x Showtime, which is likely due to the fact that the event they come from, "The Power Of Regret," is a Wonderlands x Showtime story event (specifically Nene focus). It is because of the fact we got all of Wonderlands x Showtime in this card drop we get the most story, since we have three returning characters.

The royal guard uniforms have the Knights emblem and color palette, clearly displaying the fact that they are a part of that faction. The most distinct parts of their uniforms are their crown-shaped belt buckles, the crown on the back of their gloves, and the shield with a crown engraved on it that they wear as a brooch. Their outfits even have gemstones that correspond with their character colors that we see in-game, which to me only emphasizes their status as high-ranking knights.

Earlier, I pointed out how Rui has the Knights emblem on his Imperial outfit, despite noticeably not being part of the Knights. This is likely because, at some point between these cards and the cards from the "Never Give Up Cooking!" event, Rui deserted from the Knights to join the Empire.

An assumption could be made that the cards are being released in chronological order, however I disagree. Rui would be more likely to defect from the Knights but still carry their emblem with him when he joins the Imperials, rather than holding a connection with the Knights before deserting from the Imperials to join the other side. It is unclear why he would leave the Knights, but I personally believe it may have something to do with the fact that in his 4* from "Never Give Up Cooking!" he is a magic user, while here in the "The Power Of Regret" cards he is not. In other words, I think he joined the Imperials so he could use magic.

This causes the other cards of characters who were part of the royal guard to have very interesting additional information. Tsukasa likely went up in ranking from royal guard to something else entirely, based off of how his 4* from "The Gentleman Thief's Thrilling White Day!?" event has him in a much more regal outfit.

While it is unclear what happened to Len, it should be noted that his 2* from "The Gentleman Thief's Thrilling White Day!?" event is named "Innocent Squire", so maybe something also transpired with his character to lead to his change in position.

There is some speculation among people I discuss these cards with about what exactly Nene and Emu are doing in their cards, but we highly suspect they are actually fighting each other. The tears in Nene's eyes and Emu's determined expression imply that there may be some kind of heartache occurring during whatever clash they're involved in, which would be most likely to happen if the two of them were in combat against one another. The backgrounds of their cards match up well enough to suggest that they are in the same space, as well.

It is unclear what exactly the two of them are fighting about, but it is of my own personal belief that the conflict between them has to do with Rui's desertion from the Knights. It is realistically the only thing I can think of that could possibly push these two into conflict with one another.

It can also be assumed that after Rui's desertion, the royal guard subsequently dissolved since they make no other appearances outside of this set of cards.

It is unclear what Tsukasa and Len are doing in their cards, but they also appear to be in the same location as one another.

Toya's Dragon

In a blog post by colopale, they refer to the dragon as his "aibou" (partner). While it may seem like they're drawing parallels between the dragon and Akito (considering the fact that Akito and Toya are partners in canon), I don't think that Akito is supposed to be the dragon considering the differing allegiances. I think the dragon is just Toya's friend :)

Separated Tenmas

Saki and Tsukasa seem to be on two entirely different sides of the war--the Empire and the Knights respectively. While it remains unclear as to why they're on opposing sides, maybe something happened between them that caused this divide...

Leo/need in Conflict?!

Other than the fact that Saki is a member of the Imperial Army, I'm very curious about what's happening in Shiho and Ichika's cards. Based off of the backgrounds, and while it doesn't look like it at first, they appear to be in the same location. You can see in the background of Ichika's card, on the other side of the courtyard, you can see a set of windows that are the same shape as the windows light is being cast through in Shiho's card. Assuming the courtyard is symmetrical, you can reasonably guess they're in the same hall. Additionally, the pillars appear to be similar at the very least. If they're fighting, I wonder what its about?

Details about the outfit names...

I want to take a moment to talk about outfit names for each of the characters since I couldn't find anywhere else to talk about this. I will be dividing these by the event/gacha they were released in.

The Gentleman Thief's Thrilling White Day!? - Knights of White:

Tsukasa - Chivalrous Chevalier

Akito - Noble Paladin

Mizuki - Optatio Eques

None of these are exactly notable aside from the name of Mizuki's outfit. The name translates from Latin to "Knight's Choice" (machine translation), which adds some information to her character that, while I have trouble parsing due to the lack of information about her whole deal in this AU, I still find interesting.

Also note that the world "chevalier" just means "knight" in French.

Never Give Up Cooking! - Imperial Soldiers:

Toya - Chevalier Noir

Rui - Mad Sorcerer

KAITO - Wandering Gunner

KAITO's outfit name is intriguing to me and leads me to believe he may be more of a mercenary type of character rather than someone who is absolutely loyal to the Empire.

Relax Teatime - What Awaits at the End of War:

Kanade - Fleeting Light Knight Attire

Ichika - Illuminated Courtyard Knight Attire

Mafuyu - Abyss Knight Attire

There's not much of note here, but I am of the personal belief that Kanade and Mafuyu are matching.

The Power Of Regret - Noble Knights Fighting for Supremacy:

Nene - Fier Chevalier

Emu - Sourire Chevalier

Len - Hability Chevalier

Two of the names here are French. Nene's translates to "Proud knight" and Emu's to "Smile Knight" (both machine translated). Len's name means "Able Knight" (could also be read as "Skillful Knight"), the word "habile" just being an obsolete form of the word "able."

My personal thoughts...

I just know the AkiToya divorce is insane. Couldn't be as dramatic as whatever L/n and WxS are going through right now tho tbh... At least it looks like KanaMafu and MMJ are having fun times in yuri land

Also in the next White Day AU card drop if Ena isn't part of the Knights faction I'm gonna--[remembers suicide jokes are bad for my mental health]--I'm gonna surpass RAD WEEKEND

Aaand some of arts I made for a university. The whole first course we’ll be doing different projects based on already existing books or other media pieces, so I’ve chosen Epic Of Gilgamesh cause Mesopotamian mythology is cool and sexy.

The fist four pics is from the board game based on Gilgamesh’s story (1-3 is cards and the fourth pic is an illustration from the manual), the last two pics are just some goofy designs — Enkidu, Gilgamesh, Enki and Ninhursag. Sorry for Russian test, I’m just too lazy to translate.

Yeah, I drew them a little different from their original descriptions, but eh, it’s for a sake of diversity.

Oh, and I’m studying animation! I still can’t quite believe that I’m in this point of my life.

To celebrate the beginning of the Johto Enjoyer Community (or the JEC), we're starting off strong with a bingo card!

Unlike many other bingos, each square has a task instead of a prompt. The goal here is to encourage everyone to participate in a part of the fandom they might not otherwise---artists can try their hand at writing, fic writers can figure out how to organize moodboards, board creators can practice their drawing skills, and so on! But don't worry, all the minimum requirements (listed at the bottom of this post) are very low, so every task should be accessible to every person regardless of skill level or circumstance!

There's even a prize: a free full-body illustration like styled like Kris above for any pokemon/character (not just within the Pokemon universe) of your choosing, drawn by yours truly! Of course, you can join in without going for the prize, but in order to be eligible, take a look below...

The Rules:

The winner of this event will be chosen by raffle. Every confirmed bingo will earn you one raffle entry. That means that the more bingos you complete, the higher chance you'll have of winning!

To get a bingo, you must complete the tasks of five squares in a row, horizontally or vertically (not diagonally). Each bingo must have five original attempts, even if you've already covered a square in a previous bingo. All task attempts must be centered around Johto in some way, though mentioning other regions is by no means strictly prohibited.

To submit a bingo to the form, you must upload an image of your bingo marked on the card provided below. Then for each task, you can provide either an image (required for the Leave Some Love task) of your attempt or a link to where you've posted it online. You can only submit one bingo per form. Once I've confirmed your bingo, I'll add your entry to the raffle pool!

Not every task attempt has to be posted for the world to see. If you're brave, you might make a public call-out post targeting your some underrated people in the community (as a whole, not just the JEC). There's no one way to do it, but do try to be genuine about your compliments! It's no fun for anyone if you just say is "hey i like your stuff" and leave it at that. Draft a Drabble - write a fanfic that is at least 100 words long. For those not in the know, a drabble is a piece of fiction that is exactly 100 words long. Though, it's not a strict definition, as some drabbles may be a little more or a little less. Any subject is allowed as long as it's a creative story---you could write about an event, for example---so don't worry about limiting yourself to characters if that's not your thing!

Dig in the Details - write an analysis on any topic of your choosing. Want to pick apart a character's personality based on their manga dialogue? We'd love to hear it! Got an idea for the best possible competitive team using all Johto pokemon? Go for it! Just really need an excuse to complain about why the level curve is so bad? We've all been there! An essay would likely be the easiest way to do this, but there's no singular best method---you could even make a powerpoint presentation if you wanted!

Pick a Pocket Monster - choose any pokemon to discuss! Whether its your overall favorite, a particular partner you had on one of your playthroughs, or even your most expensive trading card, we want to hear everything that makes this pokemon stand out to you over the rest.

Doodle a Darling - draw a pokemon, character, item, location, or any other subject of your choosing. Drawings do not have to be full illustrations (though they certainly can be), nor is skill/quality a point of judgement here. If you feel like going the extra mile, you could even explain why you chose your particular subject!

Curate a Collection - create a compilation of media based on a certain subject. This might be a moodboard, collage, pinterest board, music playlist, fic rec, or even a gif set! Please keep in mind that as per our community's rules, you may not use any fanworks that you have not created yourself. Make sure to credit the sources of other pieces of media when appropriate.

Fix it with Fanon - share a headcanon/theory/etc. you enjoy! You might know how to fill a plothole from the manga, have an idea on how to fix a weird game mechanic, want to share your favorite AU, or even have a fakemon you designed just for Johto. As long as it's a fandom-original idea, it'll fit the bill!

Convince the Crowd - try to persuade everyone to agree with you on a certain topic! Maybe there's a pokemon type you believe trumps all others, or maybe you're really passionate about which movie it the best. You can also reply to points other people have made if you have an opposing view. Whatever you choose, be respectful when making your argument!

Knicks and Knacks - make an arts-and-crafts project themed around a topic of your choosing. The sky's the limit here---you could try your hand at little accessories like bracelets or pins, cobble together a short zine, make a paper doll, design cool profile icons or web stamps, stitch together an edit or meme, put on some cosplay, and so much more! As long as it's something you made with your own hands (so to speak), anything goes.

Script a Scenario - portray a situation using a medium other than standard illustration/writing. This could include playscripts, comics, texting fics, or even the photo booth feature in Pokemas! If you need to give a short written description to clarify what's going on, that's fine, but it shouldn't be the star of the show.

Free Space - Choose any of the above categories to complete!

The Minimum Requirements:

Images/GIFs - 500x500 px

Writing - 5-6 sentences or ~75 words

Moodboards/Pinterest Boards - 5 images

Collages - 5 main elements (not including minor decorations)

Playlists - 3 songs with a short explanation each

working on doing a little zine out of that 'my oc as symbolism' meme for valdes, using a mix of collage writing and illustration... got stuck between 'i want to share this' and 'i want people to experience it as a whole piece so you can have a very awkwardly cropped page out of context. this one is for 'oc as an object'

do you guys wanna hear about probably valdes's most perverse trait. infodump under the readmore

A trait of his i've never really mentioned here is his thing with good luck charms. As part of his fixation on luck (and general baffling life choices), he's not really flush with money despite helping rig casinos for a living because he prefers playing for other people's belongings. Most of the appeal of gambling to him is the social aspect of it... he's a big peoplewatcher and it's very appealing to him to meet people and to watch them up close in that sort of environment.

A lot of his characterization is based in the (apparently real?) gambling strategy of just being very... weird and annoying at the table, both so people can't read you and to get under the other players' skin. not to mention i imagine that working for the casino means he can't actually get those big payouts from winning... so a lot of the time to throw people off and to not cut into his own paycheck he'll ask for a personal belonging instead.

And of course he knows he'll win, because he's being paid to card count and cheat, so he knows he'll get whatever strange thing he asks for. actual good luck charms, or the person's wedding ring, or a picture out of their wallet, or anything random out of their pockets as a little memento of getting to play with somebody and watch them lose. it's. he doesn't have a fetish for gambling but there is kind of a voyeuristic angle to it.

it's why his ref sheet mentions he wears mismatched jewelry :) because he's wearing his little trophies from cheating people. freaky magpie ass

(I wrote all of this and the actual point of the piece really is more about his self image. lol. well I hope i can share the full project soon)

//Thought I could start writing up the episode where someone gets the Fox Miraculous -claps happily- Hooray~ Plus, an episode where it's CHLOE making a new friend (Ya'll totally thought it was Izuku, didn't you? XD). Anyways here we go with the story~

This post will include: A new Fox Holder, Nice(?)!Chloe, Chloe Sugar, OOCness from some characters other than Chloe, The "Chloe is trying the nice card to impress Izuku" train, Cheeky!Adrien, Adrien being a little shit, BAMF!ILadybug!zuku

Chloe didn't think she would be invited to the art room of all places.

Apparently her friends wanted her to join in preparation for some art competition that was going on this week, and the art teacher encouraged the students to showcase any artistic passions.

Izuku was invited too, and Chloe couldn't say no to that.

She was about to meet up with them but spotted someone under the staircase.

It was a boy? Girl? Chloe couldn't tell, but they seemed way too pretty.

Not as pretty as her of course.

Curiosity got the best of her and the rich blonde snuck behind them.

They seemed to be writing something.

She blinked when she saw the other person's phone screen.

"Are you a fan or something?"

The person jumped in shock and whirled around to face Chloe shakily, paling as they dropped their notebook to the ground.

Not waiting for an answer, Chloe picked up the notebook and took a look at the notes. She blinked when she saw what was written on the pages and spoke out loud.

"Diary of Tīrumushi?" She pursed her lips and continued, "I saw the Might-Illustrator today. Now that he's no longer controlled by. Hawkmoth, he's become true superhero like Feline Noire and I."

'Might-Illustrator? Oh, right, that's Nath's character from his comic about the Bug and me...'

"I'm sure he'd make an awesome partner, but I'm too shy to ask him," Chloe made a face, raising a hand without looking to hold the owner of the notebook back while still reading, "And I don't want to talk to Feline Noire about it either because…SHE MIGHT GET JEALOUS?!"

Chloe felt herself ticked off for a moment, and even smacked her purse lightly since she could hear Plagg snickering.

The notebook gets snatched away from her hands as Adrien appeared with a smile.

"You and Marc seem to be having fun~"

"Marc?"

"The owner of this notebook and who's currently crying in a fetal position right now?"

The two look over seeing Marc Anciel whimpering and sobbing while begging for their book back.

Adrien gives it back to Marc and asks what was going on, and Chloe explains.

"Oh! You're writing a story about Tirumushi and Feline Noire based on Nathaniel's comic on the school website?" Adrien hums before snapping his fingers, "Why don't we show to Nathaniel~?"

Cue Adrien dragging both Chloe and Marc into the art room.

Izuku and Nathaniel were found chatting away about superheroes, especially about All Might.

"Nath! Chloe found you a writer for your comic!"

The red head looked up from his fanboying with a confused look, tilting his head, "...Chloe did?"

Adrien nodded as he nudged Marc forward and grinned, "This is Marc Anciel. They've been creative writing apparently from the fanart you've been doing for the school website and the TealBlog~"

Marc blushed as they hid their notebook in their jacket, looking away with embarrassment, "E-er, sorry, um, nice to meet you? B-But I didn't want to disturb anyone...."

Izuku spoke up this time with a warm smile, "You're not disturbing anyone! Actually, this art room is open to everyone~"

And he soon points out what everyone's doing:

Marinette was currently drawing up different style of hats for Gabriel Agreste's upcoming fashion show.

Alix was spray-painting the wall with some graffiti art with Sabrina assisting her.

Kagami was invited to Françoise Dupont as a guest as she was sketching up some drawings of Izuku, who was supposed to be her model for the day.

Even Alya and Nino were making a college together of Tirumushi and Feline Noire for the TealBlog.

"And Nathaniel—"

"He likes to draw people in skinny suits~" Alix teased, interrupting Izuku then laughs when Izuku playfully threw one of Nathaniel's crumbled paper balls at her.

Nathaniel shook his head before looking over at Marc and smiling kindly, "Welcome, Marc. As you can tell, we're pretty much all friends here. This is the place were you can totally express yourself and we don't judge. We joke in all good fun too..."

"Especially when someone keeps making drawings of Tirumushi~" Adrien says in a sing-song voice, laughing when a red-faced Nathaniel punches his arm, "Ow! What~? It's true! You're the one that has the biggest crush on the bug hero!"

"Shut it, Agreste!" Nathaniel squeaked out with a pout, "Besides, Marinette's the one who's the president of the Tirumushi club!"

(Izuku quietly groans and places his hands over his face while they talked, especially when he hears Marinette squeaking and stuttering an explanation that she just sees Tirumushi as an inspiration, not as a crush and she didn't have an active imagination about him—)

"Yeah, yeah. I mean after all, Izuku was your bi-awakening first~"

Izuku groaned even louder at Adrien's words, not noticing that Marc wasn't listening and was instead drawn to Nathaniel's sketches.

But Chloe did.

"Wow," Marc murmured as their eyes scanned the pages, "I-I saw these drawings online but they're nothing compared to the real thing! The movements, the expressions, the attitudes~ They're all so..."

Nathaniel paused from straggling reprimanding Adrien and looked over at Marc's words, his face showing surprise before smiling softly, "Thanks. T-that's nice..."

Marc stared in awe for just a moment, before jumping back with nervousness.

"W-well it's true. I, um, I-I've never seen d-drawings so...so..."

"Yoohoo~ I've arrived everyone~"

Chloe instantly is at Izuku's side with a growl as Lila steps into the room.

Lila reads the room for a second before she smiles and introduces herself to Marc.

"You want to be a writer~? Ohh, did you know I was taught in calligraphy by a famous scholar from Japan~?"

Izuku tunes this out and turns back to Kagami, who looks like she wants to say something, but Izuku stops her.

Adrien tries to intervene by changing subject.

"Anyways! Marc, you'd be perfect to be Nath's writer for his comic on Tirumushi and Feline Noire—"

"Oh?" Lila interrupts with a sweet smile before scooting to Nathaniel with big eyes, "You're writing a comic about Tirumushi? Who better to help you with that than me~? Tirumushi's closest friend~?"

Nathaniel looks interested for a moment, but he still had a wry look, "For real?"

"Of course~ Perhaps I can even help you with any information you need about the superhero~"

Marc, feeling like they didn't belong in the conversation anymore, quietly leaves.

Chloe runs after them. She has an idea to get Lila off Nathaniel's case and get Marc instead.

And so, like in the Reverser Episode, Chloe is the one who plans the whole thing.

Adrien also joins in, even making a suggestion of leaving Marc's notebook for Nathaniel to find and erase Marc's name off of it.

"If he likes the story in the book, at least it would give you confidence to be Nath's writer, Marc~" - Adrien.

"And if he doesn't, we just won't say anything." - Chloe.

And so, the trio lay the trap.

Adrien is the one delivering the notebook to Nath (He thinks it wouldn't be believable if Chloe does it).

"Yo, Nath!"

Adrien slips the notebook to Nathaniel with a grin and a wink.

"Someone wanted to leave this to you. Read it, and get back to me later~"

Nathaniel raised a brow as he watched Adrien for a moment, before he looked down at the notebook and his eyes widened.

And...this is where things go south real quick.

Lila notices this and quickly goes to Nathaniel, already spinning a tale while talking sweetly as if they were best friends.

"You think the notebook is from...Tīrumushi?" Nathaniel would ask, while Lila nodded with a thoughtful hum.

"I was wondering where his diary went. He did tell me that he had lost it a week ago, he must've accidentally left it here in school. This is good~! If you give it back to him, then that means you'll get to meet him for real and you can ask if you can make a comic about him~ I'm sure he'd feel honored~"

Nathaniel takes this misunderstanding and gets excited.

Oblivious to what happened, Adrien sets up the meeting for the red head to meet the mystery writer of the notebook.

"The writer wants to meet you at the park after school~"

"...This isn't some sort of prank, is it, Adrien?"

"Trust me, the person who wrote this is dying to meet you~ You won't be disappoint~"

"T-this is a dream come true!"

After school, Izuku notices Adrien and Chloe hiding behind some bushes while Nathaniel was shyly walking towards the park with a notebook.

"What are you two up to?"

Adrien and Chloe jumped when Izuku appeared behind them, arms crossed and giving a stern look that both the blondes recognise he got from his mother. And an angry Inko Midoriya wasn't one that the two would ever want to see in life again.

"W-well, we were..." Chloe started, sweating a little before Adrien interrupted to save the day.

"We are setting up Nath and Marc to be the ultimate comic making team!" He explained while sweating, "Nothing nefarious whatsoever!"

"Uh-huh..." Izuku then looked up to see Nathaniel approaching the hooded figure sitting on the edge of the fountain in the park.

Why did he have a bad feeling in his stomach?

"...Tīrumushi?"

"Huh?"

Izuku felt himself facepalm while Adrien paled and Chloe cursed. Marc moved their hood to show their face. Nathaniel looked shocked, then looked towards the bush, the shock turning to anger.

Adrien gulped, "Oh shit, he looks pissed."

Nathaniel goes off like in canon, even when Izuku rushed over to calm the red head down, Marc already crying.

Nathaniel rips the notebook and leaves, Adrien trying to follow and explain everything.

And...Marc gets akumatized and becomes Reverser.

"THIS IS ALL YOUR FAULT CHLOE BOURGEOIS!"

Izuku pulls Chloe away and goes to hide, being chased after Reverser.

Once they are hidden, Reverser goes for their next target...Adrien Agreste.

Izuku needed to stop Marc, so he hid Chloe in the lockers with strings of apologies.

"I'll be back okay? I'm gonna get some help"

Once Chloe knew Izuku was gone, she transformed into Feline Noire and went to track down Reverser herself.

Transforming into Tirumushi, he tracked Reverser turning everyone into...well, opposites of themselves.

Reverser sees the Ladybug hero and smirks.

"REVERSION!"

And...instead of being a smart and quick superhero

"WAH!"

Tirumushi groans he tripped over his yo-yo when trying to swing his weapon to capture Reverser, and feeling even more frustrated when he tried again...only for his yo-yo to hit his head hard.

"HA HA HA! Looks like the bug is nothing but a pathetic klutz~" Reverser would mock, then smirked, "Now to find those rich brats that ruined my chances with Nathaniel!"

"Not so fast!"

Feline Noire appears in time, but it doesn't last long until she notices her partner entangled with his yo-yo.

"Partner?"

Boom. She gets hit by Reverser.

"Instead of a cool cat, why don't you become a crybaby instead~?"

Reverser leaves them to find Adrien, and Tirumishi feels a headache coming on.

There was no way he and Feline Noire could do this alone. Not in their condition at least.

The Ladybug wielder decided to make a call.

Meanwhile, Adrien and Nathaniel talk.

"B-but...Lila said...?"

Adrien let out a frustrated breath with a frown, "Nath, she doesn't know anything! If anything, I suggest you stop listening to her."

"...I guess I jumped the gun a bit, huh?" Nathaniel said sheepishly but then sighed, "I-I should've asked you and Chloe properly about who wrote it instead of assuming and getting my hopes up. I mean, I doubt that Tirumushi would actually want to meet me. O-Or write a diary and stupidly leave it lying around somewhere."

Adrien patted the red head's shoulder, "Nah, I guess I should've told you Marc was the one that wrote it and that they really wanted to work with you with the comic you were planning. Marc felt nervous that you wouldn't like his writing. They were inspired by you, Nath."

Nathaniel felt crummy with that, "Aw man..."

Suddenly, the two jumped when hearing a maniacal laugh and looked up to see Reverser, who was flying down and snatching Adrien up into the air, then flew away with the model.

"Adrien!"

Master Fu sighed when he found Tirumushi holding a passed out Feline Noire in his arms.

"...What happened with your partner?"

"She...kinda cried herself to sleep?"

Tirumushi had to try and comfort the crying cat girl in his arms while waiting for Master Fu to come.

Apparently she felt so guilty of being a bad partner and a bad person in general, and Tirumushi thought she was gonna confess who she was under the mask. (Okay, yeah, he was feeling his heart pound at the thought of FINALLY knowing who his partner was)

But she fell asleep, tired from all the crying.

"Damn it." He really thought he was gonna know her identity.

"Why is she so cute though when crying and pouting? There's definitely something wrong with me."

Master Fu suggested that he will go find a hero to help break the akuma's spell over Tirumushi and Feline Noire so the two could cleanse the akuma and bring everything back to normal.

And so...Tirumushi ended up hiding out in the Lourve with the sleeping Feline Noire in his arms...his mind screaming and hoping Master Fu was gonna end up finding a good candidate with a good Miraculous.

"Hello, young man."

Nathaniel stopped his running to chase after Reverser on his glider and taking Adrien to the Eiffel tower and looked to the source of the voice calling to him. The red head looked down to an old man in some sort of green ninja armoured costume and a conical shaped hat. The man smiled sagely as he held what seems to be a small jewellery box.

"Tirumushi has asked me to give this to you, for he and Feline Noire are in need of help to take down Reverser."

"Wha...?"

His stomach dropped for a moment when the box was pushed into his hands, and the artist looked at the box in awe. Something about this box seemed suspicious. Nathaniel wanted to say something, but when he looked back up, the strange old man was gone.

Frowning, Nathaniel opened the box and his eyes widened when a glowing light appeared before him. And...a floating fox appeared.

"Greetings my holder~ I am Trixx, and I'm your Kwami~!"

Nathaniel is soon given an explanation of who Trixx was and what to do; that he needed to be a hero alongside Tirumishi and Feline Noire for this particular mission.

Normally, Nathaniel would be jumping for joy in actually fighting alongside his heroes.

But he knew that he was the cause of today's events. It was his fault that Marc became Reverser.

"I don't deserve to be a hero, Trixx."

"Then don't you think being one and saving that person is the right to do and make up for your mistake?"

Trixx had a point.

Nathaniel placed the necklace on and transformed.

Thus, Rubis Renard was born. (French: Ruby Fox)

Rubis Renard managed to track where Tirumishi and Feline Noire were and introduced himself.

Tirumushi couldn't place who this fox was at first.

That was until the Fox revealed that he wanted to fix the mess that he made and it immediately clicked in his head.

Together, the three (somehow) managed to get to the Eiffel Tower where Reverser and Adrien were.

"YOU DRIVE LIKE A MANIAC!" "I-I was driving below the speed!"

Tirumushi had to hold his partner's hand while walking, being guided by the Fox Hero (and embarrassingly so, since the Ladybug Hero kept TRIPPING over air out of all things!).

"What should we do?" Rubis Renard asked as he looked over at the two heroes with a frown, "Considering that Reverser just reversion'd the Mayor into shooting garbage rockets from space down back to earth, we gotta think fast to stop him and save Adrien Agreste!"

Tirumushi summoned his Lucky Charm.

...which dropped onto his head before Rubis Renard caught it before it hit the ground.

"...A-a bamboo roll?"

Feline Noire whined and the waterworks were on again while shaking, "We're doooooomed! What a-are we s-supposed to do with those?!"

Tirumushi pursed his lips before turning to her and touched her cheek gently, "There, there, Neko-chan. Don't be scared. We can do this. Plus, Rubis Renard is here to help us too."

After she was reassured, Tirumushi looked around to figure out how to use his Lucky Charm. Seeing his vision laser focus on the Fox Hero along with his Lucky Charm, a cone, his yo-yo and Feline Noire's belt and the blanket she was carrying, he smiled.

"I think I have an idea. Renard, I think I'm gonna have to ask you make an llusion of Nathaniel Kurtzberg and Chloe Bourgeois."

Thus, Tirumushi uses the cone to call for Reverser. To exchange Adrien to them and reverse the Mayor back so he could stop the oncoming garbage in space from falling over Paris, and in return, Tirumushi will surrender his and Feline Noire's Miraculous along with Nathaniel and Chloe.

"What heartless heroes you are. Very well~ But only if Feline Noire accompanies Nathaniel and Chloe Bourgeois up to me~"

Tirumushi agrees.

As the "trio" entered the elevator and up to where Reverser was, it was soon revealed that a blindfolded Feline Noire rushed out of the elevator and jumps off while riding a kite made from her blanket and the bamboo sticks from the lucky charm.

Tirumishi reaches to grab the yo-yo string attached to it to steer the kite Feline Norie was attached to, and almost dropped it if not for Rubis Renard grabbing for it and guiding the kite instead.

Flying towards Reverser, Feline Noire Cataclysm'd the paper hoverboard, and Renard pulled at the kite, detaching the heroine from it while falling.

Working quickly, the Fox and Ladybug soon shouted "MIRACULOUS TIRUMISHI!" and managed to put things to normal.

Feline Noire blinked as she was back to normal self, even coolly using her bo-staff to extend and caught Marc from falling to their doom.

Getting his bearings, Tirumushi immediately captured the akuma and worked his magic.

"Bye, bye little butterfly~"

Tirumushi suggested for Feline Noire to take Marc home while he guided Rubis Renard home.

"Wait..."

Tirumushi looked over to Feline Noire, who looked upset for a moment, almost betrayed.

"Do you know this hero?" She asked, and Tirumushi sighed.

"Not exactly. The Guardian chose him to help us out today."

"The Guardian?"

"I will explain it another day, Feline," He walked up to her and took her hand gently, squeezing it with a determined look, "You will meet the Master one of these days with me, I promise."

"..."

Nodding, Feline Noire grabbed Marc and jumped off to take the writer home.

Tirumushi nodded his head to the side, signalling for the Fox to follow him and the two ended up hiding out in an alleyway. Once they made sure that they were alone and no one can see them, Rubis Renard closed his yes.

"Trixx, let's rest."

Nathaniel sighed as he took off the necklace and held it out to Tirumushi, looking at the hero in shame and embarrassment.

"T-Trixx told me that I should return them to you when the mission is done but...t-this wasn't how I wanted to meet you, Tirumushi..."

"Yeah, I sorta got the gist of the story from some civilians that was with you and that akuma victim," The Ladybug holder stated in seriousness, then softened as he looked to the red head, "But I do thank you for the help today. At least I know to find an ally should I need one again."

Nathaniel shook his head, "I'm not worthy of being a hero, Tirumushi. I mean, it was my fault in the first place that caused that akumatization towards Marc."

"I dunno, I mean with those drawings you made of me and Feline Noire, I am pretty sure you'd have a better understanding of heroes more than anyone I know," Tirumushi said with a smile, even looking sympathetic when Nathaniel looked mortified, "Hey, I'm totally in the know for online stuff, especailly the TealBlog~"

Either way, he assured Nathaniel that he was good enough, and that perhaps if there was a day he needed Rubis Renard again, Tirumushi was sure to find him.

And then...Nathaniel confessed.

"I...I really like you."

"...Didn't you like that other boy you kidnapped that one time as Evillustrator?"

Needless to say, Tirumushi had to let Nathaniel down gently.

"I'm a hero. I can't put anyone in danger, I'm sorry."

And Nathaniel understood, albeit heartbroken once again.

The next day, Izuku read Alya's blog of yesterday's events on his tablet.

It was then he noticed a new update.

A comic called "Miraculous: Tales of Tīrumushi & Feline Noire"

Smiling, he saw it was created by Nathaniel and Marc, and started to read.

Tikki peeked out for a moment to see as well, smiling, "Wow, you really have inspired people, Izuku!"

"Yeah..." Izuku chuckled as he kept on reading, then snorted when he saw the dedication to Adrien and Chloe, the two nosy blondes.

"All's well that ends well~" Izuku chirps as he kept on reading.

BONUS:

Izuku asks Master Fu why he chose Nathaniel for the Fox.

Master Fu explains that he saw Nathaniel as 'someone imaginative and quick on their feet, like a fox would be'

Izuku notifies Fu that he will tell Feline Noire about Fu being the guardian and that they have to meet.

Master Fu reluctantly agrees, but asks to give him some time.

"Speaking of choosing allies to work with you and Feline Noire, what do you think of that boy that loves to swim as a candidate?" Fu asks, tapping his chin, "He would be perfect for the Monkey..."

Izuku makes a face and then shakes his head, "Never, never, never!"

How do you keep it all running? You've inspired me to make my own deck based on a show I love, but how do you find these moments? Do you go in and analyze scenes from the show? Do they come to you in random thought? I just don't feel as organized or like it's coming together, so what's your process cause I get the feeling it would help me greatly.

OHHHHHH IVE BEEN WAITING FOR SOMEONE TO ASK ABOUT MY PROCESS ASSIGNING CARDS!!

First of all, that's so cool I've inspired you to make your own fandom deck! It's a really fun way to develop your artistic abilities and to analyze a piece of media, and I was definitely inspired by fandom decks that I've seen made by other people. Now for my ramble:

My process for assigning designs to all the cards took quite some time, and a great deal of thought. The first real "step" was to watch the show through like five times beforehand, which was easy because I had already done that by the time I decided to start this deck! It's important to have a good understanding of the characters, overall plot, and themes of the show to make sure your choices fit. It's also really helpful to take in analysis of these things from the fandom and not just yourself, because a lot of the time people will have identified themes or analyzed characters to a deeper extent or in ways you never would have thought to!

The next part of the process was learning the meanings of all the cards in a tarot deck. I was actually almost completely unfamiliar with tarot before starting this project, so this was a real from-the-ground-up scenario. The two websites I mainly refer to are Labyrinthos and Biddy Tarot, which both are based on the Rider-Waite-Smith tarot tradition--I didn't even know there were other types of decks before! Going through both of those websites, my first round of card assignments was based purely on my memory of the show, seeing what came to mind, if anything. There were a LOT of blank spots in my list at this point, especially in the minor arcana sections, and also a lot of initial choices that I would later change my mind about. Lots of ideas with question marks after them, and lots of cards that I listed multiple options for.

From there, it was a largely iterative process. I went back and forth watching the show and looking at the card definitions, building up my list over time, revising choices and adding ones where before I couldn't think of anything. Another resource that was really helpful at this stage was watching deck reviews/walkthroughs/deep dives on youtube. I'd especially like to shoutout Lisa Papez for her really thorough deep dives and for her Tarot for Beginners series--they gave me a much better understanding of the tarot, and a better sense of how and why to properly assign a character or scene to certain cards.

After a while, I had my list more or less complete, with at least one idea for each card. At this point I had already begun illustrating the major arcana, as those were the easiest to assign. Luckily for me, The Owl House really lends itself well to the tarot--The Fool, for example, was a no-brainer (as you might be able to tell from other TOH decks that exist out there). Now that I had a general game plan, I wanted to fine-tune my choices by taking into mind character balance and episode balance.

For character balance, I wanted to make sure that the amount of times a given character would be either the main focus or part of the focus of a given card would correlate to the size of their role in the show. Luz, of course, is the main character and features in every episode, so she is in nearly half the deck. Eda, King, Hunter, and the Hexsquad are also up there, with the rest of the cast trailing off from there. If I thought a certain character was either over- or under-represented, I would switch up certain cards or choose one option over another if I was considering multiple designs for a card. I was especially mindful that all the major characters would feature at least once in the major arcana, which led me to assigning the Chariot to Amity and Willow as a duo, and the Hanged Man to King. (The Chariot, if I may note, was one of the more difficult ones to assign in the majors. Not sure why, just not too many obvious choices came to me!)

Episode balance was a little trickier to nail down, as some episodes just have more significant moments than others do. Premiers and finales ended up with more cards than usual, as did the three season 3 specials. I tried to find at least one significant scene or character from each episode, but in the end there are four episodes that don't feature at all in this deck: Once Upon a Swap, Something Ventured Someone Framed, Really Small Problems, and Follies at the Coven Day Parade. Those are the decisions that come with the territory, though--I would rather have my card designs fit the definitions than potentially sacrificing a better choice for the sake of a less significant episode! In the end, I'm happy with the choices I've made, and I can't wait to get to all of them!

TLDR This is my general advice for designing your own fandom deck:

Familiarize yourself with the text. Analyze characters, plot points, and themes. Take inspiration from fandom analysis.

Familiarize yourself with the tarot. Consult multiple sources, and feel free to stretch the card definitions a bit if it makes sense to you (lookin' at you, two and three of wands).

Do a first pass-through from memory of the show, assigning designs as you go through the card definitions. Include multiple possibilities for those you're unsure about, or leave them blank for now.

Do a close-reading style watchthrough of the show, going through your unsure/blank cards after each episode to see if anything fits. If something better comes up for a card you were pretty sure about, add it as a possibility, or see if it could fit another card if you spin it a different way. Repeat this process until you've got a pretty full list.

Continue revising your list, keeping in mind character and episode balance. Are you under-representing your major characters? Over-representing more minor characters? Are you hitting most of the important scenes from the show/book/etc? Keeping these in mind will result in a well-rounded deck!

My final bit of advice: have fun with it! You can do whatever you want forever! There's a side character you're really fond of who appears more often than they should? Who cares! That one cool scene doesn't really fit any of the card definitions? Leave it out or make shit up! Maybe the design you choose really only fits the card's reversed definition and not the upright--that's perfectly fine! Assign that female character to one of the "male" court cards or vice versa! The tarot is not rigid; definitions are malleable and people's general understanding of the decks have shifted greatly over time. Every deck will have slightly different takes on what each of the cards mean, and yours will too. So go with what feels right!
