GROWING HERBS IN JARS
Tumblr media
If you have a glass jar and access to fresh water, you can grow a supply of herbs right on your windowsill! While any medium-sized container will do, Mason jars are particularly cute! You could also head to your local thrift store and stock up on a few decorative glasses for cheap.
The next step is to choose the right herb. Check out this list of 12 herbs you can grow in water. This hard-to-mess-up method is a great option for the busy bee who doesn’t have time (or the desire) to deal with soil.
1. Peppermint
Grow peppermint in a jar and snip off a bit to make herbal tea, oil or soup. You can also just enjoy the sweet scent of this fragrant herb. Peppermint does well in partially sunny or shady windows.
2. Oregano
You can use fresh oregano straight in pasta sauces, soups and other savory dishes. Just use a pair of kitchen scissors to gently remove a few leaves from the stem. Oregano can grow quite large, so keep an eye on your plant.
3. Sage
Sage has a flavorful scent which makes it a popular choice for holistic purposes. You can also use sage with eggs, chicken, lamb or pineapple. Snip as much as you need and add it to your favorite dish. Sage doesn’t need a ton of water and should be kept in moderate sunlight.
4. Basil
This popular Italian herb grows well in water and can be used in many different recipes including sauces and soups. Make sure your basil jar gets about 6 to 8 hours of sunlight per day.
5. Stevia
This hardy herb prefers a bit of sun but can grow just as well in shadier areas. You can use the leaves off of this herb to sweeten your tea of coffee naturally! You can also create a powder from the leaves to use as a sweetener.
6. Thyme
Thyme is a versatile herb. It will flower, and the flowers are edible. You can also harvest it before it flowers, hang the stems to dry the leaves and then remove the leaves to use in cooking. Thyme needs plenty of sunlight, so set those jars in a bright window.
7. Rosemary
This flavorful herb does well in sunlight or partially shaded areas. It will grow better in full sunlight though. Use your growings to spice up your favorite chicken dish!
8. Lemon balm
You can use the lemon balm herb to create an herbal tea that helps reduce anxiety, relieve symptoms of indigestion and helps make sleeping a little easier. Give this plant plenty of sunlight.
9. Chives
This onion family member is super easy to grow, and you can use it in a ton of dishes. Make sure this herb has plenty of water and sunlight for best growth results.
10. Cilantro
Cilantro prefers plenty of sunlight, though partial shade works okay too. Use this flavorful herb to add an extra punch to your salsa and other Mexican-inspired dishes.
11. Lavender
Lavender can be used to soothe depression symptoms, ease migraines and cramping and promote better sleep. Use lavender leaves to make a tea or an oil. Added bonus: lavender smells fantastic! This herb needs the sun and fresh air to thrive, according to Bonnie Plants.
12. Marjoram
This herb does really well indoors, though it grows best in full sunlight. This herb is a bit slower to grow, so you may need a little patience. Use this herb to spice chicken and beef dishes. Some people prefer to create an oil for lotions and bath soaps too.

Congrats to the ultimate winner of the Hot & Vintage Movie Men Tournament, Mr. Toshiro Mifune! May he live happily and well where the sun always shines, enjoying the glories of a battle hard fought.
Tumblr media
A loving farewell to all of our previous contestants, who are now banished to the shadow realm and all its dark joys and whispered horrors—I hear there's a picnic on the village green today. If you want to remember the fallen heroes, you can find them all beneath the cut.
What happens next? I'll be taking a break of two weeks to rest from this and prep for the Hot & Vintage Ladies Tournament. I'll still be around but only minimally, posting a few last odes to the hot men before transitioning into a little early ladies content, just like I did with this last tournament. The submission form for the Hot & Vintage Ladies tournament will remain up for one more week (closing February 21st), so get your submissions in for that asap! Once the form closes, there will be one more week of break. The first round of the Hot & Vintage Ladies Tournament will be posted on February 29th, as Leap Year Day seems like a fitting allusion to leaping into these ladies' arms.
Thanks for being here! Enjoy the two weeks off, and send me some great propaganda.

Note
Dear Neil Gaiman,
You may recall writing an introduction to an anthology of Edgar Allan Poe's short stories some years ago. In that introduction you suggest that Poe's writing is best enjoyed when it is read aloud. After reading some of his stories and poems aloud to myself, I realized that you had an excellent point.
During the month of October, I have made a habit of spending some extra time reading stories and poems by my favorite Gothic author. Instead of reading to myself or asking the nearest person to read to me;* do you have any suggestions for good audio versions of his written works?
Thank you in advance if you are able to answer this question!
*This request has never produced a positive result. In my experience after you reach "a certain age," people no longer wish to read to you.
You need a better group of friends. Ones that like reading aloud to you, anyway.
But until you find them I recommend this:

October 26th is Dimìtrovden/Mitrovden (Димитровден), or the Orthodox feast day of St. Demetrius of Thessaloniki. (Bulgarian: Свети Димитър Солунски) He is a 3rd-4th century Christian saint and great martyr (великомъченик) from the city of Thessaloniki in Greece, of which he is the patron saint.
Hagiographies refer to St. Demetrius as a young man of a senatorial family, who became proconsul and was tasked with persecuting Christians in the at the time still pagan Roman Empire. However, being himself Christian, he instead protected them, for which the emperor had him jailed. He was later speared to death as punishment for the defeat of the gladiator Lyaeus at the hands of Demetrius' disciple, Nestor. This marked the beginning of his veneration by Christians in the area, which grew in the following centuries, as he was said to guard the city against raiders.
Albeit not one originally, during the Middle Ages St. Demetrius came to be revered as a warrior saint, and iconography portrays him riding on a red horse, running a spear through various enemies — often Lyaeus, but also whoever was locally perceived as an enemy. In Greek icons, this is sometimes the Bulgarian tsar Kaloyan, while in Bulgarian ones — the Byzantine emperor Basil II The Bulgarslayer, or later on, a Turk. St. Demetrius is also associated with the founding of the Second Bulgarian Tsardom, specifically the uprising of the brothers Petăr and Asen, which broke out on Oct. 26th, 1185. The St. Demetrius church in Veliko Tărnovo (pictured above) was built in commemoration the event, and served as a coronation site of Asen dynasty tsars, who claimed him as their patron.
Traditionally, Dimitrovden marks the end of the seasonal transition from fall to winter, a period which begins on Oct. 14th with Petkovden. Bulgarian folk mythology casts the saints George and Demetrius in the role of twin brothers, whose respective holidays split the year into its warm and cold halves. The latter, elder of the two, ushers in the cold and darkness, as he rides in on his red horse and the winter's first snowflakes sprinkle down onto the earth from his beard. As St. George's opposite and counterpart, he takes on the qualities of a chthonic deity, and thus has connotations to death and the Beyond — under his patronage the so-called Dimitrovska Zadushnica takes place on the Saturday prior to Dimitrovden, one of several such holidays where food is given out in honor of deceased ancestors. Perhaps this is also why, in addition to St. George, folk imagination places him as a brother to Archangel Michael and nephew to St. Paraskeva/Petka.
Dimitrovden is the true end to the year's agrarian cycle — the harvest now over, it's time to put the farm tools away, make sure the animals have shelter and firewood is stocked up. It's also when farmhands and other labourers' contracts expire and they get rehired for the year ahead, which is why the day is also known as Razpust (Разпуст). As with other big holidays, a community-wide celebratory feast is held, and the customary ritual meal (or kurban) is mutton. The biggest ram is chosen, a pair of gold-painted apples are placed onto its horns and those present bow before it, after which it's slaughtered and cooked, and receives a priest's blessing before being served. Festivities are accompanied by music and horo (group dancing), which again has an intended matchmaking function. Namesakes of the saint celebrate the occasion, too — but they're traditionally served a chicken or rooster dish, according to gender. Other foods for Dimitrovden include corn, seasonal fruit and derived dishes, such as apple pita, pestil (a type of plum dessert), rachel (pumpkin syrup), etc.
Another activity which traditionally ends on Dimitrovden is construction work — a new house is supposed to have been completed by then, and the homeowners celebrate by throwing their own feast with a kurban, and inviting friends and relatives to witness the house being blessed by the master mason and the priest. The feast day has therefore been adopted as a career holiday of builders and masons.
The day's connection to the mysterious and otherworldly has inspired various beliefs and rituals of prognostic or divinatory nature, and anything from the weather and moon phases, to the behaviour of farm animals is observed carefully and used to make future predictions. Characteristic is the custom, known as polazvane (полазване), wherein members of the household make note of the first person to visit them, to physically cross the threshold into their home, and interpret them as a portent of things to come. Also, according to old treasure hunting legends, Dimitrovden is when "the sky opens" and buried gold emits a blue-ish flame just above ground.
Dimitrovden is part of the group of holidays, based around the idea of transition and liminality; between fall and winter, between the world of the living and of the dead. The Christian and pre-Christian symbolism intertwine, the martyr death of the saint mirrors the "death" of nature as the earth is covered in snow and daytime engulfed by darkness. And crucially — for a people whose perception of time follows nature's cycles — the coming of winter brings not only a period of calm and rest, but the promise of spring and renewal.

How to Use Herbs: Basil (Sweet Basil)
Hwello again! This time we shall be talking about how to use basil in different forms. If you want more information about basil, please click this link to get to my basil post: Basil Let's get started.
Tumblr media
Alchemist Formulas:
*Remember always try to see one part as a teaspoon before going into other measurements. Doing a smaller amount first and then trial and error is better than making too much and a mess.
Mars:
two parts red sandalwood
one part honeysuckle flowers
one part basil
one part ginger oil
one part juniper oil
Health
one part frankincense (Sun; vitality)
one part basil (Mars; energy)
one part cinnamon (Mercury; nervous system)
one part bay oil (Sun; health)
one part sandalwood oil (Moon; Inner Self)
Oils
Basil Essential Oil:
Ingredients
12 ounces olive oil
2 ounces basil, 1 packed cup
Remove basil leaves from stems.
Place olive oil in a pint sized mason jar.
Carefully stuff basil into mason jar and close the lid.
Store on a sunny windowsill for 1 day.
Use a funnel to strain oil and a spoon to smash last bits of oil out of leaves and discard the leaves.
Transfer oil to a decorative jar and refrigerate for up to 1 week.
Prosperity Oil:
1 part mint
1 part basil
1 part cinnamon
1 part pine
Carrier oil of your choice (olive oil, jojoba oil and etc)
Simply take a small mason jar and fill it a 1/4 of the way up with your chosen oil.
Add in your herbs while thinking of your intentions of prosperity and abundance and swirl the jar around clockwise.
Then add a little bit more of the oil before closing the lid.
Awakening Oil:
*This needs to crafted on a full moon
1/4 cup carrier oil
Mason jar
2 drops of basil oil
2 drops of thyme oil
Pour your carrier oil into the mason jar and then added the drops of thyme and basil
Swirl it gently in a clockwise direction so it will mix thoroughly. Say, "I awaken, I listen, I see. Enlightenment come to me. Awareness, mindfulness, clarity. Illumination come to me."
Anoint your temples on your head and pulse points with your oil before doing divination work.
Spells
Basil Growth Spell
Chop fresh basil into fine threads.
Warm honey gently over the stove. (A double boiler or bain-marie is recommended, as honey scorches easily.)
Add the basil to the honey and simmer.
Remove the basil-enhanced honey from the source of heat and murmur over it something like this: "Flies flocks to honey, Customers flock to me, Bears flock to honey, Business flocks to me, Ants flock to honey, Contracts flock to me."
Run a warm bath for yourself.
Rub the honey over your body, and then enter the bath.
Soak in the water for a while. When you emerge, before you drain the water, reserve some of the used bathwater.
Toss this on the grounds of your business.
Sex Worker’s Better Business Spell
Dress a lodestone , a magnetite rock, with essential oils of basil, bergamot, and lavender. (In theory, the lodestones' gender may be coordinated with the gender of the clientele you wish to draw.)
Sprinkle with magnetic sand and a pinch of ground cinnamon.
Carry or wear to charm up added business.
Exorcism Powder
Blend the following ingredients together and grind into a fine powder:
Dried basil
Frankincense
Rosemary
Rue
Yarrow
2. Blend this powder with arrowroot powder.
3. Sprinkle as needed.
Basil Cleansing Bath
Pour approximately one cup of boiling water over one heaped teaspoon of dried basil.
Allow this to stand until the water cools, creating a strong infusion.
Add this to your bath.
Financial Dreams (For Solutions)
Sprinkle either infused basil oil or essential oil of basil onto a lodestone, just before going to sleep.
Get into bed, turn out the lights and gently rub the scented lodestone in a sunwise direction on your forehead. (When you awake, your forehead will probably be dirty. Don’t panic; lodestone dust is lucky.)
Keep the lodestone near the bed, so that you can inhale the basil
Since two of these spells ask for lodestone, here is where you can get some and arrowroot powder. Lodestone , Arrowroot Powder
Kitchen Witch Recipe:
Wisdom Soup

Herbalism 101: Rosemary
EP. 1
Tumblr media
Rosemary has been used by humans for centuries. Dating all the way back to 220 A.D. in China, this herb has been used by hundreds of cultures for hundreds of different reasons. Some cultures believed it could strengthen a persons memory, others considered it to be a symbol of a loyal marriage.
Properties: memory, love, cleansing, protection
Uses in the Kitchen
There are endless possibilities when it comes to cooking with rosemary. It has a pine-y, earthy flavor that goes really well with gamy meat like lamb or earthy flavors like mushrooms. Another option is pairing with lemon or other citrus to break up the earthy flavor. Cooking will always go hand-in-hand with herbalism. So, when using rosemary in food, make sure to remember it's magic properties as well and use them to your advantage.
Uses in healing
Rosemary has a lot of medicinal benefits. For exterior use, it can be great in oils and salves. Things like dandruff, acne, and dry skin can benefit. Rosemary can be very good for indigestion, stomach cramps, and mental fatigue. Making a tea is my personal favorite way to consume rosemary.
Uses in Witchcraft
While it is often used as a filler herb in spells or recipes, it does have some unique properties. One of the longest standing uses for rosemary is memory. While burning rosemary is a great way to banish and cleanse your home, cooking with it with intention is my personal favorite use. This herb is also known to symbolize fidelity between lovers. To strengthen an existing bond, making a dish that has rosemary and other relating herbs (catnip, basil, cardamom, etc) is a great way to go.
Tips to Grow at Home
1. Grow rosemary by your doors as protection
2. Sandy soil is best
3. LOTS of Sun, not too much water
Rosemary Ointment
3 teaspoons dried rosemary
1 teaspoon dried thyme
2 teaspoons sage
1 cup oil
1/3-1/2 cup beeswax or other carrier oil
Start off by infusing the oil with all of the dry ingredients. I do this in a mason jar in a pot of water, but any sort of double boiler situation will work. This is where you can add an optional drop of peppermint oil. It takes about 30-45 minutes on low low heat to fully infuse. Once it's finished let it cools down before straining it. You should strain it pretty well. I don't mind if it's not super filtered, but if it'll bug you just use cheese cloth!
Next, melt the beeswax and add the infused oil. Stir if gently for at least a few minutes on low heat. Store in a jar or shallow tin and use when you have a head cold or need something healing for your skin!

Whats Omori Falls?
Tumblr media
Tbh idk either
Uhh that’s from the basil version (i explained it here). Ik you were prob asking ab the original (where dipper died,, I never really knew who was gonna cover up the death though) but I don't have anything from that since I scrapped it and I'm gonna scrap the basil version too, and restart the au entirely. I finished the art bc it looked cool ahahaha
Tumblr media
Anyways so. To revamp the au ( the only thing that's staying is that it's the omori plot with gf characters ) I'm basically going to be snipping all of the characters' existing relationships apart and restitching them together in different patterns because it was not working out with the characters as they are in gravity falls canon
So in this au, Wendy is now Wendy Pines, Dipper (or Mason's) big sister. Wendy is dating Robbie Valentino, who has a little sister- Mabel Valentino. Mabel and Dipper also have two other friends- Gideon Gleeful and Pacifica Northwest. Gideon is a bright but stubborn boy, who always gets into playful arguments with Mabel. He'd never admit it, but he secretly admires her. Pacifica is an inquisitive girl who stays with the local handyman, Soos, and his abuelita- They look after her while her parents go on business trips. She also owns a camera and loves to take pictures of the friend group and garden with Abuelita.
Tumblr media
The drawing above is a wip of a lineup for the au. I'll be working on a post-death lineup, too.
If it isn’t clear enough, Wendy is the one who dies!! Pacifica feels guilty for her death, Gideon takes his anger about Wendy’s death out on Pacifica, and Mabel is the one who tries to get the group back together.
