Actually I will say this in regards to Beard, Wembley, and James Tartt Sr
I think Beard After Hours really shows how much the tone of Ted Lasso is seen through framing lens of Ted himself. Even if Ted says the story wasn’t really about him, the thematic weight of the show is absolutely about Ted. And Beard After Hours may be a crazy hallucinatory version in its self, but it’s still basically our only glance into this world when it’s not actively being Ted’s World.
And i think it being Ted’s World is why at Wembley, we only see the implication of violence. It’s always been the undercurrent when Jamie tells people about his dad - that he pushed him to dominate, that he’s a dick - but in that locker room scene? Man. Despite the show avoiding using the word ‘abuse’, everything from the acting to the staging to the dialogue fucking SCREAMS the impending threat of immediate violence from the top of the scene onwards.
I don’t think I have ever seen anyone disagree on the reading of that scene. The way Jamie tells him ‘don’t talk to me like that’ — we all agree that that’s something he learned from Dr Sharon. We are all in agreement, after watching him punch his dad, that it was the first time he’s ever fought back. And we all believe it, that when James got up saying ‘you can have that one for free’ that the threat was immediate and very real.
But before it can reach that point it’s cut off. Beard pulls James away. It’s a tense, hard scene to watch, but the actual violence shown is very minimal.
And then we get to Beard After Hours, where James has followed Beard out of Ted’s world, and we see the actual violence that just as easily could’ve taken place, and likely has before, in a world where Ted Lasso was not the lens with which we viewed things.

Now he was a huge Denver Broncos fan, but we were all growing up smack dab in the middle of Chief's country, so he used to catch a lot of guff for it. But me? I told him it didn't affect the way I felt about him at all. I told him that I 'didn't care'. And I didn't. btw this might be me swinging a bat at a hornets nest but like. absolutely none of my disappointment from the tl finale comes from ship baiting or any relationships that didn’t happen (though to be clear, i think the tedbecca fake outs were meanspirited and served no narrative purpose - in noted contrast to the season's earlier jamiekeeley fakeouts, for example, which were explicitly there to demonstrate jamie's growth + maturity)
tedpendant is a really fun concept for me, and i LOVE the characterisation + thematic potential there!
but as someone who personally resonated with a lot of ted’s struggles, the idea that ted could leave richmond so… seamlessly, for lack of a better word, really doesn’t sit right with me. the thesis of the shows entire first season - assuming it can be said to have only one - was about how everyone needs the love and support of a community, whether that comes in the flavour of someone who hypes u tf up or someone who will relentlessly call u on ur shit (or, as happened quite frequently, both!).
rebecca, roy, jamie are the clearest examples as the characters with the most screentime: they were all deeply isolated and disconnected from the people around them, and that was making them miserable. the connections they made with the team, the vulnerability they finally allowed themselves to express (the ghost banishing ceremony comes to mind!), and them going on to want *more* out of their life are what made their arcs about *progression* rather than *regression*. without that clear theme of compassion + community inspiring positive growth in everyone who encounters it, there is, frankly, no season one.
my personal favourite scene from season one comes right after michelle walks away from ted, when they’ve agreed to get divorced. ted sits down on the bench looking gutted, and a little shell shocked - and beard sits down with him. hands him the drink, and they sit there together. silent, but together. to me, that scene is an implicit promise from the episode, to the audience: ‘it’ll be okay. it’s going to be hard, but ted isn’t alone, and his friends won’t leave him behind.’
it also makes it clear to the audience that ted isn’t the saintly-giver-of-grace who needs nothing in return, as one might assume on first brush, but rather that he’s Also struggling with his own shit (as is everyone, always, in real life!) and he has something he needs from the people around him too.
and looking at the text of s3, and the conclusion to his arc in the finale, i just don’t believe that he got it. he wasn’t just sad that he was leaving (which would be understandable!), he was completely closed off. unresponsive to the people around him reaching out, borderline confused as to why they were trying so hard!
(side note, while i completely respect the read of ted and trents last interaction being rather rude + ooc on ted’s part, i personally read a different motive into it. for me, it was more like… he didn’t understand where trents enthusiasm was coming from? like, he read that as trent being too invested in what other people think of him, and responded in a way that he hoped would emphasise that ted doesn’t *need* to laugh at everything trent wrote, bc trent Already Knows that he’s done something really cool and kickass, and he shouldn’t value anyone else’s reactions above that. basically, based on his demeanour in the episode, i genuinely don’t think it would’ve even occurred to him that trent was more invested in HIS reaction than he would’ve been with anyone else.)
again, looking purely at the text, the show had already established that ted has really strong depressive + avoidant tendencies, as well as panic attacks (largely triggered by his fear of not being ‘good enough’ in various roles, ie: a father). we saw one area he was able to calm HIMSELF abt these fears (worry for henry, which is a Hell of a choice considering the ending…), but in literally every other heightened moment, he had to rely on his support system to help him make the choices that he WANTED to make, rather than ones inspired by avoidance and fear (ie: confronting michelle abt jake, talking to his mum abt why she was visiting + his dads death).
and to be clear, this is a GOOD THING! we’re not supposed to go through life alone, no matter how bad OR well we’re doing. rebecca and keeleys friendship isn’t worth less for all the scenes where they’re both in good places. if anything, the opposite is true - it’s lovely that they both have someone who want to celebrate the achievements in their life!
and fuck it, we’re sure as hell not supposed to go through life with exactly one (1) person whom we expect to fulfill ALL of our emotional needs at all times either! like, im sure i don’t need to labour my point here, but tying everything to one (1) person in ur life doesn’t make u any less isolated than if u were going it completely alone, whether it’s a family member, a friend, or a partner. i won’t pretend to know the first thing abt what it’s like to be a parent, but i don’t think it’s unreasonable to say that no parent would be at their best if they had absolutely no support/camaraderie/general love provided to them from Anyone other than their child.
so when ted is SPECIFICALLY shown to be in a bad place, over and over again (did he come to terms w his fear to be close to henry overnight???????), and then removed from his community? of COURSE the audience is left feeling unsettled, and like the rug has been pulled out from under them. there was no time in this finale dedicated to how ted would still be in contact with anyone from richmond. no promises of visits, or phone calls - fuck, nothing about emails!! according to the text, we might as well assume this is a clean break (and the maybe-dream-sequence does Fuck All to assure us otherwise. if ted doesn’t go to beards wedding, what WOULD he go to????). and since the show has ALSO completely failed to give us even an IMPLICATION of who/what ted’s support system would be in kansas, there’s… a reasonable argument to be made that this is It for ted. that, after two seasons doing NOTHING but attesting otherwise, the audience is supposed to suddenly believe that ted can (and SHOULD!) pull himself up by his bootstraps, and cope entirely on his own.
that, to me, is a betrayal of the show’s premise. we were promised a show about how, no matter how dark things may get, none of the characters would be left to struggle alone. and then they ended the show with ted alone.
i don’t know. i guess if i had to give this post a tldr; if anyone has any gen fic/meta/Literally Anything in the pipeline, i would absolutely love to be tagged/directed towards it. i’ll be endeavouring to write something myself, as well, but it might take a while before i can return to my WIP, lol.

also. there is something about the TWO TIMES we actually see beard shed tears in the show....it's because he's thinking/talking about hurting ted. sure, we got mentions he'll cry during movies + we never actually saw him cry in beard after hours....and we saw him discreetly wipe tears away before but. a full fledged crying scene? with visible tears? mom city speech...aka talking about hurting ted....and so long farewell when beard was crying about leaving ted. okay.

"So you want us to leave our 2 cats outside just for this boy you're inviting over? Well... I don't know, George." George's mom sighed.
"Please, ma! I need this! I really wanna impress him, and he's allergic!"
"Oh, allergic you say? Well, I'll just go wander with them, okay hun?" She caves in, softly smiling.
"YES! Thanks mom, you're the best ever!" George's day is lit up, his mom taking the 2 cats outside, perfect timing as Melvin arrives.
"Hey George..." he says, seeming a little tense. "A-are your cats here? I really don't wanna--"
"They're outside, don't worry!" he smiles.
After about 30 minutes, George's storytelling turned into flirting. Melvin was secretly loving it. He was being praised and spoiled with kisses all over, his face completely red by now.
What George wanted was to make him feel so good he wouldn't be able to talk correctly. He needed confidence. Then... an idea came to mind.
"Hey, honey--" Melvin gasped quietly. Did he just call him that? "Have I told you about Flaming Ink and Polar Painter?"
Melvin giggles. Well, it was fun while it lasted. "Yes, multiple times, why?"
"I told you about how Flaming Ink has amazing charm, right?"
"U-uhm, yeah?"
"I gotta show you something, then."

"Alright, George, what's the surprise?" Melvin hums, covering his eyes.
"Oh, it's nothing... and I'm Flaming Ink, pretty stranger." Oh god, his voice was deeper. Melvin felt chills go up his spine.
"W-wow..." Melvin gulps. "Can I open my eyes now, uhm... Flaming Ink?"
"Of course."
Little did Flaming Ink know, Harold was watching them. Well, actually, Polar Painter was. "Bleh. He's being flirty." he huffs. "He has to make a move already, I think Melvin's getting cold."
Back to them, Flaming Ink smiled, Melvin's eyes widening because, oh my god, George was picking him up like a princess. "O-oh! Uhm, thank you for holding me, Flaming Ink!" he blushes. Flaming smiles.
"Always." He says. "I think you're the prettiest stranger I've ever had to rescue, stranger. What's your name?" he comments, still not putting Melvin down.
"Oh, my name's Melvin," he giggles, somehow being embarrassed by his name. "I-it's not a very pretty name, and I don't think I'm as pretty as you're making me out to be, dear hero."
"Nonsense! You're the most beautiful person I've ever seen!" Flaming Ink scoffs. "Say, you wanna know what I do with pretty things, Melvin?"
"What do you do with them?" he says, a bit nervous.
"I take them all for myself." he whispers in his ear, before picking him up, Polar getting out of the bush.
"H-hey!?" Melvin blushes, Flaming Ink running off to god knows where with him. He tries to wriggle out of his grasp but god is Flaming strong.
"HEY!!"
Flaming groans. Polar's always here to ruin his fun. "WHAT DO YOU WANT!? THIS ISN'T ABOUT YOU!"
"LET HIM GO!!" Polar runs faster, Flaming speeding up more.
"HE'S MINE! I GOT TO HIM FIRST, YOU'RE JUST JEALOUS!" Flaming yells back, turning in an unexpected place and managing to lose Polar.
Melvin's in awe. Why? Well, first of all, his speed was basically inhuman so of course Polar wouldn't be able to keep up well, secondly, the fact that he's doing all this for him. He might be a little evil, Melvin isn't sure yet, but Melvin kind of likes it, and third of all, that was amazing.
Flaming pants as they stay in an alleyway, to take a breather, but he's still holding Melvin tightly. "You can let me go now, you know?" Melvin hugs him, something new for Flaming Ink.
"Mmn... no," Flaming really doesn't want to let go, he's clingy and this boy is beautiful, so why should he let go? He could lose him. "You're so pretty..." Flaming whispers in his ear again and hugs him tighter, his voice kind of tired and raspy now, making Melvin even more flustered and tense.
"Y-your voice..." he squeaks. "It sounds different."
"Oh," Flaming says casually. "It gets like that when I'm tired. Do... you like it like this?"
"I guess you could say that?" Melvin laughs, but goes fully silent as Flaming stares at him, then Melvin realizes that he's still hugging him. "You can let go now."
"But there's someone trying to take you from me..." Flaming hisses. "We should hide."
"Oh, uh-" Melvin's already getting picked up again, Flaming back with his speed, running off toward the school. "FLAMING!?"
"Yeah?"
"The school's full at this hour!"
"No matter! We can just hide somewhere else, then! Any ideas?"
"Uhm, well--" Melvin can't finish his sentence as Flaming is tackled by Polar, Melvin rolling on the ground for a little bit, vision blurry for a couple seconds and glasses somehow perfectly fine.
"GOT YOU! Stop trying to kidnap people!" Polar says, before getting up and helping Melvin. Flaming's eyes widen as he thinks that Polar's trying to take the ginger away from him.
"P-Polar look behind you," Melvin advises, Flaming behind Polar, ready to punch him.
"H-huh? WH--" Polar is interrupted by a sharp punch to the face, his nose broken and bleeding. "WHAT THE HELL, MAN!?" Polar yells at Flaming, on the ground, Melvin in shock at how he managed to break Harold's nose in just one punch, and also that he's making people bleed over him.
"Leave," Flaming growls at him. "He's mine."
"I don't want him!" Polar huffs. "I want you to quit taking people against their will! Did he ever say yes to anything you did!?"
"Not verbally, but I just know that he wants this!" Flaming remarks, pushing Polar. "Now, do you want me to break some other bones, or are we clear?" he hisses.
"...Fine." Polar sighs, having to cave in. "But don't hurt anyone else."
"Mhm. I've only got my eyes on the prize, don't worry." he looks back at Melvin, who's slightly trembling in fear for Harold's health and also because he's realizing that, hey, I did just get kidnapped, didn't I?
Polar knew he was lying when he said he wouldn't come back with help. But for now... he'd let Flaming have his fun.
As Polar left, Flaming stuck out his hand for Melvin to hold, wiping the blood off his glove. "You wanna go to that treehouse over there?"
"Uhm... okay!"
