WIP Monday??

I do believe @persephotea tagged me for a WIP day and I didn't have anything so... now here we are. When I actually have something. Very rough, mostly me trying to get some thoughts down of a scene I've had on my mind for a while!

The kitchen chairs had been pushed over, yellow and blue paint chipping in flakes, and pillows were strewn across the ground fluff bulging out of the places they were ripped, but Amelia was nowhere near done with her rampage. She wrapped her pudgy little hands around the crystal glass vase her mama had always kept flowers in, the petals wilted and the water gross with mold, and aimed it at the window.

Beatrice grabbed her wrist, frantic, “Amelia- sweetie- it’s not good to throw things, sweetheart- your brother will wake-” 

What did she care about him?! He was the reason her mom was dead! It was his fault!

She ripped out of the older woman’s hold and howled in her face, “YOU’RE NOT MY MOM. YOU CAN’T TELL ME WHAT TO DO!” She smashed the vase against the ground, unaware that she should move out of the way of the shards of glass. The debris shot past her and cut her soft cheeks and faded blue jumpsuit legs.

Beatrice screamed and jumped back, stumbling into the fallen furniture, and the baby started crying in her bedroom. 

Her cheek stung and she touched her cheek and stared dumbfounded at the smear of crimson on her fingers. Why did it hurt so much?

“What on EARTH is going on in here?” Daddy was suddenly in the doorway, red in the face, with Amata hiding scared behind him.

Beatrice scrambled and practically threw herself at James, “I-I don’t know what’s wrong with her! One minute she was fine and the next she-she was wrecking the place! I tried to stop her Dr. Lockhart but-”

She stomped her foot, “Th-th-thats n-not t-true-” Amelia was hiccupping through her words while big fat tears rolled down her cheeks. She was wailing now just like that dumb baby. And they weren’t even listening to her. Why weren’t they listening to her?

Amata quietly stepped through the grownups and grabbed Amelia’s hand, “C’mon… the glass is dangerous.” Amelia could only nod dumbly as she rubbed at her eyes. She sat them down on the couch and wrapped her arms around Amelia.

James half-heartedly tried to calm Beatrice while he navigated through the fallout of Amelia’s rampage. He pointed emphatically to Amelia making her flinch, “We’ll talk about your behavior later young lady. Thank you, Beatrice. I’ll take it from here.”

“Thank you, Dr. Lockhart. I’m so sorry you have to deal with this. I know it must be hard raising such an unruly young girl after-”

“Good day, Beatrice.”

To me, this is a compelling, brilliant scene. It's the turning point for both Lemony's character arc and the story.

Here, Lemony realizes that Hangfire is most certainly Armstrong Feint in disguise. This confronts him and us readers that the story is bound to end in tragedy. Until now, there was the possibility of a happy ending if the good guys only managed to defeat the bad guys. But Lemony was set up for failure from the beginning. No matter what he does next, there won't be a happy ending. The best thing he still can hope to achieve is to save the town and its children from Hangfire, but there will be no way to spare Ellington her suffering.

On a storytelling level, this marks the passing from a children's mystery series to a full-on, unapologetic tragedy. On a character level, this might be a key moment to understand Lemony and his entire generation of volunteer children, such as Kit, Dewey, Olaf, Beatrice, etc.

These children were kidnapped by VFD at a very young age. Many of them were also orphaned. They were isolated from people they knew and trained rigorously since day one. They had it drilled into them that their basic needs and emotions didn't matter and that they only existed to serve the greater good. In return, they got a notion of nobility: They were an aristocracy because their skills and sacrifices made them morally and intellectually superior to regular people. Being stripped of everything they had, these kids clung to those dreams of greatness.

But as they got older, they realized that their elders at VFD didn't live up to their own promises. They were incompetent, callous, and caught up in internal conflicts. So at the beginning of ATWQ, Lemony and his friends seemed to have come up with another notion to fix their emotional crisis. VFD may not be as great as it should be, but they would make it so. They would be overcome the older generation and save the organization and the world from evil. They were going to be heroes. Everything they had gone through would be worthwhile.

But here, Lemony is confronted with the horrible truth that destroys the coping mechanism he's relied on for so long. So now he has to choose to either accept that and be honest about his suspicion or go into complete denial. He chooses the latter. Up until the very last moment, he clings to the illusion that Armstrong may be innocent after all, that he may still save the day. He tries to solve the problem by killing Hangfire, thus going against the very principles that he's been preaching. At the end of ATWQ, he's just traumatized, running away mindlessly and living on the streets.

I think the other volunteers from his generation have to face similar disillusionments. As the schism worsens, some leave or turn against VFD, such as Olivia and Ernest. Others fight teeth and claws to recreate this quiet world utopia they have been raised to believe in. They resort to increasingly violent tactics that only worsen things, like the Volatile Fungus Deportation, the burning of Anwhistle Aquatics, or the murder at the opera. And so they die before their time, by each others' hands or their own poor decisions. They end up as just another failed generation that leaves their children a pile of debris and unanswered question, but also the hope to do better.

About medals and Charles's family order

Hello CC! Hope everything is good!

Harry has worn his medal twice since the coronation and he hasn’t worn the 👑 medal. I don’t remember if you read at the time whether the medal was given to him or not. I know that the medals weren’t ready on May 6th so he couldn’t be given one thay day, but it’s been a year and in some way if the King wanted him to have it, a way to get it to Harry would have been found. Plus Harry has been to Uk at least 2 since then.

Would you be interested in reading about it? Has Charles decided not to give him the medal even though he attended the ceremony? If so, why? Or it’s just that he wanted to give him personally and hadn’t had the chance since Harry does the flight in and out UK so quickly?

Another thing that has me wondering is why Charles still hasn’t got his order ready….I mean he had years to think about it and it’s been almost 2 years since his accession…..I don’t think it would take that much time to design and create the numbers for all the ladies that already have his mother’s. Like Fred, the Danish king, has already one. It’s kinda weird

What’s your take? I really thought they would let Camilla debut it alone with either a portrait of her in white-tie attire or at the Parliament opening since Catherine or Anne wouldn’t be present. Hope this Japan state visit in June will finally reveal it.

It is very interesting that Harry has not worn the Coronation medal with his other medals since the coronation. I would definitely like to read on that and see what is up.

With King Charles’s family order, it may appear at the State Banquet for Japan, or they may still be in production. I’m not sure how many royal ladies get them, but we have Camilla, Catherine, Charlotte, Meghan, Lili, Beatrice, Eugenie, Sophie, Louise, Anne, Savannah, Isla, Zara, Mia, Lena, Margarita Armstrong-Jones, Sarah Chatto, and then all the cousins and their wives and daughters and granddaughters. That is a lot of royal ladies (I am not sure if the children get the family order or not - I would hope they do as otherwise King Charles may be gone by the time they are adults and then they would not have a family order from their grandfather). Depending on which ones the King wants to honour with his family order, that is a lot of orders to prepare.

There could also be issues around the manufacture of the Family Order itself. They used to be painted on ivory, but Princess Catherine has hers made of glass because of Prince William’s stance against poaching, and King Charles may continue that. I know that Princess Catherine’s order took longer to make because it was made of glass, so maybe that is a factor as well.

Then, of course, The King could be delaying the release because he has certain female members of his family that he does not wish to wear his family order, and he does not want to face the media sulks they would put out about being excluded. without having news to drown it out.

We will have to see what happens at the State Banquet for Japan.

What happened to the statue of The Bombinating Beast? - Part 2: Post-ASOUE

In order to understand this post, it's important to understand the Verifiable Former Discussion on the subject: (https://www.tumblr.com/unfortunatetheorist/758787979321950208/what-happened-to-the-statue-of-the-bombinating?source=share)

At the end of Part 1, we come to the ultimate conclusion that the statue of The Bombinating Beast ends up on the island, by the time the events of ASOUE are over.

We know that Lemony is narrating this story in the present, and that ASOUE occurred in the past. From this - in addition to the information in TBL - we know that Lemony went to the island after the events, and stayed long enough to gather fragments of what once belonged to the Baudelaires.

I think that it is not guaranteed, but entirely possible, that Lemony discovered the statue on the island. He is then direly haunted of his tragic past, and his usage of it to kill Hangfire/Armstrong Feint.

Then, Lemony makes the ultimate decision, and he is the only one on the island, so he can.

Everyone is free by the time Lemony meets Beatrice II at Old Ed's Soda Shop:

• Lemony is free from the authorities, else he would have told Beatrice to be quiet when referring to him as "Mr Snicket"... unless he poses as Jacques... (again...)

• The Baudelaires are not free, but safe, in the same way Lemony was when he was on the lam.

• Beatrice II is free (well, as far as we know) from the banking authorities; no-one is trying to force her to be with a guardian, as Mr Poe was with the Baudelaires.

• The volunteers and villains alike from the Hotel Denouement are (presumably) free from life itself.

• Ink and the other animals are free from being used by either side of the V.F.D. schism. Apart from, perhaps, the eagles when one assumes The Sinister Duo to be alive.

(• Even The Daily Punctilio is free from corruption, as Eleanora Poe has been jailed and the paper discontinued.)

The only thing that isn't free is The Bombinating Beast.

I think Lemony decides to change that - he irreversibly breaks the statue on the island, setting the animal free, and leaving the submarine to perish, just as so many other people, animals and objects have done in this miserably lonely universe.
