My own garden is definitely the most triste it can be right now! We had two substantial frosts within a few days here in Austin and almost everything that had been a nice green color is now a sad, depressive brown. My roses had still so many buds, all frozen off. I know it is the course of nature and it needs to happen but it still makes me feel a little melancholic. Especially since we don’t have a beautiful, pristine, white blanket of snow like many of you that covers everything up and makes the winter pretty and more bearable. So I thought I would post a rose against the winter blues! I am pretty sure that this one is a rugosa rose, most likely ‘Terese Bugnet’, that you don’t see that often here on Instagram. Maybe her sight cheers you up as it does me. Today is “Blue Monday”, they said. It’s supposedly the “saddest day” of the year. It’s not real. If only we have one really depressing day and be over it at the beginning of the year—wouldn’t that be grand?⠀ .⠀ .⠀ SAD—or Seasonal Affective Disorder—is real, on the other hand. For a lot of people, winter is a really hard time for emotional and mental health. January and February are particularly difficult due to lack of sunlight.⠀ .⠀ .⠀ Having spent more than half my life in North America now, I’ve become used to it. Doing something creative helps beat the blues, and so does meeting up with friends and seeing family. Sure, some “self care” bubble baths and spa time are useful, too. A GUIDE TO GEAR, TRAILS AND YOUR HAPPY PLACE

Here at Health Nut, we wanted to do our part  by bringing you something light-hearted.  We teamed up with Campus Rec’s Outdoor Equipment Rental Program to give you some ideas on how to take advantage of these snowy days, opt outside and help keep your own mind healthy this winter.  Plus it’s cheap entertainment - always nice to save those dollars.

This program is such a cool resource for students. They offer super nice, name brand equipment for students to rent at a very low cost.  The equipment is even available at a discounted price for non-students, so you can bring your mom or your non-studious friends.

 Once you have your equipment and your adventure awaits, you might want to know about all the dope trials in the area.  We’ve got that covered too.  Here are some of the most popular trails around the zoo according to activity. Click on the “map” link to get directions from campus! And if you ever have any questions, the crew over at Campus Rec Outdoor Program has all the knowledge.
