pleeease keep talking about toys...i think this is interesting and smth i've never thought too hard about but it makes sense and i like to hear your opinions on modern toys

holy shit okay !! i would love to ramble on so, i shall!

okay im no expert on toy sales history, this is all just observation from my life experiences and i'll try to keep each part i want to go over relatively short!

that being said lets start with a small one that i've personally noticed as a canadian: Kinder egg toys! i remember when they used to come with like 4-8+ pieces, and you needed the included step by step manual to assemble them. they would often come with sticker sheets to decorate them with, and they would often be articulated or be set on wheels or have some sort of fun or movement or general functionality to them:

dont those look awesome? wrapped in 2 kinds of chocolate, and for only like 2$! i remember they would come in all shapes and sizes, all sorts of animals and vehicles and sometimes freaky little abominations, as you can see above, and sometimes even puzzles! they were such a special treat as a kid.

but kinder eggs now? come with a maximum of like 3 pieces that just snap together (usually the front and back of the toy, and then the platform they stand on). and thats all they mostly are now, stiff toys that stand on platforms wahhooooo yippeee

idk just look at the quality difference from the old ones above compared to some of the new ones:

like..... these are..... nothing! literally nothing. just a figure snapped to a pole/platform and thats it! not very interesting for more than 3 minutes max.

now i know what you're thinking: "not ALL of the old kinder toys had to have been bangers" and you'd be right, some were lame as hell, but even the lame ones from before look more intricate than the ones we have now, like can you see what i mean, just detail-wise?

it just feels so cheap and shitty, i could go on and on but more is explained later. point is, it sucks.

anyway that's a very small example and we can move onto bigger and better ones, and maybe even one that everyone else might have noticed by now; McDonald's toys! remember when they were actually toys?

and not just stiff figurines?

(the minions franchise was like CRACK for companies who love making profit off of nothing but stiff rounded plastic. probably the cheapest form of "toy" i can think of)

and yeah, again, its not like there werent figurines back in the day too, there's ALWAYS been lame as hell mcdonalds toys, but looking among many modern mcdonalds toys, you dont see anything as cool as the old ones. literally every major modern movie/franchise right now is nothing but figurines. the most recent actually interactive mcd's toy ive seen is when they collabed with hasbro games

again, companies just seem to be pumping out quantities over quality.

but why?

well, for starters toys are becoming cheaper (both in price and quality) because prices have sky rocketed and stores are forced to only stock cheaper things, therefore the cheap things sell the most, and then more of them get made, and statistics get fucked, etc etc the cycle repeats.

but toy companies know one thing, and that's that things that are "cuter" always sell more. "cuter" being used with vitriol because their idea of 'cute' is 'more glitter and sparkles and rainbow colours and obnoxiousness' oh, and dont forget the huge soulless bug eyes on all of them!

i know that people love these things, but theyre so..... uncanny. their stare is piercing, their stance is so stiff, i always felt bad actually playing with the only one of these i had growing up, and not just because it freaked me out, it just genuinely didnt feel good to play with.

and i knoowwwww people are obsessed with these things, but come on, you have to admit theyre SO unoriginal! theyre just cookie cutter shapes!

these things are horrifying and, at best, belong on a shelf.

these "beany boos" are so woobified and almost feel like a flanderized version of a stuffed animal, and they've completely taken over "beanie babies", which were wonderful soft little things that actually had movement and weren't stiff to cuddle! I also feel like they're almost trying to copy what webkinz was, in a way, as some of those were stiff too (but still loveable and not burdened with an uncanny, vacant stare)

anyway this is getting insanely long and im sorry but i feel like im going insane every time i see new toys nowadays. the like.... "cuteification" of everything is driving me insane, and the fact that they are simply just lower quality than what we used to get, because of prices rising and causing easy-to-make things to become more and more popular.

examples to further prove these points:

extreme woobifying or "cuteification" by almost completely removing all horse anatomy in favour of thin limbs, heavy makeup eyes that are now on the front of her face, and modern influencer eyebrows. on a horse.

and the extreme-simplifying of toys can be seen quite well on those mini polly pocket sets!! see this one here?

almost allllll of those little plastic things could be rotated or rearranged or moved or fucked with in some manner, it was awesome. i loved these miniature houses they always came with so much shit. wanna guess what the newer ones look like?

you guessed it, like shit!!

man even beyblades used to come with like, all sorts of different pieces both metal and plastic alike, and you had to assemble them yourself and you could interchange pieces to obtain a different weight which would affect your attacks against other beyblades, etc etc:

and looking at them now? they seem to be mostly made of- yep, you guessed it, hard cheap plastic.

anyway holy shit i literally reached the 30 image limit on a single post tumblr really said thats ENOUGH !! i cant believe i just spent that long talking about the worlds most pointless thing but at any rate i hope you enjoyed it and i hope you see my vision. because like i said im not insanely knowledgeable on any of this in particular, but its hard not to notice the decline in quality of all of todays modern toys.

I just drove home while listening to my tomarry playlist and i need to tell you, i love themb so much and this song (Carnivore by Bear Attack! If the link doesnt work) is such a themb song and omg. But also, i was thinking about this fic thats currently sitting partially done in my google docs, thats endgame tomarry but currently drarry. And basic context: Harry becomes the DADA prof after a few years of being a failure of an auror and he and Ginny just finalized their divorce (nothing was Wrong Per Se, Ginny just realised shes a lesbian), and Hermione sets him up with Draco but theyre not really Great together theyre more just meh as a couple, but then Harry accidentally time travels back to 1945 (give ir take a few years) and teaches DADA during Tom's seventh year, and they get together and Harry knits Tom a Weasley sweater and etc etc etc BUT i couldnt figure out how to get them both back to The Present Day while not breaking up Harry and Draco BUT BUT BUT i realized i can just make it hella poly and itd still be cute!

Im telling you all of this as the person who got me into tomarry plus the first person i thought of when i put this playlist on, i hope this hinged-ness finds you well i love you <3

Love the idea of introducing someone else to the Tomarry relationship because we've all seen Tom and how he feels about sharing. Like I feel like any work with Tomarry + another character is like, 40% getting Tomarry together (all the Hurdles and Problems and such with those two) and then 60% Harry slowly making Tom stop hissing at whoever else because he has to share Harry with them and that's his soulmate. Yes even if he likes them too he's just Like That. He's so very not suited to polyamory, it would be extremely entertaining reading a fic trying to make it work.

I remember reading a fic back in Ye Olden Days that was a Drarry snippet with Severus looking in from the outside wishing he could be with Harry but Knowing Deep in his Soul that he was Wrong for him. I'd link it but I'm like 90% sure it was in french and I don't want to go looking through FFnet for it right now haha. Drarry just made me think of it. Oh and there was One good Drarry fic I loved, still in french, by and author who wrote banger after banger (all in french, yeah) on FFnet that introduced baby me to Supermassive Black Hole and the fact that you don't put two condoms on. It's Nothing Else Matters by Rose Malefoy if you want to look at the page and not understand the text haha (yes Malefoy with an e that's how it's spelt in french) Oh and my first Snarry was amnesiac Harry who was with Severus and forgets it so he gets into a relationship with Draco but then remembers and leaves him I think? It's been a while. I used to be into Drarry more but it's been years since I read some, since I discovered Snarry and all.

I think we should combine our poly Tomarry AUs to inflict the maximum amount of Situations on theses guys. Like throw in Draco throw in Severus and then let them take years and a lot of therapy to disentangle that mess and make a working polycule out of it. A bit like when you plop Sims in a house with full autonomy and wait for them to do something cool like starving themselves or making out with their brother's wife, except here I hope they'd figure it out and get a good ending at some point. Anyway.

Oh and in Tomarry news if you haven't tackled Draw me after you (let us run) by Toastranger you should go for it because now after about 200k words and 44 chapters Things have been Happening 👀 (I'm not subtle, they finally kissed is what happened) extremely fun fic, highly recommend once again. That said it is a time investment because I love long works

you should cap at eight regular members (at most, honestly sticking to five or six is better), but you can have an expanded cast that could still work really well if you only focus on them a bit in one-offs and in background info. big team books can work, but they can't do everything all at once. otherwise it's not going to make any damn sense.

- the flight toggle on the right side of the screen. “Glide mode” makes you move forward when you flap. “Hover mode” makes you move up when you flap.

- your skykid automatically jumps on higher surfaces if you jump near them! When I first played I found so much trouble with this concept for some reason so Im saying it here widjdj

On the “main task” of the game:

- be brave, follow the light!

- find as many spirits as you can. Theyll give you emotes that you can use to express yourself! Finding more spirits also means you can go through certain barriers found in some maps.

- speaking of which, dont be afraid to backtrack! You may find new areas to reach, more spirits, etc

- find as many glowy children as you can. More flapping power, lets you reach more places!

Technical aspects — On candles/cosmetics/hearts:

- the main “currency” of the game, as the game itself says. There are specific spots in the maps that respawn “wax orbs” every day, after a reset time (Im not sure what the reset time is in global terms, forgive me). Most veterans go around on “candle runs” daily to get as much candles as they can!

This point we know where all the wax spots are. Dont be afraid to tail skykids on these runs, or reach out for help!

- on that note, save those candles, as much as you can. Every other Thursday, a “travelling spirit” arrives. These spirits are from previous events called seasons, and the cosmetics they carry/emotes they teach are only available to get in the three days theyre staying in the game!

- every reset gives us a maximum of 20 candles on a full candle run. Personally, I only run two realms a day — the gate where the quest guide stands by, and the gate where there are red candles by them.

- this is because of the newly introduced chevron system. Have you noticed the chevrons by the candle icon, and, how you begin with those three arrows at the beginning, and the chevrons slowly count down?

Its a little hard to explain, but basically, when you have those 3 chevrons, you can “forge” candles faster. It goes down bc your skykid, acc to the game, becomes “tired”, and as you continue to collect wax, the rate of forging gets slower and slower.

From my experience, running only two realms gets me more or less half the maximum amt (abt 10 candles)

- you can spend these candles on the base constellations, accessed at the end of each realm, or at homespace. Each spirit you find will give you cosmetics to customize your skykid, given that you exchange them with candles.

- youll see a percentage in each constellation. This percentage appears when youve found every spirit in the realm (I think). It rises when you unlock more and more cosmetics! Its worth going for that 100%, trust me 👀

- you can also use these candles to make friends! You can offer them to a stranger youve lit up if you wish💜 chat is available after you unlock more nodes in the friendship tree — or you can find a bench to chat with them!

- hearts you get from spirits or friends! Its three candles a heart, and hearts are also needed to unlock the cosmetics tree of each spirit!

On seasons:

ah, you arrived in the near beginning of Season of Assembly at this time of posting!

- long events like this happen every few months. This one lasts 70 days! To progress on the season’s events, you have to go through all the maps first (excluding the very last, I think. Big honkin door in Homespace). Once done, the questgiver/questguide should appear by the gate, and the game will introduce you to the event (if it hasnt already — I dont remember how they activate for new players!)

- you dont have to do the daily quests, by the way! Its not really a requirement. You see them when you stand at a certain distance from the questgiver and tap on the “!” Icon on top of their head. Again, if you need help on those, dont be afraid to ask!

- seasonal quests is the bigger story behind the season. Those can be accessed by standing nearer to the quest guide and tapping the symbol over their head. The game explains the rest fairly well💖

- the candles you get from daily quests are called seasonal candles. They are used to get the seasonal cosmetics that are available to purchase within the 70 days of the season!

*an in-app-purchase (season pass) is required to access all the cosmetics on the seasonal constellation, by the way!

Theres no character select or creation, which is fine this is supposed to be yu and kays story not you and your partner as player 1 and player 2 but it really feels like just saying hey are your yu and kay a man and a woman? Two men? Two women? Nonbinary? Really could have solved everything i mean its not like yu and kay are gendered names, and even their models dont need that many adjustments if any. what's your favorite headcanon and what's your least favorite headcanon?

OKAY so i have two for favorite bc one of them i think technically counts as a theory bc it COULD reasonably be canon and the other one is just a hc of mine BUT

fav hc: italian is kind of a comfort language for the whole OG squad. not bc of any particular history or talent with it for most of them, but bc italian is nicky’s best language BY FAR (including english) and nicky is also somewhat slow at learning new languages-- at least in comparison to the others.
