These aren’t inspiring words, but the words that came out of my mouth after being yelled at for 2 days by an agitated patient who the doctor decided to discharge at 7:10 pm last night aka change of shift. No expectation was set by the doctor that it would take at least an hour to get the paperwork, medication, and coordination complete. The night shift nurse had to finish report and check in on her patients. I had to complete some late tasks that I didn’t want to leave for the next shift plus the night shift nurse realized she had never done a discharge. After running around to finish up all of the things I sat down to print out the paperwork. The patient had come out numerous times screaming at all of the staff. I walked away and I said I’ll deal with it when I’m done. But now he had reached a boiling point and was at a full screaming voice, hitting his fists on the counter and screaming about how bad his experience was. That’s when I could no longer ignore his antics. Long story long as I was printing out the discharge paperwork I turned around and said, “Ok. Give me one second. I am working on the paperwork and will bring it to you shortly.” He continues to scream and I said, “Either you are going to wait or you’re going to wait.” And he looked at me and walked back to his room as the clerk called security. Last night I missed my DMV nurses. They handled these types of patients with firmness and clarity to avoid such incidents occurring in open areas. So I had to channel my inner Baltimore because I was over it. The joys of nursing. It’s still a pandemic. I truly believe in the saying “time is money.” I think the amount of focus we put on convenience and instant-gratification in our society is directly connected to how much waste we produce... if we all just slowed down, lived more purposefully and consciously, and spent our time constructively. We could improve some of our bad habits while also saving ourselves money. For example, food waste... The average American household throws away $2,200 of food each year. 20% of food that the average American buys is never eaten. Americans throw away approximately $165 billion of food each year. (facts via @theswagusa) So, I challenge you all to take a little TIME to simply go through your pantry and/or fridge. Take inventory of what you have already - consolidate, label, organize, (compost/clean/reuse/recycle the things that may actually have expired - to clear space for the still edible and useful), and start planning some new and exciting meals with the food you already have! It will feel sooo rewarding and inspiring, I can guarantee it.
