This one is a super fascinating topic that will have you thinking about the ways your animals communicate with you and within their own species. Do animals demonstrate verbal behavior similar to what people do? Is it language? If not, how is it different? This was quite an interesting rabbit hole of history to explore. Today’s Topic: Learning “Lightbulb” Moments of 2021 We often discuss the moment when an animal seems to “suddenly” emit the desired response. When we observe the animal, it looks like everything we have implemented seems to merge and a fully formed behavior appears. We might describe this as an “Aha” moment or a “Lightbulb” moment. In one of our 44 livestreams this year we discussed the learning processes that might be at work in such a moment. Yes! Even a “lightbulb” moment has behavior science behind it. What other interesting things did you learn from our livestreams in 2021? Join me for a look back at some of the learning lightbulbs moments of this past year. We had a lot! Today’s topic: Stimulus Preference Assessment – Tools to help identify potential reinforcers. Sometimes we think we have an idea of what our animals seem to prefer, but did you know there are some tips and tricks to help us be a bit more systematic about the process? And if we are not careful, we can also be doing things that may be influencing our animal’s selections thus putting some bias in our assessments. In today’s livestream we will explore some ways you can facilitate identifying potential reinforcers, ways to avoid pitfalls, and how preference assessments can be beneficial to your training. Today’s topic: Animal Trainer Self-Awareness – Hidden Ways Trainers May Be Influencing Animal Behavior. Often it is easy to see the “big” things trainers intentionally (or accidentally) do that impact animal behavior. In todays’ livestream we are also going to put a microscope on the teeny tiny things. We will also dissect what it means to be self-aware. We will also explore ways to improve our ability to get desired responses by implementing some strategies that facilitate self-awareness. Lots of new videos to inspire the discussion. I hope you will join me! Join me live most every Monday at 11:00 AM Central time for another YOU be the Behavior Consultant. Today’s topic: Last time we had technical difficulties so did not get to cover this awesome topic. Today we try again. Creative Ideas to Overcome Common Shifting Challenges. Learn some things you can do when you can’t get the animal to move voluntarily. This week’s live stream will focus on some practical application challenges and how we use behavior science to overcome these challenges. We will specifically focus on the problem of getting an animal to move voluntarily towards another space when it isn’t easy to get the action started for various reasons (such as habitat design challenges.) I have numerous video examples for us to evaluate this week. This will be a fun one to discuss! I hope you can join me live as I am sure there is much to be learned from each other’s experiences. YOU Be the Behavior Consultant - Hidden Gem Training induced binge eating behavior. How it happens and potential welfare implications. Since I am unable to give you a livestream today, I really wanted to share with you this hidden gem from last year. I just re-listened to this material, and it reminded me how important it is to carefully describe behaviors and examine the conditions that lead to future responses. The specific behavior discussed in this YOU be the Behavior Consultant has had many trainers confused for a long time. So much so, it has been labeled “psychologic” and a “paradox.” However, upon closer inspection it is very logical, and observable reinforced behavior. It is also a behavior that according to the study discussed in the replay is a welfare concern. If you haven’t watched this episode, I highly recommend it. If you have, it is definitely worth revisiting. https://www.facebook.com/GoodBirdInc/videos/10158075025422781 #livestream #animaltraining #behaviorproblem #barbaraheidenreich #behaviorconsultant #zooanimaltraining #exoticanimaltraining #zookeeper #professionaldevelopment #psychologicalhunger #foodparadox #weightmanagement #bingeeatingdisorder #bingeeating #birdtraining #birdshows #dogtraining #motivation #establishingoperations #foodmanagement #dietmanagement #creatingmotiivation #motivationinanimaltraining #animalwelfare https://www.instagram.com/p/CVunr2dlH-o/?utm_medium=tumblr
