Naná Vasconcelos - Africadeus - 1973 album reissued by Altercat

Spiritual, intimate and revolutionary, yet firmly rooted in Brazil's folklore. Africadeus was the breakthrough album of the mighty Naná Vasconcelos, in which he discovered the berimbau to the world and took the instrument to a universal level. Having played in the shadows for other artists such as Milton Nascimento, Gato Barbieri or Som Imaginario, Naná is here finally in the spotlight.

Recorded in 1973 in France for Pierre Barouh's Saravah label, this is the album that definitely imprinted Naná's name in the international scene, on his track to becoming one of the best percussionists of all times.

Daily Instrument — Berimbau

The berimbau is a Brazilian musical bow with African roots and is typically played accompanying the martial art capoeira. The berimbau is wooden and just under 5 feet, with a single metal string strung called arame, and a hollowed out resonator tied on the instrument's lower end called cabaça. A metal disc called a dobrão is pressed against the string, and then the string is struck with a thin stick called a baqueta.

Naná Vasconcelos - Nelson Angelo - Novelli - 1975 album reissued by Altercat

In this real tour de force of Brazilian creativity, Naná is joined by his friends Nelson Angelo and Novelli to create one of the greatest Brazilian albums ever recorded outside of Brazil.

The three musicians grasp here for the kind of musical freedom that could then only be achieved outside of Brazil. A boundary-pushing experimentation that makes your soul flow and is to be enjoyed at large.

Recorded in 1975 and released in Pierre Barouh's label Saravah. Artwork by the great Belgian artist Jean-Michel Folon.
