I'm reading The Making of Biblical Womanhood by Beth Allison Barr (finally), and I'm on Chapter Two and I'm so fucking mad. I'm fully on board with what she's saying. I'm mad at patriarchy. A lot of the arguments are familiar to me (I've been egalitarian for years), but the one that's standing out to me and making me rage at the way the church patriarchy has sanitised and obfuscated things, is learning how dang GENDER TRANSGRESSIVE women in the early church were. "One more piece of evidence that convinces me that the household codes should be read as resistance narratives to Roman patriarchy is how early Christians were perceived by the Roman world: as "gender deviants". . . . Not only did early Christians place women in leadership roles; they meet together on equal footing—men, women, children, and slaves—in the privacy of the home, a traditional female space. Christianity was deviant and immoral because it was perceived as undermining the ideals of Roman masculinity." Early Christianity was QUEER. It was all about breaking down gender norms of Roman society. Like Paul said "There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus." And I'm so mad that we haven't been taught that.

My copy of Midnight Sons isn't in AND ALSO the Agatha variant cover is ratioed - which means stores only get one for every 25 of the other (original?) covers they order SO won't be getting that one (here, at least; it'll take a little more scrounging around).
But the Wanda/Agatha funko Target set is up for pre-orders again so I CAN FINALLY IT.
So not a horrible day in terms of gathering things!

more random cod headcanons
tw: mentions of self harm, references to OG ghost backstory, angst :)
141 tried to do group therapy together
but they ended up making the therapist cry and the four of them had to awkwardly comfort the therapist
ghost hates therapy with a passion but goes anyway
soap did the tide pod challenge
price lost it at him in the med bay when he found out
"johnny it's a plastic capsule of LAUNDRY DETERGENT!"
"yummy colours🥰"
ghost used to sh on his face
love how i just give yall a bunch of sweet stuff and then BOOM ANGST HEADCANON outta nowhere :)
i feel like he suffers from severe facial dysmorphia, especially after covering his face for so long
sweet pie gang: soap, könig, price
savoury pie gang: ghost and gaz
couldnt care less, just likes pie: horangi
ghost hates coffee but pretends to like it to seem cool (he's actually drinking coffee crisp hot chocolate)
horangi listens to ayesha erotica
he is also a RAGING bisexual (strong lean towards men)
laswell refers to the 141 as her boys, she loves to embarrass them like a mom would
soap and ghost are ATTROCIOUS at cooking
price is pretty good at it, can make quite a lot but struggles with a few harder recipes (and also somehow cannot make instant noodles)
gaz is a GOD in the kitchen but he hates cooking
soap is not allowed in the kitchen alone, once set the kitchen in fire trying to get a glass of water
awkward day on base when that happened
"sorry, can't go into the kitchen, the explosions specialist set it on fire trying to get a drink"
soap listens to classic rock and metal only (and katy perry but he will never admit it)
gaz listens to (shocking literally everyone on the team) music from the 40's, 50's and 60's. he listens to some modern music but he just ADORES the vintage music, especially jazz.
gaz and soap also like therapy
like genuinely enjoy it
gaz has to hype himself up before his appointments though
soap hypes the therapist up
price is neutral, he'd prefer to just smoke and drink to deal with his problems but understands that talking about them with a professional is the best option
ghost, as mentioned before, hates therapy with a burning passion but goes anyway
mostly because he knows he will be put on probation if he doesn't
but also because he knows that he needs the help even if he doesn't want to admit it
also after one of his first month of going to all his appointments that month without skipping one at all, price told simon he was proud of him and now he uses that as motiva to go to his appointments
price knows how to use technology in the weirdest ways
can operate a drone but cannot for the life of him figure out QR codes
a pretty decent hacker but do NOT ask him what any text slang aside from "lol" and "lmao" is. he does not know.
doesn't know that emojis have different meanings depending on context
once said "simon's in the hospital😭" i the TF141 group chat, gaz and soap thought that he was laughing at simon
soap got arrested in croatia on a mission once because he committed arson
kate had to bail him out and he got an earful on being a pyromaniac and arsonist
price just told him to restrict his fire setting to the battlefield
valeria has a medusa tattoo, it's under her chest on her sternum (iykyk)
ghost was tempted to get a medusa tattoo but decided against it because he views it more as a symbol of strength for women (really afab/fem aligned in general) who have suffered through that kind of assault and that it would be wrong to take that from them
he got a tattoo inspired by medusa instead
ghost has his on his hip
he was orginally going to get it on his left ribcage but when the artist was placing the stencil he almost had a panic attack and they both decided a different placement would be better
könig has tattoos for his siblings and his mother (mama's booooyyyyy🗣️)
ghost also has tattoos for his mother, tommy, joseph and even one for beth
is there a male version of a barracks bunny?
because that's horangi, that man is fucking EVERYONE or getting fucked, depends on his mood that night
idk i feel like sometimes they all watch like family guy or bob's burgers together sometimes during their downtime
soap's fav bob's burgers character is gene
price's is teddy
gaz's is tina
ghost's is both louise and bob
könig's is linda
horangi's is mort and kuchi kopi

Braids
A cute little ficlet about Beth and Barry after their first few weeks staying with the Wests, info on Beth here
OCs are mine but based on The Flash characters
Beth perched herself at the kitchen island, grabbing a piece of toast from the plate Joe was dishing up and brushing her hair out of her face in irritation. She was dressed perfectly for her first day back in school except for the mess of brown strands that wouldn't stay behind her ears. Joe glanced at the 8-year-old with an amused expression.
"You want something on that, Lizzy?" He asked, hopeful but not expecting a verbal response. She hadn’t spoken a word in weeks, not since Nora’s death and Henry’s arrest.
Beth took a bite before nodding. Joe opened the fridge and pulled out a couple of jars.
"Alright, we got strawberry jam, grape jelly, apple butter, regular butter," he listed off, setting them in front of her with a butter knife and a spoon. "Any of that sound good?"
Beth's eyes scanned over the jars, her brow furrowing slightly as she tried to decide, before pointing to the strawberry jar. Joe handed her the spoon and jar with a smile before returning to the stove to finish cooking. As Beth spread the strawberry jam on her toast, Barry trudged down the stairs, rubbing his eyes, his hair a mess.
"Morning, Bethy." He greeted with a yawn.
Beth looked up, giving him a small smile before going back to her breakfast. Barry leaned on the counter next to her, looking over her shoulder.
"Can I have a bite?" He teased, reaching for the toast and causing Beth to turn and stick her tongue out in response. Barry laughed and ruffled her hair as he perched himself on the stool next to her.
Beth pushed her hair out of her face again with a frustrated sound before taking another bite of her toast.
"I bet Iris has a headband you could borrow." Joe suggested, plating bacon and pancakes on the island alongside the toast.
Beth shook her head, frowning at her toast for a few moments. "...I want braids."
The kitchen fell silent, Barry and Joe exchanging a look over the counter for several awkward moments before Joe spoke again.
"I'm sure Iris could help you when she gets-"
"No!" Beth whined. "I want braids like Mommy does!" Her eyes filled with tears and she pushed her plate away.
Barry quickly moved to wrap his arms around his little sister and Beth buried her face in his shoulder, soaking his shirt with tears. Joe turned off the burner and set the pan aside before rounding the island and rubbing Beth's back in soothing circles as she sobbed. She shied away, pressing closer to Barry and Joe sighed. He definitely couldn't send either of them to school like this, Beth was obviously not ready to go back.
"Alright, alright." Joe soothed. "Why don't you and Barr go sit on the sofa, I'll bring you both some hot chocolate and pancakes." He stood, ushering the two towards the living room with gentle hands, making a mental note to call the school and tell them the kids wouldn't be in today. If they had a problem with it, they could take it up with him.
Beth sniffled but slowly stopped sobbing as she and Barry sat on the sofa and Joe draped a throw blanket around them. He pulled out his phone and called the school, briefly explaining the situation as he got out another pan for the hot chocolate. He sighed in relief when the principal agreed to give them another day and caught Iris's eye when she emerged from upstairs, gesturing for her to come to the kitchen with him so they could talk.
"Beth's having a rough day." Joe said quietly, pulling Iris close and kissing the top of her head. "She and Barr are staying home again. Do you mind going and sitting with them until I take you to school?" Iris pulled away to give him a nod and he squeezed her shoulder with a smile.
"Do you wanna watch something?" Iris asked as she entered the living room and sat next to Beth, sandwiching her between her and Barry.
Beth scooted closer and leaned her head on Iris's shoulder, nodding, and Iris flipped through the channels, landing on a cartoon that had them all giggling within minutes. Joe brought in the hot chocolate and plates of pancakes and joined them until it was time to take Iris to school.
"You good watching Beth until I get back, Barr?" Joe asked as he and Iris put on their jackets and shoes. "I'll only be gone half an hour, tops."
Barry nodded and Joe smiled at the kids before leading Iris out the door. Once they were gone, Barry turned to Beth, his face clouding with worry.
"Bethy..." He said softly. "Are you okay?"
Beth shook her head and Barry wrapped an arm around her, waiting for her to open up.
"Why did they take Daddy? Daddy could braid my hair like Mommy did, I know he could. He can do everything." Beth said, her voice cracking with emotion.
Barry could see the tears welling in her eyes again and he rubbed her back gently, fidgeting uncomfortably. Nobody had explained it to her yet beyond the initial informing them they were staying with Joe. She'd never asked but Barry thought the grown-ups still should've said something by now.
"They think...they think Dad hurt Mom." Barry said slowly, unable to think of an easier way to tell her. Beth pulled away immediately, wide-eyed.
"But he wouldn't!" Beth protested. "Daddy loves Mommy and Mommy loves Daddy and she'd be so sad if she knew he wasn't here! It's not fair, Barry, it's not!" By the time she was done, she was practically screaming, tears running down her face again, and Barry winced at the noise. He thought frantically for something to comfort her, his eyes landing on the cartoon still playing.
"I know...um...look, Bubbles is braiding Blossom's hair. Want me to try to copy? Maybe I can get close to Mom's braids." Barry offered uncertainly.
Beth wiped her eyes. "...You think you can?"
"I'll try." Barry promised with a smile.
With the cartoon as their guide, Barry did his best to braid Beth's hair in two plaits. It wasn't perfect - actually Barry thought it sucked in all honesty - but the almost-failure made Beth giggle. She seemed to like it and it lifted some of the weight of sadness from her shoulders, at least temporarily.
"Okay?" Barry asked hesitantly as he tied off the second braid. Beth gave him a smile and ran her fingers over them.
"You did a bad job." Beth declared with another giggle, snuggling into Barry's side to watch more PowerPuff Girls. "Thanks, Barr."

Little Women Amy x Laurie Ballet Modern AU
The March sisters grew up tripping over dance bags and discarded ballet slippers. Piano music and counts of eight were the soundtrack of their childhoods, ever since Meg first joined the ballet class at their local dance studio, every sister following her soon after. Careful Meg, spirited Jo, delicate Beth, and artful Amy all found their place along that barre, different tempers and styles united by effort and a love of dance.
Ballet brought them closer, brought them friends - most notably Theodore Laurence, Jo's partner and best friend - and even brought them their futures. All of them incredibly talented and dedicated, it was no surprise when the four sisters each found their way in the world of ballet.
Meg surprised everyone when, though gifted enough to pursue a profissional dancing career, she settled into a teaching position at the studio they'd all attended, happy to instead pursue what had captured her heart from the very beginning. None shocked more than Jo, however, who got as far as being offered a contract from a prestigious ballet company, but turned it down and turned away from dancing all together, pivoting into academics and other passions, seeking to make her own mark in the world. Beth remained in the studio, but fell in love with the music instead of the steps, finding an inclination for the piano in the corner of the room, and a talent for it unmatched among her artistic possibilities. It was only the youngest, Amy, who'd dreamed of becoming a prima ballerina since first stepping foot in a ballet class, that followed those dreams all the way to her place at a professional ballet company.
Though they'd all loved it, Amy was the one who'd wanted it, wanted it all, had ambition for it beyond the passion. She didn't only want to dance - she wanted to be great. That ambition carried her through her apprenticeship, through the corps, through being one of many and feeling like she'd never be good enough to stand out, all the way through to one of the coveted soloist positions. At last, a chance to be seen, to be exceptional! A chance she wasn't going to give up that easily, not even when she was cast opposite Theodore Laurence for the company's production of Firebird.
Laurie had been the closest friend of the March sisters, once. And though he'd cared for them all, Jo was definitely his favorite. She was his partner, his best friend, his beloved. And when she'd abandoned dance, she'd left him too. He'd envisioned them working side by side forever, spending their lives together. But that wasn't what Jo saw. It wasn't what she wanted. Though they'd always fit together so well, they couldn't understand each other in this, not really. So, Jo went on, and Laurie did too, signing with the furthest company that would have him, determined to forget all about Jo, and about their childhood.
Amy and Laurie had not seen each other for years. They'd gone on to different companies, in different cities, and only now, by chance, did they find themselves in the same place, Amy just promoted, and Laurie just hired. Though she was still new and eager to prove herself, he'd been a soloist at his previous company for some time, had grown comfortable and complacent in his position. The two had been pleased to see each other again after so long, if not also surprised, and it could've been fair to assume they would've worked perfectly well together, if not for that difference in their careers and dispositions.
Dancing Katerina, Amy was working hard every day to be great, yet also constantly feeling the sting of second best. Laurie's attitude was no help, either. As Ivan, he had a principal role and every advantage and talent one could have, but he seemed intent on wasting it, going through the motions every rehearsal and putting in only the bare minimum in his performance. He had lost his passion for dancing, carrying on mostly out of habit and duty, but he hadn't felt the same ever since Jo left. And Amy, in his arms, couldn't help but feel like a poor substitute.
The pair had been friends for years, before. Even clashing during rehearsals, they did get along well now, managed to become closer than before and have fun together. But this wasn't something they could move past. Amy finally had enough of it. She couldn't bear to see Laurie waste it all like this, throw away everything he had, while she was fighting for every opportunity. He wouldn't work with her, and he wouldn't work for himself. She came very close to quitting the production.
Amy had always been powered by her ambitions, but deterred by the knowledge of how hard it was to succeed in this business. If there was something she couldn't get past, if this was the best she'd ever get, if she'd only reach second tier, only ever good enough, and never great, then what was the point?
Surprisingly, however, Laurie heard her. Amy made him see what he'd been avoiding for years. He knew what he was doing. He knew he was wrong. He just didn't want to face his own pain, didn't want to change, to grow up, to truly leave it behind. But he also knew he had to. If he wanted to keep going, he couldn't be dragged back by the past.
And then there was her. He and Amy had become so close through the course of rehearsals. She had been the one to wake him up, and to see there's a future beyond Jo, to make him start to love dancing again. He desperately didn't want her to quit the show, to quit him. He wanted to be there, to be better for her, wanted to dance with her, wanted to be the partner she deserved.
Laurie committed. He showed up, for Amy, every rehearsal and every show after that. More than that, he worked hard on it, not just for her, but because he'd begun to feel passionate about dancing again. And in his revival, he made Amy feel it too. Though she'd never abandon her dreams, seeing Laurie like this made her remember why she loved dancing in the first place. Not just to be a prima, not just to be great, but to be an artist.
The two of them, dancing together, managed to get past complacency, past ambition, past insecurities. They managed to dance, to create something beautiful, to fall in love with it all over again. They managed to fall in love.
Amy and Laurie made each other better. They inspired each other, captured one another's hearts. They danced together, and together they shined.

What podcasts do you listen to? I know you listen to Allie Beth Stuckey’ Relatable and Spencer Klavan’s Young Heretics and, as someone who also listens to those, I was wondering several things. A) What other podcasts do we both listen to and B) if you were listening to something I wasn’t so I could check it out.
Lovely question! My most regular ones are:
Relatable with Allie Beth Stuckey
Young Heretics with Spencer Klavan
The Michael Knowles Show
Verdict with Ted Cruz
The Jordan B Peterson Podcast
and then the ones I don’t listen to quite as often include:
Things Unseen with Sinclair Ferguson
Revolutions with Mike Duncan (I’m taking an extended break between the French and the Haitian)
Men Who Rocked the World with Steven Lawson
Secrets of Statecraft with Andrew Roberts
The Alisa Childers Podcast
The Federalist Papers with Dick Barr
and yesterday I started Cultish

Current read. A biblical look at patriarchy and the harshness of gender equality among Christians. Enjoying it so far and finding some pretty good insight.
“Patriarchy wasn’t what God wanted; patriarchy was a result of human sin.”
(The Making of Biblical Womanhood: How the Subjugation of Women Became Gospel Truth by Beth Allison Barr.)

top five books that have helped u/influenced u in ur faith (besides the Bible!)
This is such a good question and I feel like I probably have not read enough to do it justice but I will go ahead and list a few (in no particular order!) and ask you guys to recommend me more in the notes! :)
Mere Christianity by CS Lewis (I have read sections but not the whole thing! It's sitting on my desk and I NEED to sit down and read it)
The New Oxford Annotated Bible - this is a Bible so it's kind of cheating but it has SO MANY footnotes and extra material that I really feel that it counts as its own book. It is so big that I recommend a PDF instead of the physical copy, but I have learned so much from it, particularly about the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament
The NIV Archaeological Study Bible - also cheating, but the same situation as the last one. If you're at all interested in history/archaeology, this is a must-have. It has so many maps and notes about the places that feature in the Bible, and I've learned so much from it!
The Making of Biblical Womanhood by Beth Allison Barr - a fantastic look at 'how the subjugation of women became gospel truth' and how that is not at all biblical
The Book of Common Prayer (the actual church one, not Joan Didion lol!) - nothing I say will really do the BCP justice but it is a work of such incredible love and devotion, it's absolutely deepened my faith. Even just flipping through it or finding a morning or evening prayer to say is so profound.
Bonus Round that anon did not ask for but I'll give anyway: Books that I have not yet read but want to (that are somehow related to religion)!
Under the Banner of Heaven by John Krakauer
The Confessions of St Augustine
Eusebius's Historia Ecclesiastica
Who Cooked the Last Supper? A Women's History of the World by Rosalind Miles
The Screwtape Letters by CS Lewis
Descent Into Hell by Charles Williams

Counting to 30: Marcianna 4
The previously empty halls in the campus complex were now full of students going to their respective classes. Marcianna attempted to weave through the throng of women hurrying to their next destination, but found it quite difficult. Among the sea of leotards were also dotted a few students wearing street clothes. They would be going to theory classes where they'd learn dance history, among other things. Those were the only classes at the academy to be co-ed.
Women had an entire side of the campus to themselves with all the amenities, men had a separate side, both sides joined by a taller building in the middle that contained the clinic Marcianna had just come from, a bunch of classrooms, a large auditorium where practical exams and end of year productions took place, and a library.
A familiar bun caught Marcianna's eye as she entered the dance studio wing, Beth had just stepped out of her current class for a quick break. She still had her leather ballet slippers on, normally a faux pas in the hallway, but she wouldn't be very long. "Hey, newbie!", she said as Marcianna waved, "How has your day been so far?"
Marcianna did a quick shrug. "Fine. I still haven't done a class yet. That will change soon, though. I only have one today, then I think I'll just go back to the dorm". Beth nodded, "Who's your prof?". Marcianna responded, "Professor Julie".
Beth gave Marcianna a large smile, "Aww, I love her, she's awesome. I think they give her the intro students so they don't get scared off. She'll put you through your paces, though".
Beth's big, white smile and friendly voice suddenly made Marcianna feel a lot more comfortable. "I can't wait to hang with you back at the dorm", Marcianna grinned. Beth threw back her head and laughed, "After today, I'll be glad to take care of you". She did a quick check of her watch, "I gotta get back in there, and you should get to your class, too. I'll see you later".
The hallway where Marcianna's classroom was smelled of flowers. Just a faint smell, but noticeable. A large glass wall gave her a peek inside where several dancers were milling about, some doing warm up stretches on the floor, some standing with groups talking. A long wall opposite the one she was looking through was also made of glass, a window displaying the outside world, a cliffside overlooking a wooded area. The sky had gone grey and it had started to rain. It caused Marcianna to shiver, but she admired the beauty of it. The entire perimeter of the studio, including the glass walls, was lined with a barre, along which many students chose to stretch.
Marcianna stepped in and found a place to pull off her nylon booties and get comfortable. She sat in front of the large window to the outside and rested her back against it, feeling the coolness of the glass against the area cut from the back of her leotard. She stared at her feet for a moment, pointing and flexing them, making the leather on her slippers wrinkle. "This is real...", she thought to herself. She contemplated her slippers a bit more she a woman in her late 30s walked in. "Good afternoon, ladies! I am professor Julie, you can just call me Julie, welcome to intro to ballet here at Hope International".
Julie's long skirt flowed as she walked to the front of the class, her teaching shoes, black shoes similar to jazz shoes with a large heel, clicking on the shiny wood floor. "Most of you are already on the floor, let's start with some floor work!", she said, clapping her hands together. Marcianna listened to Julie's instruction and followed along to Julie's counts.
A hour later, Marcianna was drenched in sweat, her body was aching like it never had before, she was done for the day. She trudged back to her dorm, pulling her keycard from her bootie and swiping it against the lock. A beep, a click, the door opened. Beth sat on the couch, a plate of raw veggies in her hand as she watched TV. "I told you she wouldn't be easy on you", Beth said, placing her plate on the counter. "Go get undressed, I'll get you some ice".
Marcianna sat down on her bed, taking her modesty skirt off and tossing it to the floor, followed by her leotard. She swung her legs up and laid down on the bed, suddenly very comfortable, she felt like sinking in. "Are you decent?", Beth's voice came in through the door. "You're fine. We'll probably see each other naked at some point", replied Marcianna, a groan of pain in her voice.
The ice packs were cold as Beth carefully laid each one over strategic parts of Marcianna's body, but with the cold came relief. Beth started to massage Marcianna's calf muscles. "Trust me, this gets you feeling better faster". Marcianna closed her eyes and let Beth do her work. "How did you learn to do this?" she asked. "Lots of years of doing it myself. I started in sports medicine, fell into ballet, I figured if that falls through I can go back to sports medicine again".
"It's only our first day and I already like you, Beth", Marcianna forced a smile. Beth stopped a moment. "I think I like you, too..." she said, red filling her cheeks. She continued massaging. "There's supposed to be a welcome party tomorrow night. I'll be going to help out, but we can hang out after. I know a good place."
Marcianna took a deep breath in and smiled. "Yeah, that sounds nice..."
