Jan and Nace were guests at Hitradio Center in the morning on Tuesday, the 23rd of July 2024. They talked to Vesna Ponorac and Melani Mekicar about, among other things, 'Šta bih ja' and what to expect from the new album, who snores on the tour bus, and what they like best about each other.

Melani: Good morning from (Radio) Center, it's 7:36 AM and Vesna Ponorac and Melani Mekicar are keeping you company, and now, we've been announcing and waiting for them for two days,and we listen to them every day anyway, and we're always happy to see them. With us in Center's studio are Joker Out, or, well, two fifths of them. Nace and Jan, welcome!

Vesna: Good morning.

Jan: Greetings.

Melani: Good morning. I know that... well, thank you for taking the time, I know you've been "on the go" recently, literally. Where were you over the weekend? Most recently, or...

Nace: Go ahead, Jan.

Jan: Oh, thank you. Most recently, we were in Germany, at the Deichbrand Festival.

Melani: Was it good?

Jan: It was good. The only bad thing was that it took us 12 hours on the plane...

Melani: Oh, great.

Vesna: A ride.

Jan: In each direction.

Vesna: Yes, this European tour of yours is pretty varied. How many cities have you already done and how many are still ahead of you?

Melani: Is anyone keeping count?

Nace: Oh, you keep count. I know that we've done most European countries.

Melani: Okay.

Nace: Or, we will, what we haven't done yet, we will.

Melani: You will.

Vesna: Such sweet problems.

Melani: Yes, nice.

Vesna: How many cities you've already done, the best. Are you tired at all? What does it look like? Jan, you are now...

Nace: Do we look tired?

Vesna: Ah, Nace. Right, you're approaching the threshold of a new decade.

Melani: You've actually crossed it already, the first one.

Vesna: Ah, you already did. Oh, okay, I didn't know yet, okay, sorry.

Nace: No, I did.

Vesna: Well, but after sleeping in the tour busand on planes, does your back hurt already? Your lower back? Any issues yet?

Nace: Sleeping on the tour bus is betterthan sleeping at home.

Melani & Vesna: Really?

Vesna: Do you have a waterbed in there?

Nace: No, I don't know what happens, but when... Like, when you're tired after a gig and lie down in your bunk and the bus starts to move...

Melani: And you're there... A baby in a stroller.

Nace: As if someone were rocking you. Noise cancelling earphones, we've already learned that. And then you just fall asleep. We've also got used to it on planes, to... Earphones and that thing for the eyes...

Melani: I was just going to ask who snores the most on the tour bus.

Nace: No one.

Melani: No one? Or do you just not hear it because you have earphones?

Nace: I mean, no one from the band. Well, that too.

Melani: No one from the band.

Nace: No one from the band, but... Usually it's so that the band is on one side of the bus, and the crew is like... It just happens to be that way.

Melani: Fair, fair. Well, enough about tiredness, no rest for the brave, or however you say, you're here to tell us a little more about your new single 'Šta bih ja'.

Vesna: An awesome song.

Melani: Do tell us,you're leaning towards the microphone.

Nace: We have to speak close to the microphone.

Vesna: That's true.

Melani: Well, Bojan, the songwriter, is not here right now, for us to ask him who he can't do without in a black night, but okay. Tell us when this song was made, because people have been singing it for a while at gigs, right, but you only released it just over ten days ago.

Jan: Yes, um... That was actually the first song that we started working on in London, where we went in January. We went to London, among other things, with the intention to have maybe a more... cosmopolitan sound and... to perhaps get new experiences, and the first song that was made turned out to be the most nostalgically Balkan.

Melani: That's right.

Jan: So yeah, you have to go somewhere to start being aware of...

Melani: Your roots.

Jan: Exactly.

Melani: Nice, nice.

Vesna: The song is very ex-Yugo, just like you were in Sarajevo, maybe... looking for inspiration. But can we then expect more like that on the new album, any similar songs, or...?

Melani: Which languages are waiting for us and so on?

Nace: I mean, the album definitely has a common thread, and there will be at least three languages.

Melani: At least three, okay.

Nace: I mean, there will be three.

Melani: Okay, nice. And speaking of the new album, come on, we want to know all the details. When will we hear it, where will we hear it live, we already said three languages, spill the tea, everything you can.

Jan: You know what, I'd like to know that too.

Melani: Really? Who does know?

Jan: Honestly, no one really does right now, but in October, it'll be out in October. I can say that.

Melani & Vesna: Okay.

Melani: Okay, nice.

Jan: Or, in September.

Nace: I will say it very close to the microphone. Just practise a lot, a lot, a lot, practise a lot, and practise a lot. What else do they need, to be persistent.

Vesna: What about the mindset?

Jan: And have a good mindset.

Nace: Yes.

Vesna: What does that mean, a good mindset?

Nace: Well, to have a good mindset while practising.

Vesna: To already imagine yourself at Sziget.

Melani: To not give up.

Vesna: Or?

Vesna: But like, bands that are just forming and don't know what to do. What's your advice for them?

Jan: Have a charismatic and likeable frontman.

Melani: Well, first up: what is the most Slovenian or Balkan thing that you like? Accordion, ajvar¹, I don't know.

¹Ajvar is a typical Balkan condiment made from roasted bell peppers.

Vesna: Prekmurska gibanica.²

²Prekmurska gibanica is a traditional Slovenian dessert from the Prekmurje region in the north-east of Slovenia. It's made from several layers of phyllo dough and cottage cheese filling, poppy seed filling, walnut filling and apple filling.

Jan: Clean air.

Melani: Clean a– oh, nice. Fair enough. Nace?

Nace: What do we have... No, I want to think of something that is... There must be something that, when we're out there...

Vesna: Idrija lace.

Nace: Idrija lace. I mean, we always have that with us, so I don't miss that.

Melani: Fair, fair. But like, that's a very Slovenian thing that you love a lot.

Nace: Yes, definitely.

Vesna: Exactly. That's it. Okay. Moving on, a big concert in Slovenia, when?

Melani: Again.

Jan: How big?

Vesna: Stožice big.

Melani: As big as possible.

Jan: Not this year.

Vesna: No?

Melani: Okay, but how about, let's say, something a little smaller than Stožice?

Jan: That's coming this year.

Melani: Your favourite thing about Nace, it can be his personality, it can be that he has a really awesome hairdo, whatever, and vice versa.

Jan: Nace is a very considerate person. Like, if he feels that... that you're not feeling okay, even if you're feeling totally okay, he'll ask you and be like...

Melani: Okay, let's move on from this cute stuff to problems for a bit. Someone wants to know what the biggest problem you face as famous musicians is?

Vesna: And young ones.

Melani: Yes. So, I don't know, is it that girls are running after you, I don't know, is it that you can't just publish everything on the internet anymore? What's the biggest, like...

Vesna: A long deliberation, but take your time.

Melani: Well, is everything nice?

Jan: At one point, I had a bit of an... internet overdose. So... ever since I've distanced myself from scrolling Twitter every hour, I've...

Melani & Vesna: You've been much better.

Jan: I've spared myself a lot, yeah.

Vesna: I'd say so.

Melani: Okay. Nace?

Nace: Shoot... I always... maybe it's not like that here, but when we're somewhere abroad, and fans gather around our bus that we travel with, sometimes, when you're tired and because you're in a hurry to move on, it's kind of hard to go past these fans without giving them any attention.

well I just got back into this tumblr account... thing is, I DID get into drugs. ALL OF THE DRUGS. Name a drug I haven't done.. that would be the hard part. I wanted to do drugs so bad according to my lame ass pist 10 years ago but it still feels like it was o ly yesterday. That's how fast time goes when you are actually on drugs. Not no bullshit norco ecstasy binge.. Haha I'm fully addicted to fentanyl and meth and I have an 8 year old daughter whom I barely see and she has no idea who her psycho father is. I haven't been in her life like at all. My husband on is her mom. I'm her sister. When she gets older and realizes what a piece of shit I've been, that's going to burn my insides with regret. I've lost everything that's good in my life. I'm literally at a point where I am so fucking miserable it's hard to explain. I hate my life. I look around so disoriented because everything is on a thin sheet of glass and it can all break through and I have nothing. I have no friends because my most recent relationship has become everything to me. He is everything to me. Even though he cheats on me with everyone who is willing.. including hookers. I still love him though. Hes locked up right now and I have to go back to jail soon I just want to wait until he gets out at least so that I can get a taste of him sober. But I'm going to get sober before he gets out, or hes just going to want to do drugs if I'm doing drugs. I should have a place for us to stay as well. And a car. Or hell just go back to being with my best friend. Oh yeah I didnt mention that yet? When I did a 14 month term in jail I got out and he was living with my best fucking friend. Some friend huh. Some soul mate as well. .y life sucks. I want to end it but then I dont because I know theres nothing after life. I've overdosed multiple times. Theres nothing. "Crap!" You yelled, skidding to a stop as you finally made it to a nearby sewer. Opening the hatch and climbing down, you continued running. Making it into the lair, panting heavily, you managed to make it on time to the training session you had almost forgotten.

As you enter the training room, you noticed everyone already there. They greet you with a smile, quickly becoming concerned at your current state.

"Woah, (Name)! Are you okay?" Mikey asked as he bounced over to you. "You're sweating like crazy!"

You nodded with a sheepish smile, feeling embarrassed as you finally caught your breath, "I forgot about the training session... I've been having trouble remembering things a lot lately."

"It's okay, we understand what you're going through. We all have our own struggles." Donnie said as he typed away at his bracelet, looking up when he was satisfied with whatever he searched for. Raphael nodded in aggreement, "Yeah, and we're here to help you out. We're a team, the Mad Dogs! We've always got each other's backs."

Their words put a smile on your face as you felt your anxiety fade away as they reassured you. You take a deep breath and got ready for the training session.

As the training began, you find that you're having trouble keeping up. You keep forgetting the moves and getting confused. You started to feel frustrated and upset at yourself for messing up multiple times.

The turtles take notice of this and start giving you their attention and encouragement, making sure you understood each move and technique. Leo used his humor and jokes to help you stay focused and engaged as everyone would groan here and there at his lame jokes, but it only made you pumped.

"You're doing great!" April cheered as she witnessed you do a difficult move by yourself as she trained alongside you. Leo nodded and grinned, "Yeah, you're really getting the hang of this! We're really proud of you."

You rubbed the back of your neck as you blushed at the compliments being thrown, a wide grin on your lips as you realized by the end of the session, you really couldn't have done it without them. They helped you stay focused and motivated the whole time. And most importantly, they did not give up on you.

"Thanks, guys," You say while packing up your things and slinging the backpack straps over your shoulders as you turned to look at them with a wide smile, "You really helped me out today."

"Anytime!" Mikey beamed, "That's what friends are for!"

"Heck yeah! Now, who wants to order some pizza cuz' I'm starving!"

Is St Mary's the place they put Marjorie in The Beetle?

I re-read part of the Beetle for this so now you have to. All that Marsh tells us is:

I believe that, even after her physical powers were completely restored—in itself a tedious task—she was for something like three years under medical supervision as a lunatic.

Given how fabulously wealthy everyone in the Beetle is, this sounds like it could mean some kind of private asylum (such as the one Jack Seward runs in Dracula) or even in house care. I don't know the period well enough to say to what extent that would have been a thing, but she does textually already have at least one doctor in her employ.

If you've read the fic The Best Man, centered around Percy Woodville and the Atherton-Grayling wedding (and you should, it's a lot betterthan reading the Beetle, which is admittedly quitea low bar), Sydney therein suggests that Marjorie has been incarcerated at Bedlam, but you know what Sydney is like.

Whether Marjorie Lindon stayed there or not, St Mary's of Bethlehem is better known as Bedlam, the most infamous mental hospital of all time. There are popular Madness Songs such as Bess of Bedlam dating back into the Renaissance. It's featured in Sweeny Todd as the place where both Joanna and the doomed Lucy end up. However it was also part of the major mental health reforms of the late Victorian period (which seem to have penetrated Seward's asylum at Purfleet only to a partial extent). So it's a byword for a Very Bad Place, but that would have been at least in the process of changing by the time we are looking at now.

I admit I'm not at all sure what to do with poor Jonno in Option 4 now that he's got to London. Would you guys prefer I leave him in Bedlam and hope it helps? Or have him escape and have more Harrowing Gothic Adventures around London? Well I guess we can ask the old fashioned way:

Having a job that involves frequently interacting with kids has done me so much good in terms of mental health. Which is annoying, bc I don't like kids, but it is what it is, I guess.

I used to feel a lot of disdain, anger, and disappointment towards younger me. I always thought she was a pathetic failure. That maybe if she had been smarter, faster, stronger, better...she could have stopped the abuse, she could have saved our family from poverty, she could have cured our dad's alcoholism, she could have made our parents so happy that they finally loved us.

But working with kids... I've gotten to know a bit what they're like at different ages. I've never spent a lot of time with kids, so previously my only insight into the psyche of a child was my own--and that has been significantly warped by hindsight and adulthood.

So like, it turns out kids can't do much on their own. They don't know how things work because they've never seen a lot of stuff before. They depend entirely on their parents for survival, and that's normal and healthy. They need help with things because they're learning how to do stuff for the first time, and this is also normal and healthy. Kids can't manage their own emotions yet because theyre still figuring out what emotions are, so they need help, and that's normal and healthy.

All of this was new information to me. And learning it has kind of blown my perspective wide open. I am finally able to see that my parent's expectations for me as a kid were FUCKING RIDICULOUS.

My parents expected me to manage their emotions--i wouldn't trust a kid with my emotional regulation, they're newbs! My parents expected me to save my aunt when she overdosed on morphine--what kind of moron puts a child in charge of that, kids don't know anything???

When I see kids at work, sometimes I think about what my parents demanded from me at that age, and I realized how fucking detached from reality they were. Like, a ten year old kid doesn't know shit, might still think Santa is real, and doesn't understand sales tax. But when I was that age, I was fending off the guy trying to get me to suck his dick behind the dumpster alone because my parents told me to "deal with it."

So yeah, thanks to being forced into proximity with children, I now know my parents were delusional and cruel. Their behavior was unhinged. How out of control did they feel that they thought a literal child would do betterthan them running the show?

And past me? She was a fucking badass. She did so much with so little and she got us out of that dumpster fire of a household alive. She deserves a medal for how good she did protecting us.

And she deserves to finally take a break from protecting.

OH you asked some Good Ones. - What is your OC's pain tolerance like?

eh. i mean. as a vampire obviously all senses are dulled so. but i guess since he is good at putting up a Front he has somewhat betterthan average tolerance but not enough for an extra dot mechanically (he has average stamina at 2). he went through a lot of Gorey stuff early on (like the worst case of road rash everrr) so has some tolerance to it.

As for as emotional pain... damn good. resolve 4, composure 3. he is good at Putting Off Thinkingof Pain. thankfucking god too, he needs that shit.

Does your OC have a tendency to get jealous? If so, how does this manifest?

Hmhmhm. You know i think he was a pretty good romantic partner cause of his belief in true love so unless you did something to make him Suspicious he wouldn't get jealous. but once he IS suspicious he would start getting jealous frequently cause paranoid, but would be easy to convince cause gullible. fuckin idiot. love him.

i feel it manifested differently pre embrace (not sure how) butpost embrace it would now manifest in him literally scrying on you. he gets no privacy so its harder for him to respect others privacy. toxic for sure - still better than using dominate or something iguess? like its not INhuman its just fucked up.

Process: HMMM ok this is gonna sound weird cause he's a romantic but. hear me out. Unexpected desire.

Unless its very obvious that the other person is interested, and thus be forced to think about it, he will NOT realize he has a crush. and not just with romance. He is constantly worried about so many things that he doesn't worry about want he wants, really. it was hard for him to answer when he was asked what he wanted and he STILL talked around it. like when he was a human he had decided that Tenure Was Something He Should Get so he put all of his effort into that even though, i think had he taken a step back and asked what he wanted, he would have actually preferred to take some time to pursue other things he cared about! but he put everything into that because he wasn't worried about what he wanted. AND OOOPS THAT MADE HIM A REAL PROLIFIC WRITER WHICH CAUGHT THE ATTENTION OF JULIUS OOOPSSSS fuck i just realized htis. ouch.

Express: is vulnerability an emotion? those walls are up so high that even he has problems getting past them or knowing they are there. he will almost always downplay and/or avoid issues.

Done with “Sonic” now and gotta say now that was a real fun movie! I’m really liking what they’ve done with it, and intrigued to see what they are going to do in the future (I’ve already heard the second movie was betterthan the first one, and the first one was already fun, so I have high hopes for the next movie now!)

I really liked that there obviously has gone a lot of thought and love into this one, such as: 

The way they really depict Sonic as a kid, a boisterous and energetic and curious but ultimately lonely kid, so it makes a whole lot of sense when he sometimes gets too enthusiastic or passionate about things, or how he can’t always see the danger in his actions.

The way Tom and Maddie are so obviously good people that they even only have a minor freakout over a big talking blue hedgehog before they settle down and go “hey this is a kid who needs help, so f*ck it, we gonna help!”

Just, generally, loving the Doctor Robotnik Jim Carrey gave us, 11/10 (even if he is a little darker than the one kid-me remembers), and really digging whatever he and Agent Stone have going here. They had me snorting.

Just, generally, really fun and heartfelt movie with great characterization. I’m really looking forward to the second movie!

(Which I’ve already ordered the DVD of, after realizing that buying the DVD actually costs less than watching it in the cinema. RIP cinemas in my country.)
