rip to Quil Grootslang because she would have fit in 100% with the deranged energy of the party. Turns up. Not wearing trousers. Admits to being robbed several times on the road. Asks if you want to hear her music. Sings it. Oh, you'd like to know what the song's about? It's about two dragons fucking. Wyll and Karlach would have thought she was the best.
I really didn't expect to get so attached to Quil in the five minutes before Durge murdered her, but she really is just a sweetheart.
Like, she just wants to write love songs and maybe fall in love herself.
And I maybe feel like Durge will look back on this later and relate to that last part. Quil's clan wouldn't let her fall in love, Durge's shite dad-god makes them try to kill anyone they get too close to. Also the whole "what you want is irrelevant, make babies" bit (I really hate Bhaal for that one).
And for a little Durgetash thrown in, they might even wonder if Enver was their love that they kept all to themself. Because even if they felt it, I don't think they ever said it. And now they don't even remember it.
And now I made myself sad, so have a bonus of Fynn being traumatized by Quil's throat singing.
If bg3 gets new content in future patches, they should really add more dark urge related interactions with companions other than astarion. because it's super not balanced at the moment.
I did a little experiment where I looked at every companion's reaction to Alfira/Quil Grootslang murder. If you have only one companion when that happens, that one companion can say a lot more.
Anyway Astarion has slightly more unique responses. (Gale also has somewhat long dialogue I guess.) The others a bit more often have the same line regardless of which dialogue option we pick. And KARLACH GETS NO SCENE! Nothing! She has no reaction to the murder. This is normally not noticeable because when we have the full group only 2 or 3 of them can speak up, so we don't hear most of them talk anyway. But I did this so I can see every line with every character and Karlach has nothing. Everyone else has a full scene with multiple dialogue options. karlach nothing. Shadowheart refers to Alfira by name even though I tried this with the Quil Grootslang version. You can just really feel that a lot of dark urge content was written last minute.
I knocked Alfira out because I really wanted to see her Durge-failsafe. Only to meet the loveliest woman on the sword-coast.
Likely an unpopular opinion but: Quil Grootslang has more personality and is more interesting in her 5-minutes of failsafe conversation before the Dark Urge brutalises her in their sleep, than Alfira is trough three acts of being alive.
Quil also has a way more interesting reason for showing up and staying with you for one night. Because Alfira only shows up to camp for Durge and says she want's to go on adventures with you, i've never really bought into that story. Something which she also says even when you haven't met her beforehand. So like. how and why did you know how to find us, weren't you busy being scared of a goblin attack on the grove?
I've never felt an inch of sorrow over Durge killing Alfira, because she was always just kind of there for me. But seeing Quil dead made me upset and I only met her moments ago.
In short, I think Sylas will be knocking Alfira out for every single run from now. So that I can actually feel something about this.
Currently trying to figure out exactly how far I can make it into act one in a dark urge play through without succumbing to the urge. So far ive figured out how to postpone the first kill until ive already finished the goblin camp, but if I can maximize my potions of healing and optimize short rests, I think I can actually get through to the shadow cursed lands without killing alfira or quil.here’s where ive gotten so far:
The moment you get access to the grove, you are on a timer. You have to recruit both wyll and karlach before your next long rest. This ensures that the next long rest (where alfira or quil comes to your camp) is overridden by the karlach/wyll confrontation. I also take this day to ensure that every quest or thing that I can do in the grove at the moment is resolved, so I limit the amount of time I spend here after the first kill. This ends the first “day” in game.
Day two: level up as much as possible. This long rest is also safe for alfira/quil, as this rest is taken over by wyll’s pact cutscene. I took this time to get withers, explore the swamp, recruit the owlbear cub (ive had problems with getting the cub to leave the cave, so i have to long rest to check that he’s left.) finish up any other quests that you feel like doing here, the day is yours!
Day three: goblin camp. You gotta do the goblin camp NOW, as you have no remaining cutscene overrides. Either saving halsin and triggering the tiefling party lets alfira/quil live to chill another day, or alfira dies when you massacre the grove, in which case, why have you bothered with the No Murder Challenge? once you’ve gotten through the goblin camp, you can kind of do whatever. I do some other minor quests, build up character approval, that kinda stuff. I also find the underdark entrance for later and get a head start on that crèche quest. At least locate the fast travel locations nearby. :)
Now, in THEORY, if you do the creche on day four and make it all the way to elminster and the mountain pass, his whole thing with telling gale to kill himself could override alfira’s death again. I’m workshopping the Old Guy Override as we speak.
I made it through the goblin camp with this method, but the second i invited elminster back to camp after completing the crèche AND blood of lathander, my game was like “uh… what the fuck is this? no thank you” and crashed. So i guess larian was NOT prepared for someone to just refuse to give alfira/quil the chance to come to camp in the first place (nonviolently of course). I almost wonder if either one will show up at camp if i make it to the shadow cursed lands and long rest because the girlies are Not Supposed To Be In There.
Confession: Given that Quil Grootslang literally had goblins steal her pants before she met The Dark Urge, I won't be surprised if some people wanted to make her payment for staying overnight with us a one night stand.
This is the only mention of Quil Ive seen since Act 1 and Im so sad cause much doesnt even come from it, the response you get is "DUH, but no one here wants to here Dragonborn styled music so anyways bye bye"
i'm pretty uncomfortable with how quil's/the dragonborns' throat singing is considered a joke in bg3. i've not seen anyone comment on it (most likely because quil is a backup for alfira in THAT event in durge's storyline... so people may well have missed it?) but it seems really shortsighted and offensive on larian's part. you can ask quil to sing for you, but there is no available option to respond to it positively (the first option being sarcastic).
combined with bg3's appropriation of indigenous tattoos, it seems quite troubling.
Before I long rested I went up to Alfira and then knocked her out using non-lethal damage then when I long rested instead of Alfira I got quil grootslang
I'm sure you've all see the 'mock me as you will, but i have a thing for Gale' post. Well I finally managed to replicate the circumstances to get that conversation, and i am delighted to inform that it involves the opportunity to hear a Dragonborn bard throat sing about fuckin' dragon style, resulting in these dialogue options:
