Okay, so I already did a lil appreciation post with how lovely this swan palisman is.. BUT 👆 I learned something about why it holds a bell.. (probably)
Apparently at the Bishop Palace in Wells, Somerset, mute swans are trained to ring bells by pulling a rope with their beak; particularly so for when they get hungry and want bread.
However, with this palisman, they're directly holding a bell in their mouth. This comes off as ironic as if it's hungry, how can it eat while having a bell attached to it's beak? Did the witch who carved this palisman not think thoroughly about their design, which now the bird starves because of them? Possibly, as it could explain why the Bat Queen took in this palisman particularly.
Other than this relation I found, I did some research about symbolism of swans and bells that I found interesting. For swans, they're symbolic for love, grace, trust, loyalty, and beauty. This bird is also associated with fidelity, chastity, monogamy, and loyalty in marriage as swans are usually known for mating with one partner for many years and even for life. To include, the swan can represent inner beauty, self love, and a symbol for love in motherhood as they fiercely care and protect their young. With the swan symbolism, I can see this palisman being owned either by Philip Wittebane (due to his very strict religious views) or Caleb's partner we saw in the paintings (love, loyalty, and wanting to protect the people she loves).
As for the bell symbolism, it symbolizes the beginning and the end; life and death, mortality and immortality, good and evil. Bells are also associated with warnings, a command, and or a call for order. However, depending on context, bells can have various meanings based usage such as weddings, funerals, time of day, and so on. Again, based on the black and white viewpoint of the bells symbolism, I can see this swan palisman being owned and eventually escaping Philip Wittebane due to his past and ongoing horrific actions.
Anyway, just wanted to share my overanalysis about the swan palisman 🔔🦢
