Wow! THIS WAS EXCELLENT! I normally stick to YA fantasy, so reading this was a real step outside my comfort zone. I really liked the writing style, the development of the characters, and the first person narrative. I don't usually like first person narrative, so I was very pleasantly surprised. I thought the present I was next to very well with the past. It kept me engaged, and interested to learn what was going on. It really explains the Kai well, while paralleling what was going on in the present day. What I found most interesting was the culture and folklore. Usually, that would bore me, but it was interwoven into the character's lives and identities really well. The only part that disengaged me from the story was the scene with Clark outside the bar. I felt Clark following Paula wasn't too realistic within the boundaries set up. I don't think a man stalking his ex-wife would suddenly change course and go after the lawyer. (who was Oakleigh's lawyer for 2.5 seconds when he began following her) I felt it became a prop to bring Birdwine and Paula back together. Julian, Candace, Oakleigh, and Hana (though mostly at the end) were great characters as well. Learning about Kai was great, I felt very invested in learning more about her and trying to figure out who she was, as well as Paula. While sometimes the jumps between the past and present felt sudden and disjointed, both past and present kept me engaged. Sometimes the past bores me, as I want to get on with the present, but they entertained while characterizing Paula and Kai. I really felt like I knew where Paula was coming from, especially when she tried to explain what Hana's life was like to Julian. READ THIS! The character flaws within this novel are easily relatable, however you were raised. I personally connected to Paula's character a lot and found myself admiring her strength. Sad, mysterious, and enchanting-- you'll have trouble putting this book down! Thanks to William Morrow for providing an Advance Reader's Copy!
