Shop Your Closet: Step 1 Decluttering
Dear lovelies, hi there!
Happy New Year to you and yours.
As we begin a new year with new intentions it may be time to declutter your home. Let's start with our closets.
Have you ever opened your closet full of clothes and said to yourself, “I have nothing to wear!” That is a sign you need to declutter.
As the holiday season ends and the New Year begins there are a few things we still need to let go of for a new year new me.
First things first keep in mind that your space should work for you. That means the way your closet is arranged should make your life easier so you can sleep in longer, choose outfits quicker and get your day started in a better mood.
YOUR SPACE SHOULD WORK FOR YOU
With that clarified, get your playlist ready. This should be fun and therapeutic so add some music to the work of decluttering pieces of your life.
My playlist included this soothing Parisian lofi mix on repeat.
Next is to gather all the needed tools:
garbage bags or clothing baskets to separate clothes for garbage, donation and resale
broom and dust tray
cleaning agent of choice
phone to take pictures of pieces I’d like to sell or donate
After that decide how you would like to section the tasks: do you prefer to start with the smallest or largest pile first? Make your choice then begin.
I like to start with the largest pile first which are my clothes in my closet.
You may have bought new pieces during the holiday and need space to properly store them. You may also have pieces that no longer fit or dislike. The next step is to empty the closet and drawers.
Feel free to section your clothes like this:
button up tops
camisoles
sleeveless tops
t-shirts short and long sleeved
dresses
denim pants, skirts and shorts
work pants
sweatpants
other shorts
other skirts
cover ups (cardigans, sweaters, hoodies, jackets, blazers)
miscellaneous (scarves, ties, belts, hats)
You can put your shoes and bags in another pile to sort through later.
Keep these questions in mind when deliberating on each piece:
Does it smell?
Are there any stains, rips or other damage? Can these be removed or repaired soon and with ease?
Do I feel good when I wear this piece?
How often is it worn?
Can it be worn with at least 5-10 outfits or pieces I already own?
Some pieces are hard to let go of for sentimental reasons.
If it is no longer your style/size donate it. In Jamaica, the Salvation Army accepts pre-loved clothing as donations. Find out where you can do the same in your area and comment it below for others to see.
If you’ve never worn it in 6 or more months (pandemic and seasonal change reasons excluded)- sell it baby girl!
For pieces that I am attached to for sentimental reasons I keep them, but only a maximum of 5 pieces are allowed that grace. Again, my space should work for me and this is decluttering. I will try them on, seek other pieces that match with them and honestly decide how often I would wear these based on my daily routines.
For shoes, I like to store them in shoe boxes. I don’t have a shoe stand or rack yet, so this is the best way for me. The aim is to keep them from excessive dust, moisture and heat. Find what works best for you.
Do they fit well? (Can I walk, stand in them properly?)
Are they damaged? Can they be repaired?
Do they work well with at least 30% of my closet?
If the answers are anything but 3/3 yeses then it has to go.
Makeup- check the expiration date, is this your colour? How often do you wear it?
Skincare- Does this resolve your skin problems? Does it work well with the other skincare products you have? Is it expired?
Jewellery- Does it need cleaning, mending or chucking? How often can/do you wear it?
Accessories- Is the material damaged? Can it be repaired? Do you like it? If you like it does it match with at least 30% of your closet?
(End with after photo of closet here)
Decluttering can be emotionally challenging and healing. It requires acknowledging where and who are right now and accepting that. You may find yourself bemoaning your current size or the woman/man you once were or hoped to be. Keep in mind that your body is good as it is right now. It carried you through many good and bad times. However, clothes were meant to fit your body and not the other way around. Always aim for a healthy body and use clothes to express your vibrant personality.
Next time I'll share tips on how to identify your style and organize your space to match it.
As always be gentle with yourself!
Love, Dvra.
