Gushers Tasting Notes

(page 974-979)

John is, once again, coming along in leaps and bounds with his sylladex activities. His array of queuestacks (great band name) looks like a circus tent in the panel overlay. Perhaps John is recalling the embarrassing memory of Cirque du Soleil filing a restraining order against his dad (p.253).

But mostly this update is Gushers themed, so let’s get some important historical context. Gushers were created and marketed by Betty Crocker in 1991, a subsidiary of General Mills. Betty Crocker is a fictional character crafted by the company to be relatable to 1920s housewives, and she also makes Fruit Roll-Ups and Fruit by the Foot, so John needs to be careful.

Gushers were originally made in strawberry and grape flavors, but tropical and watermelon have since become popular. Since the start they’ve been made in the famous hexagonal bipyramid (‘grist’) shape. They’ve always been marketed to kids, as focus group testing showed that younger people liked the product far more, and are known for their weird commercials. From 2005-2009 they’ve run the ‘Gushers Re-Do Your Room’ flash game, where players can rearrange furniture and paint walls in a digital bedroom, and get extra items through codes on Gushers packs . The gushers-grist connection and this game being a simpler Sburb makes this a very unexpected, but possibly intentional, Homestuck intertext. In 2009 Gushers are also running the ‘Beware the Gush’ promotion. They’ve created thirteen pieces of web content, accessed by codes on Gushers packaging and ranging from a fake German TV commercial to a Google Maps tie-in, intended for kids to “gush their friends” – the multimedia aspects of this are also very Homestuck, and I bet John is gushing his friends.

I found a mini packet of Gushers in my craft box, so have done a taste test right now instead of relying on memory. Now my favorite candy is Welch’s fruit snacks blue variety bag, so to me Gushers are a pale imitation of the king, but even so I will taste these Gushers like they are a fine wine.

Appearance. Mass manufacturing takes its toll on the Gushers shape. The barest hint of the bipyramid is visible, but these candies have been squashed and battered into near-unrecognizable blobs.

Flavor diversity. The Gushers packet still includes nine candies, the same as in 1991, although the size of the actual candies has shrunk. I got all four flavors, but four blues and only one orange.

Smell. Gushers of all flavors carry a gentle aroma of wax, reminiscent of a basic candle, which makes me wonder how one would behave if set on fire.

Texture. The outside of a Gusher is a homogeneous squeaking silicone with just enough resistance to provide enrichment. The inside liquid is surprisingly cool, resulting in a pleasant contrast in temperature as well as consistency.

Taste. A lick of the Gusher’s smooth outside reveals The green Gushers are fairly sour, with notes of sherbet, while the red have the overt, juicy sweetness of a maraschino cherry. The common blue Gusher’s notes of pineapple and mango conjure ideas of ‘island time’, and the rare orange Gusher dares to suggest bright, ripe clementine.

After effects. Having recently consumed Gushers, I can feel a faint film of sugar clinging to my tongue. I have not begun tripping or suffered any adverse health effects as of (13.4 minutes post consumption) but I will update this post if this changes.

Overall opinion. As the ancient truism states, ‘Gushers don’t gush, they ooze.’ I found that the oozing center of the Gusher best revealed itself when eating the Gusher in two halves, otherwise, the liquid was too engulfed in its prison to come to the forefront. With this in mind, I award Gushers a 7.5/10. I would be cool with getting these for my birthday.

For a moment John considers taking an extended candy break, and honestly he’s earned it. Unfortunately it seems like John may never eat a Gusher again, because he’s realized for the first time that his arch nemesis the ‘heinous batterwitch’ is the mastermind behind them.

In [S] John: Mental breakdown (p.979), John, looking very smart in his new suit actually, is surrounded by pulsing Gushers and definitely-real flavors: Cool Fructose Monsoon, Kiwi Mango Colonic Rush, Wicked Watermelon Groin Injury, Mixed Berry Social Anxiety Disorder, Neon Green Ecto-Facial Blast, Jammin Sour Diabetic Coma, Wild Cherry Apeshit Apocalypse and Ranch Dressing Rampage. (His new box is Massive Tropical Brain Hemorrhage). He looks concerned, then afeared, then terrified and near-screaming, and eventually comes to the conclusion that ‘this is stupid’, accompanied by record scratch.

I do not think this is stupid. I do think it’s notable that John’s had similar breakdowns before when WV has been commanding him, and John doesn’t respond to anything besides the voice shouting in his head. Watching this I wonder if this is a problem John has dealt with more generally – I think there’s a solid argument that John has depression and/or autism, and freezing in the face of a difficult situation could be linked to either of these.

In terms of this specific trauma, John has had food pushed on him to the point of pain or sickness, I find it very believable that he’d physically struggle to eat anything made by the brand he associates that with, even if he knows it’s irrational. Betty Crocker also represents the ideal of the American housewife, someone who devotes her life to cooking and caring for the house and kids. Someone who, due to the expectations on her, might be considered stuck at home. Or something. Dad is filling that role in John’s life so it’s not quite so gendered in their house, and Betty Crocker the cultural idea could be another reminder of a suburban nuclear-family future that John wants to avoid.

On another note, I’ve noticed a few instances of color in the narrative text recently, which has previously always been black. This first showed up on page 919 where Jade takes over the narrative with her speech, finishing with a red ‘<3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!’. It happens again on page 934 with the green word ‘ectobiology’, and it’s here on page 978 with John’s ‘WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY???????????’ in Betty Crocker red. The only earlier examples are page 640 (an embedded image reading ‘SWEET CATCH!’ in green) and page 663 (a link to Sweet Bro & Hella Jeff using red Comic Sans). Based on all this, I wonder if color enters the narrative text when one of the main characters ‘takes over’ and wants to add something. Although these uses don’t correspond to Pesterchum colors, they all seem intended as things the kids are saying or writing, except for ‘ectobiology’, which is so closely associated with John that it’s practically his name.

Graphic novel: "The Infinity Particle" by Wendy Xu

Artificial intelligences have managed to achieve true sentience. Not all of them, and not predictably. But sometimes, their consciousness is undeniable.

Also, sometimes they're really cute.

At first, Clementine was fascinated with the AI Kye because he was made by her mentor, Dr. Lin. And, yes, a bit because he was attractive. But soon, she's attracted to his personality and the mysterious code that makes it. But Kye is a valuable resource for Dr. Lin, and she doesn't want anyone snooping around in his code. And she especially doesn't want someone taking up his processor space with...feelings.

A nice balance between the mystery of Kye's programming and the romance between Kye and Clementine. Just when you're getting a bit tuned out on one, the plot switches focus to the other, giving a nice little thrill to the reader.

As in the cover, the artwork is two-tone, blue and orange. The large majority being that blue, but when an image is done mostly in orange, definitely pay attention! It's a visual and emotional highlight. Also, keep an eye out for all those cute little AIs! Not all of them are dreamboats. Most are just little adorable blobs, and make you want one of your own. Someday? Sigh...

Calvin couldn't tear his eyes off of the screen as he watched that little blob beat. "It is... that's our baby." He told her softly, the doctor watched them and then smiled. "Your baby looks just fine CLementine. I am going to give you some medication for nausea and some prenatal vitams to take." She said as she gave them another moment before offering Clementine a cloth to wipe her stomach off.

Calvin just breathed even to remind her how to breathe as he rubbed her side gently. "It's okay." He assured again. When the doctor instructed to lift her shirt, Calvin picked up Clems hand and kissed the back of it. He looked at the screen as he saw a little pulsing blob in his mind. But then the doctor turned the sound on and he heard a strong heartbeat. "Wow..." He said as he looked at his fiance and gave her a smile.

also, another little detail im happy with that i tend to do on all of my art now - everyone has a different shape on their shoulders or elbows! i choose a shape that means something to the character or that i just think fits them for whatever reason :] tommy has stars (except on the raccoon hoodie, where he has apples [ref to stealing golden apples from techno, the reason he was viewed/drawn as a raccoon]) tubbo has explosions ranboo has alliums michael also has stars, but five point ones unlike tommys which are four pointed stars and those are the only four so far (i forgot to add ones for shroud, i don't shade when the "camera" is further out, so none for bbh, you can't see any for techno [and usually tubbo] because of his cape and the fluff on the neck, etc. etc.) there are a bunch of little things i think about when i draw something that i wish i could say but alas if tommy wouldn't mention it ic, it isn't mentioned - the purple shirt he wears under his classic one in this post was given to him by ranboo, tommy has explosion scars on his arms which you can see in this post (mostly from exile, but also other times where he was closer to explosions), tubbo has naturally blonde hair! he dyes it brown, tommy phil and wilbur lived together pre-dsmp, but tommy is not blood related to either of them, nor is techno he just stopped around sometimes (he's a close friend of phils), i believe i decided that people besides the dsmp members are also on the server like other citizens n stuff but that may be false, dream is dead in this timeline and it's some into the future, many people have healed and have become friends or at least not enemies, i forget if benchtrio actually lives together in snowchester in this or if tommy has a house in snowchester next to beeduos, but it's one of the two, techno can shapeshift between anthro pig and mostly human, the moth tommy has in this post is in reference to clementine, i forget if that specific moth actually IS clementine or not, benchtrio have a dart board in their house with a poorly drawn blob dream on it, drawn by tommy, which you do actually see in this post with "ARTISTS RENDITION" written in red at the bottom, in this post you see that tommy keeps a piece of wilburs trenchcoat in his closet, the other piece of it is kept by niki + a yellow sweater from either wilbur or ghostbur, his old lmanburg uniform, and his schlatt suit but those three are more obvious - there's some other stuff like having specific locations tommys at in mind during certain posts but im gonna stop there also from what ive heard about quackitys recent finale/epilogue stream, this post aged very poorly. Stick 'N Poke - The Walking Dead | Headcanon

A/N: Of course! Been meaning to write this! Sorry for the wait.

SUMMARY: Clementine and Violet (Separated) with an S/O who knows how to give people tattoos with a stick and poke kit.

WARNINGS: Needles, swearing, slight fluff.

CLEMENTINE

There was one night in particular, where Clementine made a quick joke about you giving her a tattoo somewhere on her body. Since you had told her in the past that you owned a stick and poke kit – and it just so happened to be inside your backpack, she assumed that you were someone who wasn’t ignorant when it came to adorning a persons’ skin with permanent ink. Of course, when she first mentioned it, you made sure to let her know that it wasn’t going to feel nice, but she was quick to shrug off your statement and say something along the lines of I’ll be fine. It can’t hurt that bad. And, well… y’know… it definitely didn’t feel good when it came to actually getting the tattoo pricked into her flesh. 

“Ow – fuck! Babe, ease up, will you?” 

“Clem, I have to go this hard so it doesn’t fade,” you replied. You didn’t take a moment to stop and meet your girlfriends’ eyes, but if you did, you would have seen the slight glare she gave you as you continued jabbing the ink-covered needle into her skin. 

Every few moments, you would find yourself stopping so you could wipe away some of the blood that seeped from the little incisions you created, and it certainly did get to a point where you felt a little bad for her. Especially when she started letting out quiet sounds of affliction. Luckily for her, you made the decision to stop a few times and give her breaks in between the pain, which was something she would have kissed you for, if you weren’t busy jamming the tip of a sharp pen into her flesh. The only real issue was actually finishing up the tattoo. When it came to resuming the session, she was very hesitant to agree to being touched by the needle in your hand. She told you it hurt like crazy, and so you attempted to come up with a compromise. 

If she let you continue, then she could give you any tattoo she wanted.

She immediately agreed. 

In the end, the tattoo you gave her was the outline of a grizzly bear's body. She always acted like a momma bear to AJ whenever you saw her being a parental figure to the boy, so when you suggested that as an idea, she immediately agreed to it. The tattoo sounded very sentimental to her, and she decided to have it go on her upper bicep. Of course, she had to take off her hoodie to allow you access to that part of her body, and you accidentally ended up noticing the branding she got from David’s group in turn. She told you to put it on her untouched arm the moment she noticed your stare, and you knew she wanted it there, so she could use the tattoo as a way to deflect people’s attention away from the burn scar she wasn’t proud of. 

You made sure to assure her that she was just as beautiful. 

Branding or not, she was the same wonderful soul. 

You almost made her cry.

Anyways.

The tattoo she gave you in return was an orange, but the end product made you almost die of laughter. You told her that it looked like a blob, and as a comeback, she jokingly called you a blob (rude), before she started cracking up too, when she ended up actually seeing the clearly scuffed tattoo she gave you. It sat on your wrist, which made it very noticeable to anyone who knew you. You told her you loved it, though. And then you made a mental note to make it look more like the fruit a little bit later. 

You couldn’t blame her lack of skill, though. She was a beginner at tattooing someone’s body.

VIOLET

When you and Violet were having a conversation, you had mindlessly been moving around your room, and when you opened up your drawer to store your knife, the blonde had unintentionally spotted your tattoo kit, just lying there, completely untouched. Her eyes couldn’t help but narrow in that moment, and naturally, she asked you about your expertise in inking up someone’s body. The question completely derailed the original talk you and her were having, and you couldn’t help but flinch your features in surprise as you turned around and asked her where that sudden query had come from. 

She just pointed at the drawer and stated that she had seen your tattoo kit. You felt like a kid being judged by their parent for a split second when you noticed her furrowed stare. But that didn’t last long, when she quickly shifted into curiosity and asked if you could give her a tattoo. Of course, you were a little caught off guard by the idea, but it didn’t take much for you to agree to the idea, when you eventually shrugged your shoulders and turned around to grab the small little box of supplies.

Honestly, Violet underestimated her own pain threshold. At first, the idea of you giving her a crescent moon tattoo behind her ear wasn’t something she was entirely fazed by. It was a tiny mockup of a moon phase, which meant it would be a quick session on your part. And although it was, that didn’t mean that affliction was miniscule. You could tell she was in pain, as you sat close to her and held her jaw to keep her from pulling away from you. She was very jittery, and you had to force her to stay still so you wouldn’t mess up. 

“Just a few more pricks, and then you can take a break,” you stated.

Violet let out a disgruntled whine at the umpteenth jab of the needle into her skin, before she side-eyed you with a slight glare. “This better look good, or I’m gonna be pissed.” You huffed a laugh in response to her subtle threat, and then pulled the pen away from your girlfriends’ skin. 

When she turned her head to look your way, you sent her an innocent smile. “Remember, Vi. so they released a trailer for the Clementine comic and I am laughing

Honestly I dunno what’s funnier: the use of this unfitting music to make the comic look more epic than it really is or the fact that skybound disabled the comments on the damn thing.

If you haven’t watched it, I’ll give you the link to DomTheBomb’s upload of the trailer because unlike Skybound, he didn’t disable the comments and you’re free to share your thoughts on it there if you wish. 

If not, don’t worry, I’m gonna go through the whole thing and we’re gonna have a cheeky lil’ laugh about it.... because what else can ya do? 

Alright, what’re we lookin’ at....? Lee and s1 Clementine. He’s telling her to get back, then he grabs her and they’re running away from some funky lookin’ walkers..... like what the hell is happening with these walkers?? look at them?? 

Seriously, they look like messy blobs, not walkers..... why?

these aren’t anything new, we saw these in one of the teaser pages that was previously released. Clementine’s having nightmares about Lee leaving her to the walkers..... which isn’t a thing that actually happened but I’m assuming this is an attempt at showcasing that lovely trauma she’s trying to put behind her, I imagine there’s gonna be some abandonment issues, some survivor’s guilt, the works. 

Honestly, I’m a little worried about Tillie’s approach to covering Clementine’s trauma. This whole thing taking place during the winter time AND in a ski lodge...? Is Tillie gonna bother bringing up what happened last time Clem was in a ski lodge?

You remember- she reunited with Kenny, their group was attacked by Carver and his people, she watched at least one of her friends get executed in order to prove a point, was possibly held at gun point and threatened so that Kenny would surrender, and then they were brought to a new community as prisoners made to do hard labor.

What about the fact that AJ was born in the cold? That after she was shot and stuck with Kenny and Jane, she was made to walk through a snow storm with frozen walkers all around her.... only to then be told that AJ was dead, she watched Kenny and Jane fight to the death, she had to make a difficult choice which lead to said death... and then found AJ alive.

Are we gonna bring up any of that, or is that too hard? Are we only gonna talk about Clementine’s trauma with Lee because that’s “easy” and fan servicey? If so, then what a huge fucking wasted opportunity. 

I mean, this whole comic is a wasted opportunity but I dunno, Tillie claims she played the whole series.... maybe actually use the source material a little? 

A nice close up of her new foot.... which by the way, I was thinking about the whole “Clementine giving her new foot a name” thing and like..... y’all wanna make some bets? 

Either she’s gonna name it something silly, or we’re gonna attempt to make readers go “nawww” by naming it Lee.... possibly AJ....

.....Dude, if she names her foot AJ, I’m gonna scream. Y’all will hear me scream, no matter where you are, you will hear it. 

Then again, I’m leaning more toward Tillie pretending AJ doesn’t exist for this comic sooooo..... who knows?

Speaking of Telltale, has anyone checked on the devs? the writers? hell, the voice actors? Jared Emerson-Johnson? Literally everyone who worked on the games? Are they okay? 

Surely it can’t feel good to have gone through all the bullshit of losing your job so suddenly when you’re in the middle of finishing Clementine’s story, having all of that stress, then getting a second chance to finish the story you started and the opportunity to end Clementine’s story the proper way, the way you envisioned...... only for Skybound to be like “but the milk! The cow still has milk!”

Seriously, are they okay? Has anyone checked? Is Kent okay? Mary Kenney? Lauren Mee??  Adam Esquenazi Douglas??? Everyone else?? Are y’all okay??

Alright, so Clem and Amos are fighting walkers. She has her hat and scarf that she got from the community where she got her new foot, so this is after that................... hnnnggg, can I just say that I kinda hate that I can piece together these events now?

Tillie, I have some questions and all I want are some honest answers...... were you at all inspired by Minerva and Sophie, or is the twin thing a mere coincidence? because I’m fully aware that twins aren’t a new thing. I’m pretty sure that TFS didn’t invent twins, so I’m not gonna sit here and wiggle my little finger at you dramatically......... it’s just an interesting choice since the twins were pretty important in TFS. 

I mean, I assume you’re trying to make this story, and by extension Clementine, you’re own so I’m just a little curious of why there are so many things that could be linked back to TFS..... like the damn twin thing.

Okay... new love.

First of all, I told you. Let the record show that I told you that Clementine would be getting a new girlfriend. Tillie Walden writes wlw stories, that’s literally what she’s known for, you don’t hire her and then expect her to NOT give Clementine a new lady love interest. 

Second, we don’t know this new love interest’s name, therefore I shall refer to her as Glasses.... because she’s wearing glasses. Creativity. 

Now, I know some people were assuming that Amos would be the potential love interest for this, and to that I refer you to my first point...... however, I do wanna note that since this trailer dropped, I’ve had chats with my discord buddies about this whole romance storyline and we talked about how the concept of the goddamn love triangle isn’t completely thrown out of the window. 

Thanks. I hate it. 

To be fair, I don’t think Tillie is gonna write a love triangle because that’s dumb, we all know that she’s going to end up with Glasses because Tillie’s the one writing it. There’s no point to it. Tillie went off about how she wants to write Clementine and show what it’s like to be queer in the zombie apocalypse, she only writes sapphic love stories... 2+2=4. 

Plus, TFS had a love triangle.... kinda. But that worked because you are playing as Clementine, you get to decide if your Clementine has romantic chemistry with Louis or Violet, or neither of them. They’re both interested in her, she shows an interest in both of them, it’s just up to you to push her in the direction you want. 

Comics don’t work like that. 

And you’re not really helping yourself out with in the parallels department if this is a thing. We already got the twins, the theory that Amos is white, amish Louis and speculation that Glasses is just gonna be Violet but with glasses slapped on her face....... stop digging, your grave is gonna hit lava at some point. 

Again, this is only a theory that we came up with, there’s no evidence that I can tell that this is even a possibility............. but if it happens, I’m gonna laugh.

...........aaaaaaaaand it looks like we might be getting an enemies/rivals to lovers with Clementine and Glasses. Wow. Great. Never heard of that trope with wlw stories, it’s not overdone or anything, nope. 

Seriously though, look... I know that trope is popular for a reason, a lot of people eat that shit up and I’m not here to shame you for that. You do you. 

However, I’m not a fan of enemies to lovers soooo I’m not exactly pleased with this idea at all. For me to like that trope in a story, it has to be done exceptionally well and I don’t think this comic is gonna pull it off. 

Remember when I mentioned that there’s already speculation that Glasses is just gonna be Violet 2.0 based on looks and what we’ve seen of her in this trailer.... well, Clementine and Violet had a little bit of a “rivals” [if you can really call it that] to lovers thing if you went down that route.... kinda?  I’m not saying that since violentine kinda did that then no one else is ever allowed to do it again......... but I dunno, man.... it’s not looking great. 

Watch Glasses be named after a flower.... Rose, Peony, Blossom.... if she’s named after a flower, I am going to laugh. 

At that point, it can’t be a coincidence, I’m sorry. 

Also look, with this romance everyone is getting screwed by the comic. It doesn’t matter if you romanced Louis, Violet, or had Clementine remain single- the comic is pointing and calling all of us nerds. 

You romanced Louis? The comic said “nah we don’t like him, have glasses instead”

You romanced Violet? The comic said “yeah but this model has glasses” 

Singletine? “single doesn’t sell, here’s some glasses” 

Y’know, if anything good comes outta this damn thing, it’s that we can all finally agree on something, yeesh.

Aside from Denny in the previous teaser pages we got, everyone looks the same! THEIR GODDAMN FACE ARE THE SAME! Clementine looks kinda different, but I can’t tell if that just because of her hat and scarf! And I can tell where Amos is because he has obvious blond hair, freckles, and wears a distinct hat! GLASSES WEARS GLASSES BUT IF YOU TOOK THE GLASSES AWAY THEN SHE LOOKS LIKE EVERYONE ELSE!

Oh look, Glasses got her glasses back assuming that was her before....unless it wasn’t, though I’ve given up on trying to tell anymore. 

So, it looks like Glasses might be injured with Clementine holding her and crying, very dramatic, so tragic. 

But the real tragedy here is Clementine’s pencil thin eyebrow..... do you see that thing? Remember Clementine’s eyebrows in the game? They were thing, defined, and so lovely that they got a fucking CREDIT at the end of the game.
