broke out my thesis for roommate tonight about how the way penalties are officiated in the nhl betrays a fundamental misinterpretation, on like a league-deep cultural level (that even spills over to much of the outside commentary/analysis), about what, exactly, the essential and original purpose of even having penalties in a sport is (hint: to consistently disincentivize rule-breaking behaviour via negative consequences and therefore enforce a fair standard of play within agreed rules). that's always a fun one. if i think too hard about how bad this league is at executing this utterly basic tenet of any organized competitive sport i eventually develop a three-layer existential-level-migraine.

you don't have to scroll through my blog that far to see that a lot of my posts is just me complaining about the mistreatment of women in fiction both by the people who consume the said media and their writers. now you would THINK i came up with something else to talk about but this is just another thinking piece about the same thing because, well, freedom of speech or whatever etc etc...anyway.

lately, i keep thinking AND seeing how differently male vs female characters are treated when it comes to the tropes and categories they are put in and in some cases it really seems like people are either projecting their own insecurities or basically like they want a blank, simple character they can insert themselves in rather than people with flaws and fears and their own issues.

if a male protagonist does something stupid it's okay because he's growing but if a female character does something stupid she's annoying, people can't stand them and so on. if a male character is shy, he's soft-spoken and if a female character is shy she's weak, if a male character is smart he's cunning and if a female character is smart she's a know-it-all, if a female character wants more she's power hungry and if a male character wants more he's ambitious etc etc.

2 annoying tropes i absolutely hate in fiction is when female characters cut off their hair as a symbol of their character growth ™ or changing from 'tomboyish clothes' to dresses when they fall in love so they could appeal to their love interest.

if a child is a bad person it's blamed on their mothers, even though the children have both their parents present and the dads only parent those children once every three months and they do the bare minimum and suddenly they're the greatest fathers ever.

when it comes to cheating, even if both the male partner and the woman they cheated with are blamed it always ends up worse for the woman.

related to this topic, there's also a certain expectation for the women who are victims and the women who suffer in fiction. those women aren't allowed to be cruel, unlikeable, rude, harsh or cold, too old, too big, too strong, to fight back, make mistakes and their actions have to be morally justifiable for the watchers and if they react to violence with violence, fight the same way others fought against them and defend themselves in whatever way they can, it's easier for people to blame and accuse those women.

also, women are only allowed to do very little evil before the entire fandom turns on them and they start getting treated like a cartoon villian. let women be flawed, let women do terrible and evil things, let women be flawed, let women be bad mothers, let women hurt others and let women fight back.

I am writing with a pressing concern about the recent policy allowing anyone to tag posts as explicit, even if they fall within Tumblr’s own guidelines. This change raises significant questions about what safeguards are in place to protect LGBTQ+ users from targeted attacks.

By enabling this feature without clear protections, Tumblr has effectively opened the door for bad actors to target a historically marginalized community. This is not just an oversight—it feels like a direct threat to our safety and creative expression. Now is exactly the time to support gay blogs. It’s not our place to bounce. It’s our right to be who we are just as anyone else. No one’s forcing anyone to view our blogs. We tolerate other pov’s on our feeds and we also customize them as we please. So. … What’s the deal? The double standard here is inexcusable.

Man I really feel like fandom on the internet is becomingly an increasingly toxic place for people who post content. I'm not strictly talking about the DL fandom (and actually as a smaller fandom I think it's been spared from a lot of the nonsense that plagues larger ones these days) but between AI stealing from fics and fanart, a lack of engagement from readers and this growing (and in my opinion concerning) anti-dark content sentiment, I feel like it's a lot harsher of an environment than when I first started posting here.

IM GLAD SOMEONE UNDERSTANDS ME. i actually have so many thoughts about those 4 songs because of how the fandom interprets it. yes, calypso is cursed to fall in love with heroes who wash up on her island, shes just lonely and what not, but it still doesn't excuse her behavior.

not sorry for loving you is one of the songs I love for its symbolism. calypso is apologizing. she is taking accountability and responsibility for her advances but still playing herself as the victim. she apologizes for coming on too strong, for ambushing ody. but still chalks it up to her feeling of love, not her choices and actions. which is more than what we get from zeus who believes it's his right, the suitors who do it because they can, and circe only does it for protection so her nymphes don't have to be in her position.

i dont think you could get it just by looking at my posts but pb is my favorite character in the show. which makes it all the more infuriating that all discussion about her ideals on one specific side of the matter come off more as pr that helps her than a genuine understanding of her personality. everyone fixates on the end results of her development so much that its gotten hard to find discussion about her while she was going through the ropes that doesnt devolve into general name calling. like i dont think its horrible to disagree with her actions because you dont feel easy watching her do them. whats bad is never making it come to mind outside of discourse and only bringing up superficial traits of her on your own accord. hate to say this where ive already been scrutinized at large but this goes both ways

just, as a stan, dont get up in arms whenever people dont outwardly care for the lengths shes gone to protect herself and her environment. whatever bad thing shes done is not a full mirrored reflection of real life. i dont think people should vouch for her like she exists
