I was thinking about how my position on medical realism in storytelling has changed.

When I started this blog, all the common mistakes/tropes/myths really got inder my skin, because life/medicine/the human body usually doesn't work the way it does in movies or TV.

Or rather, movies and TV like to ignore how things really work in service of telling a better story.

And when people think life works like the movies, it adds real difficulties by way of unrealistic expectations. It makes the real world harder.

Then my pendulum swung toward, "tell a good story with enough detail that it feels real enough for the world you're building." Basically, I loosened up a bit, and recognized that stories are meant to be fantasies.

Then I watched the first few episodes of E.R. for the first time the other day courtesy of Mrs. Scripty, and realized that when a good writer gets the medicine right, you can have both incredible storytelling and pinpoint accuracy. (I spotted one tiny error in the first 4 episodes of ER, which, all else being equal, is an incredible accuracy rate. Even the characters' mistakes are completely appropriate based on specialty and experience).

I think you're still better off deciding how real you want your story to be, and what you want the impact of a given injury/illness to have on your character, and what you want it to reveal about them, and back-building from there.

But damn is it good to watch a show really fucking nail it.

I had a dream that the blog had acquired a nemesis similar to "Badgey" (the evil sentient holographic Starfleet badge from Star Trek: Lower Decks). It was named Scripty, and it was a screenplay that Katya had written that had gone horribly, horribly wrong.

are the "script(profession)" blogs still a thing? i kind of want to start one as a flight instructor, to tackle all the misconceptions about aviation/air travel in fiction, but i do know that they're somewhat exclusive and have an application process before they're cool with you using the name.

unfortunately, it seems like a lot of them have gone dormant/archived.

ScriptX Blogs

It's really difficult to say whether or not ScriptX is still a thing. The original ScriptX blog was @scriptmedic, aka Aunt Scripty, but there have only been a few posts since last summer. There is a post about how to start a ScriptX blog (you can read that post here: https://scriptmedic.tumblr.com/soyouwanna ) and if you don't have any luck contacting Aunt Scripty there, to ask permission to use the ScriptX name, you might try their personal blog which is linked on their main page.

If you decide not to go the ScriptX route but still want to start the blog, let me know when it's up and running and I'll promote it, and hopefully others will also. I think that would be an amazing and helpful resources!

Je moet leven om te kunnen schrijven. Je kunt wel in je ivoren toren romantisch mijmeren over zaken die er niet toe doen, maar daarmee raak je niet. You have to stop and smell the roses. Go touch some grass.

Soms ben ik meer bezig met wat mensen van me vinden, dan met dingen maken die ik goed vind. Ik zit hier nu ook een post te schrijven voor mijn tumblr-blog terwijl ik ook een gedicht had kunnen schrijven, omdat ik denk dat ik moet blijven delen om relevant te blijven.

Maar ik ben ook gewoon niet zoveel aan het leven. Ik ben ruim een maand opgesloten in mijn cocon na het schrijven van een master scriptie, bijna compleet geïsoleerd van de buitenwereld. Wat ik weet van de wereld om me heen, heb ik van social media - en ik ben overwhelmed.

Volgende week ga ik weer aan het werk. Ik verhuis van de ene naar de andere bubbel, namelijk die van Hilversum. Gaat mijn creativiteit er beter van worden? We gaan het zien.

I know your writing blog is archived (this isn't a new question, I promise) but I was scrolling through the burn section looking for advice from old posts and saw that one with outgoing links to an off-tumblr blog of yours lead to a site that doesn't load, so I wasn't able to access what might be written there. It was links to a 3 part series of posts on burns. I was wondering if you might still have those archived somewhere else?

Tumblr search is crap, but there's a workaround. If you ever want to find posts from a blog, go to Google, put in your terms, and then put "site:scriptmedic.tumblr.com" or something similar.

I am indeed no longer offering that kind of consultancy. However the @scriptmedic blog has TONS of stuff in the archives, and I've got a couple books out there as well (search Samantha Keel on Amazon/Kobo/etc.). Maim Your Characters is more about story mechanics, while Blood on the Page is practical guides to specific injuries.

Hey aunt scripty ☺️ I don’t know if you remember me, but we used to talk back in the day when your scriptmedic blog was just starting. I just wanted you to know that I’m getting my EMT certification right now with an eye on paramedic and potentially physicians assistant. Talking to you got me through a rough time, but also gave me the push to try for this job.

I don’t know if I’ll be able to get through some final hurdles, but I thought you’d want to know you’ve inspired at least one member of the next generation of EMS. Hang tight and kick ass.
