Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there--on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.

The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that, in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of this pixel on the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner, how frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds.

Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the Universe, are challenged by this point of pale light. Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity, in all this vastness, there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves.

The Earth is the only world known so far to harbor life. There is nowhere else, at least in the near future, to which our species could migrate. Visit, yes. Settle, not yet. Like it or not, for the moment the Earth is where we make our stand.

It has been said that astronomy is a humbling and character-building experience. There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known.

Poucos sabem que quase todas as fotografias divulgadas ao público pela NASA como sendo imagens totais da Terra vista do espaço, não são propriamente fotos, mas "composite images" (imagens compostas), confeccionadas por artistas ou designers gráficos com a colagem de muitas fotografias obtidas por satélites em órbita baixa de diferentes regiões do planeta e/ou geradas por computadores (CGI). Ou seja, nenhuma das "fotos" é de fato uma foto, na acepção da palavra, como a própria NASA admite.

Finished full render (colored, textured, lineless…ed?) for Mistress Snow on Telegram. Based on line art by Olivia Wolfe entitled "The Archangel". Ironically, what gave me the most trouble here was the many tiny mountains Olivia drew on the planet to show just how far the angel towers over everything (yes, this was harder for me than the rays of light, the many little hairs, or even handwriting in Latin). I think I found a good solution by using height bands and defining that winds blow away from the viewer Concept and design: Mistress Snow Composition: Olivia Wolfe Color and shading: Me Want one like this? It felt as though he were waking out of a hazy dream he couldn't begin to remember. The heaviness of limbs was the first to be noticed, pain radiating from a multitude of scrapes and bruises decorated over his sun tanned flesh. The first few breaths were painful, choking almost as the passing winds brought skittering phantoms of dust devils to pass over him. On instinct his eyes shut closed, the back of a muscled forearm shielding his face until the swirling cyclones went along their unseen paths. Lowering his arm, nothing seemed familiar to him on how he got here in this lonesome area or where he was meant to go.

Obsidian orbs looked skyward, the sun's glare searing his skin the longer he laid on the ground before he stiffly got this feet and looked down at his hands. Dark brows furrowed into questioning summits as his looming gaze figured out the vessel he had but nothing came to remind him what that is in its entirety. His tongue was parched, a lick over his lip had the pink organ sticking more before it pulled back to its maw and a thick swallow threatened to choke him on how dry and crackly his throat felt. Brushing the fingertips of his hand over his Adams Apple, the unknown question of existence simply picked a random direction and put one foot in front of the other. He remained bound to the gravitational pull without recall to the overwhelming tempest of power he held, spending hours walking alone and looking at the various shapes of the land as it lay stretched out before him until he eventually found someone and spoke.

Welcome to planet Earth, the third planet from a star named the Sun. The Earth is shaped like a sphere and composed mostly of rock. Over 70 percent of the Earth's surface is water. The planet has a relatively thin atmosphere composed mostly of nitrogen and oxygen. The featured picture of Earth, dubbed The Blue Marble, was taken from Apollo 17 in 1972 and features Africa and Antarctica.

It is thought to be one of the most widely distributed photographs of any kind. Earth has a single large Moon that is about 1/4 of its diameter and, from the planet's surface, is seen to have almost exactly the same angular size as the Sun. With its abundance of liquid water, Earth supports a large variety of life forms, including potentially intelligent species such as dolphins and humans. Please enjoy your stay on planet Earth.

So I'm tumbling this really pretty blue quartzite and I just put it into cycle 2 today. It looks absolutely amazing so far, I'm super happy with it but I have this inexplicable urge to put them in my mouth whenever I look at the photo from earlier.
