Bobby: do me and Buck spend a lot of time together? Yes.
Bobby: Do we have a special bond? Absolutely.
Bobby: But do I cuddle him more than any other loving parent?
*Remembers the time when Buck caught a minor cold and he took care of him for a whole week, spoon-fed him his soup, carried him to bed, and tucked him in every night*
Bobby: itâs possible.

For @icyfox17 đ
Thereâs a boy standing in the corner of the station when they arrive. Heâs shivering, clutching a soft toy to his chest. Bobby jumps out of the fire engine before theyâve even fully stopped.
âHey, kid,â he says, approaching the boy slowly. Heâs small but not concerningly so. His blood hair is disheveled as it falls into his eyes.
The boy doesnât look up, Bobby would think he didnât hear it is werenât for the slight flinch he made when Bobby started speaking.
âMy nameâs Robert, but my friends call me Bobby,â he says, kneeling down beside the boy. âWhatâs your name?â
No answer.
Different approach then.
âI like your deer,â he says looking at the plushie.
âHeâs a buck,â the boy whispers, holding the toy closer to himself.
âOh yeah?â Bobby prompts.
âYeah, âcause heâs a male deer.â
The boy looks up at him with big eyes and Bobby smiles back. âThatâs right. Youâre very smart, kid. Whereâd you learn that?â
âMâmy sister told me.â
Sister. Thatâs a start.
âShe sounds like a good sister.â
âThe best,â he sniffs.
âWhatâs your sisterâs name?â
âMaddie. M-A-D-D-I-E.â He recites.
Maddie. He can work with that. âWhat do you say we try find Maddie, hm?â
The boyâs shoulders slump and he curls into himself, shaking his head. âThey-they donât want me,â he hiccups, shakes his head again.
Bobbyâs stomach drops. He knows that a kid showing up to the firehouse is not a good sign, still, heâd hoped it was a misunderstanding.
âWhyâs that?â He asks gently.
ââCause âm not ânough. She said stay here. âCause I failed.â
âWho said that?â
âMommy.â
Bobby never could understand how some people can be so cruel to their own children.
The boy shivers again. Both arms dropping to his side. Thatâs when Bobby notices the small note taped to his shirt. âLook after me.â Shit.
âHow about we get you a nice warm cup of hot chocolate? Then one of my friends can look you over and make sure youâre okay. Howâs that sound?â
The kid doesnât speak for a moment but then he nods, holding out his small hand towards Bobby who grasps it in his own. His hand is cold against his and Bobby wants to wrap the kid in a hundred blankets. Heâll get Marshall to find some for them.
âDo I get to know your name now?â He asks again, walking the boy slowly up the stairs towards the kitchen.
âMm, Evan Buck,â he says, raising his deer towards Bobby.
âBuck, hm, like your toy.â
âUh huh.â
âOkay, Buck, letâs get that hot chocolate.â

Bobby greeted Hen and Chimney with a hug, "Any updates?" He asked, knowing from their maudlin expressions that nothing had changed since early this morning.
They both shook their heads no. "Docs are hopeful he'll wake up, but they're worried about damage to his spine." Chimney said lowly, rubbing his jaw tiredly.
Bobby nodded sagely; he figured the damages would be serious. His breath had been knocked out of him when he saw the younger first responder had been impaled by a branch and his face had been cut up by glass. "Has the hospital been able to contact his family?"
Hen licked her lips, looking a bit teary as she and Chimney shared a sad look. "His cousin is on the way from San Francisco." She said tersely.
Bobby frowned at that, "That's it? What about his parents? Siblings?"
Chimney shrugged; his arms crossed defensively. "They stopped wanting anything to do with him, Bobby."
Bobby felt a rush of annoyance at that, he was ready to snap till he realized...
"Oh." He pinched the bridge of his nose, "Has Buck even left his side?"
It was Eddie who answered, coming up from behind Bobby with a carrier tray of hospital coffee. "Nope." Eddie sighed, "Hasn't left his side since they got him out of the OR."
Bobby checked his watch; Buck had been awake for more than 24 hours then. They were already doing a 48 and where in hour 40 when they received the call. Despite Bobby's orders, Buck rushed onto the scene.
Buck's yells had him nearly want to sedate Buck or hug him once they saw how hurt Tommy really was.
"He needs to get some rest." Bobby insisted, "Did he even eat?"
"We tried, he's not handling this well, Bobby." Hen confessed worriedly; her voice shaky as Eddie pulled her into a half hug.
Bobby swallowed audibly.
He knew his soft spot for Buck was obvious. He saw bits and pieces of himself in Buck, he saw a version of what Robert Jr could have been if he had lived.
He had never wanted this for Buck.
For Buck to go through the worse thing Bobby had ever gone through.
To see the man he thought of as a son sob and shout about saving the love of his life as they pulled Tommy away from the wreckage.
Barely breathing and bleeding and impaled.
"I'll talk to him." Bobby decided, feeling both uneasy and strained. He couldn't blame Buck for not wanting to leave Tommy's side.
But the kid had to take care of himself for Tommy's sake.
"I'll go with you Cap." Eddie nodded to Hen and Chim, a silent conversation going on between the three of them that Bobby wasn't privy to and was unsure if he wanted to know.
Bobby didn't know what to expect. He didn't think seeing Tommy hooked up to so many machines, his face littered with stitches and bruises, and his chest and arm wrapped in badges would break his heart like this.
Buck was pulled right up against Tommy's bed, back turned to the door and hunched over. Bobby could see that Buck was holding Tommy's hand in both of his, his eyes wet and face red. Still in his uniform and looking as disheveled as he did when they got to the hospital.
"Buck?"
Buck jumped in his seat, turning but not getting up- he still had one hand still holding Tommy's, he wiped his nose with the other as he sniffed. "Cap." He sounded so horse that Bobby winced. Before Bobby could say a word, Buck beat him to it.
"You're not gonna convince me to leave, so don't bother." He warned gruffly, wiping away some tears before turning back to Tommy.
"Buck, c'mon man, you can't-" Eddie had stated to say but Bobby rested a hand on his shoulder, a silent plea to stop.
Bobby stepped closer, "Buck, you haven't slept or eaten anything in over day, and you were already coming off a 48-hour shift when we got the call."
"So."
Bobby inhaled deeply, not missing how Buck held onto Tommy's hand tighter, his lips pressed right against Tommy's skin.
"So, you need to rest, maybe eat or at the very least shower." Bobby eyed what he hoped wasn't dirt and dried blood that looked to be caked onto Buck's uniform. "Tommy is alive and he's going to need you to be ready to take care of him when he wakes up, so you need to get ready."
Buck sniffed, his voice hollow and broken as he told Bobby, "I can't leave him Cap."
Bobby squeezed Buck's shoulder, "I know, but he would want you to be okay too." Bobby knew that to be true, Tommy would have wanted Buck to have at least shower and eat.
He knew how protective and doting the two were with each other.
"I'll be fine." Buck insisted, tears cascading down his face, "He needs me here."
Bobby pressed his lips tightly together; he saw Eddie look even more worried. They both knew what it felt like, to lose the love of your life. They knew how Buck would shatter if something bad happened and he couldn't be with Tommy.
It happened to them.
Bobby took a shallow breath; he knew it wasnât going to be easy for Buck to leave without feeling guilty. "How about this, you let Eddie take you home so you can shower and nap, and I'll stay here. I won't leave his side till you return."
"Bobby-"
Bobby raised a finger at him, "Two hours. Just allow yourself two hours Buck."
Buck's voice sounded so broken as he asked, "What if he wakes up and I'm not here?"
"The moment Tommy's eyes open I'll tell him I sent you home, my orders." He saw the look of doubt on Buck's face, "Buck, Tommy knows you love him, he'll know that-"
He watched in horror as Buck crumble at that, "I never told him." Buck started to sob, alarming Bobby and Eddie now as they watched the younger man cry into his hands.
"What?"
"I never told him I love him. We never got that chance." Buck cried. "You can't ask me to leave Cap, please don't ask me to."
"Hey," Eddie's voice was soft as he patted Buck's back, "You and Tommy will get that chance Buck. He's gonna wake up and he's gonna need you and all of us, but Bobby's right- you can't keep going like this. He needs you to be okay."
Bobby kneeled down, he could see Buck's knee shaking, "Buck," he said slowly, "You have my word that the moment Tommy wakes up, I will call you. I'm not asking you to leave for the whole day, just two hours so that you can come back here with a clear head. Tommy's cousin is on his way here, he's gonna need your support as much as you're gonna need his. For Tommy's sake, kid, you need to be okay."
Buck looked like he was close to throwing up as he stood up, wobbling and barely getting caught by Bobby and Eddie in time. "O-Okay." Buck's voice was barely audible, Bobby couldn't take looking at him for too long- Buckâs blue eyes were blood shot and his skin was clammy to the touch. "You promise you won't leave him?" He asked Bobby.
Bobby felt his heart crack again as he was reminded about Robert Jr- how he would make Bobby promise he would come home in time for their favorite show.
"I promise kid." Bobby watched with bated breath as Buck finally stood on his own, still shaky as he pulled Bobby in for a tight hug.
Bobby held on tighter.
"Two hours?" Buck asked them both, looking and sounding uncertain- as though it was a trap.
"Two hours." Eddie promised, already leading Buck to the door since he was still unsteady. "I'll even warn you when the two hours is almost up, okay?"
That had Buck look mildly appeased, "Okay." He said roughly, wiping away more tears and snot. He was barely out the door when he turned around and leaned over Tommy, kissing him on his forehead and whispering something to him that neither Bobby or Eddie could hear.
Bobby sighed as he looked down as his former firefighter, taking a seat where Buck had been.
"Hey Tommy." Bobby took Tommy's hand in his, "You scared us out there, we thought we were going to lose you." Bobby had watched how terrified Hen and Chim were when they realized Tommy might have suffered spinal damage from the impact of the crash. How they hurried to stop the bleeding from Tommy's mouth and stomach where the branch had impaled him. "I need you to fight to come back to us, Tommy. You can't leave us yet. You can't leave Buck; I don't think he'll ever be okay if he loses you to tell you the truth. That kid has been looking for his other half for as long as he's been looking for a family. He has us and he needs you, we all do." He brushed away Tommy's curls from his forehead, "You have a family with us too, we need you. Not because youâre Buck's boyfriend, we just need you kid." He sighed, regretting the times in where didn't push for Tommy to open up to him.
He was just as guarded as Bobby was back then when they were both at the 118. But Bobby could see it, there was a level of uncertainness that Tommy had carried on his shoulder when he was with the 118. He figured it was guilt and something else, something that made Tommy seem closed off even when he was trying to relax during team dinners.
"Listen," Bobby pulled out his rosary and miniature Bible, "I know you don't consider yourself Catholic anymore, but praying is what I do for my family." He leaned back in the chair and started to pray.

Not the One
Buck had been particularly down this week. Bobby couldn't help but notice how little excitement Buck had shown about the team playing a role in Brad's show. Knowing how smiley and happy he usually got whenever they encountered camera crews or filming sets, the captain had expected the kid to be jumping around like a golden retriever. But Buck had let out a barely audible, âOh... that's cool,â and when Chimney started joking about the miracle of them being allowed on setâconsidering Bobby and Eddie had insulted the show and its âstarââBuck had barely taken the time to flash the fakest, weakest smile ever before turning away, leaving the conversation.
Bobby had also noticed the absence of baked goods from Buck over the following week. He had been so proud of him for finding an alternative to contacting Tommy, trying to separate himself from that failed relationship in a healthy way. Maybe it was a bit much to actually be considered healthy, but spending overtime baking was definitely one of the less destructive coping mechanisms someone on this team had ever used.
Now, this could have meant that Buck had finally come to terms with the breakupâor even better, that he had finally realized he deserved a much better partner than Tommy had been. But Bobby knew better than to be too hopeful.
The sudden halt in Buckâs baking habit could also mean two terrible things:
He and Tommy had somehow gotten back together.
Buckâs mood had dropped so low that even baking wasnât enough to cope.
Somehow, the hickey blatantly visible on the young manâs neck didnât help Bobby figure out which option had won.
As Bobby prepared lunch, he couldnât help but watch his team, hoping to see in them the same worry he felt for his kid.
Hen was focused on the video game in which she was currently beating Buck. If she was worried about him, it was well hidden behind sarcastic comments and playful shoves on the sofa.
Eddie, however⊠Eddie was watching Buck with a complicated expression on his face. Bobby sighed. What a terrible time to have a revelation, Diaz. (Then again, Bobby knew better than to hope that either of these two idiots would realize what they were to each other anytime soon.)
âIâm afraid weâre back to Buck 1.0, Cap,â Chimney said, coming up behind him at the counter, resigned.
â1.0?â
âTruckstealer Buck, if you prefer. Itâs too bad. I think we were at least on Buck 5.0 by now. Maybe 6.0? Do you think the lightning strike caused an update?â
Bobby gripped the pan handle tighter than he should have at that unnecessary reminder.
âA hickey doesnât mean heâs back to his former bad habitsâŠâ the captain said, uncertain of who he was trying to convince.
âSure, no. But three hook-up dates in three days?â
Bobby didnât answer, but his face must have said enough. Chimney sighed and shook his head.
âI know⊠Itâs bad. He even refused to babysit Jee or come over for dinner! Buck loves seeing Jee!â
Their conversation was interrupted by the end of Hen and Buckâs game. Chimney left to set the table, grumbling about how he should have tried harder to stop Buck before he even started dating that âasshole.â
None of it was mentioned for the rest of the shift. Buck tried to act as usual, Hen managed to do so, Eddie brooded, and Chimney and Bobby exchanged concerned glances from time to time.
Bobby remembered his talks with Buck when heâd started his relationship with Abby, and later, the conversations theyâd had after the Buckleysâ first visit to LA. He remembered how proud Buck had been of his personal growthâof no longer needing to be used to feel like he mattered. Bobby thought of all this and decided he couldnât just watch Buck destroy all his progress. His kid was hurting, and Bobby was going to help him get better.
Which led the captain to be standing in front of Buckâs door.
For a second, he hesitated, realizing suddenly that he might find Buck in a compromising position, considering the frequency of the âhook-up datesâ Chimney had described. Still, he knocked.
Not two minutes passed before the door opened to Buck, fully dressed (thank God) and apparently alone.
âBobby?â Buck frowned, clearly perplexed by his captainâs presence but still stepped aside to let him in. âIâmâIâm sorry, itâs a bit of a mess right now, but, um⊠come in?â
As Bobby walked in, he did notice the âbit of a mess.â He wouldnât go so far as to say the loft was unrecognizableâhe had spent too much time in it after bombings, lightning strikes, and housefires not to recognize the placeâbut it did look like a tornado had made its way inside. Most of Buckâs baking instruments were scattered across the central island, empty flour bags and takeout boxes filling the rare voids.
The living room wasnât much better. Dirty T-shirts and sweatshirts were lazily thrown on the chairs, and by the couch, DVDs and⊠Lego boxes? covered the floor.
Bobby took a determined breath and looked Buck right in the eyes. âI think we need to talk.â
Buckâs confusion turned to dread. âIs everything okay? Is Athenaââ
âAthenaâs fine. Everyoneâs fine,â Bobby reassured. âExcept you, it seems.â
âWhat?â
Grabbing the kidâs arm, he guided him to the table. âStop gaping like a fish and sit, Buckley.â
Dirty sweatshirts were thrown further away, they both sat, accompanied by an awkward silence. Buck wouldn't meet Bobby's eyes, looking like a kicked puppy.
"I'm going to talk, Buck, and I would like for you to listen, to hear what I'm trying to say... Okay? This isn't a reprimand or anything like that, I'm just worried about you, kid."
At that, Buck finally raised his head, and god, those sad blue eyes could really break Bobby's heart over and over again.
"I couldn't help but notice a change in your behavior recently. You're not smiling as much as you used to, you're not baking anymore, you're avoiding your sister apparently, and visibly you've been..." The man gestured awkwardly to the hickey. "going out? Again. And that's a lot of signs indicating that you're not doing very well."
Buck just nodded, lips pinched and eyes watery. Bobby suddenly regretted choosing to have a whole table between them. He should have been holding Buck close, in such a good hug that it would shield the boy from all of his problems.
"I know from experience that when we suffer, we tend to lean on our bad habits, and we say to ourselves that it's because they're comfortable, but in truth, we go back to them because we know that they hurt us."
"Bobby..."
"And I know it might not be my place, but I'm not certain that you going out on dates with different people, and... what follows, is actually doing you any good."
In front of him, Buck had become red, stumbling on his words, embarrassed.
"Iâuhâhm... Bobby, I don'tâI have not been sleeping around, if that's what you're worried about."
Bobby's eyebrow lifted by itself, too skeptical considering the purple mark on the young one's neck.
"Okay, I... I had one date. Yesterday. And it didn't go further than what you can see, actually. He... He wasn't who I really wanted."
Oh, Tommy Kinnard. If punching people in the street was more accepted... How could someone voluntarly decide to break this boy's precious heart?
"Then why couldn't you see your sister and your niece? Two different times?"
"Well... I was busy...," Buck gestured to the whole flat, "sulking... as you can see."
"That's all?" Bobby asked, unconvinced.
"No..." Hesitation passed on Buck's face before he continued. "Can I say something terrible?... They're too happy. I mean, I'm glad that they are! But... I didn't think I could have survived spending time with the perfect happy family... Maddie and Chim are so happy together... They're married, and they have a wonderful daughter who's as shining as them, and... They're the reminder of everything I've just lost, you know?"
Bobby didn't know, actually. Sure, things had been going well enough between Buck and Kinnard, but to think that the kid was already projecting marriage and children with this man? Bobby had been lightyears away from imagining things were that serious between them. He should have known. Buck always went all in in his relationships. Now the captain felt terrible with how lightly they all had approached his breakup, if Buck had been grieving this entire future he had envisionned.
"Sometimes you meet someone thinking that they're the one, and it seems so perfect that the idea that they could leave you one day never crosses your mind... But sometimes they do... and it hurts. It's normal that it hurts." As Bobby talked, the young man just nodded, wiping his nose from time to time. "And you're grieving, because no matter how short it was," Buck frowned. "what you had with them was real. What matters, Buck, is that you can cherish what you had without punishing yourself for not having it anymore."
At this point, Buck was barely holding his tears, and Bobby decided that enough talking had been done. He walked around the table and wrapped his arms around the boy.
"It's too hard."
For a moment, they stayed like this, Buck holding Bobby like he was his lifeline, wetting his captain's T-shirt with his tears. Oh, Bobby wished he could take all his pain away. Until he found a way to do that, he would continue to hold him tight.
"It feels like my one real happiness was right in front of me, but it got snatched away before I could really catch it."
"It might feel like it right now, but I'm sure you will find happiness, Buck. It might just not be with Tommy."
The boy suddenly froze in his arms.

Bobby: thanks for coming with me by the way. Wasn't sure if you would be willing to pick up kitchen appliances for the new house.
Tommy: *shrugs and smiles* Don't mention it, Evan said you needed help with moving and I got a flat bed truck.
Bobby: Why do you have a flat bed truck?
Tommy: I know a guy and it helps to know a lot of folks in construction. Those fees for moving and delivering are no joke.
Appliance guy 1: Hey Nash! Good to see you again!
Bobby: Good to see you too. We all ready to go?
Appliance guy: Should be, but you gotta tell me you have more folks coming to help you out. I thought your boys were coming to help?
Bobby: Yeah, Harry and Buck are on their way, they just needed to pick up a few more people. *pats Tommy's shoulder* Meet Tommy by the way, my son-in-law, more or less.
Tommy: *in awe and staring at Bobby with his mouth open*
Appliance guy: Nice to meet you Tommy, think we can get starter on the fridge first?
Tommy: *shakes out his stupor* Yeah, yes. Let's start with the fridge

Bobby's conversation with Buck doesn't only mean that Bobby approves of Tommy. It's also something Buck was expecting, which implies that it's happened before. And what's Bobby's answer to Buck asking for his opinion? No notes. 10/10. Keep at it, kid, you're doing great. Which, judging by Bobby saying this as if it's different from how the conversation usually goes, also tells us that he has opinions about who Buck dates and that he's not usually this on board with his chosen partners. And I think it's really cute that Buck actually asks him for his opinion even if it looks like he sometimes brings up a list of red flags.
#i just feel like it has the energy of you asking your bff fur their opinion in your crush#and them looking at you like#are you sure you want to know what i think about this?#and you're like#of course! your opinion matters! and you're usually right about this stuff!#(even if you later on just ignore what they said)#911 abc#911#bobby nash#evan buckley#bobby and buck#911 spoilers#bucktommy
